In general, one first constructs a subdivision scheme with certain desired properties on a regular mesh. Then for a given initial mesh of arbitrary topology, one applies such a subdivision rule for regular vertices and handles extraordinary vertices of a mesh by modified special rules (see [1]). Since the number of extraordinary vertices in all subdivision levels remains the same, construction of subdivision schemes on a regular mesh with certain desired properties is important in CAGD. Recently, there is a growing interest in finding subdivision schemes other than the standard dyadic schemes due to extra features offered by √ such new schemes. √ For example, 3 subdivision schemes have been investigated in [13,14], 2 subdivision schemes have been reported in [12,16], and triadic subdivision schemes have been discussed in [15]. It is well known that the triangular and quadrilateral meshes are the most commonly used meshes in CAGD. One purpose of this paper is to classify all possible stationary subdivision schemes for these two types of meshes. This allows us to find all possible bivariate stationary subdivision schemes, and to answer whether or not there are new schemes that are not known in the literature.
