The first six months I was married, I truly wanted to scream and pull my hair out. My husband and I really had some all-out battles about his parents (regarding finances, where we would live, religious issues, etc.). Unfortunately, he was completely oblivious to how I felt or that anything was truly wrong. When I was going through all of this with my husband, I really felt so alone. I thought I was crazy/selfish to feel that way and often blamed myself. At first, I called him a Mama’s Boy and told him I felt like I was a low priority to him. This, of course, did not go over well…so I changed my direction.

I’ve been married for three years now, and Jenna’s book played a big role in gaining my husband’s loyalty. I started out by making a decision that I would not berate(责怪) my husband for his family’s actions. After all, he can’t help what his relatives do, and to blame him for other people’s actions wouldn’t really be fair. Secondly, I made a resolution that I would NEVER let them create an argument or problem between my husband and me…this was really a groundbreaking moment for me. After all, it was in my power to control what items became issues in my marriage. I wouldn’t allow petty stuff his family did to upset our balance…that would just give them more power, control, and influence. This took a lot of time, but once my husband realized that I was taking the high road, he started listening to me more.

I promised "for better or for worse " and I decided not to let my in-laws make it worse. As a new bride, I had no idea what I was in for in terms of family management, and even now I take time to re-read certain sections from Jenna’s book periodically. It is taking time and patience to gain my husband’s loyalty, and it’s an ongoing process — but I think it’s well worth it. 4. What can be learned from the first paragraph?

B. The writer felt really happy the first six months she was married.

C. Money might be no problem for the writer’s family.

Many people tell you that without a college education, your life is going nowhere. This motivates a lot of students to strive for straight As in hope of getting into a good college. In support of this view, many employers are now requiring that prospective employees have college degrees. They say that they get a better return on investment from college-educated people. So if you spend your college years aimlessly wandering the country in a van, then it may be true that you will have little interest to employers. However, if you spend those years doing internships (实习期), working your way up in a company, or managing your own start-up, you may actually end up with an advantage over your college-educated peers.

College itself will not teach you how to be successful. Success comes to people with leadership skills, maturity, passion, and drive. It comes to people who have learned how to negotiate and apply themselves. Therefore, success has very little to do with education. Successful people learn by doing. They aren’t necessarily the most talented people, but they don’t give up. Many companies want to hire smart people who already know things. They are also looking for people with certain personality traits. They want people who are responsible, approachable, and punctual. These people should also communicate well.

In short, you may stand to gain more by becoming a well-rounded person than by focusing on getting straight As and securing a scholarship. Certainly you should study, but you should also join clubs, travel, and volunteer, as you seek your special place in the world. Meeting various types of people will enlarge your world, and help you see it through the eyes of others. If you pursue your own interests, have a diversity of experiences, and never stop learning, you will always be a desirable job candidate.

8. What type of people are employers looking for according to Paragraph 1?

A. The college-educated ones.

B. The successful ones.

C. The persistent ones.

D. The experienced ones.

9. Why are successful people not necessarily the most talented ones?

A. They seldom possess passion.

B. Success needs many factors.

C. None of them have leadership skills.

D. They prefer to learn skills by doing.

10. Which view does the author probably subscribe to?

A. Employers should hire people with college degrees.

B. Success has much to do with education.

C. Colleges teach people how to succeed.

D. Experience is superior to education.

11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. Education vs work

B. Success vs failure

C. Education vs experience

D. Employees vs employers

Medicine is not exclusively a human invention. Many other animals, from insects to birds to nonhuman primates, have been known to self-medicate(自我治疗)with plants and minerals for infections and other conditions. Behavioral ecologist Helen Morrogh-Bernard of the Borneo Nature Foundation has spent decades studying the island’s orangutans(红毛猩猩)and says she has now found evidence that they use plants in a previously unseen medicinal way.

During more than 20,000 hours of formal observation, Morrogh-Bernard and her colleagues watched 10 orangutans occasionally chew a particular plant (which is not part of their normal diet) into something and then rub it into their fur. The apes spent up to 45 minutes at a time massaging it onto their upper arms or legs. The researchers believe this behavior is the first known example of a nonhuman animal using a topical pain-killer.

Local people use the same plant — Dracaena cantleyi, an unremarkable-looking shrub with leaves — to treat aches and pains. Morrogh-Bernard’s co-authors studied its chemistry. They added extracts from the plant to human cells that had been grown in a dish and had been artificially stimulated to produce cytokines(细胞因子), an immune system response that causes inflammation(炎症)and discomfort. The plant extract reduced the production of several types of cytokine. The scientists reported the finding in a study published last November in Scientific Reports.

The results suggest that orangutans use the plant to reduce inflammation and treat pain. Such findings could help identify plants and chemicals that might be useful for human medications.

In creatures such as insects, the ability to self-medicate is almost certainly born; woolly bear caterpillars infected with parasitic flies seek out and eat plant substances that are toxic to the flies. But more complex animals may learn such tricks after an initial discovery by one member of their group. For example, an orangutan may have rubbed the plant on its skin to try to treat parasites(寄生虫)and realized that it also had a pleasant pain-killing effect. That behavior may then have been passed on to other orangutans. Because this type of self-medication is seen only in south-central Borneo, Morrogh-Bernard says, it was probably learned locally.

12. Why do orangutans chew Dracaena cantleyi?

A. They feed on it.

B. To get rid of thirst.

C. To check whether it is tasty.

D. To treat aches and pains.

13. What can be learned about cytokines?

A. They can be used as a kind of pain-killer.

B. They are to blame for inflammation and discomfort.

C. They are extracts from Dracaena cantleyi.

D. The more cytokines, the better for your health.
