必修一Unit4 Reading and Thinking

【Teaching Objectives:】

1. Enable students to understand the causes and consequences of the Tangshan

earthquake.

2. Develop students' reading comprehension skills, such as skimming, scanning,

and inferencing.

3. Cultivate empathy and awareness about the impact of natural disasters on

communities.

4. Encourage critical thinking and discussions about resilience and rebuilding after

a disaster.

【Teaching Key and Difficult Points】

Key Point: Understanding the timeline and events of the Tangshan earthquake.

Identifying the actions taken to rebuild Tangshan and support its

inhabitants.

Difficult Point: Discussing the emotional and social impact of natural disasters on

communities.

【Teaching Procedure:】

Step1. Warm-up

Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever experienced or heard

about any natural disasters in their region or other parts of the world. Encourage

them to share their experiences or what they know about these events.

Step2. Pre-Reading

Anticipation Guide Prepare an anticipation guide with statements related to

earthquakes, disasters, and resilience. Have students respond to the statements

before reading the article. Sample statements:

"Earthquakes only affect the region where they occur." "Rebuilding after a disaster is an impossible task."

"People's unity is essential in overcoming a disaster."

After the article is read, revisit the statements to discuss whether their

opinions have changed.

Step3. While-Reading

Activity 1: Visualizing the Scene

Display a picture of the Tangshan earthquake aftermath, and ask students to

describe what they see. Prompt them to visualize the impact and destruction caused

by the earthquake.

Activity 2: Comprehension Questions

Divide the class into groups and provide each group with a set of comprehension

questions related to the article. Example questions:

What time did the earthquake occur?

How many people were estimated to be dead or injured?

How did the government and volunteers help Tangshan recover? Encourage students

to refer back to the article for answers and discuss their responses within their

groups.

Activity 3: Cause and Effect

Step4. Post-Reading

Homework

在听力当中，学生应该有效规划学习方法，选择恰当的策略与方法。这节课的训练目标 是让学生有正确的预测和抓住问题的关键信息，从而用心去听来找寻关键信息。根据生活中 实际情况和高考常见语境,我们不难发现提前预测和抓住题干中的W很重要,即What, Where, Whell, Why 等等。

教学重难点：

(2) 熟悉和数字、地点等相关的常见表达。

(1) 听力中涉及到数字一直是学生听力的难点，要让他们对于20以内的数字比较熟悉，才 能听到之后立马反应过来；

一、教学内容简析：

本课的内容是人教版高中英语必修1 Unit 4 Earthquakes 中的Reading 阅读理解部分，包括Warming up, Pre-reading, 阅读理解课文A Night the Earth Didn’t Sleep和Comprehending 内容在内。Warming

up部分提供了唐山地震和美国旧金山地震的两幅图片，要求学生描述地震对这两个城市造成的危害并展开讨论。Pre-reading部分提供了地震前兆的图片，让学生了解地震前动物和自然界奇特的异常变化。阅读课文A Night the Earth Didn’t Sleep是一篇新闻报道类记叙文，叙述了唐山大地震前夕的“怪现象”、地震造成的损失及震后的救援情况。Comprehending 部分设置了些练习，主要是帮助学生更好地理解课文内容，培养学生整体把握文章的能力。

二、学习者分析

oneself and help others in disaster）”。具体涉及地震的成因、预兆、地震造成的损失、地震时的应急救生以及震后的救援等内容，对于高一学生来说要完成这些内容的学习也并非是一件易事。目前，学生上 2 课以interpersonal的交流为主，而interpretative和presentational形式比重不够均衡。由于文化教学不够重视，学生的跨文化意识不高。此外，学生跨学科学习的意识不够，语言和信息的双向促进关系的认识不足。对于比较策略主要运用在英汉汉英互译的语言层面，未进入文化比较和思维比较。学生的课外语言活动环境不够丰富和重视程度不高，通常以词汇、语法等练习为主，缺乏真实的语言运用。
