In 1891, Ford became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company. After his promotion to Chief Engineer in 1893, he had enough time and money to devote attention to his personal experiments on gasoline engines. These experiments culminated in 1896 with the completion of a self-propelled vehicle which he named the Ford Quadricycle.

These actions yielded Ford a $2.7 billion profit in fiscal year 2009, the company's first fullyear profit in four years. In 2012, Ford's corporate bonds were upgraded from junk to investment grade again, citing sustainable, lasting improvements.

福特制及其它有83年历史的福特Rouge制车中心，乃亨利·福特(Hernry Ford)理想中一处自给自足的车城，这个见证了美国工业兴起的福特发源地，在面临关闭之时，福特决心将它翻新重修，使它再次成为全球汽车工业景仰的标准。

亨利·福特年幼时经常在祖家不远处的矮树林玩耍，那片矮树林位于美国密芝根州Dearborn市以南数公里的Rouge河旁边。

他对那片地方情有独钟，成年后，便逐片地买下来发展他的汽车事业。

这里就是后来被称为“The Rouge”的汽车生产厂房，但它并非一般汽车生产线那么简单，而是亨利·福特理想中的一个能自给自足，一切原料以至汽车制成品都可在同一处地方实现的车城。

现在，Rouge仍然是全球面积最大，并由单独一间车厂拥有的制车中心，占地约1．6平方公里，楼宇可用面积达158万平方尺，多年来都是国家元首、工业家和学生必到的参观胜地。

由1914年至今不断生产福特汽车的Rouge，在新世纪讲求高效率环保政策，以及大部分福特汽车的生产线已迁移到其他厂房进行之时，正面临是否应该继续存在的问题。

决心靠自己于1903年创立的福特汽车，创立人亨利·福特一直希望汽车可以由工人阶级拥有，但传统的制车方法只会令车价高昂。

虽然当时的制车方法已有高效率的所谓流动生产线，但福特觉得这个概念可以加以改善，使汽车生产的成本大大减低，他说过：“如果供应商产品的价格，不能让我们生产成本低廉的汽车的话，那么我们只好靠自己生产配件。

”福特认为，惟有自给自足，不假外求的“垂直综合”(Vertical Integration)方法，才可改变汽车的生产模式，Rouge的概念，就是将整部汽车的每一个部件，由铁矿、橡胶、玻璃以至发动机等所有的汽车组件，均在一个屋檐下提炼、加工、制造和装嵌。

Rouge厂设立之前，福特汽车原本是在Highland Park(高地公园)厂房出产的，该厂多次因为供应商缺货而停工，这更加强了亨利·福特要自给自足的决心。

此后

中国福特
福特汽车在中国的历史可追溯到1913年，当时第一批T型车销售到中国。 1979年中，福特向中国出售了750辆F系列卡车。这是自1949年以来美国汽 车第一次销售到中国来。
