Teaching Procedures

Step 1 Greeting

Step 2 Warmer

Play commands. Call children to the front of the class to call out the commands they

now know. The rest of the class responds. Include point to the …! Stand up! Sit

down! Turn around! Touch the ground! Touch your ears!

Step 3 Activity 1 Listen point and find ‘go straight on, turn left, turn right’.

1.Ask the children to look at the page. Elicit as much information about the story

as you can in Chinese by asking questions. For example, point to the telephone

and ask What’s this? Point to each picture and ask them what the people are doing.

T: What is he/she doing?

Ss: He’s/She’s ……

2.Play the cassette or read the dialogue. The children listen and follow in their

books.

Ss: On Sundays, I usually draw. Now I am helping my father.

3.Play the cassette again, pausing after each utterance for the children to point

at the corresponding picture. Perform a simple gesture to indicate the meaning.

For example, drinking gestures for “are you drinking?”, dancing movements for

“is he dancing?”.

T: What is Daming doing now?

Ss: He’s helping his father, he’s washing the car.

T: What is Lingling doing, now?

Ss: She’s helping her mother, she’s cooking.

T: What is Amy doing now?

Ss: She’s cleaning the windows.

Ss: He’s in bed, he’s ill.

4.Play the cassette again. This time pause for the class to repeat each utterance.

Encourage the class to perform actions as they repeat.

5.Repeat this activity, asking individual students to repeat the utterances.

Alternatively, divide the class into groups.

Step 4Activity 2 Listen and say.

Point out to the students that instructions such as ‘go straight on, turn left,

turn right’use the imperative and therefore the subject of the sentence is omitted..

Step 5 Activity 3 Practice.

1.Choose a student to be blindfolded or the student can just close his/her eyes..

2.Now give instructions to the student such as ‘go straight on, turn left, turn

right’to lead him/her to some point in the classroom.
