The man is too old to remember so many things.

=The man is so old that he can't remember so many things.

=The man is not young enough to remember so many things.

1. advise & advice

advise作动词，意为“劝告；建议”。主要用法如下： ★advise sb. about / on sth.意为“就某事向某人提出建议”。如：

We can advise parents about / on education.

★advise sb. to do sth.意为“建议某人做某事”，advise sb. not to do sth.意为“建议某人不要做某事”。如：

Police advised people to stay at home.

My friend advised me not to buy that house.

★advise doing sth. 意为“建议做某事”。如：

I advised waiting until tomorrow.

advice是advise的名词形式，意为“劝告；建议”，是不可数名词。常见的搭配有give sb. advice (给某人建议)， take one's advice (接受某人的建议)，follow one's

advice (遵循某人的建议)等。如果表示“一条建议”应该用a piece / word of advice。如：

Thanks for giving me a piece / word of advice.

【拓展】suggestion也可意为“提议；建议”，与advice同义，但suggestion为可数名词。

if引导的条件状语从句

含有if引导的条件状语从句的复合句表示假如有从句动作的发生，就会有主句动作的发生。

★ 通常情况下，如果主句用一般将来时，if引导的条件状语从句用一般现在时。如：

We'll have a party in the garden if the weather is good.

★ 如果主句是祈使句或者主句的谓语部分含有情态动词，if引导的条件状语从句也常用一般现在时。如：

If anyone calls, tell them I'm very busy.

If it rains, you can stay at home and relax.

本单元我们还学了连词unless，可意为“除非；如果不”，通常可以和if ... not互换使用。如：

He won't go to sleep unless you tell him a story.

=He won't go to sleep if you don't tell him a story.
