For example, someone who likes to spend a lot of time sitti ng or lying down while watching television is sometimes called a couch potato. A couch is a piece of furniture that people sit on while watching television.Robert Armstrong, an artist from California, developed the term “couch potato” in 1976. Several years later, he listed the term a s a trademark with the United States government. Mr Armstron g also helped write a funny book about life as a fulltime televisio n watcher. It is called the Official Couch Potato Handbook. Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potato es enjoy working on computers. A computer mouse is the devic e that moves the pointer, or cursor on a computer screen. The description of mouse potato became popular in 1993. American writer Alice Kahn is said to have invented the term to describe young people who spend a lot of time using computers.Too much time inside the house using a computer or watching t elevision can cause someone to get cabin fever. A cabin is a si mple house usually built far away from the city. People go to a c abin to relax and enjoy quiet time.Cabin fever is not really a disease. However, people can experi ence boredom and restlessness if they spend too much time ins ide their homes. This is especially true during the winter when it is too cold or snowy to do things outside. Often children get ca bin fever if they cannot go outside to play. So do their parents. This happens when there is so much snow that schools and ev en offices and stores are closed. Some people enjoy spending a lot of time in their homes to mak e them nice places to live. This is called nesting or cocooning. Birds build nests out of sticks to hold their eggs and baby birds. Some insects build cocoons around themselves for protection w hile they grow and change. Nests and cocoons provide security for wildlife. So people like the idea of nests and cocoons, too. The terms cocooning and nesting became popular more than t wenty years ago. They describe people buying their first homes and filling them with many things. These people then had childr en.Now these children are grownup and have left the nest. They ar e in college. Or they are married and starting families of their o wn far away. Now these parents are living alone without children in their empty nests. They have become empty nesters. 16.Which of the following was first used?A.Couch potato. B.Cocooning.C.Mouse potato. D.Nesting.17.________refers to a person who spends much time on com puter.A.A couch potato B.A nesterC.A mouse potato D.An empty nester18.Why can most people easily get cabin fever in winter? A.Because they are addicted to computer games. B.Because they would like to play outside.C.Because it is so cold that they couldn't go outside. D.Because they are too busy at work or school.19.What's the passage mainly about?A.How to get rid of cabin fever.B.How people become nesters or empty nesters.C.How to spend your leisure time.D.The origin of some words.BGerman researchers said older people tend to be portrayed neg atively in society. Although they are often described as wise, th ey are also shown as being slow and forgetful.“Living in a youth centered culture, they may appreciate a boost in selfesteem. That's why they prefer the negative stories aboutyounger people, who are seen as having a higher status in our society,” said Dr Silvia KnoblochWesterwick,of Ohio State University.KnoblochWesterwick and her coauthor Matthias Hastall, of Zep pelin University in Friedrichshafen, Germany, studied 276 Germ an adults, including 178 aged 18 to 30 and 98 between 55 and 60. Their findings are published in the journal Communication. All the adults in the study were shown what they were led to bel ieve was a test version of a new online news magazine. They w ere also given limited time to look over either a negative or a po sitive version of 10 preselected articles. Each story was also paired with a photograph depicting(描绘) someone of either the younger or the older age group. The researchers found that older people were more likely to ch oose to read negative articles about those younger than themse lves. They also tended to show less interest in articles about old er people, whether negative or positive. But younger people preferred to read positive articles about oth er young people.According to KnoblochWesterwick, older people's preference fo r negative news about their younger counterparts can be explai ned by their place in society.“Everybody likes a selfesteem boost. For young people, though, it's almost automatic. Youth is considered important in society ,” she said. After reading the articles, the participants completed a question naire designed to measure levels of selfesteem. Unlike their yo unger counterparts, the selfesteem of older people rose after th ey read a negative article about younger people.Although the study was done in Germany, KnoblochWesterwick believes nationality and the national characteristics are not imp ortant.20.What do older people think of themselves, according to the text?A.They are behind the times.B.They are always forgetful.C.Their selfesteem is challenged in a youth centered culture. D.They should have a higher status than the young in society. 21.What can be learned from the study?A.The old enjoy reading negative stories about the young. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文)showing how it was used. This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff's most valued contributors. But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a booklined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for the Criminally Insane.Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds. In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.31. Not only is the military standing tall again, but it is staging a remarkable comeback in the quantity and quality of the recruits(新兵). Recruits, once denounced by antiwar students as “baby killers” and barred from (从……扫除)campuses, are welcomed ever at famous universities. ROTC (美国后备军官训练队) programs that once faltered are flourishing again. The military academies are enjoying a steady increase in applications.Certainly, the depressed economy has increased the allure(诱惑) of the jobs, technical training and generous student loans offered by the military. Students know that if they go in and become, say, nuclear weapons specialists, they can_come_out_and demand a salary of $60,000 a year. Military salaries, while not always competitive with those paid for comparable jobs in the private sector, are more than respectable, especially considering the wide array of benefits that are available: free medical service, room and board, and PX (Post Exchange) privileges. Monthly pay for a recruit is $574; for a sergeant with four years' service it is $906; for a major with ten years' service it is $2,305. The welfare has helped win over the TV generation. Kids are walking down the school hallways chanting “Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines”. There is a return to the view that the military is an honorable profession. The days of a judge telling a miscreant to join the Army or go to jail are over. Recruitingfor all four services combined is running at 101%of authorized goals. And the retention rate is now so high that the services are refusing some reenlistment applications and reducing annual recruiting target. The military academics are also enjoying halcyon years, attracting more and betterqualified students. Compared to private colleges, where tuition and expenses have been climbing sharply, the service schools are a real bargain: not only is tuition free, but recruits get allowances of up to $500 a month. It is reported 12,300 applicants are for the 1,450 positions in this year's freshman class. Military academies are now just as selective as any of the best universities in the country. Nationwide, ROTC enrollment exceeds 105,000,a 64% increase over the 1974 figure. In the mid 70's, the ROTC students refused to wear their uniforms on campus because they suffered all sorts of ridicule, if they did. Now if they wear them to class no one looks at them twice.35.What is the main idea of this passage?A.The military is in.B.The military is up.C.The military is down.D.The military is on.36.What was the attitude of the students in 1970s towards the military?A.Approval.
