Dear Diary,
Can you believe we're already a few months into 9th grade?
Time is flying! I've been trying my best to stay on top of things,
especially with English. You know how important that class is
going to be for our high school entrance exams next year.
I have to admit, the vocabulary load this semester has been
pretty intense. Our Yilin textbook is packed with new words from
front to back. The dictation lists seem never-ending! I've been
diligently copying them down into my notebook though. There's
no way I'm going to fall behind.
Let me walk you through the latest one we just had. Unit 3
was all about sports and fitness. Words like "athlete",
"competition", "triumph" and "referee" were a piece of cake. I
love sports so those were a breeze. The ones that really tripped
me up were "stamina", "resilience" and "perseverance". Who
comes up with these impossible vocabulary words? Then in Unit 4 on environmental protection, I thought
"pollution" and "deforestation" would be straightforward. But
"desertification"? "Biodiversity"? Those are some tongue-twisters
for sure. I spent extra time practicing the pronunciation. Luckily
my reading buddy Miguel was a huge help. Having a study
partner makes a world of difference.
Don't even get me started on the random words thrown in
from who-knows-where. "Decade", "commence", "initiate"...I'm
pretty sure those weren't even in the textbook readings. It's like
the teachers pick the most obscure entries from the dictionary
just to stump us. The struggle is real!
At least the word root practices have been useful. Breaking
down "bio" or "geo" into their Greek and Latin prefixes helps
with decoding meaning. Memorizing definitions straight-up is
rough. Giving me some context and etymology makes it stick
better.
I have to hand it to the textbook editors though. They've
really raised the bar on academic vocabulary this year. And our
dictation tests are no joke - they separate the casual learners
from the future English scholars. Misspell one letter and it's
wrong. No mercy! That's why I've been rewriting these lists over and over,
practically engraving them into my brain. Flashcards, word
association games, you name it. I'm trying every trick in the book
to commit them to memory. English may not be my best subject,
but I'm determined to ace vocab.
There's just something so satisfying about perfect scores on
those dictation quizzes. Seeing all those tidy rows of words, not a
single error. It's like a mini achievement, a pat on the back for all
the hard work. You know that feeling when you finally "get" a
difficult concept? That's how I feel conquering these vocab
monsters.
My parents are proud too. They were born in the 80s when
China was just opening up, so having a strong English education
means the world to them. It's a skill that will open so many doors.
Whenever I buck up and power through a challenging list, I'm
honoring their sacrifices to give me opportunities they never
had.
Sure, my hand cramps up sometimes from all the writing.
And yeah, I may zone out during the actual definitions part of
class. But I know this vocabulary is laying the critical foundation
for my English abilities long-term. If I can slay these word lists
now, I'll be unstoppable later on. Who knows, maybe I'll be the next spelling bee champ? Or a
famous author crafting bestsellers with an insane vocabulary?
For now, I'm just doing my best to survive death-by-dictation,
one weekly list at a time. Phew, I'd better get back to studying -
there's a quiz on Units 5 and 6 tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Signing off,
Your Faithful Diarist
