His hands touched the soft material for a moment, then he shut the drawer and turned to me, "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion."I'm still thinking about his words, and they've changed my attitude to life. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to enjoy, not suffer. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and treasure them."Someday" and "one of these days" are being lost from my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I' m not sure what my sister would have done if she had known she wouldn't have tomorrow .I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have calleda few former friends to apologize and mend her fences for past things. Alternatively, you must lick your finger and make a cross on the toe of your shoe, and not look again at the shoe until the mark has dried.②UmbrellaAnother common superstition is that it is unlucky to open an umbrella in the house - it will either bring misfortune to the person that opened it or to the household. The superstition could date from the old time when its purpose was to act as a sunshade. If opened indoors, it might be considered to be an attack on the sun. Anyone opening an umbrella indoors in fine weather is unpopular, as it inevitably brings rain!③Number 13The number 13 is said to be unlucky for some, and when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday, anyone wishing to avoid an inauspicious event had better stay indoors.④Seven years bad luckThe worst misfortune that can befall you is caused by breaking a mirror, as it brings seven years of bad luck! In fact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school. It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the case in America. In the nineteenth century, a usual American activity was to sit around the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that there was no television at the time, nor movie theaters, nor World Wide Web, to provide diversion. However, poems were a source of pleasure, of self-education, of connection to other people or to the world beyond one’s own community. Reading them was a social act as well as an individual one, and perhaps even more social than individual. Writing poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the fireside, another way in which poetry has a place in everyday life. How did things change? Why are most Americans no longer comfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that a poem has nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems? There are, I believe, three culprits(肇事者):poets, teachers, and we ourselves. Of these, the least important is the third: the world surrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed the poem. Early in the twentieth century, poetry in English headed into directions unfavorable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not for the fireside or the easy chair at night, that they belonged where other difficult-to-read things belonged.Poets failed the reader, so did teachers. They want their students to know something about the skills of a poem, they want their students to see that poems mean something. Y et what usually occurs when teachers push these concerns on their high school students is that young people decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles.9. Reading poems is thought to be a social act in the nineteenth century because ______________.A. it built a link among peopleB. it helped unite a communityC. it was a source of self-educationD. it was a source of pleasure10. The underlined word ―diversion‖(in Paragraph 2) most probably means ―_________‖.A. concentrationB. changeC. amusementsD. stories11. According to the passage, what is the main cause of the great gap between readers and poetry?A. Students are becoming less interested in poetry.B. Students are poorly educated in high school.C. TV and the Internet are more attractive than poetry.D. Poems have become difficult to understand.12. In the last paragraph, the writer questions ____________.A. the difficulty in studying poemsB. the way poems are taught in schoolC. students’ wrong ideas about poetryD. the techniques used in writing poemsDHow can a creature weighing over 5 tons and normally taking 150 kilograms of food and 120 liters of water per day survive in a desert environment? In the southwest African country of Namibia, and the Sahara lands of Mali further north, the desert elephant does just that.Although not regarded as a separate species from the African elephant, the desert cousin differs in many ways. Their bodies are smaller, to absorb less heat, and their feet are larger for easier walking across sandy surfaces, They are taller, to reach higher branches. They have shorter tusks(象牙), and most importantly, longer trunks to dig for water in riverbeds.Desert elephants can travel over 70 kilometers in search for feeding grounds and waterholes, and have a larger group of families. They drink only every 3 –4 days, and can store water in a ―bag‖ at the back of their throat, which is only used when badly needed. Desert elephants are careful feeders – they seldom root up trees and break fewer branches, and thus maintain what little food sources are available. Y oung elephants may even eat the dung(粪便)of the female leader of a group when facing food shortage.During drought they are unlikely to give birth to their young but with good rains the birthrate will increase greatly. Desert elephants have sand baths, sometimes adding their own urine(尿液)to make them muddy! As we continue to overheat our weak planet, it can only be hoped that other animal species will adapt as extraordinarily well to change as the desert elephant.13.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 means ―‖.A.remains in the African countriesB.drinks 120 liters of water a dayC.manages to live in desert areasD.eats 150 kilograms of food daily14.Desert elephants are called careful feeders because they _________.A.rarely ruin treesB.drink only every 3-4 daysC.search for food in large groupsD.protect food sources for their young15.What can be inferred from the last sentence in the passage?A.Overheating the earth can be stopped.B.Not all animal species are so adaptable.C.The planet will become hotter and hotter.D.Not all animals are as smart as desert elephants.第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
APhil White has just returned from an 18,000-mile, around-the-world bicycle trip. White had two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did.He raised £70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White's second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not.White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than l,300 hours in the saddle(车座)and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road. The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had.The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For l,000 kilometres he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures.21. When Phil White returned from his trip, he __________.A. broke the world recordB. collected money for OxfamC. destroyed several bikesD. travelled about l,300 hours22. What does the underlined word "epic" in Paragraph l most probably mean? ________A. Very slow but exciting.B. Very long and difficult.C. Very smooth but tiring.D. Very lonely and depressing.23. During his journey around the world, Phil White __________.A. fought heroically against robbers in IranB. experienced the extremes of heat and coldC. managed to ride against the wind in AustraliaD. had a team of people who travelled with him24. Which of the following words can best describe Phil White? _______A. Imaginative.B. Patriotic.C. Modest.D. Determined.BThe evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on well with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it had ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one number of the resear ch team. “They’re expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation and discussion between parent s and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with me.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Look ing back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, “Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over. ”25. What is the popular image of the teenagers today? _________.A. They worry about school.B. They dislike living with their parents.C. They have to be locked in to avoid troubles.D. They quarrel a lot with other family members.26. Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents ____________.A. go to clubs more often with their childrenB. are much stricter with their childrenC. car e less about their children’s lifeD. give their children more freedom27. According to the writer, teenage rebellion __________.A. may be a false beliefB. is common nowadaysC. existed only in the 1960sD. resulted from changes in families28. What is the passage mainly about? _________A. Negotiation in family.B. Education in family.C. Harmony in family.D. Teenage trouble in family.CWhy do human beings still risk their lives under ground and doing one of the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in the world? It is an increasingly urgent question, given the recent mining accidents in Sago, W. Va and Huntington, Utah. A small group of engineers and robotics experts look forward to a day in the not-too-distant future when robots and other technology do most of the dangerous mining work.Robotic technology, in particular, holds much promise, McAteer says, especially when it comes to mapping mines and rescuing trapped miners --- the special operations of the mining industry. One of the first mining robots was developed five years ago at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. It was called Groundhog. It used lasers(激光器) to “see” in dark tunnels and map abandoned mines—some of the most dangerous work in the business. The latest design is called Cave Crawler. It’s a bit smaller than Groundhog, and even more advanced. It can take photos and videos and has more sensors that can detect the presence of dangerous gases. Incredibly, the robot has a real sense of logic. If it comes across an obstacle it gets momentarily confused. It has to think about what to do and where to go next. Sometimes it throws a fit just like a real person. The greatest problem, though, is cost. The money of the earliest research project was provided by the government, but that money had dried up, and it’s not clear where future money will come from. Partly for that reason, and partly because of advances in safety, mining is not nearly as dangerous as it was in the past. Since 1990, fatalities(致命性) have declined by 67% and injuries by 51% , according to the National Mining Association. Some experts predict that robots in mines will serve much of the same function that they do in the automotive industry. The robots do the most boring and dangerous jobs, but won’t get rid of the need for human workers.29. The latest robot is more advanced than Groundhog, mainly because ____.A. it can map abandoned minesB. it can see in the dark tunnelsC. it’s smaller than GroundhogD. it has a real sense of logic30. The underlined phrase “throws a fit” in paragraph 4 probably means“______”A. gets angryB. gets sickC. becomes hungryD. becomes cheerful31. We can infer from the text that ______.A. the mining robots do most of the mining work at presentB. groundhog can discover the presence of dangerous gasesC. experts are trying to make robots help miners with dangerous workD. robots cannot do dangerous work in dark areas32. What can be the best title for the text? ________A. Mining Accidents in AmericaB. Robots in MinesC. Cave crawler, the Latest RobotD. The Future of RobotsDNews that Microsoft made a $44.6 billion bid to buy Yahoo resulted in heated discussions made by many Internet users. Here are some responses:Diane Burke of Weeks bury, KentuckyI think it would definitely be an interesting combination. Everyone recognizes the names Yahoo and Microsoft, but everyone also says, “Did you Google it?” Such a catchphrase (时髦话) is going to be hard to beat.Shaun Carney of Laurelville, OhioI think the merger (合并) will provide more competitions for Google. I don’t think the merger will allow Microsoft to develop faster than Google, though. I believe the increased competitionthis merger brings will force Google to stay on top of its game by offering more fresh and original Internet tools and expanding on the tools it already offers.Toni Suarez of Hacienda Heights, CaliforniaI view the merger as a necessary element in preventing a monopolization (垄断). Perhaps it would bring better high technology innovations to e-mail and help in researching and developing a better Internet!Rick R. of Edgewater, FloridaIt sounds like a disaster to me. If this were to happen, I would stop using my Yahoo e-mail ac count because I don’t like the feeling of Microsoft spying upon my business. I will sign up for Google.Antonio Glosser of Kansas City, MissouriRight now, Yahoo offers a lot of features and tools at no cost for all different levels of Internet users. Micr osoft seeks nothing but profit. Undoubtedly, they’ll do nothing other than find ways to start removing Yahoo’s formerly non-priced features. Microsoft’s greed will ruin the great thing that Yahoo currently is.33. How many companies are mentioned in the passage?A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.34. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. Shaun’s attitude towards Google is passive.B. Toni believes the Internet will have a promising future.C. Rick will support Google after the merger.D. Antonio is afraid that the merger will cost Yahoo’s free features.35. The passage is mainly about ______.A. opinions on the merger of Yahoo and MicrosoftB. the strengths of Yahoo and MicrosoftC. the strengths and weaknesses of large companiesD. the future of Yahoo and Microsoft第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
