Summary:In the Victorian period, a rural clergyman in England tells Durbeyfield, a simple farmer, that he is descended from the illustrious d'Urberville family, now extinct; or maybe not. Durbeyfield sends his daughter Tess to check on a family named d'Urberville living in a manor house less than a day's carriage ride away. Alec d'Urberville is delighted to meet his beautiful cousin, and he seduces her with strawberries and roses. But Alec is no relation to Tess; he has gotten his illustrious name and coat of arms by purchasing them. Alec falls in love with Tess, seduces/rapes her, and she leaves, pregnant; back at home, the baby dies. Some time later, Tess begins work as a milkmaid, and there she meets her true love Angel Clare. Angel believes her completely innocent. They fall in love, but Angel does not learn of her previous relationship with Alec until their wedding night, and rejects her. Deserted by her husband, Tess meets Alec again, and poverty forces her to resume their relationship. Angel returns from travelling abroad, remorseful at his treatment of Tess, but finds her with Alec. Tess murders Alec in order to run away with Angel. They spend one night of happiness together, before she is arrested.(学习的目的是增长知识,提高能力,相信一分耕耘一分收获,努力就一定可以获得应有的回报)。

Tess of the D’UrbervillesTess of the D’Urbervilles is Thomas Hardy’s most famous novel. The heroine, Tess, is figured with pure and beauty. She was born in a poor village family. One day, her father knows that he is the offspring of the D’Urbervilles, an old aristocratic family. Persuaded by her mother, Tess goes to claim kindred with a prosperous D’Urbervilles family. Unfortunately, she is seduced by Alec, the son in that pseudo D’Urbervilles family, and conceived a child. After giving birth to a child who dies in infancy, Tess leaves home and works at a diary farm. She meets Angel, son of a clergyman, at there. They fall in love with each other, and then they get married. On their wedding night, Tess tells Angel the suffering about what Alec do to her. After hearing Tess’confession, Angel leaves her for Brazil mercilessly. Privation forces Tess to work at a farm. She becomes weak and sick. At that time, Tess meets Alec again. Alec becomes a pastor. Tess’beauty had quite turned his head. So he tries to woo Tess, despite his faith and duty. Her father’s death and the family change impel Tess to ask Alec for help. So she becomes Alec’s mistress. When Angel comes back to make up with Tess, she is so sorrowful. Her remorse and resentment drive her to kill Alec. In the end, Tess is arrested, and hanged. Just like the book said: “The gods had finished playing with Tess.” Tragedy comes to an end.Tess of the D’Urbervilles is a novel which revealing the consciousness of feminism. And Tess is a girl filling with spirit of resistance in English Victorian age. At that time, women had little social status and were regarded as inferior than men. When Tess is no longer virginal, she is the only one suffering blame. But the real guilty man, Alec, is free from criticism. People are likely to pin the blame on women.A cynic like Angel is no exception. The prejudice to female makes him abandon Tess, despite his making the same mistake as Alec and Tess. It is obviously unequal, let alone Tess is forced. But Tess has high self-esteem. Although she is not a nobleman, she has the noble personalities. After Alec seduces her, she can live affluently life by being Alec’s wife. But shedoesn’t subdue herself to marry a man whom she dislikes. She would rather live in village relying on her own efforts. Even if Tess loses her virginity, the essence of her spirit is still pure and immaculate. In the whole novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy focuses on Tess’downfall. Her parent’s indifference, husband’s abandoned and evil deceptions ruin her life. She is considered as a criminal woman. However, under Thomas Hardy’s pen, Tess is not a sinner but a pure woman who has self-respect, fortitudinous, brave self-sacrifice and independent. She is the daughter of nature. Her noble personalities get the better of the others. Thomas Hardy shows his respect to Tess, at the same time, he shows his sympathy to all the women in the real life. This impure society, argues Hardy,” punishes the honest and the conscientious.” It is the awareness of feminism. His Tess inspirits women to win their rights. Her tragedy strongly accuses that evil capitalist society.。
德伯家的苔丝(TESSOFTHEDURBERVILLES)第59章不详德伯家的苔丝(TESS OF THE DURBERVILLES)第59章The city of Wintoncester, that fine old city, aforetime capital of Wessex, lay amidst its convex and concave downlands in all the brightness and warmth of a July morning. The gabled brick, tile, and freestone houses had almost dried off for the season their integument of lichen, the streams in the meadows were low, and in the sloping High Street, from the West Gateway to the medieval cross, and from the medieval cross to the bridge, that leisurely dusting and sweeping was in progress which usually ushers in an old-fashioned market-day.From the western gate aforesaid the highway, as every Wintoncestrian knows, ascends a long and regular incline of the exact length of a measured mile, leaving the houses gradually behind. Up this road from the precincts of the city two persons were walking rapidly, as if unconscious of the trying ascent - unconscious through preoccupation and not through buoyancy. They had emerged upon this road through a narrow barred wicket in a high wall a little lower down. They seemed anxious to get out of the sight of the houses and of their kind, and this road appeared to offer the quickest means of doing so. Though they wereyoung they walked with bowed heads, which gait of grief the sun‟s rays smiled on pitilessly. One of the pair was Angel Clare, the other a tall budding creature - half girl, half woman - a spiritualized image of Tess, slighter than she, but with the same beautiful eyes - Clare‟s sister-in-law, …Liza-Lu. Their pale faces seemed to have shrunk to half their natural size. They moved on hand in hand, and never spoke a word, the drooping of their heads being that of Giotto‟s `Two Apostles‟.When they had nearly reached the top of the great West Hill the clocks in the town struck eight. Each gave a start at the notes, and, walking onward yet a few steps, they reached the first milestone, standing whitely on the green margin of the grass, and backed by the down, which here was open to the road. They entered upon the turf, and, impelled by a force that seemed to overrule their will, suddenly stood still, turned, and waited in paralyzed suspense beside the stone. The prospect from this summit was almost unlimited. In the valley beneath lay the city they had just left, its more prominent buildings showing as in an isometric drawing - among them the broad cathedral tower, with its Norman windows and immense length of aisle and nave, the spires of St Thomas‟s, the pinnacled tower of the College, and, more to the right, the tower and gables of the ancient hospice, where to this day the pilgrim may receive his dole of bread and ale. Behind the city sweptthe rotund upland of St Catherine‟s Hill; further off, landscape beyond landscape, till the horizon was lost in the radiance of the sun hanging above it.Against these far stretches of country rose, in front of the other city edifices, a large red-brick building, with level gray roofs, and rows of short barred windows bespeaking captivity, the whole contrasting greatly by its formalism with the quaint irregularities of the Gothic erections. It was somewhat disguised from the road in passing it by yews and evergreen oaks, but it was visible enough up here. The wicket from which the pair had lately emerged was in the wall of this structure. From the middle of the building an ugly flat-topped octagonal tower ascended against the east horizon, and viewed from this spot, on its shady side and against the light, it seemed the one blot on the city‟s beau ty. Y et it was with this blot, and not with the beauty, that the two gazers were concerned.Upon the cornice of the tower a tall staff was fixed. Their eves were riveted on it. A few minutes after the hour had struck something moved slowly up the staff, and extended itself upon the breeze. It was a black flag.`Justice‟ was done, and the President of the Immortals, in AEschylean phrase, had ended his sport with Tess. And the d‟Urberville knights and dames slept on in their tombs unknowing. The two speechlessgazers bent themselves down to the earth, as if in prayer, and remained thus a long time, absolutely motionless: the flag continued to wave silently. As soon as they had strength they arose, joined hands again, and went on.

Tess of the d’UrbervillesIn Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy has directly satirized nature. This novel revealed the tragedy of lower classes’ destiny and flayed hypocritical gentlemen and morals. In this novel, Hardy demonstrated his deep sense of moral sympathy for England’s lower classes, particularly for women. The novel, which indicated the tendency of anti-religious sentiments, against feudal morality and the laws of capitalists, was warmly received by the reading public though British upper class was bitter against it.In the novel, Thomas Hardy succeeded in portraying an artistic image- Tess. There were sensitivity and beauty to her that have nothing to do with looks. Her beauty is not kind of stunning beauty, but the more you approach to her, you will be more likely to indulge in her beauty. Although she is not an orthodox believer, she has her own pure pursuits of life and living criteria. Her integrated image of kindness and tenderness, tough-minded and plainness should own her a happy life. But it seems that God leaves her out.Alec in the novel is the son of a Manor owner, being dissolute and flirtatious in conduct; however, generally, he is not essentially a bad man. His strong desire to Tess is out of a sort of inherently desire and desire for possession. It’s very normal for such a young man.But he adopts a wrong way-he abducts Tess. He would like to take a part of responsibility of his behavior but Tess turn down his suggestion without hesitation. Tess’s self-respect can’t allow herself bend down to harm. Such a pure girl, should be so strong-mind to bear neighbor’s discrimination andsecular pressure and to take the consequences by herself. She has never asked Alec for help even when she is driven to the last ditch. Finally, Tess chooses to leave for another village where her past is not known and secures a job as a milkmaid at T albothays Dairy. She escapes from the old environment, meanwhile, prepares to make a new start. She fears a romantic love, at the same time, strongly looks forward to it. Anyway, she is only 21years old, she has the right to enjoy the pleasure that love can bring to her. There, she re-encounters Angel Clare who is eager for nature and full of dreams, is Tess’s Prince Charming, one of unfinished dreams in her girlhood. As for Angel Clare, Tess is part of his persistent vision. What he wants is a pure girlto be his wife. Such a match made in heaven will certainly wipe out spark of love. However, the process of their love is filled with difficulties and hardship. Tess, who is pure in mind, is tightly tided by worldly views so that she thinks she can’t marry to Clare for her unclean body. All the time she is hesitating about, bearing a keen pressure of sentiment and intellect, weather should her tell Angel about her past without reserve. The pain that Angel suffers in the pursuit of T ess is far away from Tess’s inner struggle. She could not confessto her lover for being terrified of losing him. And she could not give up the happiness within her grasp to refuse Clare against her will.At their wedding night, Angel confesses that he once had a brief affair with an older woman. When she hears this story, Tess feels sure that Angel will forgive her own indiscretion, and finally tells about her relationship with Alec. But things go contrary to her wishes. Angel, however, is appalled by Tess’s confession. His love to Tess is based on the sky garden of pure tower. Once the base is deprived, his love will collapse. His love is too fragile andvulnerable. Finally, he leaves for Brazil, leaving T ess alone, no messages, no letters and never back again. Tess has waiting for him eight years but can’t win back his hearts. When he realizes his heart, everything is too late. Tess has married to Alec after a long hopeless waiting. Afterwards, when Angel back, on the one hand, Tess felt happy, for her long waiting has come to an end. But on the other hand, she was more distressful and could not control her abhor to Alec. Thus, she killed the man who had destroyed her life.Though, Tess and Angel have spent the five happy days, her life is ended in revenge for love. But she is quiet when she faces the people coming to arrest her. She sa ys,”I was ready.”I know that Tess is happy at the last moment of her life. Because it’s her hope to be with the man who she loves sincerely and there is no need for her to worry about Angel’s despise.Tess, such a pretty and virtuous girl, should have led a happy and peaceful life, but God, “the president of the moral” plays a joke on her. The real tragedy is to display the process of ruining the perfection. Tess’s fate is a good representation.。
Book Report of Tess of the D’Urbervilles1.AuthorThe famous novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles is written by Thomas Hardy, (1840--1928), one of the representatives of English critical realism at the turn of the 19th century, was also a poet. He was famous for novels of character and Environment. Tess of the D’Urbervilles is one of the great works by Thomas Hardy.2.BackgroundE verything happening had its causes. Tess’s tragedy was also not accidental, which was caused by the cruel society, her poor family and her own nature. In the late 19th century, Britain became the leading industrial country in the world after the rapid development of the industrial revolution. The development of industry eroded the patriarchal order of the traditional agricultural society in England and disrupted the life styles and habits of the peasants formed in the rural environment for a long time. Many simple and honest farmers were in labor at this time, and they had to change from being self-sufficient to being employed and exploited as agricultural workers. At the end of the 19th century, Victorian novelist Thomas hardy, as a witness of such changes during this period, he felt struggling ——the traditional way of life with rural scenery were still attractive to him, therefore, emotionally, he hated the railways into the countryside and the labors with machines replacing manual labor. Tess of t he D’Urbervilles was created under such background.3.Main storyThe story is about the tragic life of Tess Durbeyfield, the daughter of a poor family. She is sent to work as a maid for d’Urbervilles, because she has to support her poor family. Tess is seduc ed by Alec, the son of the family which she serves for, and then gives birth to a child. However, the child dies in infancy, which makes her very depressed. After that, she goes to work on a dairy farm, and then she is engaged to Angel Clare, the son of a clergyman. On their wedding night, they tell each other about their past hoping to be forgiven by each other. However, Clare leaves her after that because he can’t accept the truth. Then Tess becomes a labor again. She is insulted and ill-treated by her ma ster. What’s worse, her father’s death and the bad condition of her family drive her to seek help from Alec who is a preacher now, and she can do nothing but to abbey him. Angel Clare comes back and wants to be reconciled to Tess, but the fact that Tess’s living with Alec hinders her from coming back to Clare. At last, Tess kills Alec in despair and she is soon arrested, tried and hanged.4.ThemesIt is the interactions between three main characters and conflictions that show the themes of this novel.Firstly, this novel indicates the development of industry and capitalism is ridiculous. Tess is an innocent and virtuous girl. Her tragedy began at the decision that she would come to Alec’s house on her famil y’s requirement. The reason for this is exactly the poverty. Indeed, this novel shows the poverty of ordinary family and the richness of the capitalists. This is a kind of contrast with sardonicism towards the true meaning of developing industry, and this also is what Thomas Hardy against.Secondly, it shows the objection to the traditional morality of capitalist. Tess was maiden nomore after she was cheated by Alec, which was obviously not the mistake of Tess, however, almost all the criticism came to her. Even when she told her husband Angel, who had ever loved her so deeply, he deserted her. It was really the so-called “traditional morality” that destroyed Tess. But Tess struggled. She took the criticism but still gave birth to a baby. When arguing with Angle, she even said “ That is not my fault!” This is the denying to traditional morality. But she surrendered to it as this thought had oppressed people for so long. And this is the reason for Hardy to write this novel, to reform the thought of people.Thirdly, this novel also declaimed the male-dominant society.Women living in this patriarchal society are doomed to be oppressed and controlled, unable to escape the fate of tragedy. In the eyes of the guardians of the mainstream discourse of patriarchal society, women are always in an attached and subordinate position. Tess, the innocent victim, was regarded as the opposite of the mainstream ideology of patriarchal society. Still, Tess struggled. After Tess told Angle about what she had ever suffered, Angle was shocked and deserted her. She begged Angle for forgiveness but later announced to get divorced with a letter. She criticized the prejudice of Angle. And this also made Tess a woman in new era of that period. The death of Tess was exactly the accusation of gender inequality.Fourthly, Hardy denounced the hypocrisy of Christian. He gave Angle the title that the son of pastor and meanwhile designed Alec as a pastor is to show how the Christian hypocritical. The Christians pretended to be kind with Christian masks, but their nature was not restricted by their belief. What they said was not at the same as what they did.Tess's tragedy is the tragedy of a pure and kind woman destroyed by the decadent ethics of the bourgeoisie, hypothetic religion and unjust legal system. And Tess's own bourgeois morality and religious moral consciousness, to a certain extent, also caused her tragedy. Her unable to get rid of the bondage of the traditional moral to oneself is the weak side of her character, in addition to Alec as representative's emerging bourgeoisie, this was the direct cause of Tess's misfortune. And represented by the Angel of the traditional ethics was a kind of invisible spirit more terrible persecution. The value of Tess's image was that she dared to challenge the forces that oppress her. However, in the face of powerful social forces, her resistance inevitably brought tragedy. Her tragic fate seemed to be that of a single person, but in fact, she symbolized the entire destiny of the British peasantry of the late 19th century.5.Writing styleThe literary style in Tess of the D'Urbervilles represents the style of that period. We can sum up the literary style in this period. They reveal the ruthless exploitation and political dishonesty to workers by capitalists, describe struggles and attempts of nobody. Their novels contain humanitarian inclination. The gloomy style stories always end up with a tragic ending, which make us think of it for a long time.Tess of the D'Urbervilles is a novel about character and environment novel. In this novel, the environment and the character interactions, foil and sympathize with each other. The emotions changes with colors and the characters and environment form an inseparable whole. The environmental foreshadowing reflects the character's destiny and emotion, and the character's emotional destiny endows the environment with more vitality. The two are in harmony and bring out the best in each other.Hardy used the description of nature, irony and symbolism. Among these, symbolism is the most important. (E.g. Tess’baby symbolized Tess’bad circumstances which were outof Tess’control. This baby was innocent having done nothing wrong, but it was punished by society for coming from such an evil act. Having been raped, Tess was also innocent of the crime, but she was still punished and pushed aside by society.)6.ConclusionHardy punished Tess to die in his novel, in order to awake some people of their equal rights and appeal to the reforms of traditional morality and hypocrisy religion masks. He is an writer with strong willingness not only to denounce the gloom aspects of society but also to change such situations. And that is why Tess of the D'Urbervilles can be wide spread, even flooded by the time.。
Tess of The D'UrbervillesThomas Hardy, the author of Tess of The D'Urbervilles, was one of the excellent novelist of the nineteenth century.Since he was a realistic author,Tess of The D'Urbervilles reflected his real society. This book described a charm of the tragic fate of the poor girl-Tess.She was the eldest daughter of a poor rural working family and looked markedly more mature than she was.Because of the parents' requirement,Tess came to the D'Urbervilles and met Alec Stoke D'Urbervilles. For the beauty of Tess,Alec pretended to help Tess and made her fed chickens in his manor.Three months later,he raped Tess .Tess was hate him and came back home, but she was pregnant and gave birth to a baby ,died for illness unfortunately. After going through a difficult period,Tess decided to start again and made another journey away from home. She came to a milk farm, while met her true love-Angel Clare. He was the son of a clergyman, but he was a freethinker and fallen in love with Tess.Soon, they got married. After wedding, they confessed their pasts to each other, and Tess forgave Angel's for his past indiscretions. But Angel could not put up with Tess for having a child with another man.So Angel abandoned Tess ,went to the Brazil on his own and Tess had to go back home.Because of her father's suddenly death and mother's bad body, the family had no house to live.Tess had no other choice only to a farm to drudge. While unfortunately,Alec appeared again in a minister.Alec entangled Tess constantly and persuaded her to see the reality in her relationship with Angle. For the family exited,Tess had to become Alec's mistress. In the other hand,Angle Clare went through a difficult experience in Brazil and returned from Brazil to look for Tess.Through the psychological struggle,Tess killed Alec and found Angle in the train.During the escaping life with Angle, they had a very happy couple life. But still could not change,Tess was arrested finally and died.Tess could be a happy girl though her family was very poor. But “noble, status, and money” were strongly in her father’s mind, just because of the discovery that a parson said to him. Without their horse’s carrying load, life became rather difficult. Tess blamed herself completely, and she wondered what she could help her parents. Then T ess obeyed her mother’s idea, to work at the D’Urberville’s home. After reading this book,it gives me great impression. There is no doubt that the tragedy of Tess, firstly is the social tragedy. In that age,Tess lived in the bottom of the society. She was very simple and wanted a simple life with her true love, but she had no power to defenseherself. Therefore she lost her purity. In other words,Angle also did a wrong thing and it even more serious than Tess's crime.Tess had owned the traditional virtue and the spirit of selfless dedication. The same, she was the victim of law.But perhaps no love,no hatred,no dignity, death was the best way for Tess to extricate herself.Tess did not make any mistakes, but at last, she born all punishments and sufferings. What we cay is that all the panic of Tess comes from the unfair society. To be honest, this book is really worth reading. It gives me great influence.。

德伯家的苔丝英文作文德伯家的苔丝英文作文This is a book of grievous mood. A beautiful young girl’s life was destroyed gradually and really---not by her energy, but by the people who said love to her. What kind of this love is? What make the love destroy its lover? Tess could be a happy girl though her family was very poor. But noble, status, and money were bly in her father’s mind, just because of the discovery that a parson said to him. Without their hors e’s carrying load, life became rather difficult. Tess blamed herself completely, and she wondered what she could help her parents. Then Tess obeyed her mother’s idea, to work at the d’Urberville’s home, and met her cousin, Alec d’Urbervilles. This then was the beginning. T ess had to meet the wrong man, and one who was so bly attracted to her. Yet to the right man, she was only a half-forgotten impression from an evening’s dancing party in a country field. This mistake was to have tragic results. Alec used his clever brain to help Tess’s parents, and this made Tess feel grateful to him. Because of her slackening vigilance, Alec’s intention came true ---Tess would be maiden no more.As the people of her village said, It was to be. And from now on, Tess’s life was to be completely different. Tess left Alec’s home, returned her village. But all had changed, Tess wouldn’t be happy, people in village wouldn’t see her as before. After her baby’s death, she had to leave her home, went to a far place. Perhaps at that time we should thank Alec, thank baby’s death, or Tess wouldn’t leave her home and met Angel Clare, her right man in the dairy. Tess was a so lovely girl that Angel was soon crazy for her. At last, they conquered many difficulties and gotmarried. But Tess’s experience was still her mortal wound, Angel couldn’t accept the truth and left her. The story came to its turning point again. When Angel realized his mistake and went back to look for Tess, all was too late, the poor girl again dropped into Alec’s tra p. With the intertwine of love and hatred, Tess had to end herself with a tragic results. God played with Tess so much. When her right man appeared, God yet didn’t give her happiness. Tess’s parents loved her, but it was just an instinctive love; Alec said love to her, but it was a evil love; Angel said love to her as well, but it was a immature and selfish love. He wanted Tess to forgive him, but he couldn’t forgive Tess. Tess didn’t make any mistakes, but at last, she born all punishments and sufferings. At first, God had let the two persons miss each other.A tragedy was doomed. But perhaps no love, no hatred, no dignity, death was the best way for Tess to extricate herself. We have nothing to do but watching world changing, destroying Tess, then continuing changing. The tragedy recurs every day in fact. I can’t help asking, have we missed our happiness?。
