My View On Tess Of The D’urbervillesBill ChengSon of a mason,Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), one of the most out-standing literalism and tragedy novelists in the UK during the Victorian period, was born near Dorchester, the area that later became the famous“Wessex”in many of his novels. In time sequence ,Hardy’s tremendous reputation was obtained by the following fictions. Under the Greenwood Tree(1872),Tess Of D’urbervilles(1891) and Jude de Obscure(1896).On January 11,1928,this last important novelist of the 19th century died.Well, today I’m going to focus on Tess Of D’urbervilles and make some simple comments on it To summarise the content,Tess is a beautiful ,innocent peasant girl. The poverty of the family forces her to merry to the D’urbervilles.Alec, the young master of the D’urbervilles,a dandy ,seduces Tess and impregnates her. Then people’s prejudice forces Tess to leave home to work on a dairy farm. There she meets Angel Clare. Then two fall in love with each other. On their wedding night ,Tess reveals her own tragic past, but Angel wouldn’t forgive her and abandoned her that very night.Helpless and hopeless,Tess has to wander from place to place, doing the hardest work and bearing the intolerable sinsult. After her father’s death,Tess undertakes the whole burden of the family. Then she has nothing to do but goes back to Alec, now a preacher. Unexpectedly, before long,Angel returns from abroad out of his repentance and guilty to Tess. Then, the poor couple reunions and Tess ,puts all the blame of her unhappiness on Alec, kills him.She flees with Angel, but finally, anfter becoming five days escapee,Tess is caught by the police and hanged to the public.Tess, a woman who committed astounded crime and was disdained by the public, was described as “A pure woman”by the writer in the sub-title of this novel. As far as I’m concerned,it’s an irony to those hypocrites, just like Alec, in Hardy’s period. No one can deny that Tess is one of Hardy’s masterpieces. The story reflect the sharp and fierce conflicts between the bourgeois society and peasantry towards the end of 19th century.Though, it was quite far from our China’s current situation. As far as I’m concerned,it still have some significant meanings to our nation, which is involved in the transformation of the society. Here,I don’t intend to analyse Alec and Angel. The former is obvious ,the later is complex. In terms of Tess, she is a pure and a littlte bit ignorant woman who was brought up even dominated with the traditional womanly moral values.Of course,Tess has some virtues, for instance, perseverance, dedication ,self-esteem and thrift. What’s more, she dares to rebellion the restriction to pursue the true love worth being praised. But her efforts are all in vain,to some extent,it’s inevitable.Living at the turn of the century,Hardy witnessed numerous injustice even cruel incidents due to the conflict I mentioned above. On the one hand,Hardy showed great sympathy for those victims,On the other hand,He was effortless in helping them. It’s evident that, his attitude towards life had negative impact on Hardy’s works. He believed that a man’s fate was predeterminatedly tragic, driven by a combined force of “nature”,both character and society.Let’s back to the Tess .Why Tess is so memorable.I think,It was Tess tragic destiny, namely, family society even religion that devasasted her.I’m sure,It was a common phenomena in Victorian period.Anyway,Thomas Hardy was the milestone of of the Victorian period in UK.Though Tess is a tragedy. The author still provide positive hope for reader. At the end,Angelmerries Tess’s sister-Lisa.That can be regarded as the symbol as the continuity of Tess’s affection for Angel.。

Tess of the D’UrbervillesTess of the D’Urbervilles is Thomas Hardy’s most famous novel. The heroine, Tess, is figured with pure and beauty. She was born in a poor village family. One day, her father knows that he is the offspring of the D’Urbervilles, an old aristocratic family. Persuaded by her mother, Tess goes to claim kindred with a prosperous D’Urbervilles family. Unfortunately, she is seduced by Alec, the son in that pseudo D’Urbervilles family, and conceived a child. After giving birth to a child who dies in infancy, Tess leaves home and works at a diary farm. She meets Angel, son of a clergyman, at there. They fall in love with each other, and then they get married. On their wedding night, Tess tells Angel the suffering about what Alec do to her. After hearing Tess’confession, Angel leaves her for Brazil mercilessly. Privation forces Tess to work at a farm. She becomes weak and sick. At that time, Tess meets Alec again. Alec becomes a pastor. Tess’beauty had quite turned his head. So he tries to woo Tess, despite his faith and duty. Her father’s death and the family change impel Tess to ask Alec for help. So she becomes Alec’s mistress. When Angel comes back to make up with Tess, she is so sorrowful. Her remorse and resentment drive her to kill Alec. In the end, Tess is arrested, and hanged. Just like the book said: “The gods had finished playing with Tess.” Tragedy comes to an end.Tess of the D’Urbervilles is a novel which revealing the consciousness of feminism. And Tess is a girl filling with spirit of resistance in English Victorian age. At that time, women had little social status and were regarded as inferior than men. When Tess is no longer virginal, she is the only one suffering blame. But the real guilty man, Alec, is free from criticism. People are likely to pin the blame on women.A cynic like Angel is no exception. The prejudice to female makes him abandon Tess, despite his making the same mistake as Alec and Tess. It is obviously unequal, let alone Tess is forced. But Tess has high self-esteem. Although she is not a nobleman, she has the noble personalities. After Alec seduces her, she can live affluently life by being Alec’s wife. But shedoesn’t subdue herself to marry a man whom she dislikes. She would rather live in village relying on her own efforts. Even if Tess loses her virginity, the essence of her spirit is still pure and immaculate. In the whole novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy focuses on Tess’downfall. Her parent’s indifference, husband’s abandoned and evil deceptions ruin her life. She is considered as a criminal woman. However, under Thomas Hardy’s pen, Tess is not a sinner but a pure woman who has self-respect, fortitudinous, brave self-sacrifice and independent. She is the daughter of nature. Her noble personalities get the better of the others. Thomas Hardy shows his respect to Tess, at the same time, he shows his sympathy to all the women in the real life. This impure society, argues Hardy,” punishes the honest and the conscientious.” It is the awareness of feminism. His Tess inspirits women to win their rights. Her tragedy strongly accuses that evil capitalist society.。
德伯家的苔丝读后感英文200字The story of Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy is a poignant and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition. The novel follows the life of Tess Durbeyfield, a young woman from a poor rural family, as she navigates the complexities of class, gender, and societal expectations in Victorian England. At the heart of the narrative is Tess's tragic journey, which is marked by a series of unfortunate events that ultimately lead to her downfall. From the moment she is sent to work for the wealthy d'Urberville family in the hopes of claiming a distant familial connection, Tess's life becomes a struggle against the unfair demands and expectations placed upon her by a society that prizes social status and purity over individual autonomy and personal fulfillment. The author's portrayal of Tess is both empathetic and unflinching. She is a complex and multifaceted character, possessing a strong moral compass and a deep sense of personal integrity, yet also vulnerable to the whims of fate and the cruelty of those around her. Her encounter with the charming but manipulative Alec d'Urberville, and her subsequent seduction and victimization, are harrowing to read, as Hardy masterfully depicts the power dynamics and societal double standards that contribute to Tess's tragic downfall. One of the novel's most poignant themes is the conflict between individual desires and societal expectations. Tess's desire for a simple life of love and contentment is constantly at odds with the rigid social norms and class divisions that dictate her choices and ultimately determine her fate. The author's exploration of this theme is both nuanced and devastating, as Tess's attempts to forge her own path are repeatedly thwarted by the unyielding demands of a society that refuses to see her as a fully autonomous human being. The narrative is further enriched by Hardy's vivid and evocative descriptions of the natural world. The countryside of Wessex, where much of the story takes place, is portrayed as a serene and beautiful backdrop, yet one that is also intimately connected to the characters' emotional and spiritual journeys. Tess's deep connection to the land and her innate understanding of the rhythms of the natural world stand in stark contrast to the artificial and constraining structures of Victorian society, further highlighting the tensions that drive the central conflict. In addition to its thematic depth, the novel is also a masterful work of literature, showcasing Hardy's exceptional storytelling abilities andhis command of language. The prose is both lyrical and accessible, effortlessly transporting the reader into the world of the characters and their struggles. The author's use of symbolism, foreshadowing, and literary devices is particularly noteworthy, adding layers of meaning and emotional resonance to the narrative. One of the most striking aspects of the novel is its ability to elicit a range of emotions from the reader. Tess's journey is both heart-wrenching and uplifting, as she grapples with the weight of societal expectations and the consequences of her own actions. The reader is left to ponder the nature of justice, morality, and the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity.Ultimately, Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a powerful and enduring work of literature that continues to captivate and challenge readers worldwide. Through its masterful storytelling and its profound exploration of the human condition, the novel stands as a testament to the timeless and universal themes that lie at the heart of the human experience.。
