People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road covered almost 6500 kilometers. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices (香料), cloth, valuable stones and gold. There is a famous old story along the old road. It is said that Roman soldiers travelled through central Asia. They started to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese village of Liqian, Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the story of blue-eyed villages of China was started.During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from the Mediterranean, Persian, Magyar, Armenian, Bactrian , Indian and Chinese areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures. In modern times, the old Silk Road routes are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C.to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain isdamagedw hen they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he/ she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.1.(小题1)How many people in the world are left-handed now?A.Less than one sixth.B.More than a half.C.About 40%.D.The passage doesn’t tell us.2.(小题2)Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “damaged” in this passage? A resolution is a firm decision to do something. The most popular New Year's resolutions are losing weight, saving money, getting fit, and stopping smoking. About 45% of Americans make one or more resolutions every year. However, only 8% of people actually succeed. There are several ways to help your chances of achieving your resolution. The first way is to be realistic(现实的). Setting small goals is much better than trying to make big life changes. 35% of New Year's resolutions fail because of this. If you were planning to get in shape, for example, you will have a better chance if you start with a little exercise each day. People who try to run 5 kilometres each morning from January 1st will likely give up soon.Another tip is to plan out how to achieve your resolution. If you want to lose weight, for example, decide what kind of food you will stop eating and how often you will exercise. Making a detailed list will help you. Once you have made your plan, stick to it! It is important to always followyour plan.Another way to make sure your resolution succeeds is to track(跟踪) your progress. If your plan is to lose weight, write down how much weight you lose each week. Make a chart of your weight loss and put it somewhere you can see it. This will help you to keep making an effort. Almost 33% of people who fail their New Year's resolutions do so because they didn't track their progress.1.Which is TRUE about New Year's resolutions? The graph shows the results of a survey in which students were asked about their preferred devices for going online. There are four main devices in their answers: a smartphone, a laptop, a tablet and a desktop computer.
From the chart it is clear that most students prefer to use smartphones and laptops. Nearly a third of students prefer to go online with a smartphone. Thirty per cent like to use a laptop. A desktop computer accounts for fourteen per cent of users' preferred devices. Only few students prefer a device other than these main four.
In conclusion, since mobile and portable devices are the most popular choices, it is clear that many
students like to take them around. The desktop is too heavy to carry and hard to use, so it is the least popular.。
