BEIJING, Aug. 11(Xinhua) --- Chinese weightlifter Chen Yanqing retained her women’s 58kg Olympic title in Beijing on Monday with a total result of 244kg.

Chen, 29, has become the first strongwoman in the world to successfully defend her Olympic title since the women’s weightlifting entered summer Olympics in Sydney eight years ago.

“The Athens fold belongs to me, but this one belongs to all the people supporting me,” she said.

Chen made her fame in 1997 by claiming the jerk (挺举)and total golds in the world championships and ruled the class by keeping breaking the world records.

Chen didn’t try to break the world record during her competition and she has an explanation.

“The world record in the snatch(抓举)and the total belongs to me, so to win the gold was more important,” the veteran said.

It’s the third gold for the Chinese weightlifting team, after Chen Xiexia won the women’s 48kg class on Saturday and Long Qinquan claimed the title in the men’s 56kg class Sunday, and the eighth gold for the Chinese delegation at the Games.

Passage two

Questions 38 to 42 are based on the following passage.

What is happiness? Most researchers agree that it involves an assessment(评价)of the good and bad in our lives. It’s the emotional balance sheet we keep that allows us to say honestly whether we’re living a happy life, in spite of bad thing now and then.

Marriage has taken a lot of hits since the 1960s. it’s been said to hold many people, especially women, back from their full potential to be happy. Don’t believe it.

In 2004, 42 percent of married Americans said they were very happy. Just 23 percent of never-married people said this. The happiness numbers were even lower for other groups. Only 20 percent of those who were widowed, 17 percent of those who were divorced, and 11 percent of those who were separated but no divorced said they were happy. Overall, married people were six times more likely to say that they were very happy than to report that they were not too happy. And generally speaking, married women say they’re happy more often than married men.

Marriage isn’t just associated with happiness--- it brings happiness, at least for a lot of us. One 2003 study that followed 24,000 people for more than a decade showed a significant increase in happiness after people married. For some, the happiness increase wore off in a few years, and they ended up back at their premarriage happiness levels. But for others, it lasted as long as a lifetime.

D) In the United States, 23 percent of people were never-married.

41. Among the people investigated in 2004, those who seemed to be least happy were _____.

C) Marriage brought happiness to all the married people.

D) Most people remained at their premarriage happiness levels

Passage three

Questions 43 to 47 are based on the following passage.

After years of false starts, with the first commercial sales possible within months, a new industry selling motor fuel made from waste is getting a big push in the United States. Many companies have announced plans to build plants that would take in material like wood chips, garbage or crop waste and turn out motor fuels. For decades scientists have known it was possible to convert waste to fuel. But success is far from assured. Some of the latest announcements come from small companies whose dreams may be bigger than their bank accounts. They are counting on billions in government funds. Big technological problems remain, and even if they can be solved, no one is sure what unintended consequences will emerge or what it will really cost to produce this type of fuel.

Virtually any material containing hydrogen, carbon and oxygen could potentially be turned into motor fuel. That includes plastics, construction debris(废渣), forest and lawn trimmings(修剪下来的废料), wood chips, wheat straw and many other types of agricultural waste. The potential fuels include ethanol(乙醇), which can be blended with gasoline ,or other liquids that could displace gasoline entirely. Much of the new money flowing into the field is coming from Silicon Valley, where the venture capitalists who gave the world the Internet revolution see an opportunity to do something similar with the fuel supply. What has been done is small in the scheme of American fuel demand, but it may set the stage for important growth if those first projects prove that the economics can work.

43. How successful is the development of a waste-to-fuel industry in the United State?

A) Motor fuel has been turned out in large quantity.

B) A breakthrough in the industry is highly expected.

C) There have been only several false starts so far.

D) The industry is supported by the government.

44. According to the author, even if technological problems are solved, ______.

A) success can not be assured B) no support is expected

C) serious consequences will emerge D) waste can not be turned to fuel

45. To carry out their plans successfully, small companies are expecting ______.

A) more scientific research on waste conversion

B) large amount of money from the government

C) solutions to technological problems

D) reduction of the cost to produce motor fuel

46. Which of the following is considered as potential fuel to replace gasoline?.

A) Ethanol. B) Liquids.

C) Construction debris D) Agricultural waste

47. The venture capitalists are willing to invest in the waste-to-fuel industry because______?

A) it is connected with the Internet B) it will increase fuel demand

C) it is similar with the fuel supply D) it emerges as a big opportunity

Beijing has extended its ban on operating outdoor barbecues from the city center outward to selected suburbs, according to municipal authorities. A year ago, Beijing banned restaurants from operating outdoor barbecues within the fourth ring road area. And now, the ban has extended to several suburbs, including Mentougou, Fangs- han, Tongzhou, Shunyi, Daxing, Pinggu and Miyun. The barbecue ban was announced to reduce Beijing' s air pollution, as barbecue has long been accused as one of the major contributors to haze. According to Wang Yuesi, a researcher from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Chinese Academy of Sciences, barbecuing can generate a lot of PM 2.5, harmful airborne particles measur- ing less than 2.5 microns in diameter. "Considering the seriousness of the air pollution in Beijing, we have to ban everything that may do harm to our environment!" Wang said. The issue has divided Chinese netizens, as half agreed with the policy while the other half called this grand plan nothing but "empty talk. "

英语三级考试真题及答案

2006年4月英语三级考试真题及答案 ??? Part I Reading Comprehension? (30%) Directions:? There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly ail the teachers are women, mostly married. (76) The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness. 1. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children__________. A. sensible and sensitive???? B. competitive and interested C. curious and friendly????? D. happy and co-operative 2. Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think__________. A. children are reluctant to help each other B. schools lay too much emphasis on co-operation C. children should grow up with competitive ideas D. schools give little actual instruction to children 3. The author's attitude towards American education can be best described as__________. A. favorable????????????? B. negative C. tolerant??????????????? D. unfriendly 4.? The American educational system emphasizes__________. A. material wealth????????? B. competition C. co-operation??????????? D. personal benefit 5. The word "sociable" (Line 8, Paragraph 2) most probably means__________. A. fond of talking freely B. friendly with other people C. concerned about social welfare D. happy at school Passage 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:
