The main problem in discussing American popular culture is also one of its main characteristics; it won't stay American. No matter what it is, whether it is films, food and fashion, music, casual sports or slang, it's soon at home elsewhere in the world. There are several theories why American popular culture has had this appeal. One theory is that is has been "advertised" and marketed through American films, popular music, and more recently, television. 1 They are, after all, in competition with those produced by other countries. Another theory, probably a more common one, is that American popular culture is internationally associated with something called "the spirit of America". 2 The final theory is less complex: American popular culture is popular because a lot of people in the world like it. Regardless of why its spreads, American popular culture is usually quite rapidly adopted and then adapted in many other countries. 3 Black leather jackets worn by many heroes in American movies could be found, a generation later, on all those young men who wanted to make this manly-look their own. Two areas where this continuing process is most clearly seen are clothing and music. Some people can still remember a time when T-shirts, jogging clothes, tennis shoes, denim jackets, and blue jeans were not common daily wear everywhere. Only twenty years ago, it was possible to spot an American in Paris by his of her clothes. No longer so: those bright colors, checkered jackets and trousers, hats and socks which were once made fun in cartoons are back again in Paris as the latest fashion. 4 The situation with American popular music is more complex because in the beginning, when it was still clearly American, it was often strongly resisted. Jazz was once thought to be a great danger to youth and their morals, and was actually outlawed in several countries. Today, while still showing its rather American roots, it has become so well established. Rock 'n' roll and all its variations, country & western music, all have more or less similar histories. They were first resisted, often in America as well, as being "low-class", and then as "a danger to our nation's youth". 5 And then the music became accepted and was extended and developed, and exported back to the U.S. A）As a result, its American origins and roots are often quickly forgotten. "Happy Birthday to You," for instance, is such an everyday song that its source, its American copyright, so to speak, is not remembered. B）But this theory fails to explain why American films, music, and television programs are so popular in themselves. C）American in origin, informal clothing has become the world's first truly universal style. D）The BBC, for example, banned rock 'n' roll until 1962. 从2005年起，考研英语阅读部分增设了"新题型"，旨在"考查考生对诸如连贯性、一致性等语段特征及文章结构的理解"，题量设置为5道题目，总分值为10分，可以说新题型是得分率最低的题型。

下面，就新题型的复习方法为广大2011年的考生提出以下一些建议，助你突破考研英语新题型！

第一、新题型主要是考察考生对考点空格前后句子关联的把握。

因此要很好地把握文章里单句之间的关系，因为这种关系很重要，以方便考察两种题。一是七选五，二是段落排序。

第二、新题型主要是从全局角度考察大家对文章逻辑的把握。

要求考生从整体上把握文章的逻辑结构和内容上的联系，理解句子之间、段落之间的关系，对诸如连贯性、一致性等语段特征有较强的意识和熟练的把握，并具备运用语法知识分析和理解长难句的能力。和阅读的Part A部分不一样，新题型可以多做点模拟题目，因为这种题目模拟题与真题的偏差相对会比较小。

第三、要提升考生概括和提炼段落大意的能力。

一段文章，总体上讲的是什么？怎么样用简单、简洁的语言把这一段文章的总体意思概括起来，这是段落标题类。在一个段落里面，我们如何把握总体上讲了什么东西，这是我们考生平常阅读里欠缺的一个能力。建议大家多多练习提炼段落大意的能力，可以尝试每次看完一个段落就用简短汉语或者英文把段落主旨写在段落旁边。

此外，要想新题型拿高分，建议大家在复习过程中还要注意做到以下几个做题基本技巧：

1、浏览选项。浏览选项说的直白些，就是找选项的第一句话，抓关键句中的主题词。这些主题词的词性多以名词、动词为特点。尤其要注意其中的专属名词和标志词。如人名、地名、连接词、数字等。通过这些词我们往往能反推出文章里应该有的内容，如果能找到这样的内容，答案就会十分清楚。因此建议大家在浏览选项时，将主题词和信号词找出并划记下来，然后再向下做题。

这个题型的区分度不太理想(错一个等于错两个)，因此从改革这四年以来从来没有被考过，但考生还是需要认真准备，了解其中的做题技巧。做这个题型的核心就在“衔接”这两个字。一定要搞清楚段落与段落之间的关系。因为文章首段和末段是确定的，所以这个题型的解题步骤为：

1)浏览给出的首末段。得出大意，重点查看两者间的关系，预测中间可能的逻辑；

2)把五个备选段落都浏览一遍，重点是段落的首末句；

3)根据首段的末句，查到五个备选中能够与之匹配的首句，确定答案；

4)根据确定的答案，以该段落的末句再确定下段的首句，以此类推，解答所有题目。

这个题型中特别注意的是在查找段与段之间的衔接时重点关注代词。因为代词往往指代前文出现过的名词，所以如果备选项的段首出现了代词，一定要注意在排序衔接时能否与前文相匹配。另外，各段之间的关系可能也会通过一些表示时间先后，次序先后或逻辑关系的词汇进行排列。

概括标题/信息匹配

这两个题型在一定意义上是一致的，都要求对副标题和段落例子进行匹配。07年考过一次，依然存在考的可能性，做这个题时把握住一个词就行了：“主题词”。在标题和例子之间找到两者相匹配的中心词是整个做题过程中最重要的任务。

1) 认真研读文章第一个副标题前的一句话。

因为文章往往很长，我们没有办法通读，但是不阅读文章我们就不能知道各个副标题有何作用。因此不管是选标题还是选例子，了解每个副标的分类的依据很重要。在第一个副标前往往就会明确说明各个副标的作用，常会出现像tips, steps, measures, strategies等表示步骤，措施意思的词汇；

2)查看各个副标(不管是作为选项还是文章内容)，得出其中的核心概念，往往是名词，这会是做题的重要依据；

3)查看各个例子段落，重点看首末句，如果中间有出现对比转折等等，那么对比转折之后才是重点。从首末句或主题句中体会出整个段落的核心意思；
