A Brief Introduction to OUCOcean University of China (OUC) is a comprehensive university under the direct administration of the State Ministry of Education, which offers courses in Science, Engineering, Agronomy (Fisheries), Economics, Liberal Arts, Pharmaceutics, Management, Law, Education and History, etc. This University is especially renowned for its disciplines in Oceanography and Fisheries and has been approvedas one of the universities with "Project 211" and "Project 985" for intensive construction of their key disciplines.The University occupies an area of 200 hectares with a total classroom and office space of940,000 square meters with Colleges (Schools) of Physical and Environmental Oceanography, Information Science and Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Marine Life Science, Marine Geo-science, Fisheries, Engineering, Mathematics, Management, Economics, Foreign Languages, Arts, Law, Environmental Science and Technology, Continuing Education, Applied Technology, Material Science and Engineering, International Education, Public Administration, Medicine and Pharmaceutics, and Food Science and Engineering.As one of the first universities approved to confer degrees at all levels and also approved by theState Academic Degree Committee to entitle Ph.D. supervisors, OUC now provides seven programs for post-doctoral research, and is entitled to authorize the programs leading to doctoral degrees Oceanography, Fisheries, Environmental Science and Engineering. OUC also offers 39 programs for Ph.D. degrees, 76 programs for master's degrees and 71programs for Bachelor's degrees. OUC is entitled to confer master's degrees in 10 areas of specialize engineering. The University owns such five national key disciplines as Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Marine Biology, Aquatic Product Processing & Preservation Engineering and Aquaculture as well as one National Research Center for Marine PharmaceuticalEngineering Technology, one UNESCO Chinese Center of Marine Biotechnology, six key laboratories of the State Ministry of Education in the disciplines of Physical Oceanography, Ocean Remote Sensing, Agriculture, Marine Drugs, Benthal Resources and Exploration Technology and Marine Ecological Environment, as well as nine provincial level key disciplines and six provincial level key laboratories. There are eight disciplines such as Physical Oceanography, Environmental Oceanography, Marine Biology, Fisheries, Marine Pharmaceutics and Ocean Remote Sensing as well as Medicine and Material Science and Engineering, which provide professorship of "Cheung Kong Scholars Programs". OUC was the first university to theapproved by the State as the base for fundamental research and teaching staff training in Oceanography, Marine Chemistry and Life Science & Technology.The University has over 21,000 registered students, including 5,000 doctoral or master's degree students, over 10,200 undergraduates and 1,200 international students. OUC has currently a total number of more than 2,300 faculty members and administrative staff. Among them there are 400 professors, 460 associate professors and lab technicians, as well as quite a few nation-wide or world-recognized experts and scholars including three academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, four academicians ofChinese Academy of Engineering, and over 200 Ph.D. supervisors. Mr. WANG Meng, the Vice Chairman of the Chinese Writers Association as well as a famous modern Chinese writer, is one of our professors, advisors and also the Dean of our College of Humanities.The University boasts an advanced laboratory center, which has over 70 laboratories for teaching and experiments, occupies a total area of 10,000 square meters. We also have "Dong Fang Hong 2", a research vessel with a displacement of 3,500 tons. The ship can be used for both teaching and scientific research. The University Library has been approved as one of the 15 centers for the latest Literature Search bythe State Ministry of Education. The Academic Journal of Ocean University of China in editions both natural science and social science are periodically issued in China and abroad, and the OUC publishing house has produced great number of excellent books during the past few years.
