HOW TO ANSWER IELTS QUESTIONS – PART 1
In this part, you will be expected to answer some general questions about yourself, your home/family/hometown, work/study, and your interests. It would last around 4-5 min. Answer the question directly with a short explanation or example. Treat it like you are conversing with someone you meet for the first time. These are easy questions and you are expected to give a response with no allocated thinking time.
You will be marked on
-fluency and coherence
-range and accuracy of your vocabulary, including the use of idioms
-grammatical range and accuracy
-pronunciation
(will talk about this in more depth in a later week)
***Listen carefully to the question, to decide what is expected of your answer.
Do you work or are you a student? (are the following responses appropriate?) ∙I’m a student. (too short, appears rude. Expand your answer)
∙I finished my studies last year.(doesn‟t answer the question about what you are doing currently)
∙I’m a student. I’m studying economics at uni versity. I should graduate next year and then I hope to find a job in finance. (good!!)
∙I’m an architect and have been one for the last 15 years. It’s a very fulfilling career which pays very well and it gives me a great deal of job satisfaction. I always wanted to be an architect when I grew up and I first joined my father’s practice when I graduated from university. I have been responsible for many projects and I’m currently working on designing a school in my home town.
It’s a very interesting project…. (too long, do not give your life story here. The
questioner will ask further questions about other aspects. Just answer the question directly, and expand it with an additional one or two sentences.)
∙Well, actually I’m doing both. I’m studying logistics at Wanli Zhejiang University, and I work as a tutor for a few primary students on the weekend
(good)
∙Well, I’m not in work at the moment because I’m studying privately for the IELTS exam. (good)
∙I’m a pilot in the Kuwaiti airforce actually. Though I’m also st udying English for the IELTS exam so I can go to flight school. (good)
Why did you choose to major in logistics? (note the use of past tense. If you are going to mention that your father chose your degree, refer to him using the correct pronoun “he advised me to study a major in logistics because…”)
Do you enjoy it?
(This is a yes/no question, but it is not good enough to simply say …Yes I enjoy it.” Y ou must expand your answer. You can do so in one of these ways:
∙why you enjoy it
∙what you particularly enjoy about it
∙how much you enjoy it
∙that you both enjoy it and dislike it
Do you like your life in university? (what are some vocabulary you can use instead of
What do you plan to do after you graduate? (note use of future tense) Instead of s aying “ I will…..”, to show your range of vocabulary, you can say
∙I intend to
∙I plan to
∙my plan is to
∙what I‟d really like to do is ∙my ambition is to
∙I intend to
∙I‟m going to
∙I might/may
∙its possible that I‟ll PRACTISE QUESTIONS
