Notre Dame CathedralNotre Dame Cathedral is a world famous masterpiece. In my eyes, the high reputation of it probably because the protagonist, Quasimodo. A badly ugly bell-ringer, growing up in a church, following Dom Claude Rollo the Archdeacon completely submit the Archdeacon.At the beginning, I thought Quasimodo didn’t have the sense of right and wrong. There was a period of time when my aversion to Quasimodo was increasing rapidly. However, I gradually find that he is so much innocent and pure. At the last part of the opus, Quasimodo unexpectedly found that the Archdeacon he following also fall into deep love with the gipsy-girl. To avoid others getting the girl, the Archdeacon attempted to kill the knight but didn’t succeed. The Archdeacon thought it should be destroyed if he can’t own himself. Finally, the Archdeacon cruelly killed the charming girl. Meanwhile, Quasimodo pushed the Archdeacon into abyss. What moved me most is the last few of paragraphs. When people found the corpse of the girl, they discovered another one, a malformed man corpse. He held the girl so tightly that he turned into powder when they were separated.A incarnation of justice, Rollo Archdeacon is actually the evil backstage manipulator. A beautiful but humble girl, La Esmeraldais actually so brave to love , to hate. An ugly monster, Quasimodo, changed from submitting to independently judge right or wrong. All he ever loved are died. His heart is so fervent that he is wiling to company with the girl’s corpse even if reduced to ashes.As the saying goes that ,don’t judge a person from his appearance. Good and evil can never be distinguished by one’s surface. When confronted with the seamy side of pretty things, everyone’s heart would be struck. However, sometimes these things truly happen in our daily life. Life isn’t so bad as we thought and it also isn’t so good as we thought. The archdeacon of Notre Dame, a certain Claude Frollo, falls in lust with Esmerelda - a gypsy dancer - who is much admired by the crowds of the city. At his instruction, Quasimodo, the grotesque hunchbacked bell-ringer of Notre Dame who he has befriended, kidnaps her. Her rescue is brought about by Phoebus de Chateaupers (Captain of the Royal Archers) and she falls mistakenly in love with his bravery when he is in reality something of a rogue and a braggart. Frollo follows Esmerelda to a meeting with Phoebus who he satbs before her leaving her to be sentenced to death for the murder. Quasimodo has become her effective slave due to a single act of kindness and takes her to sanctuary in the cathedral. Adventures follow including a band of gypsies attempt to sa ve Esmerelda from the cathedral, the disguised Frollo’s persuasion of the girl to leave with him and the brief return of Esmerelda to her mother. The sad finale involves the Archers’ fierce arrest of Esmerelda, her hanging and Quasimodo’s wretched misery a t the loss of the girl. There is some retribution for Frollo however, and the story, though not always following history very closely, presents a vivid picture of medieval Paris.As the saying goes that ,don’t judge a person from his appearance. Good and evil can never be distinguished by one’s surface. When confronted with the seamy side of pretty things, everyone’s heart would be struck. However, sometimes these things truly happen in our daily life. Life isn’t so bad as we thought and it also isn’t so good as we thought. Face the imperfect society and be true to yourself. This book actually is a novel in the background of The Notre Dame.The priest of The Notre Dame was attracted by a charming girl called Esmeralda, so he ordered his adopted son Quasimodo to rob this girl, but the girl saved by Phoebus and fell in love with Phoebus. Out of envy, the priest stabbed at Phoebus and make everybody think the girl is the killer. So Esmeralda was garroted, Quasimodo killed the priest and suicide around Esmeralda’s body.I like Quasimodo most in this novel, although Quasimodo has ugly appearance, he has a number of merits. First, he respect his life, he is a ugly man as well as a deaf man, most people have the same defect maybe choose to die, but he never gives up his life and lives a life full of enthusiasm to the bell in The Notre Dame. Second, he has totally loyalty to the priest, as we all know, he never disobeys the order of the priest, although the priest order Quasimodo to rob somebody or kill somebody. He still treats the priest as his father no matter what happens and how cruel the priest treats him. Third, his pure love to Esmeralda has moved me a lot. Maybe because a bowl of water that Esmeralda gave him, he was moved by Esmeralda’s kindness,because he is the one who has tried to rob Esmeralda. He loves Esmeralda no matter how Esmeralda treats him. He tries to do everything that make Esmeralda happy. When he realized his father is the one who want to Esmeralda die, he killed his father when he saw Esmeralda at the gallows. Even after the death of Esmeralda he chose to suicide around Esmeralda’s body.After reading this book, i have a deeper understanding to what is the real beauty, the real beauty depend on the beauty of heart instead of the beauty of appearance and also not the abundant of knowledge.Besides ,i think the kindness of Esmeralda has moved me a lot. She is a charming and beautiful girl but she still has a kind heart.She saved the life of Gringoire a totally strange man, even the cost is to get married with him. She has known that it is Quasimodo who robbed her in that street but she still gave Quasimodo a bowl of water when he extremely thirst and blamed people why they did not give water to Quasimodo. She has beautiful appearance and beautiful heart.I dislike this kind of people like Phoebus, he is a irresponsible man. He told Esmeralda that he loves her, but after the misunderstanding of Esmeralda, he refused to see Esmeralda just because he thought it is troublesome to solve this problem.When he hears from what his pre-mother in law said, he forgot Esmeralda totally and get married with another lady. In real life there are so many people like Phoebus, so it is important for us to tell apart the differences between responsible men and irresponsible men.As for the priest,Claude Frollo, i cannot tell apart my feeling about him.I think he is a kindhearted man,because he adopted Quasimodo even the reason to adopted him is for his young brother.When Quasimodo was whipped. He felt that he was the one to be whipped. He has abundant knowledge, he knows how to be a noble person, how totreat others,but what he has done totally different with what he thought.So he lives in a dilemma situation, he loves Esmeralda but he felt it is guilty to love a lady.He lived in a torturous life.He is a priest,he must obey the dogma,but he loves Esmeralda, he want to get rid of this kind of dilemma situation.Somehow, I have sympathy for him, maybe because i think he is a man lived in extremely anguish, a man struggled all the time in his mind. Maybe no one can understand his misery at that time, no one he can tell his dilemma situation with. Maybe this kind of struggle in his mind caused the kinky action he did. He ordered Quasimodo to rob Esmeralda, just because he want to possess her.He can take other way to get Esmeralda instead of robbing her to make Esmeralda loves himself, this crazy action may caused by his dilemma situation.He struggled a lot, as we can see, he engraved ANATKH on the wall, thinking the ANATKH all the time. We can see this struggle from what he has done to Esmeralda, he protected Esmeralda all the time, he worried about her safety, at the same time he what Esmeralda to die when he knew Esmeralda loves Phoebus rather than himself. He like a lunatic to want to possess Esmeralda.It is crazy and inscrutable of him when he delt with the matter about Esmeralda.I still cannot understand what he did to his young brother, as we all know, the priest loves his brother so much. the reason why he adopted Quasimodo is not only out of his kindness but also out of his love to his brother. He wants to his brother grown up happily and healthily and wants his brother can be somebody. He spoiled his brother a lot so that his brother grown up a naughty guy. But why he killed his brother indirectly in the end while he felt guilty to kill his brother.This matter has obsessed me all the time.Maybe someday i can find the reason why he killed his young brother.All in all, from this book i have thinking a lot.Maybe everyone is kind when we born, but why part of us become ugly in mind,part of us still kind in mind.The reason why may caused by our lust.Some people have beautiful appearance and beautiful heart, some people have beautiful heart rather than beautiful appearance.Some people has profound knowledge instead of profound mind and beautiful heart.So what kind of people we want to be is depend on not only the society and environment but also our heart.As for this book,i recommend you all to read it. For one thing, when you read it you will thinking a lot about what is the real beauty.For another,when you read this book you will search some information about The Notre Dame and Victor Hugo so that you can know more about the Notre Dame and Victor Hugo.But maybe it is difficult for us to understand because of too many new vocabulary.When i read this book, i did a lot of work on new vocabulary and read this book twice. I have watched the movie about The Notre Dame several times to help me understand this book more easily.So i recommend you all to read it when you are ready to deal with these difficulties when you read this book.。
