英语单词惯用法(44)

英语中有些形容词常作表语，习惯上后接介词in，构成：主语+ be +adj + in +...句型。下面就这些词的用法加以归纳，并配以练习进行巩固。 1、be absorbed in 一心一意的 例句：Will was so absorbed in reading that he went without his dinner. 威尔非常专心读书，以至于没有吃晚餐。 2、be accurate in 准确的 例句：The drawing of the house is accurate in every detail. 这房子的每个细节都画得很准确。 3、be active in 积极的 例句：From the start, he was active in drawing public attention to that political issue. 他从一开始就积极地使公众注意那个政治问题。 4、be advanced in 先进的；高级的 例句：He was advanced in years. 他年事已高。 5、be affluent in 丰富的 例句：Brazil is affluent in copper resources. 巴西铜矿资源很丰富。 6、be alone in独自的 例句：She is alone in believing that he is innocent. 只有她一个人相信他是无辜的。 7、be assiduous in勤勉的 例句：He was assiduous in performance of duty. 他勤勉地履行职责。 8、be backward in落后的,发展迟缓的 例句：Although he is clever, he is backward in giving his views. 他虽然很聪明，却不善发表他的意见。 9、be calm in沉着的 例句：She was so calm in front of so many people. 在这么多人面前，她显得那么冷静。 10、be concerned in 与…有关 例句：The Magi were likely concerned in its practice. 祭司很可能涉及到这场实践中。 11、be correct in 正确的 例句：The detective is completely correct in his surmises. 这个侦探所推测的完全正确。 12、be deficient in 不足的 例句：We are deficient in hands. 我们人手不够。 13、be disappointed in 对…失望 例句：Our Heavenly Father invented man because he was disappointed in the monkey. 我们的天公老爷，因对猴子失望而创造了人。 14、be disinterested in不感兴趣，公平的 例句：He was disinterested in food. 他对食物不感兴趣。 15、be dressed in穿着 The band were all dressed in green and red jackets. 乐队都穿着绿色和红色的夹克。 16、be employed in受雇于 Her days are employed in gardening and voluntary work. 她每天都从事园艺和志愿工作。 17、be engaged in 从事于; 由ａｎｄ连接两个英语单词构成的习惯用语是英语惯用法中的一　

种特殊类型。ａｎｄ前后两词语义相同、相近、相关或相反，共同表达　

一个整体概念。该结构具有用词精练，表达力强，生动形象之特点。　

ａｎｄ前后两词顺序固定，密不可分，但两者构词因素的内部关系有好　几种，在理解和运用中可能会造成困难。请看以下三个句子：

汉语中的“查字典”，说成英语通常是 look up sth in a dictionary 或 consult [refer to] a dictionary。如： I refer to the dictionary frequently. 我经常查阅词典。

You can look the word up in the dictionary. 你可以在词典里查这个词。

He often consulted a dictionary when he read the book. 他读这本书时经常查字典。

I looked the word up in the dictionary to refresh my memory of its exact meaning. 我查了词典，以便弄清这个词的准确意思。

I often look up the words I don’t know in the dictionary or on the Internet. 我经常在字典里或网上查找我不认识的单词。

“Is that the correct spelling?” “I don’t know—look it up in a dictionary.” “那是正确的拼写吗?”“我不知道——查查词典吧。”

I didn’t know what “loquacious” meant and had to look it up in a dictionary. 我不知道loquacious这个是什么意思，所以只好查了词典。

有不少人认为英语习惯上不能直接说 look up the dictionary, 其实这种表达在英语中也可以用，只是比较少见而已。例如：

something是英语中使用频繁的词汇之一，它的基本意义为“某事，某物”，比如，Would you like something to eat? 你想吃点什么吗啊？这里的动词不定式to eat是作定语，修饰something的，但要后置。

something可以用作代词，也可以用作副词，但在应用中却远远超出了这个意义，下面学习一下其常见的惯用法。

1.something用作代词，意思是“了不起，有道理，重要的事物”，比如，He thinks he is something.他认为他了不起。再如，There is

something in what you say.你所说的有些道理。再比如，He is

something in the department.他在部门颇有地位。

2．something用作副词时可以表示“有些、似乎”，比如，He

was something impatient.他有些不耐烦。He is something better

today.他今天好些了。 3．搭配or something的意思是“……之类的人，东西或情况”，表示对所陈述的对象不十分肯定，比如，He is the wool merchant or

something.他是个羊毛商之类的人。再比如，He is a teacher or

something.他大概是个当老师的。再比如，I hear he has broken an

1 《英语常用词惯用法》

◆a / an art.

英语不定冠词(a/an)的用法较复杂，以下几点须注意：

1. 用 a还是 an：一般说来，辅音或半元音[j, w]开头的词要前用a。如：

He has a computer (watch). 他有一台电脑(一块手表)。

He’s a university student (European). 他是大学生(欧洲人)。

元音开头的词前要用 an。如：

This is an egg (honest boy). 这是一只鸡蛋(诚实的男孩)。

注意，有的字母(如 a, e, f, h, i等)或缩略词，若第一个音是元音也应用an。如：

He missed an “n” in the word. 他写的这个单词漏了一个 n。

2. 不要从汉语习惯出发，漏掉必用的 a/an。如：

他父亲是著名诗人。

误：His father is famous poet.

正：His father is a famous poet.

3. 用于转化为普通名词的专有名词前，表示某某人或某某人的一部作品、艺术品等。如：

A Mr Smith wants to see you. 一位叫史密斯先生的人想见你。

He bought a complete Lu Hsun. 他买了一套鲁迅全集。

4. 用于转化为普通名词的物质名词前，表示相应的产品或种类，有时表示数量关系。如：

It’s a good wine. 这是(一种)好酒。

Two coffees and a tea, please. 请来两杯咖啡和一杯茶。

5. 用于具体化的抽象名词前，表示与该抽象名词意义相关的人或事等。如：

The party was a great success. 晚会开得非常成功。
