BEC中级口语第一讲Ⅰ Presentation ExamplePART 2: Mini-presentationA: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?Selecting applicants for a jobW orking experienceP ersonal qualitiesSample 1I choose topic A-what is important when selecting applicants for a job. As to this topic, as far as I am concerned, there are 3 things to consider.First, I think working experience is very important when selecting applicants. Applicants who have already had the work experience in the relevant fields will learn the new job easier and quicker. And it will also save the company a lot of training fees if the applicant has related experience.Second, we must consider the personal qualities of the applicants, such as personality and health. Companies tend to employ people whose character fits a special job. For example, consulting company tends to employ applicant who is analytical and knowledgeable, but advertising agents like their employees to be energetic and creative.Third, I believe language is of great importance when selecting applicants. Nowadays, we do business with people from all over the world. Always we buy goods from Africa, and sell our electronic product to Europe; a foreign language especially English is needed if the company wants to expand to the world. Applicants who can speak one or more foreign languages will have a better chance to get the job.Sample 2As we all know, the criteria used by HR professionals in screening and selecting applicants normally include such factors as working experience, personal qualities and communicative skills.Firstly, we pay a lot of attention to working experience of the applicant. A person with a solid record of related experience is more likely to fit in with a new company. Therefore he or she can be trusted to fulfill the tasks and solve the problems in a more professional and competent way.In addition to this, we also look at the personal qualities of the applicant. Does he or she has integrity, perseverance or ‘can do’spirit? Surely any organization can benefit from the reliability, devotion and enthusiam of its employees. Finally, good communicative skills such as interpersonal skills and team spirit are also becoming an important precondition in selecting qualified employees.B: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?Preparing for a job interviewS tudying the job advertisementFinding out about the companyBefore you go for an interview, you must make preparations so as to face the interviewer with more confidence. They include studying the job advertisement, finding out about the company, preparing yourself psychologically, etc.Firstly, you should study the job advertisement carefully so that you can match your knowledge, skills and abilities with the specifications required for the post. You must assure the interviewer that you have all the qualifications required, so you are the right sort of person they are looking for.Secondly, you should know more about the company, such as its profile, structure, existing problems, requirements, campaigns and future plans. As a Chinese saying goes: “know the opponent and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat.”Finally, you should also prepare yourself psychologically and this will help you combat stress. Rehearsing the interview with your friends, for example, is a good relaxation exercise that can install confidence in you.Ⅲ Presentation Discourse Management1.Opening SentenceWell, I’d like to make a short/brief/mini/one-minute presentation on the topic…2.Body (一般讲2-3个要点,根据语速和知识点调整)First,…Second….Third,…3.Closing SentenceAnyway, that’s why I think so.Thank you very much.Thank you for taking your time.Thank you for listening.第二讲Ⅰ ConversationPART 1: Exchange personal informationanswering questions, responding to a comment or participating in an exchange or greeting.Activity 1:Asking each other’s name (including spelling), hometown, occupation, hobbies*(必考)Further probing: describe your hometown (location, city, town, village) climate, population, etc.Further probing: describe your occupation/ or major (if student), likes and dislikes about your occupation.*Further probing: asking each other about marital status/ with or without boyfriend/girlfriend. When a new product is put into market, there may be very few people knowing/who know about it…(e.g.Thai curry source)Competitors’ price:a.Once a new product is put into market, it will immediately face the competitionfrom rivals. INTRODUCING A REWARD SYSTEM FOR STAFFPURPOSE OF THE REWARD SYSTEMTYPES OF REWARD OFFERED WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?AIMING TO REDUCE STAFF TURNOVERFINANCIAL INCENTIVESCAREER STRUCTUREKey points: Financial benefits; Career development/structure; reduce staff turnover Financial Benefits:a.Managers, company owners and supervisors have always been frustrated andbewildered by employees with little or no motivation.b.Staff always want reward for their contribution to the company and what theyare worth. Such factors are just like market forces. The fundamental reason of looking for a job is to get pay. Staff do the job what they are paid for. However, quite often, the staff work overtime under their managers’ demand. If the company fails to give proper financial benefits staff might subsequently feel not being fairly treated, and therefore frustrate their enthusiasm for their work.c.Staff want some sort of recognition for the job that they do. Correct financialbenefits plan will arouse their enthusiasm; otherwise they would feel being ignored.d.The job that the staff are doing is not always interesting, or the workingenvironment may not be pleasant, or their colleagues might not be very helpful and cooperative. In this kind of situation/under the kind of circumstance, the staff would become stressful and uninterested in their job. Correct financial benefits can normally distract staff from their dissatisfaction with….Career development/structure:a.Job-hunting is always a two-way process. On one hand, the employees look fortheir ideal jobs, on the other hand the employer, at the same time, look for competitive people. An employer has a number of methods to attract the best people into its business.Such as high pay, traveling opportunities, company cars and training/career development opportunities.b.Good educational background is not the only element that the future employerswill take into account when they look for someone in the job market. Postgraduate qualifications and professional trainings are equally or even more important than the higher education degrees. When the HR managers only have 30 seconds to go through each applicant’s CV, the sector that will catch their eyes are normally your qualification and professional training experiences, which show whether you suit their vacant positions.c.Nowadays, very few people would like to go for that kind of job-for-life posts. They all wish to have their jobs better and better. If an employee is able to get the opportunities to obtain some sort of professional training during the course of employment, this experience will definitely enhance his value in the employment market and therefore benefits his future job-hunting.d.So in the two-way job-seeking process, while the employer is choosing itsfavorite people, the wise future employee will consider the training and career development opportunities with his/her future employer and try to make himself/herself more competitive in the employment market.Ⅲ Business Dialogu e1) Negotiating a Job OfferEmployer: would you consider an offer of $56,000 per year?Ms. Wilson: What kind of benefits are talking about?Employer: Our standard package includes health insurance, two weeks vacation and a company car.Ms. Wilson: Are these things negotiable?Employer: Uh…not normally.
一些口语化的词组如“ic ing on the cake,sell like hotcakes,ballyhoo,shelf sitter”等也可以给会话增色。

It is the basis of the undergoing negotiation; we are sitting around the negotiation table because we need something from each other. It is our common desire to conclude the business. On the other hand, the success of the negotiation dependson the available budget. Without financial support, all the rounds of discussing and bargaining won’t make any sense. That is why it is an international practice to consider about the budget first and reasonable design of the contract comes after that.Besides the above mentioned points, long-term cooperation is also an essential element. Although the well-being of our own party is the main concern of us, we should insure that the prices we offered are very favorable, or we may even make some readjustment in our offer if the customer insists. The drive behind these behaviors is that sustainable profit and win-win outcome will make sure the contract can be held good for a long term. That is why we ought to make it our permanent principle to honor the contract and maintain commercial integrity.bec中级口语指导(2)WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Working as a teacherl Sharing expertisel Deciding responsibilitiesl【词汇&短语】求助于 resort to 零碎的piecemeal处理tackle with 前提premise倾向于apt to 灵活的策略flexible policy指派assign 唤起情绪invoke有机的,整体的organic 同时simultaneously【句型点击】The prim e concern is… 首要考虑是..Given this premise…. 基于这样的前提Be expected to…【参考范例】When working as a teacher, the prime concern is sharing expertise. The need of the students should receive careful consideration. Through systematic training and teaching, the students should be able to resort to the professional skill of the teacher for reasonable solution of whatever problem they may come across in working experience.Secondly, the teacher is expected to decide the responsibility of his/her fellowman. In this case, it is better to tackle with the whole thing in an organic way rather than a piece meal basis. In other words, the person on the teaching position should be crystal clear of the strength and weakness of every student and assign them to the right positions based on this judgment. Given this premise, the whole team can work in an efficient way.Another crucial issue is how to monitor the students. Here we should adopt a flexible policy. It takes wisdom to let the students know that their behavior will be noticed b the supervisor and simultaneously to invoke the creative spirit out of them. In this way, we can improve the behavior pattern of the students and make full of their potentialities.bec中级口语指导(3)WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Considering setting a staff canteenl Employee’s opinionsl Cost to the companyl【词汇&短语】至关重要的crucial 策略战术tactic能被利用的available 注意be aware of….交换意见compare notes 或者alternatively长期预定long-tern reservation 可行性feasibility以员工为中心的employee-oriented 建筑,建造construction 【句型点击】As far as…..c oncernedWith respect to….关于….To be specific 具体来说Be supposed to….Conserve no effort to…【参考范例】With respect to setting up staff canteens, I suggest that we should be aware of the following four factors. To start with, employees’ opinions are supposed to play a crucial role. Undoubtedly, we should conserve no effort to meet the needs of the employees. We can benefit a lot from this employee-oriented tactic. To be specific, we can compare notes with employees from different departments, or, alternatively, we can make them vote for a decision.Secondly, the cost of the company deserves to be taken into consideration. If there can be other more economic options, why bother to build an extra canteen? I mean, if the company can make a long term reservation with a restaurant probably, it saves time and money.Thirdly, the financial situation tends to interfere in the decision making. If building a canteen is a better choice compared with ordering foods from restaurants in the long run, we still have to consider the expenses in building the canteen--------an undergoing construction is a big deal for the company anyway. Lastly, the location of the canteen is also quite important. If you want to build a canteen, there should be space available for it.bec中级口语指导(4)WH AT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Managing changeClear objectivesCommunication【词汇&短语】企业目标 business goal 蓝图 blueprint核心竞争力core competence 与时俱进keep pace with time 大的市场份额The lion’s share【参考范例】In this information age, the capacity to manage change is becoming increasingly important. Consequently, more and more managers begin to put this issue in the spotlight. In my perspective, when managing change, several factors should be taken into consideration. The first one is to set a clear objective, because it is the blueprint of a company’s future development. Without the guide of a clear objective, one will get lost in the business jungle. The second factor is communication skill. An effective communication can promote cooperation, and communication is usually considered as an inevitable way to effective management. The third one is technology and qualified personnel. They are the core competitiveness of the enterprises and they are the software and hardware that drive the enterprise to work in a full speed. Without them, it is hard to keep pace with the time. It contains more than just a wonderful meal, a sightseeing tour or a shopping trip. Good hospitality events can impress clients in a unique manner in and outside of the office. When entertaining clients, we should decide the types of activities according to their interest and favorites. Moreover, these activities should help us achieve our business objectives, for example, we canhave an intimate discussion about business with our clients during a meal in a cozy compartment where both where both sides tend to be more relaxed. In addition, we have to mix business with pleasure effectively so our clients won’t feel that we are too purposeful.Cost is anther important factor when designing activities for clients. Higher expenses don’t necessarily to greater satisfaction, and in some cases, the clients will be overwhelmed with our kindness. Therefore, when entertaining clients, sincerity appears to be more important, upon which a long and a steady business relationship is based.Topic B: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Choosing retail premises to rent●Location●Length of contract【词汇&短语】房东landlord 利润空间profit margin租户tenant 房屋结构building structure可持续发展sustainable development 合同到期exploration of contract繁荣boom prosperity 续签合同renew the contract租金rent 押金deposit【句型点击】●观点阐述Well, it seems to me that…….That’s true, but on the other hand…..●追加观点That’s just what/all I was thinking…..Well, the point I’m trying to make it that……Another thing I want to mention is……【参考范例】When aiming to choose retail premises, you should always put the location on the top of your list. An ideal retail premises should be situated in the downtown district or a big residential area where the sources of the customers is guaranteed, in China, A lot of businessman believe in Fengshui and they think a good location is vital to the success of business.Besides, the length of contract is also an important factor in choosing retail premises because the retailer need time to develop market and customers. A steady and uninterrupted business environment is most desired, and a long-term contract will ensure the retailer’s sustainable development. What’s more, rent and means of payment should never be overlooked, retailers in general have a big cash flow, therefore, a reasonable rent and flexible means of payment are good for their capital turnover. A cooperative landlord is preferred and necessary for a win-win situation.Topic C: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Deciding on packaging for products●Image●Production process【词汇&短语】包装材料wrapper, packaging material 不可再生资源non-renewableresources 包装设计package design 有利环境的environmental-friendly顾客的青睐customer favor 肤浅的,表明的superficial【句型点击】●自然过渡How shall I put it? 怎么说呢?Actually…..That’s just how I see it …..●个人观点Personally, I think…..Frankly, I think….【参考范例】Packing of products concerns the fate of products because it arouses people’s desire for purchase. When deciding on packaging for products, we should take several things into consideration.First of all, the image catches the eye of potential customers, people are sometimes skin deep when surrounded by a variety of products, their decisions are simply based upon the packaging, therefore a thoughtful design in color, shape and packaging materials is crucial in winning customer’s favor. On the other hand, the cost of packaging should be carefully dealt with because it is contained in the prices of the products. Increased price will make the products less competitive in a buyer’s market. After all, in comparison with packaging, people are more sensitive to price.Last but not least, our resources are limited and some are even non-renewable. Once the products are opened up, the wrapper are useless, so it is expected that designers can develop further uses of packaging materials or at least make them environmental-friendly.Test 2Topic A: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Selecting staff for promotion●Attitude to work●Current performance【词汇&短语】空缺职位vacancy 人事部personnel行政管理部administration 公关public relations总部head office 工资wages and salaries管理技能managerial skill 职业前景career prospect人力资源部human resources 团队协作teamwork【句型点击】●常用开始语Thank you for your questionThe answer is…Let me start with….In my viewIt is very likely that….●表达观点常用句What I am thinking is….Let me make my point very clear. It is crystal clear that…..There is no doubt that…..I am into the first opinion..【句型点击】When selecting staff for promotion, several factors should be taken into consideration, to begin with, the attitude to the work is one of the most fundamental elements. I believe attitude is everything. It is not uncommon to find workers who have great talents but are reluctant to make full contribution in their position, the point is, you have to love what you are doing and you have to try your utmost and reserve no effort to do it.Secondly, current performance is also very important, because it is obvious that attitude and effort have to be measured in a certain way so that you can know everyone’s capability.Thirdly, you can’t ignore career potential and adaptability, almost in every company, we can find employees who are excellent individuals but fail to cooperate in a team, these elements are all very essential in one’scareer. Career Development: how to fill a key vacancyWhen it comes to filling a key vacancy, a company will usually follow the same standard procedure. (开题)It will begin by producing an accurate job description of what it would like the successful candidate to do. (要点1,关键词job description)From this, it can then produce a pro this ideal candidate, which is a list of skills, experience, attributes and so on. (发展1,解释)Having produced this profile, the company must then decide on the best recruitment method to capture a candidate with this profile. (要点2,关键词recruitment method)This might be an internal advertisement or an external advertisement in a newspaper, on the Internet say, even an agency or perhaps a headhunter. (发展2,例子)Having decided on the best recruitment method, the advertisements are then placed or the headhunter contacted and a list of candidates will be then drawn up to be put through the company’s recruitment processes. (要点3,关键词recruitment processes)This might be interviews, psychometric tests or even hand-writing analysis. (发展3,例子)This will then produce the ideal candidate for the company. The company will then have to negotiate terms with this candidate (要点4,关键词negotiate terms)and, hopefully, this will result in terms which are both affordable for the company and attractive enough to get the candidate they want. (发展4,解释)Even though different companies vary somewhat in their efforts to fill open posts, the steps mentioned above are very much the norm rather than the exception in any industry. (结论)B. III-11. Recruitment: the importance of having a good CVWell, in my opinion, you should never underestimate the importance of having a good CV. (开题)To begin with, in the majority of cases, your CV is the employer’s first impression of you. (要点1,关键词first impression)Your first chance to impress your potential employer, let’s say. (发展1,解释)As you should remember to your advantage, you’ve got only 30 seconds to leave a positive impression on someone, whether he is a customer or a potential employer. (发展1,解释)But more than that, your CV also showcases your essential skills in order to compete in today’s job mar ket. (要点2,关键词skills)In other words, it provides an illustration of your skills to organize, summarize, prioritize and present informationeffectively, say, as well as your linguistic and communicative abilities. (发展2,解释)But above all, a CV, by its very nature, also indicates how your qualification and experience match your employer’s requirements. (要点3,关键词qualification and experience)In this way, your prospective boss will be able to reach a sound decision on your suitability for the position. (发展3,解释)Even though employers these days use a variety of selection techniques, such as analyzing your handwriting or psychometric tests, a good CV is still the single most important part of any application. (结论)C. II-13. What is important when choosing a new supplier? Prices and discounts, ReputationWell, when it comes to choosing a new supplier, several vital factors must be taken into account. To begin with, I think we must consider the price of goods first. We can compare the prices offered by different suppliers and choose the one which is more reasonable. Because only if we get the supply at lower price can we make profits. Of course, it would be even better if the supplier can offer discounts to regular clients.Another point we should also consider is the location of the supplier. We’d better choose one who is not too far away from us. If the supplier is too far away, that will most likely increase the cost of transportation.Besides, it’s also very important to consider whether the supplier is reli able. We would never choose those who always deliver their goods late or those who can’t ensure the quality of goods. Because late delivery may bring heavy loss to us, and quality is the lifeline of any business. Otherwise we may lose our own clients. So in this aspect, we must not make any concessions, and lower prices cannot be a valid mitigating factor. While there are also other considerations in choosing a supplier, such as reputation, means of payment, after-sales service, I believe the factors mentioned above are the most indispensable ones.D. II-36. What is important when choosing business premises to rent? Location, Length of contractWell, as we all know, many factors must be considered when choosing business premises to rent, the questions is of course – which ones? From my point of view, we should first take the location into consideration. Some companies choose to locate in office blocks downtown; some would like to be near the largest concentrations of their target customers. It depends largely upon the type of the company in question. Companies that provide services must be located within easy access. So they usually choose those places where there is convenient transportation.Another important facet to consider is the size of the premises. Nowadays, more and more large companies prefer an open, spacious working floor which allows colleagues to communicate and interact freely. Of course, a small company would not rent the whole floor. That will be awaste of space and an unnecessary cost burden.Last but not least, the length of contract should not be neglected. A fixed-term contract is legally binding and can only serve to make your situation worse in times of recession. Whenever possible, flexible contract arrangement should be preferred. While there are also other considerations in choosing business premises, such as rent and facilities, I believe the factors mentioned above are the most indispensable ones.E. III-7. Career Development: The importance of acquiring a range of skills throughout your careerWell, as is known to all, it is very important for a person to acquire a range of skills in the course of his career. The question is of course – why? When he has a range of skills, first of all, he is obviously more competitive than those who don’t and therefore has better chances of surviving a downturn. To put it another way, companies are likely to retain highly skilled staff members even when mass layoff is inevitable. And that’s not the only benefit. A person with a range o f skills is more likely to work his way to the top of the corporate ladder. In most companies, whether or not you have the appropriate skills is a relevant criterion for promotion. On the other hand, it will also be easier for a skilled employee to find a job outside his own company if he is not satisfied with his present job. In this way, acquiring a variety of skills in one’s career offers more professional mobility. So, when all the benefits are taken into account, no wonder acquisition of skills is taken so seriously nowadays.F. III-8. Career Planning: how to assess the career opportunities provided by different types of companiesWell, when it comes to assessing different career opportunities, several vital factors must be taken into account.First of all, the type of company should be taken into consideration. Different types of firms have their own benefits and challenges. In a multinational company., say, you can learn international business management and culture, and as an icing on the cake, you may have more opportunities to travel abroad. However, English is the working language in multinationals. You have to be very good at English to work there. So state-owned companies may better suit some people.Salary should be another important consideration. As everyone knows, multinational companies usually offer higher salaries. But if you have just graduated from college, you shouldn’t be too concerned about that. As a new hand, it’s more important to gain more experience through working rather than earn quick money. After salary, we should not ignore other financial rewards in the form of fringe benefits. Some companies offer housing allowance, car allowance, children’seducation allowance in addition to salaries. Still others provide staff with free health club and cafeteria. And high tech firms often supplement salaries with stock options.Although there are also other considerations in assessing different career opportunities, such as training, location, and good colleagues, I believe the factors mentioned above are the most indispensable ones.G. III-31. Human Resources: how to select the right staff for promotionWell, as is known to all, it is very important to select the right staff for promotion. The question is of course – how?For one thing, qualification definitely counts a great deal. A good qualification, especially an advanced degree, normally indicates high aptitude and a wide range of knowledge and skills. Even though we often hear clichés like ‘But degrees don’t mean everything’, in the real world, qualification actually means a lot. That said, there ARE certain skills and knowledge, or what we call flair, that come only from long-time hands-on experience. So it is only natural that the next thing to consider should be experience. Only by accumulating enough experience can an employee be totally at ease with his duties. Besides, experience can also tell us about his performance, track record, and leadership potential.Well, last but not least, personality should also be a factor in any staffing decision. Different positions require different personal qualities. The highest virtues for an engineer engaged in R & D, for instance, would be meticulousness and creativity. Yet for a sales manager, being energetic and outgoing is much more important because sales managers have to leave a good first impression upon their clients. But for any position, hard-working people are always welcome. So to recap, qualification, experience and personality are the three promotion criteria that we all need to keep in mind.H. III-62. Product Promotion: how to promote an imported brandWith so many people these days making a conscious decision to buy domestic products, the pressure on those companies wishing to promote imported brands is greater than ever before.Initially, a company needs to show how their product is superior to the local equivalents. Maybe it’s better quality; maybe it’s more stylish; maybe it’s better image. Anyway, a company needs to show customers the benefits of being more adventurous in their buying decisions, in order to encourage them to move away from the home brands they currently use.Well, beyond that, if you market a product as something exotic or unusual, say, you’re bound to attract new clients. As you may also have experienced, most people have a strong craving for things novel and unfamiliar. Of course, when the sense ofcuriosity wears off, such a strategy will usually fall short of expectations.Last but not least, cultural stereotypes are also a powerful selling tool. A cosmetics range associated with French chic, for example, is sure to attract customers. And if people are looking to buy a reliable car, there’s no better label than ‘made in Germany’. These national associations can also be exploited at the point of sale. Playing French music in supermarkets, for example, is proven to improve the sales of French wine. All in all, if you want to successfully promote an imported brand, you need to give your customers a good reason to try something a little bit more exciting than their own home brands.I. III-70. Advertising: the importance of stereotypes in advertisingWell, I’m very much convinced that you should never underestimate the importance of stereotypes in advertising.First of all, a stereotype is something enduring and easily identifiable to a whole national group. When an Asian audience see Eiffel Tower in an ad, they instantly conjure up the romantic image of Paris at night. And with that in mind, any product associated with French chic, say, cosmetics, perfume, and fashion, will become an easy sell. As another example, the German Audi designers in white lab coats are obviously obsessed with perfection. And so we can guarantee that any product we buy from them is going to be designed to perfection the moment we see this ad.What’s more, stereotypes can make us feel good about our own value systems or customs. An ad targeted at a British audience might pit a refined Londoner against a brash New Yorker and that’ll give the impression that the product we’re selling is obviously full of taste and discretion. And in this way, stereotypes reinforce the positive qualities in the minds of the viewers. And lastly, stereotypes make good comedy because everybody wants to laugh at other countries and people who are different. A fictitious aboriginal tribe once served as the backdrop for a celebrated cell phone ad. The contrast between the modern and the primitive kept the audience in stitches. And of course, if they’ve had a laugh, they’r e more likely to remember the advert. So to sum up, stereotypes are useful to advertisers because they’re basically a shorthand. You’ve got thirty seconds to get your main selling point across. And with a stereotype you can do that in two.J. III-84. Marketing: the importance of packaging products appropriately In recent years, numerous factors have made packaging an important marketing tool.Increased competition and clutter on retail store shelves means that packages now must perform many sales tasks -- from attracting attention, to describing the product, to making the sale. Among these, the first one is undoubtedly the most crucial function. Companies are realizing the power of good packaging to create instant consumer recognition of the company or brand. Nowadays, in an average supermarket, which stocks 15,000 to 17,000 items, the typical shopperpasses by some 300 items per minute, and 53 percent of all purchases are made on impulse. In this highly competitive environment, the package may be th e seller’s last chance to influence buyers. It becomes a “five-second commercial”. The renowned Campbell Soup Company, say, estimates that the average shopper sees its familiar red and white can 76 times a year, creating the equivalent of $26 million worth of advertising. However, everyone’s favorite success story on packaging involves the ubiquitous red Coke can. Marketers everywhere have emulated but rarely equaled the marketing power of its simple design. More recently, the picture of a smiling Tiger Woods, the golf guru, appears on the boxes of a certain brand of cereals, apparently to convey an image of fitness, energy, and vitality. The effort has not been wasted – its sales tripled in one year.In brief, while good packaging can serve many practical purposes, it is with its utility in effective product promotion that marketers are primarily concerned.K. III-87. Customer Relations: how to maintain customer interest in a company’s products Well, as is known to all, it is very important for a company to maintain customer interest in their products. The question is of course – how?I think there are several ways to do that. For one thing, we should always make sure that we provide our customers with quality goods and quality after-sales service, as these two aspects are indisputably the lifeline of any business. Continuous new product development and innovation in service are also necessary in reinforcing and expanding customer base.Apart from that, enough emphasis should be laid on the feedback from our customers. If necessary, prompt action should be taken to take care of their needs and demands. Finally, if possible we should provide some incentives to repeat customers. For example, we can grant a certain rebate to them if their purchases reach a certain amount. And offering coupons and free delivery to customers are also effective and feasible methods. All in all, we should try our utmost to keep our customers satisfied and fulfill their expectations. Only by doing so can we maintain clients’ interest in our products.L. III-113. Production Development: the importance of R & D to a company To illustrate the importance of research and development to some firms, the level of annual investment in research and development by the top ten listed corporations in the States can serve as a telling indicator: each of these firms typically spends more than $1 billion on research and development per year. The question is, why?First of all, firms invest funds in research and development primarily in order to design new products. For instance, Procter and Gamble’s R & D resulted in its two-in-one shampoo and conditioner technology. This new technology has been used in its famous Pantene, Head & Shoulders products, which now enjoy a significantmarket share in various countries. On the other hand, companies also use R & D to improve the products they already produce. Again, Procter and Gamble has improved the technology of Tide detergent more than seventy times. And not surprisingly, Tide is now the leading detergent in North America. What’s more, R & D can allow one firm a huge competitive advantage and therefore improve revenue streams dramatically. For example, Pfizer, one of the pharmaceutical titans, has successfully obtained patents for such best selling drugs as Benadryl, Listerine and Viagra. In other words, Pfizer now has the monopoly in these lucrative drugs. This ‘license to print money’ comes directly from Pfizer’s R & D activities. In short, firms that spend money on R & D have found to their delight that the benefits almost always exceed the expenses.M. III-130. Health and Safety: the importance of a safe working environment for maintaining staff moraleFirms that create a safe working environment not only prevent injuries but improve the morale of their employees as well. I feel strongly that this is something indispensable for any company.First of all, a safe working environment offers peace of mind to staff members and therefore can significantly motivate staff to enhance a firm’s prod uctivity. As a result, many leading firms, such as Intel and GE, now identify workplace safety as one of their main goals. Not surprisingly, these are some of the best performing firms anywhere in the world. What’s more, a safe environment can reduce the occurrence of workplace accidents, which are usually a source of staff dissatisfaction and low trust in the management. Taking safety measures can enhance staff loyalty and, in turn, moral. For instance, Levi Strauss and Co. imposes safety guidelines not only in its US facilities but also in Asian factories where some of its clothes are made. Starbucks, meanwhile, has developed a code of conduct in an attempt to improve the quality of life in coffee-producing countries, in an effort to buck against sweatshop-like working conditions. These two companies have been rated highly by their employees. In short, if you want to boost morale among your staff, or to put it in plain words, if you want to see enthusiasm, confidence, or loyalty in your workforce, then safety should have your prior attention.N. III-137. International Business: the importance of a global presence for a company With more mergers and acquisitions than ever before, I think it’s becoming quite clear that a company in the future will need to have a global presence in order to compete in tomorrow’s market place. This presence can give a company many competitive advantages. To begin with, say, it can give access to local market knowledge, which can help avoid some very, very expensive mistakes on account of cultural conflicts. The Matsushita Firm of Japan learned this at a price, when they, without knowing the negative connotations of the word in the US, first launched their products under the brand name of “National’. Only when they switched to ‘Panasonic’ did the flat sale become brisk. On top of that, a global presence can spread the risk of doing business. As the saying goes: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If a company sells to more than one market, it can survive a downturn in any one of those markets, that’s something for sure. And if a company becomes truly global, the size of the company means it can realize economies of scale, say, in advertising or distribution or shipping. It can also move its production from country to country and take advantage of the best conditions at any given time.So I think, all in all, when these things are taken into consideration, it’s quite clear that any company not looking to establish a global presence in the future may not have a future at all.O. III-138. Business Ethics: how to encourage ethical behaviour from employees Figures show that more and more companies are now reporting their ethical performance and it’s clear, I think, that companies now have to address the issue of ensuring ethical behaviour amongst their staff. The question is of course – how?To begin with, awareness is key. And in order to promote awareness for ethics, the company needs to put ethics high on the training and staff development agenda. The HR department, say, can sponsor some workshops or seminars on business ethics, or even invite some external experts for this purpose.Once these procedures are in place, the company then needs to spell out an official code of ethical practice and ensure that all employees have access to it and can understand it easily. The company then needs to implement an effective and anonymous system of reporting any breaches of this code. Some companies even benchmark their ethical practices against those of industry leaders and see how they’re doing.I suppose it’s also vital that companies ensure that their senior managers set a good example, ‘walk and talk’ so to speak. If they don’t behave ethically why should staff? All in all, whatever measures a company adopts, it needs to make staff understand why ethics is important not just to the company but also to themselves as well.* * * *。

BEC中级口语第二部分素材★★★In developing new products, I think market research is very important. By carrying out market research, a company can get such information as whether there exists a niche market for a new product, and what are customers'needs and tastes for the new product, therefore, the new product will sell well when it is launched into market.Next, I think costs are also important. A product's cost determines the product's price. Other costs like for marketing, advertising and managing will also be involved in. So cutting down the unnessary costs is a crucial step. Finally, screening is also a significant factor, because it separates ideas with potential from those that cannot meet company objectives. Poor screening may lead to product failure.★★★When planning health and safety training for employees, it is important to select the right and related topics. Take chemical training as an example, relevant and important topics should be included, such as the methods used to detect the presence or release of hazardous chemicals, the physical and health problems posed by hazardous chemicals, and the ways by which employees can protect themselves from chemical dangers and so on. High topics achieve purposes. In addition to selecting topics, selecting related staff to attend is also important. If it can serve for target people and meet certain requests, the company can achieve the training purpose.Besides, the length of training and opportunity for re-training can be important as well because safety and health knowledge needs to be emphasized and reinforced from time to time, and lengthy training can be boring and have negative effects on trainees.★★★In cost management, efficiency of production is an important aspect to consider. When introducing a production line, it is important to consult an ergonomics expert and see that it's user-friendly and will not cause too much physical stress and strain. Meanwhile, workers should get fully-trained to work more efficiently on the line.It is also important to cut down the cost of raw materials, as to a large extent, it helps to determine the product prices. Cost-conscious companies always seek to work withgood suppliers who can offer quality raw materials with reasonable prices. Low quality materials from suppliers are actually a waste of money.Measures should also be taken to eliminate waste. On top of that, management should develop good benefits system to boost the morale of the workers.★★★When organizing work time, time management skills are important. They are essential skills for effective people. Having clear objectives would help you concentrate on the right things which are important and urgent. In addition, keeping a diary would remind you of all essential tasks to be finished. It's a powerful method of organizing yourself and a way of reducing stress. Thus you can tackle problems in order of importance, which allows you to separate important jobs from the many time-consuming trivial ones.Apart from the two points I have mentioned, it's also important to get cooperation from those around you. Let your colleagues, spouse, family members, and others know about your efforts to manage a busy schedule, and thus you can be free from interruption.★★★In deciding packaging for a product, it's important to choose the colour, texture and design that provide the best image or appearance of the product. A firm can create desirable appearance by designing a package that conveys signals of taste and food content. Many manufactures have upgraded the packaging of their food product to convey high-quality images.Next, I think the health and safety is especially important for food product. When designing the package, we should not only put emphasis on color, size, even graphics, but also the materials of the package whether it is environmentally friendly or not and whether it will contaminate the food inside or not. Finally, I think offering consumers convenience is also important. Packaging should be designed in such as way to make it easier for consumers to open the container and enjoy the product.★★★When aiming to improve customer service, it is very important for a company to train the staff first. By inviting some experts to train the staff, it will improve staff's friendliness, the speed of service and learn to deal with customer complaints. It is also important for a company to monitor the quality service. One way of monitoring the quality of service is to conduct customer satisfication surveys. Byobtaining feedback from customers, the company will know how the business has met customer expectations.Another way to improve customer service is to offer timely service. We must provide the product precisely when it is promised and in the minimum amount of time.★★★When entertaining foreign business clients, we need, first of all, to decide on the most suitable venue for the event to take place. We had better find out in our first contact with our foreign clients if they are more of art lovers or sports fans or gourmets, and then choose the type of entertainment: whether it should be in a restaurant or in the theatre or in some other appropriate venue for the event. But all I mentioned above must base on the consideration of cultural differences. When interacting with foreign business people, problems may arise in different thought patterns, different ways of seeing the world, and different ways of decision-making. These problems are the result of cultural differences and will often lead to misunderstanding. The other important aspect for us is to have a clear plan in mind when we come to the meeting. We need to work out a list of specific business objectives to achieve. Therefore while making sure our foreign business clients enjoy themselves, we quietly and smoothly direct the meeting step by step towards our goal.。
BEC中级口语第一讲ⅠPresentation ExamplePART 2:Mini—presentationA: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?Selecting applicants for a job•Working experience•Personal qualitiesSample 1I choose topic A—what is important when selecting applicants for a job. As to this topic,as far as I am concerned, there are 3 things to consider。
First, I think working experience is very important when selecting applicants。
Applicants who have already had the work experience in the relevant fields will learn the new job easier and quicker. And it will also save the company a lot of training fees if the applicant has related experience.Second,we must consider the personal qualities of the applicants, such as personality and health。
Companies tend to employ people whose character fits a special job。
For example, consulting company tends to employ applicant who is analytical and knowledgeable, but advertising agents like their employees to be energetic and creative。

BEC中级口语第三部分素材这里为大家提供一些BEC口语第三部分的素材,希望大家认真学习,看看他们是怎么样展开话题的.Task 1A: Well, you see, our company is going to attend a trade fair in the US.B: Yeah, sounds exciting. Since we’ve never done that before, we need to have good advance preparations for the trip.A: You’re right. The first thing to do is of course to make travel and accommodation arrangements, such as choosing an airline offering good services and the flight of the right time so that we can arrange things well and in an effective way.B: This can be done by making several phone calls. And we have to make advance reservation with a local hotel so that the people for the trade fair can have a place to stay immediately after they arrive in the country.A: With early booking, we may even en joy some discounts. And it’s better to choose a hotel near the trade fair. That can save the time traveling there.B: Or we can arrange beforehand to hire a car from a local car rental company.A: In addition, it would be useful to know about some business customs in the US, including commonly accepted business practices, ways of doing business, and laws and regulations, etc.B: Yeah, especially those different from ours. Say, different ideas about punctuality. I heard that in the United States, people tend to be very time-conscious. Being late would be considered poor etiquette.A: Also in China, business transactions are often concluded by treating business partners to lavish dinners and giving them expensive gifts, I’m afraid they seldom do it this way in the West or in the US.B: I was told that in Western countries, people attach much importance to formal agreement and contracts with detailed terms and conditions. They never feel comfortable with verbal agreements. In China, however, business is often concluded simply by verbal agreement.A: We should also learn about business customs such as the different systems of measurement. For instance, we use the day/ month/ year system for dating while the US use month/ day/ year system. And there are many other differences including topics acceptable in conversation.B: Also, Chinese businessmen tend to have business negotiations in a rather indirect manner, while American businessmen have a more direct style. Our people should be made to understand all these differences.A: But how to find out about all this?B: I think there are many ways to find out about these before the trip, say, we can go to the Internet, read some reference books or get tips from experienced colleagues and clients.A: They could be effective ways. Let’s do them.Task 2A: You see, in the past year one of our clients kept losing staff and suffered a heavy loss. They worry a lot and turn to us. Have you got any constructive suggestions?B: Yes. Our client should first examine their staff recruiting. There must be something wrong with their recruiting practice.A: Why?B: You know, keeping staff turnover low begins with hiring staff members who are a good match for the practice and the position. So it can be beneficial for the client company to change its idea from “attracting and retaining the best employees” to “attracting and recruiting the suitable employees.”A: Good idea! By recruiting the appropriate new staff, our client builds the employees’ commitment and retention wi ll necessarily follow.B: Exactly.A: Then how to recruit the right staff is crucial to our client.B: Yes. To recruit the appropriate new hires, it’s important to advertise the job vacancy in the newspapers and magazines targeting at the ideal candidates.A: To ensure that a candidate’s skills match the job, it’s also important to limit the conditions and requirements of candidates on the job advertisement.B: Yes. Besides, it’s better for our client to conduct thorough reference checks and find out why a candidate left a previous job.A: Yeah, that’s important. Still there are other contributable factors that our client should consider, such as providing information of the current state of their future work environment, offering staff with proper training, talking to staff members and solving problems as they emerge. All these can be important in keeping staff turnover low.B: You are right. Furthermore, the client company should strive to provide superior leadership in their practice, such as keeping communication lines open, periodically taking time to examine the workplace from the employee’s perspective, and continually seeking to improve it.A: Yeah, that will help to create and maintain a place where people want to work and stay. In addition, giving the employees a sense of empowerment should not be ignored.B: For example?A: Such as providing a breathing space to take risks, to use their own best judgment, and to be accountable for the decisions they’ve made etc.B: Yeah, that surely works.Task 3A: Our guests are arriving at weekend for a three day visit, so let’s look at our arrangement of activities for our guests. Now, first of all, what items do you think should be included here?B: Well, as we know, they are here to investigate a possible long-term cooperation with us. So, the first thing Monday morning is to take them for a tour around our company. We should show them the best part of our company, particularly the office computer management system.A: Yes. But perhaps we should first give them a chance to see the video profile of our company before showing them around and that would give them a better idea of our unique way of operating our business.B: That’s great. I totally agree with you on that. What are we going to arrange for Monday evening? Theatre, concert, or restaurant?A: Oh, well. From the information we have gathered, they are people of very well cultured background, how about giving them some taste of Peking Opera at the Capital Theatre?B: I do not disagree, but I am afraid it shouldn’t be too long for that. There are other things I would want to bring to our attention. I mean we need to take cultural differences into consideration. I don’t think we can expect them to sit out a two hours performance that they understand practically little.A: Maybe we can arrange for half an hour of Peking opera before we take them for a late night dinner.B: Alright. That’s settled. But where do you think we should take them to for the meal?A: We should choose one of the best restaurants along the busiest street in this city where they could experience the hustle and bustle of this city.B: But there’s something else that I want to note here. I think the British are generally rather reserved people. I am afraid they would prefer not to have a too noisy and busy place for dinner.A: That’s a good point. In this case, we should book a room in a quite distinctive restaurant where we could have more privacy and at the same time enjoy the local food.B: If there is no further question, let’s get down to our preparation right now.。

Cost-conscious companies always seek to work with good suppliers who can offer quality raw materials with reasonable prices. Low quality materials from suppliers are actually a waste of money.Measures should also be taken to eliminate waste. On top of that, management should develop good benefits system to boost the morale of the workers. ★★★When organizing work time, time management skills are important. Let your colleagues, spouse, family members, and others know about your efforts to manage a busy schedule, and thus you can be free from interruption.★★★In deciding packaging for a product, it's important to choose the colour, texture and design that provide the best image or appearance of the product.A firm can create desirable appearance by designing a package that conveys signals of taste and food content. Many manufactures have upgraded the packaging of their food product to convey high-quality images. Next, I think the health and safety is especially important for food product. One way of monitoring the quality of service is to conduct customer satisfication surveys.By obtaining feedback from customers, the companywill know how the business has met customer expectations.Another way to improve customer service is to offer timely service. Therefore while making sure our foreign business clients enjoy themselves, we quietly and smoothly direct the meeting step by step towards our goal.BEC中级口语第三部分素材Task 1A: Well, you see, our company is going to attend a trade fair in the US.B: Yeah, sounds exciting. Since we’ve never done that before, we need to have good advance preparations for the trip.A: You’re right. The first thing to do is of course to make travel and accommodation arrangements, such as choosing an airline offering good services and the flight of the right time so that we can arrange things well and in an effective way. B: This can be done by making several phone calls. And we have to make advance reservation with a local hotel so that the people for the trade fair can have a place to stay immediately after they arrive in the country.A: With early booking, we may even enjoy some discounts. And it’s better to choose a ho tel near the trade fair. Therefore while making sure our foreign business clients enjoy themselves, we quietly and smoothly direct the meeting step by step towards our goal.BEC中级口语第三部分素材Task 1A: Well, you see, our company is going to attend a trade fair in the US.B:Yeah, sounds exciting. Since we’ve never done that before, we need to have good advance preparations for the trip.A: You’re right. The first thing to do is o f course to make travel and accommodation arrangements, such as choosing an airline offering good services and the flight of the right time so that we can arrange things well and in an effective way.B: This can be done by making several phone calls. And we have to make advance reservation with a local hotel so that the people for the trade fair can have a place to stay immediately after they arrive in the country.A: With early booking, we may even enjoy some discounts. Say, different ideas about punctuality.I heard that in the United States, people tend to be very time-conscious. Being late would be considered poor etiquette.A:Also in China, business transactions are often concluded by treating business partners to lavish dinners and giving them expensive gifts, I’m afraid they seldom do it this way in the West or in the US.B: I was told that in Western countries, people attach much importance to formal agreement and contracts with detailed terms and conditions. Have you got any constructive suggestions? B: Yes. Our client should first examine their staff recruiting. There must be something wrong with their recruiting practice.A: Why?B: You know, keeping staff turnover low begins with hiring staff members who are a good match for the practice and the position. So it can be beneficial for the client company to change its idea from “attracting and retaining the best employees” to “attracting and recruiting the suitable employees.”A:Good idea! By recruiting the appropriate new staff, our client builds the employees’ commitment and retention will necessarily follow.B: Exactly.A: Then how to recruit the right staff is crucial to our client.B:Yes. To recruit the appropriate new hires, it’s important to advertise the job vacancy in the newspapers and magazines targeting at the ideal candidates.A: To ensure that a candidate’s skills match the job, it’s also importan t to limit the conditions and requirements of candidates on the job advertisement.B:Yes. Furthermore, the client company should strive to provide superior leadership in their practice, such as keeping communication lines open, periodically taking time to examine the workplace fr om the employee’s perspective, and continually seeking to improve it.A: Yeah, that will help to create and maintain a place where people want to work and stay. In addition, giving the employees a sense of empowerment should not be ignored.B: For example?A: Such as providing a breathing space to take risks, to use their own best judgment, and to be accountable for the decisions they’ve made etc.B: Yeah, that surely works.Task 3A:Our guests are arriving at weekend for a three day visit, so let’s look at our arrangement of activities for our guests. From the information we have gathered, they are people of very well cultured background, how about giving them some taste of Peking Opera at theCapital Theatre?B:I do not disagree, but I am afraid it shouldn’t be too long for that. There are other things I would want to bring to our attention. I mean we need to take cultural differences into consideration. I don’t think we can expect them to sit out a two hours performance that they understand practically little.A: Maybe we can arrange for half an hour of Peking opera before we take them for a late night dinner.B:Alright. In this case, we should book a room in a quite distinctive restaurant where we could have more privacy and at the same time enjoy the local food.B:If there is no further question, let’s get down to our preparation right now. 1.Q:What’s your name?A:My name is (Kate) (注:括号内的为参考答案)2 .Q:Where are you from?A:I come from (Jiangsu Province)3.
