I. BII. TTTFFIV.1.Being unsuccessful in one’s life and career and financiallydisadvantaged is regarded as shameful or even sinful because in this world people tend to think that only those who are successful now can be saved from evil in the future.2.It is important to see the fact that although they differ in their classstatus and educational background, human beings are essentially the same. First of all they are, biologically speaking, constructed in the same way, and then they all share the feelings of fear and joy, and also the common experience of suffering and achieving. This commonality has bound them together. All of them will regard wars, diseases, and disasters both private and public as unfortunate big events in their life time.V ocabularyI.1.inner nature; indispensable quality; the most important part2.sins leading to damnation3.making you think or act wrongly4.tasks traditionally required of students5.far from enoughV. 1. synonym: balanced, compensated2. antonym: unconventional3. antonym: abundant, plentiful4. synonym: evaluated, assessed5. synonym: average6. synonym: essentially, basically7. antonym: lightly, frivolously8. antonym: temporarilyVI.1.另见PPTTranslationI.1.不管我们的标准是什么,这个标准现在提高了,结果使你对自己没能得到更高的分数而感到失望。
1.For many parents, helping children develop healthy eating habits is a struggle. With the hectic pace of many families' lives and with more women working full time, even health-conscious parents are finding it easy to tolerate less than desirable eating habits.2." A lot of parents don't want to strugglewith the issue so they give up, letting kids make their own choices," says Jane Ress, director of nutrition service/education in adolescent medicine and lecturer in pediatrics at the Univer sity of Washington School of Medicine and Public Health.“But children's judgment is less mature and they still depend on parents to guide them."3.It is best to start training children about foods as soon as they can talk since they are most influenced by their families during the preschool years. Additionally, research has shown that heart and blood vessel disease can begin very early and that hardening of the arteries can be associated with a high-fat diet.4.Parents should carefully read food labels to check nutrients and ingredients. Most kids are attracted to the advertising and packaging of food, including highly sugared cereals. Rees suggests fitting them in occasionally as a treat in an overall diet that is focused on low sugar, low fat, and unprocessed foods.5.Although it's a myth that children become hyperactive by eating too much sugar, sugary food is still bad for oral health, can be stored as fat, and aggravates diabetes, says Rees. However, completely denying children sugar will only make it more tempting.6.Ress suggests involving young children in the food preparation process. For example, teach children how to set the table during their preschool years. Taken them grocery shopping. Let them choose some fruits and vegetables as well as the occasional treats, advises Rees. " You will see their capabilities grow enormously“ she says. " However, if parents don't follow the natural signs that kids are ready to help, they will lose the window of opportunity."7.Developing children's attitude toward food should be similar to teaching them how to handle money-by giving them growing responsibility along with sensible access. If children are properly prepared, they are more likely to make healthy food choices once they enter school. They will probably experiment some, but they will have a preference for fresh foods like fruits and vegetables along with foods like French fries, says Rees.8.What about changing the diet of children who have already fallen into the junk food habit? Once children reach age 10 or 12, it is very difficult to change their habits or force them to eat healthier foods. Rees suggests calling a family meeting to rationally discuss ways to eliminate most junk foods and substitute more nutritious ones. If they learn to eat a well- balanced diet, they won't need vitamin supplements, she says.9." Nutritional guidance won't work unless you have built up a good sense of nutrition overtime,”says Rees. However, even children who have developed a taste for nutritious food may change when they reach teenage years. Teenagers like to experiment with everything, including riskyfood behavior. They might gravitate toward highly processed foods, but once they become older and more independent they are likely to return to the healthy habits they had when growing up."10Other common problems among teenagers include girls who may view food as a treat to slimness, or boys who take muscle-building supplements. About 25% to 40% of teenagers are overweight, mostly from lack of exercise in combination with eating too much fat and sugar. This problem can turn into an emotionone and become a vicious circle-eating, or starving, to cope with unhappiness.11."If you see a real eating problem and there is anger and conflict," advises Rees,"seek professional intervention." Helpful support of family, friends and healthcare professionals is the best method for addressing eating disorders.1.对许多父母来说,培养孩子健康的饮食习惯不是件容易的事。

She was excited because she was going to spend five weeks helping biologists from the university perform research on animal behaviour. However, she was also nervous because she would travel with the scientists to Central America, and she had never been that far from home before. She knew that this was an amazing opportunity, though, and tried not to let her nervousness take control.Rebecca was chosen from among many students who were all competing for a spot on the research team. Rebecca had the best grades and a reputation for being reliable in her work. She also demonstrated creative thinking and showed the most promise in the field of biology. All in all, she was a very talented young woman. Most of her classmates were jealous, but they all still wished her luck and eagerly anticipated many great stories after she returned home at the end of the summer. The first couple of weeks in the field, Rebecca was limited to assisting the scientists. Most of her time was spent categorizing data. It was not the most glamorous work in the world, but she learned a lot and asked many questions. The rest of the research team realized how valuable Rebecca was, and she started to get her own assignments. Bit by bit, she was assigned more work and, by the end of the summer, she became a full-fledged member of the team! The team was researching the behaviour of Central American mammals, particularly the relationship between predator and prey. Rebecca spent most of her time in the forest observing a family of sloths and trying to stay as quiet as possible. After a few days of this, she discovered that a naturalist's work is often very dirty and involves many long, hot hours where not much happens. It's easy to get very bored when you spend all day watching a sleeping animal. However, Rebecca took very detailed notes and did her best to impress the scientists. At the end of the summer, the entire team had magnificent things to say about Rebecca. They were so happy with her andher work that they asked her to return the following summer! She couldn't wait to tell her friends — they were sure to be even more jealous of her good fortune!41. Others, like English, seem to welcome them. Robert MacNeil looks at the history of English and comes to the conclusion that its tolerance for change represents deeply rooted ideas of freedom.THE GLORIOUS MESSINESS OF ENGLISHRobert MacNeilThe story of our English language is typically one of massive stealing from other languages. That is why English today has an estimated vocabulary of over one million words, while other major languages have far fewer.French, for example, has only about 75,000 words, and that includes English expressions like snack bar and hit parade. The French, however, do not like borrowing foreign words because they think it corrupts their language. The government tries to ban words from English and declares that walkman is not desirable; so they invent a word, balladeur, which French kids are supposed to say instead — but they don't.Walkman is fascinating because it isn't even English. Strictly speaking, it was invented by the Japanese manufacturers who put two simple English words together to name their product. That doesn't bother us, but it does bother the French. Such is the glorious messiness of English. That happy tolerance, that willingness to accept words from anywhere, explains the richness of English and why it has become, to a very real extent, the first truly globallanguage. How did the language of a small island off the coast of Europe become the language of the planet —more widely spoken and written than any other has ever been? The history of English is present in the first words a child learns about identity (I, me, you); possession (mine, yours); the body (eye, nose, mouth); size (tall, short); and necessities (food, water). These words all come from Old English or Anglo-Saxon English, the core of our language. Usually short and direct, these are words we still use today for the things that really matter to us.Great speakers often use Old English to arouse our emotions. For example, during World War II, Winston Churchill made thisspeech, stirring the courage of his people against Hitler's armies positioned to cross the English Channel: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender."Virtually every one of those words came from Old English, except the last — surrender, which came from Norman French. Churchill could have said, "We shall never give in," but it is one of the lovely — and powerful — opportunities of English that a writer can mix, for effect, different words from different backgrounds. Yet there is something direct to the heart that speaks to us from the earliest words in our language. When Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55 B.C., English did not exist. The Celts, who inhabited the land, spoke languages that survive today mainly as Welsh. Where those languages came from is still a mystery, but there is a theory. Two centuries ago an English judge in India noticed that several words in Sanskrit closely resembled some words in Greek and Latin. A systematic study revealed that many modern languages descended from a commonparent language, lost to us because nothing was written down.Identifying similar words, linguists have come up with what they call an Indo-European parent language, spoken until 3500 to 2000 B.C. These people had common words for snow, bee and wolf but no word for sea. So some scholars assume they lived somewhere in north-central Europe, where it was cold. Traveling east, some established the languages of India and Pakistan, and others drifted west toward the gentler climates of Europe, Some who made the earliest move westward became known as the Celts, whom Caesar's armies found in Britain.New words came with the Germanic tribes — the Angles, the Saxons, etc. —that slipped across the North Sea to settle in Britain in the 5th century. Together they formed what we call Anglo-Saxon society. The Anglo-Saxons passed on to us their farming vocabulary, including sheep, ox, earth, wood, field and work. They must have also enjoyed themselves because they gave us the word laughter. The next big influence on English was Christianity. It enriched the Anglo-Saxon vocabulary with some 400 to 500 words from Greek and Latin, including angel, disciple and martyr. Then into this relatively peaceful land came the Vikings from Scandinavia. They also brought to English many words that begin with sk, like sky and skirt. But Old Norse and English both survived, and so you can rear a child (English) or raise a child (Norse). Other such pairs survive: wish and want, craft and skill, hide and skin. Each such addition gave English more richness, more variety.Another flood of new vocabulary occurred in 1066, when the Normans conquered England. The country now had three languages: French for the nobles, Latin for the churches and English for the common people. With three languages competing, there were sometimes different terms for the same thing. For example, Anglo-Saxons had the word kingly, but after the Normans, royal and sovereign entered the language as alternatives. The extraordinary thing was that French did not replace English. Over three centuries English gradually swallowed French, and by the end of the 15th century what had developed was a modified, greatly enriched language — Middle English —with about 10,000 "borrowed" French words.Around 1476 William Caxton set up a printing press inEngland and started a communications revolution. Printing brought into English the wealth of new thinking that sprang from the European Renaissance. Translations of Greek and Roman classics were poured onto the printed page, and with them thousands of Latin words like capsule and habitual, and Greek words like catastrophe and thermometer. Today we still borrow from Latin and Greek to name new inventions, like video, television and cyberspace. As settlers landed in North America and established the United States, English found itself with two sources — American and British. Scholars in Britain worried that the language was out of control, and some wanted to set up an academy to decide which words were proper and which were not. Fortunately their idea has never been put into practice. That tolerance for change also represents deeply rooted ideas of freedom. Danish scholar Otto Jespersen wrote in 1905, "The English language would not have been what it is if the English had not been for centuries great respecters of the liberties of each individual and if everybody had not been free to strike out new paths for himself."I like that idea. Consider that the same cultural soil producing the English language also nourished the great principles of freedom and rights of man in the modern world. The first shoots sprang up in England, and they grew stronger in America. The English-speaking peoples have defeated all efforts to build fences around their language.Indeed, the English language is not the special preserve of grammarians, language police, teachers, writers or the intellectual elite. English is, and always has been, the tongue of the common man. 31. Unit 7 Letter to a B Student答案综合教程二Dear Friend,I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. It has been a while since we last communicated, and I thought it fitting to share with you my thoughts on a topic that I believe will resonate with both of us. The topic at hand is the perception and value of being a 'B' student.Throughout our academic journeys, we have been bombarded with messages that emphasize the importance of achieving top grades, being at the top of our classes, and striving for perfection. It is often implied that anything short of an 'A' is a failure. However, I would like to challenge this notion and argue that being a 'B' student is not something to be discredited, but rather celebrated.First and foremost, it is crucial to acknowledge that grades are not the sole indicator of intelligence or potential. While an 'A' may signify extensive knowledge and outstanding performance in a particular subject, it does not necessarily reflect one's overall abilities or character. Education is a multifaceted journey that encompasses a wide range of skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and interpersonal skills. These qualities are not always reflected in letter grades but are essential for success in life beyond academia.Furthermore, being a 'B' student allows for a healthy work-life balance. It is no secret that achieving top grades requires immense dedication, sacrifice, and often comes at the expense of personal well-being. While it is essential to strive for excellence, it is equally important to engage inextracurricular activities, maintain relationships, and pursue personal interests. A 'B' student understands the value of balance, prioritizing overall growth and development rather than solely focusing on academic achievements.Another aspect worth considering is the valuable life lessons that being a 'B' student offers. Perfection is an unrealistic and unattainable goal. By embracing imperfection and accepting that failure is a part of the learning process, 'B' students cultivate resilience, adaptability, and grit. These qualities are invaluable in navigating the challenges of life, where success is often determined by how one copes with setbacks and perseveres in the face of adversity. Moreover, 'B' students tend to be more well-rounded individuals. By not fixating solely on academics, they have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of interests and passions. This exposure to different fields and experiences broadens their horizons, fostering creativity and a sense of curiosity that can extend far beyond the classroom. Combined with their ability to manage time efficiently, 'B' students are often equipped with a diverse skill set that allows them to excel in various spheres of life.In conclusion, being a 'B' student should be celebrated rather than dismissed. It is essential to redefine success beyond the confines of letter grades and recognize the value of personal growth, balance, and holistic development. By embracing imperfection and focusing on the lessons learned along the way, 'B' students can thrive both academically and in the vast realm of life.I hope you find solace and inspiration in these words, my dear friend. Let us celebrate the 'B' students and all that they bring to the table. May we all strive for excellence in our unique ways and remember that true success lies in the journey, not just the destination. With warm regards,[Your Name]。

English was first spoken by the Anglo-Saxons who invaded England in the fifth century. They passed onto us the basic vocabulary of English. In over fifteen centuries of its development, English has enriched itself by massive borrowing. As British immigrants landed in America and established the United States as an independent nation, a new variety was added to the English language: American English. Though some people worry that the language is running out of control, many native speakers of English take pride in the tolerance of their language.。
