1 Module 9 Population

Unit 1 The world’s population was about 7.8 billion in 2020.

1. I’ m preparing a report called “The world’s population”. 我正在准备一份名叫《世界人口》的报告。

(1) prepare 既可作vt，也可作vi.

名词形式为preparation

常见固定搭配：

① prepare sth. 准备某物

Eg. They begin to prepare yangge even a month before the Chinese New Year. 他们甚至在新年前一个月就开始准备秧歌表演。

② prepare to do sth. 准备做某事

Eg. My mother prepared to make dumplings for dinner. 我母亲准备包晚饭要吃的饺子。

③ prepare ... for ... 为...准备...

Eg. He didn’t like having to stay up to prepare things for the next day. 他不喜欢被迫熬夜准备第二天的东西。

④ prepare for sth. 为某事/物做准备

Eg. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and be unsurprised by everything in between. 做好最坏的打算，期望最好的结果，不要对介于两者之间的一切感到惊讶。

【例题】-What is Tom doing?

- He is the English speech in the hall.

(2) report ① n. 报告；汇报 make/give a report 作报告

Eg. I am going to make a report to my company. 我将向公司作报告。

② n. 报道；成绩报告单 a weather report 天气预报 a school report 学校成绩报告单

Eg. The weather report says it will be rainy for two more days, and then the sun will come out on Tuesday.

天气预报说还要下两天的雨，周二将会出太阳。

③ v. 报告；报道 reporter n. 记者，通讯员

It is reported that... 据报道...

Eg. We want to report the news as soon as possible. 我们想要尽快报道这则新闻。

It’s reported that many people die of traffic accidents each year. 据报道，每年有很多人死于交通事故。

My aunt is a reporter from The New York Times. 我姑姑是《纽约时报》的一名记者。

2. I can’t believe it! That’s a huge number. 我简直无法相信！ 那是一个巨大的数字。

(1) believe v. 相信

I don’t / can’t believe it! = It’s hard to believe！ 我简直难以置信！

Attention: believe 后接表示否定意义的宾语从句，且主句的主语是第一人称，须将否定前提，即汉语意思是否定从句，英语应否定主句。

Eg. I don’t believe that he can come. 我认为他不会来。

辨析：believe sb. & believe in sb.

Eg. I believe him.= I believe what he says. 我相信他（说的话）。

I believe in him. = I trust him. 我信任他。

【例题】-Do you know two hundred and fifty babies are born every minute in the world?

- ! It brings an increasing population.

A. I can’t believe it B. That’s very funny C. Hang on a minute D. That’s a good idea. believe sb. 表示“相信”某人的话，信以为真

believe in sb. 表示“相信，信任”某人的品行或能力

辨析： huge & big & large & great

词汇 用法

huge 强调尺寸和体积的庞大，容量和数量的巨大

big 是最广泛、最通俗常用的，强调比正常的程度、范围及规模的标准大，常用于修饰人、物或者数量。 反义词是little 和 small

large 强调远远超过标准的大，可指数量、容量、体积和面积的大。反义词是small

great 通常指抽象的事物，可以表示数量、距离和程度的大。修饰人时，意为“伟大的。”

Eg. There is a huge stone in the park. 公园里有一块巨大的石头。

This house isn’t big enough for us. 这座房子对我们来说不够大。

There are three sizes—small, medium and large. 有三种尺寸——小号、中号和大号。

The loss of his wife was a great blow to him.

他妻子去世对他来说是个巨大的打击。

3. The largest increase in population will take place in India, Nigeria and Pakistan. 人口增长最快将发生在印度、尼日利亚和巴基斯坦。

increase ① n. 增大，增长

have a(n) .. increase in... 在...方面增长...

Eg. Some scientists are paying attention to the housing price increase. 一些科学家正在关注房价的增长。

Many cities have a quick increase in the population aged over 65. 许多城市65岁以上的人口急剧增加。

② v. 增加，增大，增长

increase by + 倍数/百分数 增加了...

Eg. Their salary has increased by 20%. 他们的薪水增长了20%。

increase to + 具体增长后的数 增加到...

Eg. The number of the members in his club will increase to 300. 他的俱乐部成员数量将增长到300。

【例题】If every family has more than one child, the population will rapidly.

A. increase B. receive C. prepare D. raise

4. Hang on a minute! 稍等一会儿！

hang on 的用法

hang on 常用于口语中，意为“稍等”，其后常跟a minute, a second, a moment和a while等，表示等待的时间很短暂。也常用于电话用语中，表示“别挂断；请等一下；稍等”，其同意短语为hold on.

Eg. Hang on ! I’ll be back in a minute. 稍等！我马上就回来。

Please hang on/hold on a second. I’ll look for the manager. 请稍等片刻。我去找经理。

【例题】-Hello, may I speak to Mary, please?

- . She is coming soon.

5. When populations increase too fast，it can cause problems, such as too much traffic and noise. 当人口增长的太快时，会导致一些问题，比如交通拥挤和太多的噪音。

(1) cause 的用法

cause ① v. 造成；引起；导致 = lead to

cause sth 造成某结果

cause sb. sth. = cause sth. to sb. 给某人造成某事

Eg. This will cause (your parents) much trouble. 这将（给你的父母）造成很大麻烦。

cause sb./sth. to do sth. 引起某人/某物做某事

Eg. The heavy rain caused rivers to rise. 大雨引起河水上涨。

② n. 原因；起因；理由 （近义词为reason）

3 Eg. Smoking is one of the causes of heart disease. 吸烟是心脏病的诱因之一。

The stone caused the accident and it was the only cause. 这块石头引起了事故，并且它是唯一的原因。

(2) problem的用法

problem cn. 麻烦的事；问题

have problems (in) doing sth. 做某事有困难

have no problem (in) doing sth. 做某事没有困难

Eg. Can you work out this maths problem？你能做出这道数学题吗？

Some parents have problems in communicating with their children. 一些父母和他们的孩子交流有困难。

I have no problem in finishing my homework。我完成家庭作业没有问题。

一、教学内容分析

Unit 2 Arnwick was a city with 200,000 people

教学对象 初中二年级学生。在初中阶段的英语教学中，初二年级的分化现象往往十分突出，直接影响着学生在整个中学阶段的英语成绩，同时也阻碍了初中英语教学质量的提高。因此，如何防止分化，大面积提高教学质量，使学生在初中阶段获得较好的成绩，是英语教师值得研究讨论并着手解决的问题。怎样激发学生的学习内在动力，使学生积极主动地学习，也是防止分化的一个重要方面。初二学生要是能听懂老师和同学说的英语，自己能用英语表达简单的思想，能读懂简易读物，他们就会感到有收获，兴趣就会产生，所以每堂课我都注意让学生有大量练的内容，有大量练的时间。每次练习五分钟左右，费时不多收获较大。另外，给学生留同步阅读训练作业，以开阔学生眼界。异国他乡的风俗习惯、名人趣事，如能依靠自己的能力在英语阅读中了解到，会大大激发学生的学习热情，增强学习兴趣。

本模块以人口为主题，涉及环境污染、城市发展等内容。本节阅读课是对本单元话题的深入拓展，是本单元教学的核心环节。它介绍的是15岁的女孩Jo本住在里大城市不远的一个安静的村庄里，后因外来人口的增多，她的村庄成了Arnwick的郊区，村里没有了平房，变成了高楼大厦，但从而也出现了如交通、污染等一系列问题，使学生很容易联想到现实生活。作为一节阅读课，这节课的重点是通过阅读，能够唤起学生们的忧患意识，并培养他们在实际生活中提出问题、分析问题、解决问题的能力。通过学习，要求学生为家乡出谋划策，增强学生主人翁的意识。
