Unit 4 EarthquakesⅠ. AAn earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.Fragile items, like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up.Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is strong movement, these pieces will fall to the floor directly and not on you. There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake.Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged.Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you.Never use the elevator to go down.Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go e the staircases at all times. If you are outdoors,do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place.Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object. If trapped in debris (瓦砾堆),cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find e a whistle (哨子) if one is available.Never shout for help.Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust.Do not light a match because you may burn yourself.Do not move about or kick up dust.1.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “Fragile”in Paragraph 2?A.Easily found.B.Easily broken.C.Expensive.D.Heavy.2.Where should the items made of glass be put to reduce the injury from the earthquake?A.On cupboards.B.On a lower surface.C.In the bedroom.D.Where children can’t reach them.3.What are people advised to do during the earthquake?A.Go out the building at once.B.Drive to a safe place quickly.C.Take shelter under a tree.D.Turn off electricity and gas immediately.

The deadliest quake of all time might be one of the least talked about, considering it occurred nearly 450 years ago. The 1556 quake claimed the lives of some 830,000 people. Why the massive death toll? Blame the quake's strength (8.0 on the Richter scale, or more than 30 times more powerful than the recent quake in Haiti) as well as timing and location. The pre-modern structures were utterly unableto withstand a quake of such force, and massivelandslides contributed to the casualties.
China has the misfortune to have had the second deadliest earthquake on record, the 1976 Great Tangshan Earthquake, which struck in the country's northeast. It'd be more accurate to call this a binaryquake: an aftershock that struck 16 hours afterthe initial temblor measured an identical 7.8 onthe Richter scale and was equally destructive.

Unit 4 EarthquakesⅠ.阅读理解A(2020·贵阳市四校高三年级联考四) Every year, thousands of teenagers participate in programs at their local art museums. But do any of them remember their time at museum events later in life?A new report suggests that the answer is yes—and fin ds that artsbased museum programs are credited with changing the course of alumni's(毕业生的) lives, even years after the fact. The Whitney Museum of American Art,the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art,Los Angeles recently asked researchers to conduct a study to find out how effective their longstanding teen art programs really are. They involved over 300 former participants of four programs for teens that have been in existence since the 1990s.Alumni,whose current ages range from 18 to 36,were invited to find out how they viewed their participation years after the fact.Among the alumni surveyed,75 percent of them thought the teen art program experience had the most favorable impact on their own lives, beating the family, school and their neighborhoods.Nearly 55 percent thought that it was one of the most important experiences they'd ever had, regardless of age.And twothirds said that they were often in situations where their experience in museums affected their actions or thoughts. It turns out that participating in art programs also helps keep teens enthusiastic about culture even after they reach adulthood:Ninetysix percent of participants had visited an art museum within the last two years, and 68 percent had visited an art museum five or more times within the last two years.Thirtytwo percent of alumni work in the arts as adults.Though the study is the first of its kind to explore the impact of teenspecific art programs in museums,it reflects other research on the important benefits of engaging with the arts.A decade of surveys by the National Endowment for the Artsfound that the childhood experience with the arts is significantly associated with people's income and educational attainments(成就) as adults.Other studies have linked arts education to everything from lower dropout rates to improvement in critical thinking skills.
