Unit 4TrainA train is a connected series of vehicles for rail transport that move along a track to transport cargo or passengers from one place to another. The track usually consists of two rails, but might also be a monorail or maglev guideway.Propulsion for the train is provided by a separate locomotive. Most modern trains are powered by diesel locomotives, although historically (from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century) the steam locomotive was the dominant form of locomotive power. There are various types of train designed for particular purposes. A train can consist of one or more locomotives and attached railroad cars.A passenger train may consist of one or several locomotives, and one or more coaches. Passenger trains travel between stations, at which passengers may board and disembark. In most cases, passenger trains operate on a fixed schedule and have superior track occupancy rights over freight trains.Oversight of a passenger train is the responsibility of the conductor. He or she is usually assisted by other crew members, such as service attendants or porters. During the heyday of North American passenger rail travel, long distance trains carried two conductors: the aforementioned train conductor, and a Pullman conductor, the latter being in charge of sleeping car personnel. Some passenger trains, both long distance and short distanced, may use bi-level (double-decker) cars to carry more passengers per train. Car design and the general safety of passenger trains have dramatically evolved over time, making travel by rail remarkably safe.Freight trains comprise wagons , though some parcel and mail trains are more like passenger trains. Much of the world's freight is transported by train, and in the United States the rail system is used more for transporting freight than passengers. Under the right circumstances, transporting freight by train is highly economic, and also more energy efficient than transporting freight byroad. Rail freight is most economic when freight is being carried in bulk and over long distances, but is less suited to short distances and small loads.译文列车列车是铁路运输中连接起来的一组车辆,它们在轨道上行驶,从一地向另一地运输旅客或货物。

statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C,and D.You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on The Answer Sheet.(40points)Passage OneQuestions1to5are based on the following passage:A man once said how useless it was to put advertisements in the newspapers.“Last week,”he said,my umbrella was stolen from a London church. As it was a present,I spent twice its worth in advertising, but didn’t get it back.“How did you write your advertisement?”asked one of the listeners,a merchant.“Here it is,”said the man, taking out of his pocket a slip cut from a newspaper,The other man took it and read,“Lost from the City Church last Sunday evening,a black silk umbrella. The gentleman who finds it will receive ten shillings on leaving it at No.10Broad Street.”“Now,”said the merchant,“I often advertise, and find that it pays me well. But the way in which an advertisement is expressed is of extreme importance.Let us try for your umbrella again, and if it fails,I’ll buy you a new one.”The merchant then took a slip of paper out of his pocket and wrote:“If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the City Church last Sunday evening doesn’t wish to get into trouble,he will return the umbrella to No.10Broad Street. He is well known.”This appeared in the paper, and on the following morning, the man was astonished when the opened the front door.In the doorway lay at least twelve umbrellas of all sizes and colors that had been thrown in,and his own was among the number. Many of them had notes fastened to them saying that they hand been taken by mistake, and begging the loser not to say anything about the matter.1.The man once thought advertising was.A.of little useB.of some useC.practicalD.valuable2.The result of the first you are sad, anxious, angry or simple lonely.Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out:sometimes, though, there is no one to listen.Modern pharmacology(药物学)offers a lot of tranquilizers(镇静剂), antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. What many people don’t realize, however,is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug approaches to make you free from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being non-poisonous.So next time you feel out of sorts, don’t head for the drug-store,try the following approach.Of all the mood-altering self-help techniques, aerobic(增氧健体的)exercise seems to be the most efficient cure for a bad mood.“If you could keep the exercise, you’d be in high spirits.”Says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise compared favorably to drugs as a mood-raiser.Physical exertion such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercise—running, cycling, walking, swimming or other repetitive and tamed activities that boost the heart rate, increase circulation(血液循环)and improve the overcome bad mood.B.Aerobic exercise can make you in high spirits.C.Swimming,walking,or running is an efficient cure for a bad mood.D.Taking anti-anxiety drugs might do harm to people’s activities are essentially modified forms of hunting behavior.Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter’s triumph of killing his prey.To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look back at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving as cooperative hunters.Their very survival depended on success in the hunting field.Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed:They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey killers. They cooperated as skillful male group attack. Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting the food, they became farmers.Their improved intelligence,so vital to their old hunting life was put to a new use—that of controlling and domesticating(驯养)their prey. The hunt became suddenly outof date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for survival. The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets.Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting consequences, but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation.Instead the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that was no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten, but there were other purposes, much simpler of obtaining a meaty meal.11.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Hunting is very important in human civilization.B.Sporting activities satisfy the desire of modern society.C.It’s hunting that provides human beings with food.D.The importance of sporting activities in modern society.12.According to the author, sporting activities.A.are essential to the survivalB.have actually developed from huntingC.evolve as biological developmentD.are football games13.For over a million years.our forefathers were basically.A.skillful sportsmenB.successful farmersC.cooperating huntersD.runners and jumpers14.The word“operation(Par.4)refers to.A.prey killingB.huntingC.farmersD.sports activities15.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.Without hunting our forefathers couldn’t live.B.The goalmouth is equal to the weapon in hunting.C.After our forefathers became farmers they still hunted for food.D.Farmers are satisfied with stable lives and they didn’t have enthusiasm for hunting any more.Passage FourQuestions16to20are based on the following passage:Women are on the whole more verbal than men. They are good at1anguage and verbal reasoning, while men tend to be skilled at tasks demanding visual-spatial(视空)abilities.In fact, along with aggression these are the most commonly accepted difference between these sexes.Words are tools for communicating with other people especially information about people. They are mainly social tools.Visual and spatial abilities are good for imagining and manipulating objects and for communicating information about them. Are these talents programmed into the brain? In some of the newest and most controversial research in neurophysiology,it has been suggested that when it comes to the brain males are specialists while women are generalists. But one knows that,if anything this means in terms of the abilities of the two sexes. Engineering is both visual and spatial and it’s true that there are relatively few women engineers. But women become just as skilled as men at shooting a rifle or driving a car task that involve visual-spatial skills. They also do equally well at programming a computer, which is neither visual nor spatial.Women do,however, seem less likely to fall in love with the objects themselves. We all know men for whom machines seem to be extensions of their identity.A woman is more likely to see her car, rifle or computer as a useful tool but not in itself fascinating.16.According to the passage, women are usually good at.A.body languageB.logical reasoningC.tasks demanding for the use of wordsD.both A and B17.The word“accepted”in the last sentence of the first paragraph roughly means.A.believedB.assumedC.receivedD.reconciled18.In the author’s opinion, visual and spatial abilities are good for______.A.achieving one’s objects.B.mind and body.C.programming talents into the brain.D.imagination and communication.19.All the following tasks involve visual-spatial abilities EXCEPT.A.imagining and handling objects.B.providing a computer with a set of instructionsC.shooting a gun and driving an automobileD.planning and making things as an engineer does20.Why do women seem less likely to fall in love with the objects themselves?A.Because they have no visual-spatial skills.B.Because they are only good at1anguage and verbal reasoning.C.Because they are less likely to see their charming or interesting aspects.D.Because they rarely use machines such as cars, rifles, computers, etc.Format IIDirections:In the following passage, some sentences have been removed. For questions21to 25,choose the most suitable sentence from choices A to G to fit into each of the numbered blanks. It began to decline (衰落) about a hundred years ago, when many girls left home to go into service in town many miles away, and men also left home in increasing numbers in search of a work, and home was where work was. There are still a number of people alive today who can remember w hat “village life”meant in the early years of the present century. It meant knowing and being known by everybody else in the village. It meant finding your entertainment in the village of within walking distance of it. It meant housewives tied to the home all day and every day. It meant going to bed early to save lamp oil and coal. Then came the First World War and the Second World War. After each war, new ideas, new attitudes, new trades and occupations were revealed (展现) to villagers. The long - established order of society was no longer taken for granted. Electricity and the motorcar were steadily operating to make village life and town life almost alike. Now with the highly developed science and technology and high - level social welfare for all, there is no point whatever in talking any longer about village life. It is just life, and that a better life. Finally, if we have any doubts about the future, or about the many changes, which we have seen in our lives, we have only to look in at the school playground any mid - morning; or see the children as they walk homeward in little groups. Obviously these children are better fed, better clothed, better educated, healthier, prettier and happier than any generation of children that ever before walked the village street.45. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the “system” of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price”, manywould reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or, in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amount of money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but also the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both the buyer and the seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise the total “package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.49. (58)Academic writing among professionals is a way to create new knowledge. A professor assigns students to write a paper. (59)The students examine an issue, review what is already known, think about what they have learned and come to some conclusion. This means that each student-writer must present information and also take a position. The student might support an idea, question it or even disprove it. (60)Or the writer could show how the subject may be understood better or in a different way than it has been. And the student must support the position with evidence. Cultural differences may interfere when international students try to write this way. (61) Students in many countries have learned to write beautiful descriptions about something without ever stating the main idea. American college students are expected to state their main idea at the beginning of the paper. (62) In other cultures, paragraphs may be organized to build toward the main idea, which is revealed at the end.permission.。

In the next six months, they showed a gradual fluctuation. At the start of November, they began to pick up and from November to December, imports increased abruptly to reach a peak of 17 billion. At the beginning of this year, a sudden decline in exports led to steep fall in imports.6 Market Share of MEX Company ProductsThis pie graph shows the breakdown of the market share of MEXAfrica 5%USA 40%Japan 15%Company products in the world. In China, students get 90% of their money from their parents while in America, only 50% of students’ money is provided by parents. In addition, Chinese students earn only 5% of their money from part time jobs and 5% from fellowship or scholarship while income from these two resources for American students takes up 35% and 15% respectively of their total income.I think there are probably three reasons for their differences. First, because of the influence of different social and family values, Chinese students have formed the habit of asking for money from their parents while American students have developed more sense of being financially independent. Second, most Chinese parents devote too much care to their children and they would rather save up to afford their children’s education rather than encourage them to take part-time jobs. But in America, many parents pay moreattention to developing the students’ ability of self-reliance, so they encourage their children to find part-time job to earn some money by themselves. Third, since America is more developed than China, it is relatively easy for students to find part time jobs. In China, such opportunities are rather rare.I believe with the development of China, more and more Chinese students will realize and pay more attention to the necessity of self dependence. In addition, more and more opportunities will be provided for them to take part-time jobs. So more students will go out of the ivory tower to broaden their knowledge and to become the master of their own lives.10 The table below gives information about changes in modes of travel in England between 1985 and 2000.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The table indicates the number of miles by the average English person in 1985 and 2000, using various means of transport. The number of miles walked, cycled and traveled by local bus all decreased. Of these, the number of miles traveled by local bus decreased the most, from 429 miles in 1985 to 274 miles in 2000.The number of miles traveled by car, long distance bus, train and taxi all increased. The number of miles driven by car was 3,199 in 1985 and rose by 50% to 4,806 in 2000. The number of miles traveled by long distance bus more than doubled from 54 miles(1985)to 124 miles (2000). The number of miles driven by taxi trebled from 13 miles(1985) to 42 miles (2000). The use of other, unspecified, forms of transport alsoincreased.Overall, the number of miles traveled by the average English person rose from 4,740miles in 1985 to 6,475 miles in 2000, with the increase of cars accounting for almostall of that increase.11A. staying at homeB. travelingC. doing social investigationD. other waysFrom the two charts, we can see that in the past ten years the students who go traveling and do social investigations during vacations have increased greatly while those who stay at home have decreased a lot. There are several reasons for the changes. Firstly, with the development of economy, many people have become better off. Students can get financial support from their parents for traveling. Secondly, tourism has greatly developed over the past ten years. Many new scenic spots have been built and exploited. In addition, the students today are expected and encouraged to participate in facing the real world. In this way they can obtain the necessary experiences required when they go job-hunting upon graduation. From the changes in the charts, we can predict that more and more college students will make their vacations interesting andworthwhile by going to the outside world instead of staying at home.1213 How Americans spend their money10 20 30 4050 60 informationEntertainmentMaking friends StudyOthersPercentageCollege Students ’ On-line Behaviors1415 The table below show social and economic indicators of fourcountries in 1994, according to United Nations statistics.Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.。

Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities, others lose heart at the first sign of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “fight or flight” and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Since we can’t remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.46. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because___________.A) they regard working as their greatest enjoymentB) they believe that work is superior to relaxationC) they are traveling fast all the timeD) they are becoming busier with their work than even before47. According to the author, the most important character for a good manager is his _________.A) unyielding will to hold out stressB) knowing the art of relaxationC) high sense of responsibilityD) having control over performance48. Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage?A) We can find quite a few ways to avoid stressB) Stress is always harmful to people’s healthC) It’s easy to change the habit of keeping oneself bus y with workD) Different people can bear different amount of stress49. In the last sentence of passage, “do so” refers to “_________”.A) expose ourselves to stressB) find ways to deal with stressC) remove stress from our livesD) establish links between diseases and stressPassage ThreeQuestions 50 to 53 are based on the following passage.More and more, the operations of our businesses, governments, and financial institutions are controlled by information that exists only inside computer memories. Anyone clever enough to modify this information for his own purposes can reap big reward. Even worse, a number of people who have done this and been(本试卷共12页第5页)(本试卷共12页第6页)caught at it have managed to get away without punishment. It’s easy for computer crimes to go undetected if no one checks up on what the computer is doing. But even if the crime is detected, the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but with a glowing recommendation from his former employers.Of course, we have no statistics on crimes that go undetected. But it’s disturbing to note how many of the crimes we do know about were detected by accident, not by systematic inspections or other security procedures. The computer criminals who have been caught may have been the victims of uncommonly bad luck.Unlike other lawbreakers, who must leave the country, commit suicide, or go to jail, computer criminals sometimes escape punishment, demanding not only that they not be charged but that they be given good recommendations and perhaps other benefits. All too often, their demands have been met. Why? Because company executives are afraid of the bad publicity that would result if the public found out that their computer had been misused. They hesitate at the thought of a criminal boasting in open court of how he juggled (诈骗) the most confidential(保密)records right under the noses of the company’s executives, accountants, and security staff. And so another computer criminal departs with just the recommendations he needs to continue his crimes elsewhere.50. It can be concluded from the passage that _______________.A) it is still impossible to detect computer crimes todayB) people commit computer crimes at the request of their companyC) computer criminals escape punishment because they can’t be detectedD) computer crimes are the most serious problem in the operation of financial institutions51. Which of the following statements is mentioned in the passage?A) A strict law against computer crimes must be enforced.B) Companies usually hesitate to uncover computer crimes to protect their reputation.C) Companies will guard against computer crimes to protect their reputation.D) Companies need to impose restrictions on confidential information.52. What may happen to computer criminals once they are caught?A) With a bad reputation they can hardly find another job.B) They may walk away and easily find another job.C) They will be denied access to confidential records.D) They must leave the country to go to jail.53. The passage is mainly about _________________.A) why computer criminals are often able to escape punishmentB) why computer crimes are difficult to detect by systematic inspectionsC) how computer criminals mange to get good recommendations from their former employersD) why computer crimes can’t be eliminatedSection B Short Answer Questions (4 points, 1 point each) Directions: Read the following two business letters.
