6.Apparatus

6.1TensileTester—Aconstantrateofextensiontype.

6.2TestFixture(Fig.1orFig.28)—Tobemountedintothe

jawsofthetensiletester.Apanelheldbythetestfixtureallows

fora1in.2(25by25mm)contactareaofthepressure-sensitive

article.Alternately,thetestfixturemayincludearaisedarea

thatallowsa1in.2(25by25mm)contactareaofthe

pressure-sensitivearticle.

6.2.1Thepanelortheraisedareaofthetestfixtureis

stainlesssteelasspecifiedinSpecificationA666.

6.3ApparatusforCutting:

6.3.1DieCutter—A1by7in.(25by175mm)rectangular

mallet-typediecutterwithmalletforsamplepreparation.

1-in.(25-mm)steelbarwithadoublerazorknifeorother

apparatussuitableforcuttingthespecimenintothespecified

6.4AbsorbentLint-FreeCleaningMaterial—Materialspro-

ducedfromentirelyvirginrawmaterialsandcontainingless

than0.25%byweightofsolvent-leechablematerials.

6.5MaskingTape—1in.(25mm)wide.

6.62mil(0.05mm)PETFilm—Tobeusedasasupport

mediuminevaluatingunsupportedadhesivessuchastransfer

tapes,laminatingadhesives,orotherfree-filmadhesives.

6.7Reagents—Appropriatereagentsincludeacetone,diac-

etonealcohol,n-heptaneandtoluene,reagentoranalytical

grade,oranethanolcleanerforwater-basedadhesives.

7.SamplePreparation

7.1Cutsampleinto1by7in.(25by175mm)specimen

stripsinthemachinedirection(whenknown)ofthepressure-sensitivearticle.Useofstripsofotherlengthsmaychange

results.Cutatleastthreespecimenstripsforeachadhesiveto

betested.

NOTE1—Iftransferorunsupportedadhesivesaretobetested,thesearetobelaminatedto2mil(0.05mm)PETfilm,usedasanadhesivesupport,priortocuttingthesamplesintothe1by7in.(25by175mm)specimenstrips.

7.2Conditionspecimenstobetestedforatleast24hina

testingroomat73.463.6°F(2362°C)andarelative

humidityof5065%,inaccordancewithSpecificationE171,

priortoconductingthetest.

9.Procedure

9.1Ensurethatthetensiletesteriscalibratedaccordingto

instructionssuppliedbythemanufacturer.

9.2Settheinstrumentcrossheadspeedat12in.(300

mm)/min.

9.3Placethetestfixtureinthelowergripofthetensile

tester.Itisimportantthatthetestfixturebelevelandstraight

inthelowergrip.SeeFig.1,Fig.2andFig.3.

9.4Setgapsforthecrossheadusingtheminimumand

maximumgapsettingontheextensioncycle.Setgaps160.05

in.(2561mm)(critical)and460.1in.(10063mm)

(optional)fromthebottomoftheuppergripstothefaceofthe

stainlesssteelportionofthetestfixturewhenthetestfixtureis

Repeatforatotalofthreewashesafterthetestfixtureappears

clean.Allow2mintoelapseaftercleaningtoensurecomplete

evaporationofthecleaningsolvent.Theusermustensurethat

thecleaningmethodusedremovesallresiduefromthetest

fixture.Thewater-breaktest,describedinGuideD2651,may

beusedtoverifycleanliness.

9.6Completelyremovethereleaseliner(ifthepressure-

sensitivearticlenormallyincludesareleaseliner)fromthe

specimen.

9.7Bendthespecimencompletelybackonitself,being

carefulnottocreaseit.Thespecimenformsateardropshaped

loopwiththeadhesivesurfacefacingout.

9.8Fastentheendsofthelooptogether,usingastripof

maskingtape1in.(25mm)wide(Fig.4).Themaskingtape

coverstheendsoftheloop,preventingcontaminationofthe

gripsofthetensiletester.

9.9Insertthetapedendofthespecimenloopintotheupper

gripssothatthebottomedgeofthemaskingtapeisevenwith

thebottomedgesofthegrips.

9.10Turnonthechartrecorder.Activatethetensiletesterso

thatthecrossheadmovesdownward.Themid-sectionofthe

specimenloopmustcontactthecenterofthestainlesssteel

portionofthetestfixture.Whenthecrossheadreachesits

minimumposition,itwillimmediatelyswitchdirectionand

moveupward.Whenthecrossheadisatitsminimumposition,

thespecimenloopwillcompletelycoverthe1in.(25mm)area

ofthestainlesssteelportionofthetestfixturewithout

excessive“hang-over”oftheedges.

NOTE2—Ifthetensiletesterdoesnothaveautomaticcycling,cyclingmustbedonemanually.
