1.7 Background:
Subsequent to the development of the BSc in Mathematics (Mathematics and
IT Education) programme, the HKUST and the HKIEd have jointly developed
four other collaborative programmes: BSc in Biochemistry and Science
Education, BSc in Biology and Science Education, BSc in Chemistry and
Science Education, and BSc in Physics and Science Education, with the awards
to be conferred by the HKUST. The HKUST will contribute approximately
three-year equivalent of teaching in Academic Studies (i.e. Biochemistry,
Biology, Chemistry or Physics), and the HKIEd will contribute about one-year
equivalent of teaching in professional and curriculum studies, plus the
necessary field experience starting from the third year of the 4-year
programme.
51.8 Special Feature:
The 4-year BSc programmes in Science Education are professional degree
programmes offering Academic Studies, Professional Studies, Curriculum and
Methods in Science Education, and Field Experience.
The curriculum design of this 4-year programmes is different from the
traditional “first degree plus one year professional training” model. In these
programmes, the Professional Studies are offered concurrently with Academic
Studies starting from the second year. It is considered that such a programme
design will provide more opportunities, when compared with traditional model,
for students to develop into effective teachers.
1.9 Medium of Instruction:
Students in the BSc SCED will be expected to be able to read educational
literature in both English and Chinese. As future teachers, students should
acquire a command of their subject-specific terminology in appropriate
languages.
Students in the BSc SCED will, on graduation, need to assist secondary school
students to prepare for future careers and higher education opportunities in a
multi-lingual and international city. They will therefore be expected to take
advantage of opportunities available in the programme and on campus to
develop competence in both English and Chinese (spoken Cantonese and
Putonghua, and standard written Chinese) in line with the aims of education
for Hong Kong in general.
Support will be provided to assist students in meeting the language demands of
this policy. Language enhancement programmes will be available, as well as
the extensive language learning facilities and services in the ASLLC within
Centre for Language in Education.
The Centre for Language in Education (CLE) will offer an English classroom
language enhancement course for BSc SCED students. Details of the
language enhancement programme of study and new implementation
procedures available at the CLE.
