How technology pushes down price1 Prices have fallen in the food business because of advances in food productionand distribution technology. Consumers have benefited greatly from those advances.People who predicted that the world would run out of food were wrong. We are producing more and more food with less and less capital. Food is therefore more plentiful and cheaper than it has ever been. Spending on food compared with other goods has fallen for many years, and continues to drop.2 Supermarkets have helped push down prices mainly because of their scale. Likeany big business, they can invest in IT systems that make them efficient. And their size allows them to buy in bulk. As supermarkets get bigger, the prices get lower.3 Huge retail companies such as Wal-Mart have tremendous power and they can putpressure on producers to cut their margins. As a result, some producers have had to make cuts. In recent years, Unilever has cut its workforce by 33,000 t0 245,000 and dropped lots of its minor brands as part of its "path to growth" strategy. Cadbury has shut nearly 20 per cent of its 133 factories and cut 10 per cent of its 55,000 global workforce. These cuts help keep costs down, and the price of food stays low.4 Does cheap food make people unhealthy? Cheap food may encourage people to eatmore. Food companies certainly think that giving people more food for their money makes them buy more. Giving people bigger portions is an easy way of making them feel they have got a better deal. That is why portions have got larger and larger. In America, soft drinks came in 80z (225g) cans in the past, then 120z (350g), and now come in 200z (550g) cans.1f a company can sell you an 80z portion for $7, they can sell you a 120z portion for $8. The only extra cost to the company is the food, which probably costs 25 cents.5 Now companies are under pressure to stop selling bigger portions for less money. But it is hard to change the trend.【概括大意整体解题技巧】:概括大意部分的整体解题思路是:分析选项中的信息词(重点词);其次回归原文找到段落的中心句,关于找中心句的技巧在培训班中高中一年级;查读法八概括大意完成句子;冲刺技巧二概括大意和完成句子技巧中有明确的讲解,具体的讲义页数在第106页;最后在看选项中哪一项的中心词出现在段落中心句中。

DNA testingDNA testing reveals the genes of each individual person. Since the early twentieth century scientists have known that all human characteristics are contained in a person's genes and are passed from parents to children. Genes work as a chemical instruction manual for each part and each function of the body. Their basic chemical element is called DNA, a copy of which can be found in every cell. The existence of genes and the chemical structure of DNA were understood by the mid-1900s, but scientists have only recently been able to identify a person from just a drop of blood or a single hair. One of the most important uses of DNA testing is in criminal investigation. The very first use of DNA testing in a criminal case was in 1985 in Great Britain, when a man confessed to killing a young woman in the English countryside. Because police had found samples of the killer's DNA at the scene of the crime, a biologist suggested that it might be possible to compare that DNA to some from the confessor's blood. To everyone's surprise, the tests showed that he was not the killer. Nor was he guilty of a similar murder that had happened some time earlier. At that point he admitted that he had confessed to the crimes out of fear and police pressure. The police then asked 5,000 local men for samples of their blood, and DNA testing revealed that one of them was the real murderer, so the first man was set free.In 1992, two law professors, Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck, decided to use DNA evidence to help set free such mistakenly convicted prisoners. With the help of their students, they created a not-for-profit organization called the Innocence Project. Most of their clients are poor men, many from racial and ethnic minorities. In fact, studies have shown that U.S. judges and juries are often influenced by racial and ethnic background, and that people from minority groups are more likely to be convicted. Some of these men had been sentenced to death, a form of punishment used in thirty eight states out of fifty (as of 2006)。

Albert Stunkard of the University of Pennsylvania found from experiments that,“80 percent of the Children of two obese parents become obese,as compared with no more than 14 percent of the offspring of two parents of normal weight.” How can obese people become normal or even thin through dieting? Well, dieting can be effective.but the health costs are tremendous.Jules Hirsch,a research physician at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people. They were given a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day1.After more than 10 weeks, the subjects lost 45kg on average. But after leaving the hospital, they all regained. The results were surprising:by metabolic measurement, fat people who lost large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric problems. They dreamed of food or breaking their diet2.They were anxious and depressed;some were suicidal. They hid food in their rooms.Researchers warn that it is possible that weight reduction doesn't result in normal weight, but in an abnormal state resembling that of starved non-obese people. Thin people, however, suffer from the opposite:They have to make a great effort to gain weight.Ethan Sims,of the University of Vermont, got prisoners to volunteer to gain weight. In four to six months, they ate as much as they could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 to 25 percent. But months after the study ended, they were back to normal weight and stayed there. This did not mean that people are completely without hope in controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to constantly battle their genetic inheritance if they want to significantly lower their weight. The findings also provide evidence for something scientists thought was true-each person has a comfortable weight range3.The range might be as much as 9kg.Someone might weigh 60-69 kg without too much effort But going above of below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by feeling hungry or full and changing the metabolism to push the weight back to the range it seeks. 1. When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most case, may end up with a faulty and inexactcommand. What accounts for this difference?Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behavior of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions, which come to him in a flash, ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation. Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adultlanguage-student has each week a limited number of hours, which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in Juneor scorching heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled. Finally, though a childs "teachers" may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.1. Compared with adults learning a foreign language, children learn their native language with ease.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned2. Adults’ knowledge and mental powers hinder their complete mastery of a foreign language.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned3. The reason why children learn their mother tongue so well lies solely in their environment of learning.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned4. Plenty of practice in listening during the first years of life partly ensures children’s success of learning their mother tongue.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned5. A child learning his native language has the advantage of having private lessons all the year round.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned6. Gestures and facial expressions may assist a child in mastering his native language.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned7. So far as language teaching is concerned, the teachers close personal relationship with the student is more important than the professional language teaching training he has received.A. RightB. This is America’s cultural capital. It is also her biggest city, with a population of nearly 8 million. In the summer it is hot, hot, hot and in the winter it can be very cold. Still there are hundreds of things to do and see all the year round.2. Manhattan is the real center of the city. When people say “New York City,” they usually mean Manhattan. Most of the interesting shops, buildings and museums are here. In addition, Manhattan is the scene of New York’s busy night life. In 1605 the first Europeans came to Manhattan from Holland. They bought the island from the Native Americans for a few glass necklaces worth about $26 today.3. Wall street in Manhattan is the financial heart of the USA. It is also the most important banking center in the world. It is a street of “skyscrapers.” These are those incredible, high buildings, which Americans invented, and built faster and higher than anyone else. Perhaps the two most spectacular skyscrapers in New York are the two towers of the New York World Trade Center. When the sun sets, their 110 floors shine like pure gold.4. Like every big city, New York has its own traffic system. Traffic jams can be terrible. It’s usually quickest to go by subway. The New York subway is easy to use and quite cheap. The subway goes to almost every corner of Manhattan. But it is not safe to take the subway late at night because in some places you could get robbed. New York buses are also easy to use. You see more if you go by bus. There are more than 30,000 taxis in New York. They are easy to see, because they are bright yellow and carry large TAXI signs. Taxis do not go outside the city. However, they will go to the airports. In addition to the taxi fare, people give the taxi driver a tip of 15 percent of the fare’s value.5. Central Park is a beautiful green oasis in the middle of New Yo rk’s concrete desert. It is surprisingly big, with lakes and woods, as well as organized recreation areas. New Yorkers love Central Park, and they use it all the time. In the winter, they go ice-skating, and in the summer roller-skating. They play ball, ride horses and have picnics. They go bicycling and boating. There is even a children’s zoo, with wild birds and animals.6. Along the east side of Central Park runs Fifth Avenue, once called “Millionaire’s Row.” In the 19th century, the richest men in America built their magnificent homes here. It is still the most fashionable street in the city, with famous department stores.7. Broadway is the street where you will find New York’s best-known theaters. But away from the bright lights and elegant clothes of Broadway are many smaller theaters. Their plays are called “off-Broad-way” and are often more unusual than the Broadway shows. As well as manytheaters, New York has a famous opera house. This is the Metropolitan, where international stars sing from September until April. Carnegie Hall is the city’s more popular concert hall. But night life in New York offers more than classical music and theater. There are hundreds of nightclubs where people go to eat and dance.1. Paragraph 3______2. Paragraph 4______3. With the development of electronic publishing, many medical journals now have Web sites on the Internet, and some journals publish only online. A few medical journals, like the Journal of the American Medical Association, are considered general medical journals because they cover many fields of medicine. Most medicaljournals are specialty journals that focus on a particular area of medicine.Medical journals publish many types of articles. Research articles report the results of research studies on a range of topics varying from the basic mechanisms of diseases to clinical trials that compare outcomes of different treatments. Review articles summarize and analyze the information available on a specific topic based on a careful search of the medical literature.Because the results of individual research studies can be affected by many factors, combining results from different studies on the same topic can be helpful in reaching conclusions about the scientific evidence for preventing, diagnosing or treating a particular disease. Case conferences and case reports may be published in medical journals to educate physicians about particular illnesses and how to treat at them. Editorials in medical journals are short essays that express the views of the authors, often regarding a research or review article published in the same issue.Editorials provide perspective on how the current article fits with other information on the same topic. Letters to the editor provide a way for readers of the medical journal to express comments, questions or criticisms about articles published in that journal.1. Ford has now announced it will do the same.Three years ago, the company introduced the Think City two-seater car and a golf cart called the THINK, or Think Neighbor. It hoped to sell 5,000 cars each year and 10,000 carts. But a lack of demand means only about l,000 of the cars have been produced, and less than 1,700 carts have been sold so far in 2002.“The bottom line is we don’t believe that this is the future of environment transport for the mass market.”Tim Holmes of Ford Europe said on Friday,“We feel we have given electric our best shot.”The Think City has a range of only about 53 miles and up to a six-hour battery recharge time. General Motors’EVI electric vehicle also had a limited range of about 100 miles. The very expensive batteries also mean electric cars cost much more than petrol-powered alternatives. An electric Toyota RAV4 EV vehicle costs over $42,000 in the US, compared with just $17,000 for the petrol version. Toyota and Nissan are now the only major auto manufacturers to produce electric vehicles.“There is a feeling that battery electric ha s been given its chance. Ford now has to move on with its hybrid program, and that is what we will be judging them on,”Roger Higman, a senior transport campaigner at UK Friends of the Earth, told the Environment News Service.Hybrid cars introduced by Toyota and Honda in the past few years have sold well. Hybrid engines Offer Greater mileage than petrol-only engines, and the batteries recharge themselves. Ford says it thinks such vehicles will help it meet planned new guidelines“on vehicle emissions” in the US.However, it is not yet clear exactly what those guidelines will permit. In June, General Motors and Daimler Chrysler won a court injunction, delaying by two years Californian legislation requiring car-makers to offer 100,000 zero-emission and other low-emission vehicles in the state by 2003. Car manufacturers hope the legislation will be rewritten to allow for morelow-emission, rather than zero-emission, vehicles.1. Which auto manufacturers are still producing electric vehicles?A)Toyota and NissanB)General Motor’s and HondaC)Ford and ToyotaD)Honda and Toyota4. According to the eighth paragraph, hybrid carsA)offer fewer mileage than petrol driven cars.B)run faster than petrol driven cars.C)run more miles than petrol driven cars.D)offer more batteries than petrol driven cars.5.
People buy cell phones for the following reasons Except that(2011 A级阅读题目)A. they're popularB. they're usefulC. they're cheapD. they're convenient原文:段1:In many places it is actually considered unusual not to use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people.段2:Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies.【ET指点】这道题就是典型的明星脸式的考点,我们采用对对碰式的方式可以完全解题。
At the starting stage, the EOL will get information from____(2011理工B33题)A. all the Web sites avaliableB. databases built up by its creators.C. nonscientists with specialized knowledgeD. the existing scientific databases.原文:To get the encyclopedia started, the creators will use information from scientific databases thatalready exist.【ET指点】这道题的藤就是横线前的from,按照我们之前讲的弥补成分的方式,from后面的scientific database 就是答案,和D选项最为接近。
The difficulty of producing the “smell of money” lies in that?A. people‟s attitudes toward money are different.B. it‟s hard to identify and analyze it.C. no technology can do it.D. experts have no motive.原文:But before a smell can be manufactured and introduced into bank's air conditioning systems,it must be identified and chemically analyzed, and this has proved to be difficult.【ET指点】这道题就是典型的蛛丝马迹式的考点,我们用identify和analyze进行回归,很快的就可以看到B选项同时含有identify 和analyze,那么答案自然也就出来了,为B选项。
1】1. When Mr.Kazi was young, his dreams was toA. sell carsB. own a restaurantC. be an airplane pilotD. because a good cook原文:Have you ever wondered why some people are successful in business and others are not? Here's a story about one successful businessperson. He started out washing dishes and today he owns 168 restaurants.Zubair Kazi was born in Bhatkal, a small town in southwest India. His dream was to be an airplane pilot, and when he was 16 years old, he learned to fly a small plane. At the age of 23 and with just a little money in his pocket, Mr. Kazi moved to the United States. He hoped to get a job in the airplane industry in California. Instead, he ended up working for a company that rented cars. While Mr. Kazi was working at the car rental(租赁的) company, he frequently ate at a nearby KFC【解题思路】这道题就是典型的顺藤摸瓜式的考点,这道题的藤是介词to,我们可以根据信息词his dream 很快的就回到原文第二段,也就是His dream was to be an airplane pilot,be an airplane pilot原文已经明确出了答案,本题自然选择C选项。
2. Why did Mr.Kazi decided to work with KFC?A. Because he wants to save money on food.B. Because he wants to learn how to cook.C. Because he wants to save money for a car.D. Because he wants to learn how to run a restaurant.原文:While Mr. Kazi was working at the car rental(租赁的) company, he frequently ate at a nearby KFC restaurant. To save money on food, he decided to get a job with KFC. For two months, he worked as cook's assistant. His job was to clean the kitchen and help to cook. "I didn't like it," Mr. Kazi says, "but I always did the best I could."One day, Mr. Kazi's two co-workers failed to come to work. That day, Mr. Kazi did the work of all three people in the kitchen. This really impressed the owners of the restaurant. A few months later, the owners needed a manager for a few restaurant. They gave the job to Mr. Kazi. He worked hard as the manager and soon the restaurant was making a profit.【解题思路】这道题就是典型的明星脸式的题目了,我们利用KFC作为信息词可以很快的找到信息在第一段的第一句和第二句,原文中To save money on food, he decided to get a job with KFC.
