第二部分:阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,满分50分)

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。

( A )

When a couple decide to marry, they naturally inform both sets of parents or stepparents before having a party planned or telling all their friends. The days are long gone of the man going trembling to the girl’s father and saying, “ Sir, may I have the honor of having the hand of your daughter in marriage?” However, a wise couple always discuss their plans for marriage with their respective families, and a you ng man often suggests a “financial talk” with his future father-in-law before the latter is faced with the embarrassment of asking for one.Even if a young woman has supported herself and lives away from home, her parents have the right to know how her fiancé

proposes to handle the long-range financing of their family and home. The fiancé should state his income, his savings, and his failure expectations, without overstating any of them.Engagement parties are given by the parents of the bride-to-be or by a relative of the bride acting for her parents, usually just before the newspaper announcement of the engagement. If the bride-to-be and her fiancé live in a city other than her parents, it is better for her parents to go to the city than her to go home to them for the engagement party. She and her fiancé will, after all, be partied in her parents’ hometown during the wedding festivities. However, if the family home is not far away, it is proper for the engaged couple to travel there for the announcement party. The young man’s family should be invited, too.If the bride’s parents are no longer living, then a relative or a close friend can give the party. It is usually a simple cocktail’s party, champagne served for toasts to the engaged couple.

If the party is very large, the engaged couple and the girl’s parents might form a receiving line---- but they do not have to.The bride-to-be usually wears her engagement ring officially for the first time on this occasion. If she has a gift for the groom-to-be, she gives it to him right before or after the engagement party.

For Americans, the traditional engagement ring is a diamond solitaire (单粒宝石).However, today anything goes---- a ring with many colored stones, a ring with a large semiprecious stone, an heirloom(传家宝)ring reset in a modern design, or even a stone in the bride’s family, simply reset in a Tiffany setting. The wedding ring will be of the same metal as the engagement ring. Some girls prefer no engagement ring but choose a wedding band that is decorated with stones instead. No one has to have an engagement ring.A girl may want her fiancé to give her a pearl necklace instead, or a jeweled watch.Jeweled rings can be given as gifts on many occasions during the married lives---- such as wedding anniversaries, the birth of a child, or an important job promotion .

41.According to the first paragraph, young men _________________.

A.must tell all their friends before planning a party

B.used to feel afraid of going to meet their girl friends’ parents

C.must promise that their family could support them

D.must guarantee they live away from home already

42.The underlined word “one” in the first paragraph most prob ably means ______________.A.a marriage B.a plan

C.a financial talk D.an embarrassment

43.Which of the following statements does NOT agree with the passage?

A.The bride-to-be and her fiancé will have to wait in line with both of their parents.

B.If the girl’s parents are dead, a relative or a close friend gives a party on their behalf.C.The engagement party is usually given before the newspaper announcement.

D.It’s no longer necessary to give a diamond solitaire as the engagement ring.

44.We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.

A.a young man can give his wife a jeweled watch on the birthday of their child

B.the heirloom must be reset in a modern design

C.the engagement ring and the wedding ring are different

D.some girls don’t mind what they are given for the engagement

( B )

“Who questions much, shall learn much, and remember much.”----Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

It seems obvious now how we acquire knowledge and understanding. To start with, you need questions. Then, to find answers, you observe the world around you and study the facts. After that you consider possible answers and test each to find the right ones.Although today we are more accustomed to typing a few key words into a search engine and waiting for the Internet to spit the answer out for us, modern scientists and thinkers are still solving the world’s problems with this type of analysis -- luckily for us.

However, in the 17th century when Francis Bacon suggested that this type of thinking was the way to gain knowledge, he was going against the views of the day. At that time, people believed more in religion than in facts, and people like Galileo Galilei, who proved scientific ideas such as “ the Earth is not the centre of the universe”, were often punished by the church with no one coming to their defense. The church and many people tended to ignore the facts and were unwilling to challenge what they had always comfortably believed. They preferred to make assumptions about the world based on the experience of others. In fact, when Galilei proved that the Earth was not the centre of the universe, instead of believing him, people chose to believe ancient views put forward by the great philosopher Aristotle (384-322BC).

This also shows how people didn’t want to search for thei r own understanding or educate themselves. And this is still often true today.People feel that if someone important and respected says that something is right, then it must be so.But even though Aristotle was a great man who inspired many great scientists and philosophers after him, he was wrong at times. And Galilei too made mistakes. He is now known as the father of astronomy but he believed that the earth moved round the sun in a perfect circle. He was wrong. Therefore our understanding of the world around us is constantly growing and changing. In other words, we learn more every day and none of us can ever sit back and say “We know it all.”

We need to thank the great men of the past for the wisdom to know that we don’t know it all and probably never will, for that would mean a world without questions. So much of our knowledge and understanding of the world today is due to people like Bacon and Galilei, who were brave enough to step out from the shadows of old thoughts in order to find the kingdom of knowledge t hat today’s civilization is built upon. These men knew that knowledge and understanding are things to fight for; more vital to a man, and more beneficial to mankind, som e might say, than all the money in the world.

“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the poin t is to discover them.”----Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

45.In Bacon and Galileo’s times, people would prefer to ________.

A.learn new things by observing the world around themselves

B.acquire knowledge from church or experience of great ancestors

C.seek answers to their puzzles from contemporary scientists

D.explore knowledge out of facts they saw with their own eyes

46.In this passage Bacon and Galileo are mentioned as examples for ________.A.their great achievements in science

B.their ambition to doubt great ancestors

C.theirrevolutionary way of acquiring knowledge

D.their preference to believe in themselves rather than others

47.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To help the readers learn more about great thinkers in history.

B.To convince the readers of the importance of thinking and discovering.

C.To persuade the readers to thank the great men of the past for their wisdom.

D.To encourage the readers to go against the views of their day.

48.Which of the following is the process the writer suggests to acquire knowledge?

A.asking questions→searching the Internet→ waiting the results→ finding answers

B.acquiring knowledge and understanding→ asking questions→ answering question

C.observing the world→ asking questions→ studying facts→ finding answers→ considering possibili ties

D.asking questions→ observing the world→ studying facts→ considering possibilities→ testing and finding answers

The night was soft and warm as I lay on our living-room sofa, gazing at the ceiling. I was thinking of the hospital. We had gone there that afternoon to visit my father for Valentine’s Day. Daddy was in a high bed that was folded in half some way. He looked alright to me. I didn’t know why he kept going to that place anyway.

I sat as quietly as possible. My trouble was that I wanted to hug him and I was afraid of what Mama would say if I climbed up on his bed to do it. I didn’t know why she would mind—I only knew she would. Sometimes she said I was too rough. But I was such a little girl and Daddy was so big…how could I hurt him?I thought there must be some other reasons why he couldn’t play with me like he used to. Maybe he was too tired.

My parents talked for a long time while I 1ooked out of the window and played with my brother and sister. I didn’t like that place and I wanted to go. There didn’t seem to be anything to do there. Then, all at once,we were leaving. Daddy called me to his bedside and told me to be sure to say my prayers. I said I would and kissed him quickly on the cheek. Then I was glad to leave that building. The people in there were sick…except,of course,my Daddy. He was not sick at a11.

As I settled comfortably into the depths of the sofa, deep in thought. I was startled by the shrill sound of the telephone. That made me angry---now Mama would get up and find I was not sleeping yet. Why did somebody have to call then anyway?

Just as I had suspected,Mama appeared. Mama spoke for only a few minutes, asking questions like “when?” and “how?” She shook me then and told me to go into my own room. I knew it---the telephone call would ruin everything. Then she woke my oldest sister. In a few seconds the whole house was buzzing with some sort of news. “At eleven o’clock.”“…it had to happen sometime…”“…too young to be dead.” I heard these phrases, but I couldn’t put together their meaning.

Mama came then and told me he was dead. My Daddy was dead? No! No! No! It was not

true. He couldn’t be dead. He was alive-he had kissed me only that afternoon. People didn’t die jus t like that! It was not like stepping on a fly…people took years to die…they only died when they were old…very old with gray hair and wrinkles and stooped bodies. Young people don’t die. Not people I knew…not anyone I 1oved.Not my father! He was mine and no one could take my father away from me. He would 1ive forever.

I hated that person who called. It was not true and that was a horrible thing to say. It was not funny. It scared me. Mama believed it,though. She shouldn’t. If she only 1istened to me, I’d tell her the truth…IT ISN’T TRUE…IT ISN’T!

Just wait—next time Daddy came home I’d tell him abo ut the person who called. He’d laugh and say Mama shouldn’t have taken it seriously. After a11, that c ouldn’t happen. He was not even sick.

And do you know what else would happen when Daddy came home the next time? I would jump on his lap and hug him u ntil he couldn’t even breathe! And he wouldn’t mind—because that’s what daddies were for.

( E )

In a natural disaster—a hurricane, flood, volcanic eruption, or other catastrophes—minutes and even seconds of warning can make the difference between life and death.Because of this, scientists are working to use the latest technological advances to predict when and where disas ters will happen. They are also studying how best to analyze and communicate this information once it is obtained.

On September 29, 1998, Hurricane Georges made landfall in Biloxi, Mississippi, after damaging Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and several islands of the Caribbean badly with torrential rains and winds up to 160 km per hour.Few people lost their lives along the Gulf Coast of the United State s, although hundreds died in the Caribbean.

This was a very different outcome from 1900, when a powerful Gulf Coast hurricane made an unexpected direct hit on Galveston, Texas, killing at least 6,000 people.

Vastly improved hurricane warnings explain the different circumstances at either end of the 20th century——residents of Galveston had no advance warning that a storm was approaching,

while residents of Biloxi had been warned days in advance, allowing for extensive safety precautions(预防).

At the same time that people in Biloxi were thankful for the advance warning, some residents of New Orleans, Louisiana were less satisfied.A day before Georges made landfall, forecasters were predicting that the hurricane had a good chance of striking New Orleans.Because much of New Orleans lies below sea level, the city is at risk for flooding.Emergency management officials must begin evacuations(疏散)well before a storm strikes. But evacuation costs money: businesses close, tourists leave, and citizens take precautionary measures. The mayor of New Orleans estimated that his city' s preparations for Georges cost more than 50 million. After Georges missed New Orleans, some residents questioned the value of the hurricane forecasts in the face of such high costs. The different views on the early warnings for Hurricane Georges show some of the complexities related to predicting disasters.Disaster prediction is a process of providing scientific information to the government officials and other decision makers who must respond to those predictions.

57. What is the purpose of disaster prediction according to the passage?

A. To identify the cause of disasters.

B. To save people' s lives and property.

C. To prevent natural disasters from happening,

D. To apply advanced technology to disaster prediction.

59. The city residents of New Orleans were unsatisfied because __ _ .

A. the forecast hurricane did not hit the city

B. the hurricane warning arrived rather late

C. their preparations were made in vain

D. they suffered from a heavy hurricane attack

60. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. The different ways of disaster prediction.

B. Technological advances in disaster prediction.

C. The importance and uncertainty of disaster prediction.

D. The advantages and disadvantages of disaster prediction.

61. ________________________________

I believe honesty is one of the greatest gifts there is. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days, like integrity (正直) and forthrightness (坦率) . But it doesn’t make any difference

what they call it; it’s still what makes a man a good citizen.

62._______________________________

I’ve been in the taxi business for thirty-five years, and I know there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers are rough and rude fellows to be able to take it in New York. You’ve got to be tough to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day these days. Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the wrong impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them are honest fellows. You read in the papers almost every week where a taxi driver turns in money or jewels or things like that people leave in their taxi. If they weren’t honest, you wouldn’t be reading those stories in the papers.

63. _________________________________

One time in Brooklyn, I found a diamond ring in my taxi. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of baggage that day, so I went back to where I had dropped her off. It took me almost two days to track her in order to return her ring. I didn’t get as much as “thank you”. Still, I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she did.

64. ____________________________

I was born and raised in Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years old. After I came to this country I bought my own taxi and have owned one ever since. It hasn’t been too easy times, but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit put away for a rainy day, even in those days. In all my years of driving a taxi, I have never had any trouble with the public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a little troublesome once in a while, I just agree with them and then they behave themselves.

65. ____________________________ People ask me about tips. As far as I know, practically everyone will give you something. Come to think of it, most Americans are pretty generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they tip or not. I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish(教区) . I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the longer I try, the easier it gets.

A huge amount of American children dislike getting advices from members of their family. They turn to “strangers” to help. When they need advice, they don’t usually go to people they know. Instead many of them wrote letters to newspapers and magazine that give advice on many different subjects included family problems, the use of language, healthy, cooking, child care, clothes, and even on how to buy a car. Most newspapers regularly print letters from readers with problems. Along with letters there are answers written by people who are supposed to know what to solve such problems. Some of these writ ers are doctors, others are lawy ers or educators. But surprisingly, two of whom are women without special training for his kind of work.
