They have already opened over 35 stores in Australia and planned to open more in the coming years. The first one opened in Australia was in 1993, September (Toy “R” Us, 2012). They inherits traditional culture elements and combine the innovate spirit in their cooperation to achieve a big success.1.2 Internal supply inside the store and head officeThe six departments‟ description is based on visiting Chatswood store.1.2.1 Six departmentsCustomer service: The customer service department provides service such as products enquires. The products can be returned after staff checking the purchase receipt and if the goods is in saleable condition (Toy “R” Us, 2012).Sales department: The sales department is responsible for sales promotion and assisting customers to make best choice for their needs. For example, if customer wants to buy a gift for a 6-year old boy, sales staff will give the advice and tell the customer where can find it.Manager: The duty of store manager supervising all departments and in-store operations working well. If there are problems that couldn‟t be handled by staff they need to report to store manager who will communicate with customers or head office.IT department: The IT department could collect all the useful information such as sales transactions. The data could help the manager making decisions more efficient and effectivelyLogistic: When customer buys product in larger dimension cannot be taken themself, logistic department can provide delivery service. To reduce the cost of operations, Toys“R”us re-engineered their stores. Employees have training more efficient and friendly; reducing capital waste, provide on-line shopping (Boyer and Verma, 2010).2.2 Consistent QualityThe products of Toys“R”us meet the customers‟ needs with high reliability. Competing with other compactors, Toys“R”us evaluate all the process more careful so that it can reduce the mistakes as little as possible (Casison, 1998). Offering the consistent quality products is basic foundations that leadToys“R”us operate more than 600 internationa l stores and 140 listened stores all over the world (Toys “R” Us, 2012).2.3 On-time DeliveryOn–time delivery at a reasonable cost is very important at today‟s competitive market (Chua, 2006). Toys“R”us provide customers on-time delivery by using multi-mode method such as standard shipping, expedited shipping and express shipping (Toys “R” Us, 2012). Customers can choose the most suitable method depend on their requirement. By on-time delivery, it will create a high reliability for customers (Boyer and Verma, 2010).3. The efficient Supply of Toys“R”us3.1 E-commerceToys“R”us retailer has acquired the e-commerce site from the parent company for a disclosed sum (Tierney, 2009). Inventory can be held in a centralised warehouse and when purchase order is received via internet,packaging and order delivery can be quickly processed at one place and deliver to the customers in a much shorter period of time. Killgallon who is a supporter of e-commerce said, Toys“R”us may have more customer in e-commerce than any other categories (Corral, 1999).3.2 LogisticToys“R”us America has invited international consulting group such as Accenture to help them to innovate and optimise their supply chain in order to reduce inventory cost and improve efficiency and effectiveness of its supply chain process (Accenture). Delivery and product on shelf time has been dramatically decreased from 72 to 24 hours. The inventory related productivity has improved by 20%. Also, the layout of Toys“R”us more likely to be supermarket style, products can be stored on the shelves in the store, the cost of storage room could be saved.3.3 InnovationThe CEO of Toys“R”us, Jerry Storch suggested that the differentiations and innovation will help Toys“R”us achieve more customers in today‟s marketplace. He also said, these innovation activity include growing store experience, expend omnichannel capabilities and differentiate product offering (China Weekly News, 2011).4. The features of the company’s operations4.1 ForecastingToys“R”us focusing on improved the accuracy of forecasting by using visibility systems (Drickhamer, 2005). The goal of Toys“R”us is to achieve a more reasonable forecasting that support their planning. Also, time-series analysis was practices in Toys“R”us supply chain management (Verdon, 2005). Theycollect past demand data to predetermination future demand of their supply so that the quality of forecast can be proved.4.2 Inventory controlToys“R”us has groups of people focusing on expediting late product and to get in-stocks higher than they have ever been and at the meantime reducing the inventory(Drickhamer, 2005). As Toys“R”us core strategy is reducing inventory at store level. As such, the company requires fast response in stock replenishment and therefore logistic department should work closely within the company throughout distribution process.4.3 Niche MarketToys“R”us also targets on niche market and obtain leadership in this niche market. Toys“R”us present itself as the industry leader of distributor and child related products such as toys, nutrition foods and so on.5. How the company relies on supply chain partnersPurchasing team place purchase orders based on forecast demand. Employees who work for inventory control need to decide how many products need to send to every store. Logistic department will deliver the product to local stores and receipt by distribution centre. It is important to deliver to right product to the store at the right time. Because if company supply to products that are not needed by customers, it will cause inventory surplus and could eventually become dead stock. Within the organisation, the sales information should be caught accurately to reflect to demand planning department in order to help to create forecast for future demand.6 .Improvements in the Supply Chain operations 6.1 Children experience areaAs Toys“R”us is selling Children r elated products and therefore there must be many children coming and visiting the store with their parents. However, there are open area for children to have fun in Toys“R”us based on our observation in one of the Toys“R”us store in Chatswood, Sydney. One the advantages of retaining such space for children is letting them stay in store at longer time to extend shopping time and more importantly, it could create opportunities for children to actually experience of having a wonderful toy in store.6.2 Develop home brandWe couldn‟t find the home made brand product from the Toys“R”us store‟s shelves. Although most of the products are made in China or other developing countries, they are all sold under other brands such as Phillips, Lego, etc. From supply chain point view, Toys“R”us is a sole child related products distributor and does not have their own brand. They could develop their home made brand products just like what Woolworths or Coles do in general supermarket industry and compete with other brands to be able to gain lower price competiveness to increase sales.6.3 Safety threatAccording to my observation in store research, there should be improvement in store layout to enhance store safety management. For example, we can easily see steel made stairs leaving in the centre of the corridor without any notice to customers. Because there are lot of children coming to visitToys“R”us, it is critical to prevent them to be hurt in store and therefore the store staff need to pay more attention in safety.
