More than half of the subjects talked in a confused way.B. It takes a lot of effort to convey information clearly.C. People are able to realize the nonsense in their communication.D. The experiments prove that purposeful communication doesn't exist.【答案】【小题1】D 【小题2】C 【小题3】B 【小题4】B【解析】1.D. A conversation in which neither party is listening to the other was classified as a ‘duologue' by Abraham Kaplan,a philosopher who died in 1993.A duologue,he suggested,is more than a monologue but less than a dialogue." The mainstream view of why people communicate is that they are trying to transmit information faithfully." According to Dr Galantucci and Dr Roberts, however, transmitting information efficiently takes a lot of effort and is the exception rather than the rule.In normal conversation ⋅⋅⋅ people are surprisingly deaf to incoherence." But this research certainly adds to the suspicion that even supposedly purposeful communication often isn't. 这进一步证明了第二段的一个观点:transmitting information efficiently takes a lot of effort and is the exception rather than the rule. COne of the most popular English-language novels of the 20th century is almost unknown in the English-speaking world - a global phenomenon in translation, now neglected in its original form. The Gadfly,by Irish writer Ethel Voynich, was sold over 5 million copies in 107 editions in the 22 languages spoken in the Soviet Union. The book inspired seven musical adaptations, five theatre adaptations, and five film adaptations.Voynich's novel is a thrilling account of revolutionary enthusiasm, religious devotion, clerical betrayal and romantic love - the philosopher Bertrand Russell called it "one of the most exciting novels I have read".It was published in New York in 1897,two years after its completion,as its English publisher feared a negative reaction - one reviewer criticized the book's "shocking and horrible character".A translation appeared the following year in Russia, where the tsarist (沙皇)authorities' disapproval only enhanced its popularity. The Gadfly is set in Italy during the revolutionary unrest of the 1830s and 40s.The hero is a young Englishman,Arthur Burton, who moves to a Catholic seminary (神学院)after the death of his mother. There he becomes devoted to his guardian and mentor Montanelli, who, unknown to him,is also his biological father. In the company of his childhood sweetheart Gemma,Arthur becomes involved in the Young Italy movement fighting Austrian imperial rule. But he unconsciously betrays his comrades, after his private confession (忏悔)is relayed to the police. He then discovers his family secret, and loses all faith in the church.Arthur pretends his suicide and escapes to South America, where he endures years of suffering. He returns to Italy in the guise of ‘The Gadfly',a fearless and respected revolutionary whose true identity is masked. After his capture,he is visited by Montanelli, now a cardinal (红衣教主),who offers him a lifeline. But Arthur, unforgiving and uncompromising, demands that his father reject the church.Montanelli refuses and condemns his son to death.Arthur, now a Christ-like figure, commands his own death penalty. At the Corpus Christi mass,Montanelli dies of a broken heart.①.The novel gained popularity initially in Ireland.Yet it was in the newly-created Communist states of the Soviet Union and China that the book found its most dedicated readership.Arthur,a Romantic tragic hero, was repeatedly voted Russia's most popular literary figure, and astronauts Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova, the first man and woman in space, credited its influence.②.In the 1930s,The Gadfly inspired another bestseller.Nikolai Ostrovsky's How the Steel Was Tempered sold 35 million copies in the Soviet Union.Ostrovsky's socialist realist novel features a fearless young communist who suffers dreadfully for his sacrifices, but finds permanent strength in the example of The Gadfly, which he reads to his fellow comrades.Voynich's novel was reinforced further by a 1955 film adaptation directed by Aleksandr Faintsimmer. It sold 39 million tickets.③.Ethel Voynich had been living unknown to the public. And due to Soviet copyright laws, she was unaware of her legendary status in Russia. In 1956,Democratic presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson visited Moscow to arrange for payment of her long-overdue royalties (版权费).When Ethel died in 1960,she was mourned in Russia as a national hero.④.Arthur offers a "careful balance of emotion with steely determination" - he is a lover anda fighter, which can be seen in the ‘knight-errant' (侠客)of traditional Chinese folklore. In the UK,The Gadfly remains out of print and almost unknown, yet around the world readers and writers still revere its author, just as DH Lawrence,Rebecca West and Friedrich Engels once did. With its rich religious imagery and stirring revolutionary themes,The Gadfly has a lasting appeal for lovers of historical fiction, and deserves to be rediscovered in its original language.22.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?______A. The background of the novel.B. Its popularity in the Soviet Union.C. An abnormal phenomenon in translation.D. The artistic achievement of the novel.23.Why does Arthur escape to South America?______A. He fails to fight Austrian imperial rule.B. He can't tolerate his family.C. He doesn't succeed in committing suicide.D. He is to be punished by the police.24.The underlined word "revere" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______ .A. saluteB. pleaseC. imitateD. condemn25.What can we know about the novel The Gadfly from the passage?______A. It has been translated into 22 languages around the world.B. It is unfamiliar to the British due to its horrible characters.C. It receives a negative reaction in the English-speaking world.D. It was completed in 1899 and is one of the most popular novels.26.What makes the novel The Gadfly have the most dedicated readers in the Soviet Union?______A. Nikolai Ostrovsky's novel.B. The fearless and respected hero.C. Musical and theater adaptations.D. Soviet copyright laws.27.Where should the sentence "The Gadfly found its largest audience in China" be put in thepassage?______A. 1B. 2C. 3D. 4【答案】【小题1】B 【小题2】D 【小题3】A 【小题4】C 【小题5】B 【小题6】D【解析】1.B. One of the most popular English-language novels of the 20th century is almost unknown in the English-speaking world - a global phenomenon in translation, now neglected in its original form." But he unconsciously betrays his comrades, after his private confession(忏悔)is relayed to the police." 故选D项.3.A. 故选A项.4.C. It was published inNew York in 1897…as its English publisher feared a negative reaction"可知,这部小说完成两年后才在纽约出版,因为出版商害怕出现负面的反应. He returns to Italy in the guise of ‘The Gadfly',a fearless and respected revolutionary whose true identity is masked." Arthur,a Romantic tragic hero, was repeatedly voted Russia's most popular literary figure"可知,这部小说在苏联受欢迎的原因是其主人公是一个勇敢无畏且受人尊敬的人. 根据倒数第二段中的"…which can be seen in the ‘Knight-errant'(侠客) of traditional Chinese folklore." DWeather is a famously boring conversation starter-until you drop a name like Sandy,Katrina,Juno,or Irene.Even without a hurricane or "snowmageddon" on the horizon, weather reports on channels like CNN have high viewer ratings.Sometimes, the Weather Channel itself beats the rest of the competition. But why are people so fascinated by storms, even when they're nowhere near them? When the weather turns bad,why can't we look away, even after we've gotten the information we need to get through it?We may be addicted to the danger.Humans didn't evolve to be safe,risk-minimizing citizens;because our early experiences involved constantly dangerous conditions,we developed a certain baseline expectation of risk.Even if you stayed inside your camp or your cave, the world was full of unpredictable, potentially dangerous things. And actively taking risks could be rewarded;that might have been the only way to get food.In the modern environment,we aren't exposed to natural risks in the same way.But the underlying neural mechanisms haven't gone anywhere. Some people have a natural bent for high-risk situations. They run extreme races,BASE jump,or invest in changeable stocks. Most of us,though, enjoy a certain thrill without losing our heads. We like roller coasters. We'll ski the black-diamond trail but may not go off track. It's a phenomenon that the sociologist Stephen Lyng calls edgework. We feel like we're living on the edge, but we know that there's a safety net.Edgework is precisely what extreme weather is.A winter storm - or any storm, really - approximates this thrill. It's powerful and even dangerous. But safely settled inside and in front of our computer screens,we don't think it will really hurt us.The power might go out,but then we would be able to share a picture of a car buried in a snowdrift. And then, soon,it will be over. You will have had the thrill, and you might have gained control over it by capturing a moment of "danger," but in all,it seems a relatively minor risk.We satisfy our inner risk seeker without going into dangerous territory. As for the people on the West Coast who followed the winter storm Juno in 2015 as eagerly as any New Yorker or Bostonian, risk can well be experienced vicariously (代理地).We stay glued to forecasts of gloom and doom for the same reason we watch the latest X Games. They capture our attention and emotion. The media know this all too well. There is one major exception:those who have suffered an extreme weather catastrophe in the past.We learn differently from description than from experience. If you were in arecord-breaking storm in the past and nothing bad happened, you will likely dismiss thecurrent danger. But if you experienced a major loss-the destruction of a house, say,or a multiweek-long loss of power-you likely won't do much rubbernecking this time.Unlike everyone else, you realize the danger probably isn't worth massive media coverage.28.Which of the following is true about edgework mentioned in the passage?______A. People won't take any risk without consideration.B. Taking risks has been a type of lifestyle in people's life.C. People tend to expect the arrival of extreme weather.D. Facing danger can satisfy people's inner desire for risk.29.What can be inferred from the passage?______A. Evolution of human beings weakens people's awareness of taking risks.B. People who once suffered from storms show less curiosity about them.C. The contents from the media lead to people being addicted to the danger.D. People on the West Coast with New Yorkers went through the winter storm Juno.30.What is the best title for the passage?______A. Why we love super-stormsB. How extreme weather influences our lifeC. Why people like taking riskD. How we deal with weather forecast【答案】【小题1】A 【小题2】B 【小题3】A【解析】1-3 ABA1.A. In the modern environment,we aren't exposed to natural risks in the same way.But the underlying neural mechanisms haven't gone anywhere"可知不经过考虑,人们是不会冒任何风险的.故选A.2.B. But if you experienced a major loss-the destruction of a house, say,or a multiweek-long loss of power-you likely won't do much rubbernecking this time.Unlike everyone else, you realize the danger probably isn't worth massive media coverage." 故选B.3.A. But why are people so fascinated by storms, even when they're nowhere near them? When the weather turns bad,why can't we look away, even after we've gotten the information we need to get through it?" 故选A. 三、任务型阅读(本大题共1小题,共10.0分)31.We all know what makes for good character in soldiers. We've seen the movies aboutheroes who display courage, loyalty and coolness under fire. But what about somebody who sits in front of a keyboard all day?Is it possible to display and cultivate character if you are just an information age office clerk, alone with a memo or your computer?Of course it is.Even if you are alone in your office, you are thinking.Thinking well under an era of information may be a different sort of moral challenge than fighting well under a hail of bullets, but it's a character challenge nonetheless. In their book,Intellectual Virtues,Robert C.Roberts of Baylor University and W.Jay Wood of Wheaton College。
