题组层级快练(六)Ⅰ. 阅读理解(2019·河北衡水质量检测)Over a hundred years ago in 1911, something strange was found in the glaciers of Antarctica. Crilffith Taylor —an Australian geologist, had discovered a blood red stream pouring out of the ice cascades (瀑布)of Talor Glacier! Popularly known as the Blood Falls, scientists had not been able to find the reason behind the blood red liquid flowing through the ice—until recently. The mystery of the Blood Falls had finally been solved. When these falls were first discovered, scientists had believed that the red colour came from a large amount of red algae(海藻)concentrated in the water. Red algae contain a pigment(色素)which reflects red light, making the algae appear red. This theory made sense, until it was later found that algae do not play a part in the red color of the flowing liquid at all. What really causes Talor Glacier's waters appear blood red, is the presence of iron oxide in the liquid. The waters of the blood falls are rich in salt and iron content, and when this water comes in contact with the air, it turns red—just like rust! The water in these falls is often referred to as “brine” by scientists because of the high salt content in the water. This reasoning behind the red colors of the falls was found back in2003. However, the entire mystery had not yet been solved. How is it then, that the Blood Falls are not frozen?Researchers at the University of Colorado and University of Alaska found that inside the glacier, there was a network of channels and reservoirs that move the water around. Salt water has a lower freezing temperature. In addition, when any substance undergoes a change in state, it gives off heat. Therefore, the brine actually warm itself up while it's freezing! How this works, is that when the brine is flowing through the Talor Glacier, some of it does freeze. As a result of changing state from liquid to ice, the brine gives off heat. This heat is enough to keep the rest of the brine in liquid form, which is why it flows out of the glacier.Incredible new chemistry facts found, and mystery solved!1. According to the text, the red algae theory was once considered ________.A. ridiculousB. reasonableC. impracticalD. complex2. Why does the Blood Falls look red in colour?A. Because there is too much salt and iron in its water.B. Because its liquid is rich in red algae.C. Because the flowing liquid reflects red sunlightD. Because the air is thin and rare in Antarctica.3. What is the main reason for the Blood Falls' not freezing?A. The water continued flowing constantly.B. There is too much salt in the water.C. The brine gives off heat while freezingD. Temperatures aren't high enough for flowing water.4. What is the passage mainly about?A. The discovery of the blood glacier.B. The birth of the Talor Glacier.C. The flowing red water in Antarctica.D. The mystery of the Blood Falls.答案与解析【文章大意】一百多年前的1911年澳大利亚地质学家在南极洲的冰川中发现了一些奇怪的东西——血瀑布。
题组层级快练(十)Ⅰ. 阅读理解(2019·东北三省模拟)Spending money on time-saving services reduces stress and boosts(增进)happiness, according to a new research, but shockingly, few of us do it.Whillans, a professor at HBS said, “Buying time helps to protect us from the stress in our lives caused by time pressure, and the feeling that we don't have enough minutes in the day to complete our tasks.”The effect was clearest in the Canadian experiment, in which 60 working adults were given $40 to spend in two different ways. One weekend, they were told to spend the money on a material purchase—a gift for themselves. The next weekend, they were instructed to spend the $40 on anything that saved them time, from paying the neighbor's kid to run errands(跑腿)to taking an Uber instead of a bus.“On the day they made the time-saving purchase, they felt happier, in a better mood, and lower feelings of time stress than on the day they bought a material purchase,”said Whillans. The biggest surprise to the researchers was how few people would spend money on time-saving services. When they asked 98 working adults how they would spend a “windfall” of $40, only two percent named a purchase that would save them time.“One reason,”said Whillans, “is that we're very bad at remembering how much we hate doing certain tasks once the suffering has passed. That makes us less likely to take active steps to avoid thatoverburdened feeling in the future.” But another possible cause is good old-fashioned guilt. “If you feel guilty about getting someone to clean your house for you, then you might get less happiness from outsourcing(外包)that task,”said Whillans, “or you might just be less likely to spend your money in that way.”1. In the Canadian experiment, the participants ________.A. were divided into two groupsB. were given $ 40 every two weeksC. were asked to give money to a neighbor's kidD. were asked to spend the money in different ways2. According to the author, what can make people less time-stressed?A. Paying much for a concert ticket.B. Taking a regular bus to get to work.C. Employing someone to clean the garden.D. Buying themselves an expensive present.3. When it comes to spending money on “buying time”,________.A. no people would like to do itB. a small percentage of people choose to do itC. more people will do it if extra money is givenD. most people like the idea but don't practice it in life4. What do the underlined words “that overburdened feeling” in Paragraph 6 refer to?A. The good old-fashioned guilt.B. The feeling of spending money on goods.C. The stress of having someone clean your house.D. The discomfort when completing tasks we hate doing.答案与解析【文章大意】本文讲述了如何解决时间不足的问题并且提升快乐。

题组层级快练(十一)Ⅰ. 阅读理解(2019·安徽省高三上学期考试)Have you ever wondered when dogs first became “man's best friend” and the world's favourite pet? If you have, then you're not alone. When and where dogs first began living side by side with humans are questions that have stirred hot debate among scientists. There are a few hard facts that all agree on. These include that dogs were once wolves and they were the first animal to be domesticated(驯养) by humans. They came into human lives some 15,000 years ago, before the dawn of agriculture.Beyond that, there is little agreement. The earliest bones found that are unquestionable dogs' and not wolves' date from 14,000 years ago. However, 30,000yearold skulls have been discovered in France and Belgium that are not pure wolves' and some scientists think could be dogs'.With such puzzling evidence, many scientists are now turning to DNA to find out when and where dogs were first domesticated. In one research project, tens of thousands of blood samples have been taken from street dogs around the world. The plan is to compare them with those of wolves. It's even possible to analyse DNA from ancient bones. Tiny pieces of the 30,000yearold skulls mentioned earlier are currently being studied, and another DNA study has already shown that ancientdogs preserved in the Alaskan ice fields evolved from Asian wolves, not American ones.Indeed, the ancient DNA may turn out to be more informative than the DNA of living dogs. Because dogs have accompanied humans around the world for thousands of years, their current distribution may tell us very little of their origins. This is why different groups of scientists believe that dogs variously originated in eastern Asia, Mongolia, Siberia, Europe or Africa. But why were the animals domesticated in the first place? The most recent theory is that dogs domesticated themselves, initially living in and around our ancient villages to eat any food thrown out. Today, this is a way of life still shared by three quarters of a billion unowned dogs worldwide.1. Which is the only statement generally agreed on by scientists studying dogs?A. Dogs originally were used as farm animals.B. Dogs evolved from wolves found in Europe.C. Dogs helped the development of agriculture.D. Dogs were the first animals to be kept as pets.2. Why does the writer first mention the 30, 000yearold animals' skulls?A. To show that dogs were much larger in the past.B. To prove that dogs developed from Asian wolves.C. To suggest that dogs may have evolved much earlier.D. To argue that dogs were first kept in France and Belgium.3. How did scientists determine the origins of the ancient dogs found in Alaska?A. By analyzing the age of their bones.B. By examining the animals' DNA.C. By studying the shape of their skulls.D. By comparing them with modern dogs.4. Why did dogs start living with humans?A. Because they were attracted by food.B. Because they were trapped by humans.C. Because they couldn't survive in the wild.D. Because they were trained to protect villages.答案与解析【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。
