The relationship between religion and scienceWestern countries experienced several stages of religion.In the initial stage, people believed in polytheism. They believed that each thing was controlled by each god, for example, mountains were controlled by god of mountain; sun was controlled by god of sun; affection was controlled by god of love,etc. Of all the gods, they believed sun-god was the greatest god, but not the unique one.Then, Abraham insisted that there must be only one god, it must be he that created the world and made the world work. Later, Moses’s the ten commandments marked that Judaism was built. People gradually believed in one god-----God.However, at last ,Judaism served the powers, ignoring misery of the masses. At the same time, Christianism gradually formed. At first , Christianism appeared for saving the masses. Therefore, Jesus was believed in by many people, so as to the powers felt the threat from Christianism and Jesus. In this period , Christians were persecuted seriously. Many years later, Christianism added the doctrine of obedience and endurance into their dogma.As is known to all of us, obedience and endurance makes the domination become easier. Hence, Christianism become the State Religion. Roman empire was so vast that there appeared different cultures which caused the division of Christianism. In eastern Rome, Greece culture heavily influenced its religion, at the same time, in western Rome, its religion was influenced by Germanic culture.At last, Christianism divided into two parts: Orthodox in the eastern; Catholicism in the western. Their religious opinions confronted with each other, at last burst into a brutal religious war.In the end, religious tolerance and religious reformation ended the calamity and corruption to some extent. Till now, people can choose whatever to believe in .With the development of religion, science also experienced several stages. In the initial stage, people had no conception of science, all things happened because god made them happen. Then several scientists found out the objective laws of nature , they started to doubted the existence of god. In initial stage, people found some scientific methods and truth when they were studying religion and God. In the second stage, scientists doubted Gods ,and were persecuted by religious powers. In this period, science was science ,religion was religion, they were different parts of our life. They developed themselves respectively. Till now, we are more tolerant about the relationship between science and religion.In my opinion, religion is some kind of ultimate concern and belief,which gives human beings strength, makes human beings feel the inner peace. All the religious rites and doctrines are used to strengthen this concern and belief. Therefore, rites and doctrines are of no importance in fact,sometimes, rites and doctrines makes religious followers become cat’s paw . Gradually , if religion is an ultimate belief without rites and doctrines, i think i also have religious faith. I never go church, never believe in the saving of God, and never finish the reading of Bible. However, I believe that there is some kind of ultimate power, it is this power that dominates the whole world. This power is not God, i think it is more approximate to Chinese old philosophy concept of Laozi-------Dao. Maybe we can call it “necessity”, in this world, all the contingencies are of necessity. It is this power that makes what we are now, what the whole world is now. The whole world (including religion and science ) is dominated by this ultimate power, in this situation, we can be more tolerant about the relationship between religion and science. To some degree, science changes the external environment, religion changes the internal circumstance.。
