ABeijing an astronaut sounds cool, doesn’t it? In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity. However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can’t do because of their weightless environment, and that’s very sad. What’s worse, they can’t even let their sadness show –because it’s impossible to cry in zero gravity.Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January. Without gravity, tears don’t flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your te ars have nowhere to go – they just stick to your eyes.In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced t his during one of his spacewalks. ―Tears,‖ he said, ―don’t fall off of your eye... They just kind of stay there.‖Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But tha t’s not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts’ eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. ―My right eye is painful like crazy.‖ Feustel told his teammate during the walk.Since gravity doesn’t work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears. Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait –―When the tears get big enough they simply break free of the eye and float ar ound,‖ astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic. There are lots of small things – things like crying – that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astro nauts can’t talk to each other directly. They also can’t eat or drink in normal ways. They can’t even burp (打嗝), because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up (呕吐) everything in their stomach, according to the UK National Space Center. Thus, perhaps it’s only space explorers who can honestly say: ―Gravity, you’re the best.‖1. What can we conclude from paragraphs 2 and 3?A. Astronauts are unable to feel sad in space.B. Astronauts produce fewer tears in space.C. Tears produced in space flow down more slowly.D. Tears produced in space don’t flow downward.2. What effect do tears have on astronauts?A. They cause physical pain.B. They bring comfort to them.C. They make their vision clearer.D. They float around and cause trouble.3. What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears?A. Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward.B. Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around.C. Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes.D. Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes.4. What’s the second-to-last paragraph mainly about?A. Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space.B. Other basic things that are difficult to do in space.C. Why burping is impossible in space.D. Things that humans can’t do without gravity.BIf you want to find a parttime job or learn something different during your spare time, you can have a look at the following jobs offered by the DC Public Library.Teens of Distinction ProgramThe DC Public Library offers parttime jobs for teens through the Teens of Distinction Program. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: ―I may have lost, but it doesn't matt er because I really didn't try.‖ What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.9. The underlined phrase ―the most vocal‖ in Paragraph 3 means ________.A. those who try their best to winB. those who value competition most highlyC. those who are against competition most stronglyD. those who rely on others most for success10. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a ―desire to fail‖?A. One's worth lies in his performance compared with others'.B. One's success in competition needs great efforts.C. One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.D. One's success is based on how hard he has tried.11. Which point of view may the author agree to?A. Every effort should be paid back.B. Competition should be encouraged.C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.DConventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves longterm scars on children’s bodies, but also chan ges their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature(早熟)aging.Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres(端粒), says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.Telomeres are special DNA sequences which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation(放射)and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person. In this study, researchers examined whether exposure(暴露)to violence could make children’s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying(恶霸). Researchers measured the children’s telomeres—in cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeks—at ages 5 and 10.Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says. The study confirms a smallbutgrowing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.12. The new study found that ________.A. hardship has a longterm effect on a child’s mindB. violence leaves scars on a child’s mindC. violence can speed up a child’s agingD. hardship can change a child’s aging13. According to the text, telomeres ________.A. are at the ends of people’s chromosomesB. can help prevent DNA from separatingC. can make a cell die quicklyD. become shorter before they die14. All of the following things can shorten telomeres EXCEPT ________.A. maltreatmentB. cell divisionC. smokingD. doing exercise15. What is the best title for the text?A. Violence Aging Children’s DNAB. Children’s Changing DNA PatternsC. Violence and TelomeresD. The Function of Telomeres第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

took a rare family road trip to the Adirondacks in late August, and it was as refreshing and exhausting as family vacations tend to be.Toward the end of our long drive home, even the kids were leaning forward in their seats urging my lead foot on.At that point in a road trip, even sixty-five miles per hour feels slow.We have become numb to our speed and numb to the road signs flashing by.My family lives on the edge of Lancaster County.Only thirty miles from home,I hit the brakes, and we began to roll, slowly, behind a horse-drawn carriage. We began to open our eyes again. We saw familiar green hills and the farm with the best watermelons.I rolled down the windows, and we breathed again.Just-cut hay and a barn full of dairy cattle. At five miles per hour, you remember what you forget at sixty-five.You are thinking about a place, even when you are moving from place to place.I am a placemaker.A homemaker, too.I am a mother of a young kid at home, and also a writer and a gardener. But,for me,those roles are wrapped up with the one big thing I want to do with the rest of my life:I want to cultivate a place and share it with others. The place I make with my family is a red-brick farmhouse built in l880.It has quite a few nineteenth-century bedrooms and a few acres of land, and we love nothing more than to fill them with neighbors and friends. We grow vegetables and flowers, keep a baker's dozen of egg-laying chickens, and, since we moved in three years ago,we have planted many, manytrees.Living with my life's purpose does not allow for much travel.I need to be here, feeding the chickens and watering the tomatoes.Any extra in the budget, and we spend it on trees. But I learned something at the end of our family road trip.Travel can help me in the task of caring for my own place. When I can stay young forever. That is the message Dr.Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging. His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.Dr.Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And,he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called"shen".According to Shen,it is the kidney which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through.Studies conducted by Dr.Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper. We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells.These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas.Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves. So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extraT-cells.But,is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young? This is where Dr.Shen's herbal medicine comes in.But how effective it will be,only time can tell.9.How did Dr.Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?______A.By studying Western medicine.B.By learning traditional Chinese medicine.C.By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.D.By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.10.What plays the most important most schools,"going green"means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle. But at New York's Riverdale Country School,it means being encouraged to run and even jump in the hallway. That's because the school was the first to install (安装)the specially-designed Pavegen floor tiles (地砖)in America. The tiles use kinetic energy (动能)expanded by the kids and transform it into electricity that can be used to power classroom lights, science projects and charge electronic devices. The first US installation of Pavegen tiles near the school's student center is thanks to 14-year-old Zach Halem, who managed to convince the officials to purchase them.Besides providing fun green energy, the tiles also serve as a learning tool.Every time a student steps on one,a brightly-lit LED board provides instant feedback (反馈信息)on how much energy was generated.Depending on the force, every step results in between one to seven watts-enough power to light an LED street lamp for about 30seconds.Made largely from rubber and other recycled materials the tiles are invented by the26-year-old British industrial designer Laurence Kembell-Cook.While new to the US,they have been installed in numerous places in Europe, ranging from a London underground station to a marathon track in Paris. However,it was not until Pavegen started getting popular in London schools that Laurence realized that his invention not only saved energy, but was also fun!Though the young inventor will not give too many details about the technology behind this green tile,he says that it is very different from other kinetic energy harvesting systems.Whatever the secret, let's hope more US schools decide to install these fun tiles. In fact, why stop at schools? These tiles could be installed everywhere, from sidewalks to homes. Then we could all be"green"and have fun!Who knew that was even possible?13.What can we learn from the first paragraph?______A.American students are encouraged to run and jump as much as possible.B."Going green"means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle.C.New York's Riverdale Country School took a different way to go green.D.New York's Riverdale Country School is the first US school to try new ways to go green.14.Which of the following statements is TRUE about Laurence Kembell-Cook?______A.His original motive to invent the Pavegen tiles was to save energy.B.He believed his invention would be popular with students.C.He keeps all the technology behind this green tile a secret.D.He persuaded the school to install Pavegen tiles.15.Which part of a website is the freelances(做自由职业)knows, there are lots of advantages of working at home alone. But there are drawbacks too, like the potential loneliness. No wonder co-working spaces are becoming so popular:they permit self-employed individuals to feel like they are part of all office environment, while making them get some work done too.But renting a co-working space does cost money. Now a Swedish proiect is aiming to change that by turning people’s under-used homes into temporary co-working spaces, available to freelancers for free.Hoffice was started by freelancers Christofer Gradin Franzen and Johline Zandra about a year ago in Stockholm when they invited a few people into their home office to work together. It was a great success, and the project has since spread to a number of cities in Europe,North and South America,Australia,India and Japan.Anyone can sign up and offer their home space as a free co-working space,or go find a Hoffice near them.On a Hoffice day, everyone arrives and starts work at a 第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)ANo one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize, or focus, on doing one specific job.Let’s take a man we’ll call Mr. Fielder, for example. He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time, he did many other jobs on the farm. However, he didn’t make the bricks for his house, cut his trees into boards, make the plows (犁), or any of other hundreds of things a farm needs. Instead, he got them from people who specialized in doing each of those things.Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr. Plowright. Using what he knew about farming and working with iron, Mr. Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier. Mr. Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialize in making really good plows. Perhaps, he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows. How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing? Why, he advertised, of course. First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door. It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr. Plowright and his really good plows. Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.A medium, in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the firstmedium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people’s attention.A crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercia l in today’s world. (478 words)1. What probably led to the start of advertisement?A. The discovery of iron.B. The specialization of labor.C. The appearance of new jobs.D. The development of farming techniques.2. The last two paragraphs are mainly about __________.A. the history of advertisingB. the benefits of advertisingC. the early forms of advertisingD. the basic design of advertisingBIt happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, ―a brilliantly (精彩地)written book‖. However, he then went onto talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s ―Report on Guilty Secrets‖, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dick ens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville.Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to ―impress‖ someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in–depth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).6. How did the author find his friend a book liar?A. By judging his manner of speaking.B. By looking into his background.C. By mentioning a famous name.D. By discussing the book itself.7. Which of the following is a ―guilty secret‖ according to the World Book Day report?A. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list.B. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984.C. The author admitted having read 9 books.D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.8. By lying about reading, a person hopes to .A. control the conversationB. appear knowledgeableC. learn about the bookD. make more friends9. What is the author’s attitude to 58% of readers?A. Favorable.B. UncaringC. DoubtfulD. FriendlyCWe’ve considered several ways of paying to cut inline: hiring line standers, buying tickets from scalpers (票贩子), or purchasing line cutting privileges directly from, say, an airline or an amusement park. Each of these deals replaces the morals of the queue (waiting your turn) with the morals of the market (paying a price for faster service).Markets and queues—paying and waiting—are two different ways of allocating things, and each is appropriate to different activities. The morals of the queue, ―First come, first served,‖ have an egalitarian(平等主义的) appeal. They tell us to ignore privilege, power, and deep pockets. The principle seems right on play grounds and at bus stops. But the morals of the queue do not govern all occasions. If I put my house up for sale, I have no duty to accept the first offer that comes along, simply because it’s the first. Selling my house and waiting for a bus are different activities, properly governed b y different standards.Sometimes standards change, and it is unclear which principle should apply. Think of the recorded message you hear, played over and over, as you wait on hold when calling your bank: ―Your call will be answered in the order in which i t was received.‖ This is essential for the morals of the queue. It’s as if the company is trying to ease our impatience with fairness. But don’t take the recorded message too seriously. Today, some people’s calls are answered faster than others. Call c enter technology enables companies to―score‖ incoming call sand to give faster service to those that come from rich places. You might call this telephonic queue jumping.Of course, markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things. Some goods we distribute by merit, others by need, still others by chance. However, the tendency of markets to replace queues, and other non-marketways of allocating goods is so common in modern life that we scarcelynotice it anymore. It is striking that most of the paid queue-jumpingschemes we’ve considered—at airports and amusement parks, in call centers, doctors offices, and national parks—are recent developments, scarcely imaginable three decades ago. The disappearance of the queues inthese places may seem an unusual concern, but these are not the only places that markets have entered.10. According to the author, which of the following seems governed by the principle―First come, first served‖?A. Taking buses.B. Buying houses.C. Flying with an airline.D. Visiting amusement parks.11.The example of the recorded message in Paragraphs 4 and 5 illustrates.A. the necessity of patience in queuingB. the advantage of modern technologyC. the uncertainty of allocation principleD. the fairness of telephonic services12.The passage is meant to __________________________.A. justify paying for faster servicesB. discuss the morals of allocating thingsC. analyze the reason for standing in lineD. criticize the behavior of queue jumpingDThe National GalleryDescription:The National Gallery is the British national art museum built on the north side of Trafalgar Square in London. 第Ⅰ卷第一部分:阅读理解( 共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
AAccording to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gigawatts of electricity every year. Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them anywhere. The project, called Hywind, is the world’s first large-scale deepwater wind turbine (涡轮发电机). Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2. 3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar, a technology Hywi nd’s creator, the Norwegian company StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables ; these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. Hywind’s stability in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to the plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern Norway as early as September. To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but it’s difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, the whole spar’s center of gravity must be moved much closer to the ocean’s surface. To do that, the company plans to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades.Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted. Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planet’s surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available.1. The Hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure the stability of .A. the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floorB. the spar which is floating in deep-sea waterC. the blades driven by strong and steady sea windD. the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface2. To balance a bigger turbine high on a floating spar, a new type of turbine is to be designed with its gearbox sitting .A. on the sea floorB. on the spar topC. at sea levelD. behind the blades3. Wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can .A. solve the technical problems of deepwater windmillsB. make financial profits by producing more turbinesC. settle the arguments about environmental problemsD. explore low-carbon power resources available at seaBMark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shining new computer enviously. Jason was determined not to go against their father's wishes but Mark was more adventurous than his brother. He loved experimenting and his aim was to become a scientist like his father.“Dad will be really mad if he finds out you've been playing with his new computer.”Jason said,“He told us not to touch it.”“He won't find out,” Mark said,“I'll just have a quick look and shut it down.”Mark had been scolded before for touching his father's equipment. But his curiosity wasdifficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.It was a strangelooking machine—one his dad had brought home from the laboratory where he worked.“It's an experimental model,” his father had explained,“so don't touch it under any circumstances.” But his father's warning only served to make Mark more curious. Without any further thought,Mark turned on the power switch. The computer burst into life and seconds later, the screen turned into colors, shifting and changing and then two big white words appeared in the center of the screen:“SPACE TRANSPORTER.”“Yes!” Mark cried excitedly,“It's a computer game. I knew it!Dad's only been pretending to work. He's really been playing games instead.” A new message appeared on the screen:“ENTER NAMESVOYAGER 1:...VOYAGER 2:...”Mark's fingers flew across the keyboard as he typed in both of their names.“INPUT ACCEPTED.START TRANSPORT PROGRAM. AUTORETRIEVE INITIATED(自动回收程序已启动).”The screen turned even brighter and a noise suddenly rose in volume.“I think we'd better shut it off,Mark,” Jason yelled, reaching for the power switch. He was really frightened. But his hand never reached the switch. A single beam of dazzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow(光芒),until they themselves seemed to be glowing. Then it died down just as suddenly as it had burst into life. And the boys were no longer there. On the screen, the letters changed.“TRANSPORT SUCCESSFUL.DESTINATION: MARS.RETRIEVE DATE:2025.”4.Why did Mark touch the computer against his father's warning?A.He wanted to take a voyage. B.He didn't like the loud noise and light. C.He didn't want to play games any more. D.He was afraid something dangerous might happen.CResearchers from France and Italy discovered that Canadian parents are less strict with their children than mothers and fathers in France and Italy.“Our most important finding was the difference between Canadians and the others,” said Professor Michel Claes, the lead author of the study.“Canadians focus on independence and negotiation. On the other hand,Italians, for example, exercise more control. We found Canadians seem to focus on negotiation in case of a c onflict.”Claes said Canada,France and Italy were selected for the study because they share important cultural and social factors.“We chose FrenchCanadians because they share the same language as France, and originally came from France and share certain values. Italy was included because it was considered to have similar, strong and important family values,” he explained. The researchers examined the emotional ties between parents and their children by questioning 1,256 students aged 11 to 19 years old.Canadian students reported less control and more free actions, according to the study. Italian parents were stricter and French parents were somewhere in the middle.Claes explains that the differences lie in education in Canada,France and Italy.“North America has its own educational values, which promote individualization. Tolerance and comprehension are encouraged. Italy,on the other hand, promotes respect of authority, control, and the need for permission.” he said.Children from all three countries described their mothers as warm and communicative. Italianand Canadian children had similar feelings about their fathers, and reported high levels of emotional ties. But French fathers were generally thought by their children to be more distant and cold.“We were surprised by this,” Claes admitted.“It seems as though the relationships between French mothers and their children were becoming closer over time, while fathers maintain a form of distance and coldness, which is more of a source of conflict in France than in the other countries.”8.Professor Michel Claes believes that Canada,France and Italy ________.A.have the same family spirit B.have some similar cultural traditionsC.have experienced some similar social changes D.have experienced similar cultural developments9.How did the researchers carry out the study ?A.By collecting answers of parents from Canada,France and Italy.B.By collecting answers of children from Canada,France and Italy.C.By questioning parents and their children from Italian Canadian families.D.By questioning children from FrenchCanadian families.10. According to Michel Claes, what mainly leads to the differences in parentchildrenrelationships among Canada,France and Italy?A.Educational opportunities. B.Traditional ideas.C.Educational values. D.Historical events.11.Which of the following is NOT a finding of the study?A.French children have troubled relationships with their parents.B.Canadian children have close relationships with their parents.C.Italian children have good relationships with their parents.D.Kids from Canada,France and Italy have closer ties with their moms.DAn idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem arose in New York ,where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point ,putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultinatelas Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process, or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.12. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?A. To invite authors to guide readers.B. To encourage people to read and share.C. To involve people in community service.D. To promote the friendship between cities.13. Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?A .They had little interest in reading. B. They were too busy to reada book.C. They came from many different backgroundsD. They lacked support from the local government14. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?A. In large communities with little sense of unityB. In large cities where libraries are far from homeC. In medium-sized cities with a diverse populationD. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached15. According to Nancy, the degree of students of the project is judged byA. the careful selection of a proper bookB. the growing popularity of the writersC. the number of people who benefit from reading.D. the number of books that each person reads.第二节七选五填空 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Since last November, the dome has been surrounded by metal poles, or scaffolding(脚手架), and heavy cloth as part of a repair project. The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks on its surface and other damage. The dome was completed around 1863. U.S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast iron frame is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the current construction is to repair the leaks, to fill the cracks, to take off excess(多余的)layers of paint.”Workers are removing old paint. They covered a large part of the building in plastic and a special cloth to protect workers from the wind and other elements. Much of the work is done at night, when lawmakers are not in the building. Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its current appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was dramatic, and very fantas tic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly, it is kind of a disappointment.”Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries ... and you know, there just needs to be preventive maintenance. I am not upset with that at all.”The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready for the inauguration of a new president in January 2017.32. What about Abraham Lincoln? Some government office s call it Presidents’ Day.Others say the holiday is officially Washington’s Birthday.Confused yet?George Washington was elected the country’s first President on April 30,1789.Soon after,Americans began publicly celebrating his birthday.Presidential hi storians say the actual date of George Washington’s birth is February 11,1732.But a change in the calendar system 20 years later shifted all dates, making Washington’s birthday February 22,which is now well accepted. In 1879.Congress made Washington’s birthd ay an official federal holiday. It was the first federal holiday to celebrate an individual’s birthday. In 1968,Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act,which moved the holiday to the third Monday in February. The newlaw did not change the holiday’s name.It wa s still called Washington’s Birthday, even though some lawmakers wanted to call it Presidents’Day to include Abraham Lincoln, whose actual birthday is February 12.Many people argue that the holiday should celebrate all past Presidents. They feel Lincoln should be honored for his role in preserving the nation during the Civil War and helping to free slaves.Others feel the holiday should only honor Washington.the countlry’s first President. They say shifting the focus away from Washington would mean future generations of kids would not know about the Father of Our Country.Laws have been introduced in Congress over the years to require use of the term“George Washington’s Birthday.”but none of those laws have been passed.Meanwhile, many state governments and school districts now use the term“Presidents’Day.”Many stoles also use it to promote holiday sales.Should the holiday honor Washington,Washington and Lincoln,or all past Presidents? What are tears? Scientists are working hard to find the answers to these questions.Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology at Tilburg University,in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying.According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears.Basal tears are the first type. They lubricate(润滑)the eyes and act as a protective barrier between the eye and the rest of the World.Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are em otional tears.“These are released in response to emotional states,”explains Vingerhoets.“Especially when we feel helpless.”Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other.“Humans are ver y complex social creatures,”says Lauren Bylsma,a professor at the University of Pittsburgh,in Pennsylvania.“It seems that tears serve to arouse help and support.from others,’’She says.“Another reason we weep is that humans have the longest developmental pe riod of almost any animal. It takes a long time to grow up.”Vingerhoets agrees.“I think that the reason why humans shed tears(流眼泪)has something to do with our childhood,”he says.“That’s the time when we are stir dependent on adults for love and protect ion and care. The major advantage of emotional tears is that you can target them at a specific person.”Vingerhoets says this ability to target someone could have come in hand in prehistoric times, when humans were living among dangerous animals.Crying could attract predators(捕食者).Tears were a safer way to get attention. In this case,it is better to use a silent signal to ask for help,”he says.Vingerhoets and Bylsma do frequent studies to better understand why humans cry.According to Byhma, there is still much more to discover.“It’s surprising,”she says,“how much we stiil don’t know.”32.Which of the following is reflex tears?A.Tears when eyes are dry.B.Tears moved by a story.C.Tears released when crying.D.Tears when dirt gets into eyes.33.What’s the function of tears according to Bylsma?A.It helps human develop longer.B.It helps humans attract predators.C.It helps arouse attention.D.It helps people to be independent.34.What can we learn from the passage?A.Emotional tears are better than reflex tears.B.Basal tears are a type of protective barrier.C.Tears helped frighten predators away.D.It’s easy to understand why humans cry.35.What’s the main idea of this passage?A.Why people shed tears.B.When people shed tears.C.How people shed tears.D.Where people shed tears.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容。

Koalas are marsupials. This means the mother carries her baby in a pocket while it develops, similar to a kangaroo. The baby koala lives in its mother’s pocket for the first six months of its life. The name “koala”comes from a native Australian word that means “no drink”. The koalas get almost all their water from the eucalyptus(桉树) leaves they eat. That’s where they get their food too.Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves, and only the leaves of certain eucalyptus trees. The eucalyptus trees are where the koalas live. It’s also where they sleep.Koalas sleep about nineteen hours a day!Why do they sleep so much? Some people think it’s because they’re lazy. But koalas aren’t lazy. They sleep so much because there isn’t much nutrition in eucalyptus leaves.Koalas store hardly any fat, so they must save their energy. One way to do this is to move slowly and sleep a lot. After a day of sleeping they like to move around and eat just after sunset. They live alone most of the time.Koalas are very protective of their trees. If a koalasees another koala eating in its favorite tree, it might tell the other koal a to leave by “barking” at it.Koalas do “talk” to each other.Besides barks, the males make a deep grunting sound. The mothers and babies talk in soft clicking sounds. If they get scared they may scream like a baby.25.According to the article, how are koalas and kangaroos alike?A.They both have thick fur.B.They both have sharp teeth.C.They both eat eucalyptus leaves.D. If an adult koala screams like a baby, he may get ________.A.worried B.scared C.hungry D.SleepyCMaking friends is a skill like most skills. It improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some action. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone. Joining a club or a group, talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activity. Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people comes from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us, finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are, and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.Try to act self-confident even if you don’t feel that w ay. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile. If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.Just meeting someone new does not mean that you will make friends with that person—friendship is based on mutual liking and “give and take”. It takes time and effort to develop.29. The best topic of the passage may be ________.A. FriendshipB. Making friendsC. Meeting New PeopleD. Facing the Unknown30. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A. Making friends needs practicing.B. Making friends needs to be more active in getting in touch with people.C. When meeting someone, make him feel nice and easy.D. Before making friends with someone, judge him if he’s too this or too that.31. The development of friendship needs ________.A. a lot of moneyB. lots of conversationC. time and effortD. carefully judgingDPlants are flowering faster than scientists predicted (预测) in reaction to climate change, which could have long damaging effects on food chains (链条) and ecosystems.(生态系统)Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world, changing some living patterns, scientists say.Increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants produce oxygen (氧气), while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of growth.“Predicting species’ reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology,” said the researches of several U.S. universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services. The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated (低估) the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing(长出叶子) by 4 times.“Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance —for both leafing and flowering —that results from temperature increases,” the study said. The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said.Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis (光合作用) to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet.Scientists believe the world’s average temperature has risen by about 0.8℃since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃ every ten years since 1979.So far, efforts to cut emissions (排放) of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond(超出) 2℃ this century —a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels.32. ATwelve years ago, I arrived in Central Florida from Puerto Rico. I had heard of a job opportunity and decided to pursue it. But it never became a reality. I quickly learned that being alone without resources in an unfamiliar city was not a comfortable situation to be in.Once my limited funds ran out I became homeless and spent a year and a half living on the streets of Orlando. Apart from feeling not being noticed and missing my family, I had to face another challenge—hunger. For the first time in my life, I, as a foreign man, who had lived my life in the relative comfort of the middle class, understood the desperation someone feels when they don’t get enough to eat. I clearly remembered having run a distance of more than 7 miles on many occasions just to make it to a local feeding program before they closed at 7 pm.Once the need for food was met, the next challenge would arise—where to find a place to sleep for the night. Fortunately, local programs like the Coalition for the Homeless, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Wayne Densch Center were an important part of my ability to survive my painful experience. With the assistance of these programs, I was accepted by a college scholarship program through the Coalition and obtained two degrees from Valencia. My experience has helped me understand that devoting my life to helping others offers lasting rewards. Today, I am employed as Childhood Hunger Programs Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank and oversee the summer feeding, Hi-Five Kids Pack, and Kids Café programs. I am so proud to be able to distribute food resources to those wonderful programs and help hundreds more like me.21. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?A. Every day? Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid—related things. In fact, I am one of them.Child—rearing (养育) doesn’t come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of capers and a bay leaf. Then he’ d buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees.My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food. The truth is, mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting phrase such as “Mummy kiss it better,” and cured l7 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.Yes, mothers are incredible people, but they are not always right. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.The mother of Bill Gates: “ If you’ re going to drop out of college and hang out with your nerdy friends, don’ t come running to me when you find yourself penniless.” The mother of Albert Einstein: “When you grow up, you’ ll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won’ t pay the grocery bills.” The mother of George W.Bush: “You’ll never be like your dad, who became President of the United States and started his own war.”28. What does the underlined word “slip-ups” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. storiesB. shortcomingsC. mistakesD. advantages31. The last paragraph is mainly developed by .A. providing different examplesB. following the order of spaceC. making comparisonsD. analyzing causesDWe know the famous ones--the Thomas Edison and the Alexander Graham Bells--but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper (雨刮器)? Shouldn't we know who they are?Joan McLean thinks so. In fact, McLean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she's developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning "who"invented "what", however, McLean also likes her students to learn the answers to the "why" and "how" questions. According to McLean, "When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try. "Her students agree. One young man with a patent(专利证)for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean's statement. "If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper's invention," said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major, "I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into something so constructive. " Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer. So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights,so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn't be a built-in device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas, a lever (操作杆) on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It's hard to imagine driving without Garrett A. Morgan's traffic light. It's equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine J. Blodgett's innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?32. By mentioning "traffic light" and "windshield wiper", the author indicates that countless inventions are ________.A. beneficial, because their inventors are famousB. beneficial, though their inventors are less famousC. not useful, because their inventors are less famousD. not useful, though their inventors are famous33. Professor Joan McLean's course aims to ________.A. add color and variety to students' campus lifeB. inform students of the windshield wiper's inventionC. carry out the requirements by Mountain UniversityD. prepare students to try their own inventions34. Tommy Lee's invention of the unbreakable umbrella was ________.A. not eventually accepted by the umbrella producerB. inspired by the story behind the windshield wiperC. due to his dream of being caught in a rainstormD. not related to Professor Joan McLean's lectures35. Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage?A. How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?B. How to Design a Built-in Device for Cleaning the Window?C. Shouldn't We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?D. Shouldn't We Develop Invention Courses in Universities?第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

What about Abraham Lincoln? Some government offices call it Presi dents’ Day.Others say the holiday is officially Washington’s Birthday.Confused yet?George Washington was elected the country’s first President on April 30,1789.Soon after,Americans began publicly celebrating his birthday.Presidential historians say the actual date of George Washington’s birth is February 11,1732.But a change in the calendar system 20 years later shifted all dates, making Washington’s birthday February 22,which is now well accepted. In 1879.Congress made Washington’s birthday an official federal holiday. It was the first federal holiday to celebrate an individual’s birthday. In 1968,Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act,which moved the holiday to the third Monday in February. The newlaw did not change the holiday’s name.It was still called Washington’s Birthday, even though some lawmakers wanted to call it Presidents’Day to include Abraham Lincoln, whose actual birthday is February 12.Many people argue that the holiday should celebrate all past Presidents. They feel Lincoln should be honored for his role in preserving the nation during the Civil War and helping to free slaves.Others feel the holiday should only honor Washington.the countlry’s first President. They say shifting the focus away from Washington would mean future generations of kids would not know about the Father of Our Country.Laws have been introduced in Congress over the years to require use of the term“George Washington’s Birthday.”but none of those laws have been passed.Meanwhile, many state governments and school di stricts now use the term“Presidents’Day.”Many stoles also use it to promote holiday sales.Should the holiday honor Washington,Washington and Lincoln,or all past Presidents? What are tears? Scientists are working hard to find the answers to these questions.Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology at Tilburg University,in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying.According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears.Basal tears are the first type. They lubricate(润滑)the eyes and act as a protective barrier between the eye and the rest of the World.Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears.“These are released in response to emotional states,”explains Vingerhoets.“Especially when we feel helpless.”Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other.“Humans are very complex socia l creatures,”says Lauren Bylsma,a professor at the University of Pittsburgh,in Pennsylvania.“It seems that tears serve to arouse help and support.from others,’’She says.“Another reason we weep is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time to grow up.”Vingerhoets agrees.“I think that the reason why humans shed tears(流眼泪)has something to do with our childhood,”he says.“That’s the time when we are stir dependent on adults for love and protection and care.

I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said:”Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today - and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week.”A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, ” But I’m just not creative.”“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”“Oh, sure.”“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”“Nobody. I do it.”“Really-at night, when you’re asleep?”“Sure.”“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”25. To help them to see their creativity.B. To find out about their sleeping habits.C. To help them to improve their memory.D. To find out about their ways of thinking.CReading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website turns the page on the traditional idea of a bookgroup.Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossing to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce peterson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual(虚拟). A Website Links People through BooksDA new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful Antarctic voyage back to life.Frank Hurley’s pictures would be outstanding----undoubtedly first-rate photo-journalism---if they had been made last week. In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海滩), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship. The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-built three-master that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done. Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort. Scott’s last journey, completed as he lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, cau ght the world’s imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds. Shackleton, aonetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography. Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.33. Finally, there are em otional tears.“These are released in response to emotional states,”explains Vingerhoets.“Especially when we feel helpless.”Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other.“Humans are ver y complex social creatures,”says Lauren Bylsma,a professor at the University of Pittsburgh,in Pennsylvania.“It seems that tears serve to arouse help and support.from others,‟‟She says.“Another reason we weep is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time to grow up.”Vingerhoets agrees.“I think that the reason why humans shed tears(流眼泪)has something to do with our childhood,”he says.“That‟s the time when we are stir dependent on adults for love and protection and care. The major advantage of emotional tears is that you can target them at a specific person.”Vingerhoets says this ability to target someone could have come in hand in prehistoric times, when humans were living among dangerous animals.Crying could attractpredators(捕食者).Tears were a safer way to get attention. In this case,it is better to use a silent signal to ask for help,”he says.Vingerhoets and Bylsma do frequent studies to better understand why humans cry.According to Byhma, there is still much more to discover.“It‟s surprising,”she says,“how much we stiil don‟t know.”32.Which of the following is reflex tears?A.Tears when eyes are dry.B.Tears moved by a story.C.Tears released when crying.D.Tears when dirt gets into eyes.33.What‟s the function of tears according to Bylsma?A.It helps human develop longer.B.It helps humans attract predators.C.It helps arouse attention.D.It helps people to be independent.34.What can we learn from the passage?A.Emotional tears are better than reflex tears.B.Basal tears are a type of protective barrier.C.Tears helped frighten predators away.D.It‟s easy to understand why humans cry.35.What‟s the main idea of this passage?A.Why people shed tears.B.When people shed tears.C.How people shed tears.D.Where people shed tears.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容。
