从大的方面讲,“修身、齐家”的士人必须借助现实的政治权力才能“治国、平天下”;从小的方面讲,个人禄位、仕途风光等亦须尽可能接近君王才能获得。
就君与臣的关系而言,品级愈高,职掌愈重要,愈见君主的信任与器重;而由高官降为卑职,由清要之所到闲散之地,由庙堂之迩到江湖之遥,都意味着与君主在空间距离和心理距离上的扩大与疏远,都意味着政治理想和人生价值的弱化与沦落。

在中国古代,“伦理”实际上是建基于“礼”这一宗法等级的人际关系及其秩序之上的。
一般说来,“伦理”是一种人与人的关系及其秩序。
但在古代,这种“关系”有其特殊的内容:一是指君与臣、父与子、兄与弟、夫与妻以及朋友之间具有双向义务的关系,也就是双方各以对对方的义务而成为“伦理”关系。
所谓“慈”“孝”“良”“恭”“仁”“忠”“惠”“顺”“信”等则是诸种双向义务的规范形式;二是指这种双向义务关系的构成以亲情、友情为纽带和基础,所谓“君臣关系”则是“父子关系”的延伸。
第三,除了“朋友”一伦,其他以亲情为纽带的关系都不是平等的,而是有上下尊卑等差的,体现了传统“伦理”既亲亲又尊尊的宗法等级性特点。
由此可见,“伦理”作为一种“关系”的实体存在,不是任意的。
没有血缘亲情关系就不构成家庭伦理,没有友情关系就构不成朋友伦理。
但在中国古代,虽有血缘亲情关系,如没有上下、尊卑之别,也不构成“伦理”关系。
传统“伦理”的这种结构,其实就是“礼”。
而正是这样一种“礼”制型定了人与人的关系和秩序,即所谓“伦理”。
中国古代社会之“伦理”,首先是指具有宗法性的“家庭”“家族”,由之而延伸为一个等级有分的社会关系及其秩序,借用黑格尔的话也就是一个“伦理实体”。
