Module 2 The Renaissance My New Teachers(建议用时40分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AWant to live longer? Win an Oscar.A new study says that actors who received the award earn more than larger paychecks. So when 94-year-old Katharine Hepburn once remarked that she was respected internationally “like an old building”, she had no idea that her four Oscars directly influenced her longevity(长寿).The study says winning actors will live 3. 9 years longer than their losing counterparts(对手). Actors who have won more than once, like Hepburn, live up to six years longer than those who were nominated(提名)but never won.“We found that they died from the same things we all die from—cancer, heart disease, but they fought them a bit longer and diseases came a bit later, ”says Dr Donald Redelmeier, the leading author of the study. Redelmeier says the sense of success and satisfaction makes one’s soul become more full of life.“We are not saying that you will live longer if you win an Oscar, ”explains Redelmeier, “or that people should go o ut and take acting courses. Our main conclusion is simply that social factors are important. ”The study’s implied conclusion, he says, is that doctors should ask about their patients’ personal feelings because mental well-being is related to physical health.Redelmeier says he got the idea for the study when he watched a glowing Gwyneth Paltrow win an Oscar in 1999 for her role in Shakespeare in Love. Redelmeier says, “She looked more full of life than anyone I had seen. ”“We found, too, those that had mu lti-nominations and no win had the same life expectancy as those with just a single nomination and no win, ”Redelmeier adds. 【文章大意】本文讲述了一种现象, 获得奥斯卡奖的人的寿命往往要比没有得奖的人长, 科学家研究得出, 人的寿命与精神因素有关, 精神因素越好, 寿命就越长。

My parents say that, as long as I remember it's a game, I can play whatever I want.”Despite what they say, many scientific studies clearly show that violent video games make kids more likely to yell, push, and punch, says Brad Bushman, a psychologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Bushman and his colleagues recently reviewed more than 300 studies of video media effects and said, “ We included every single study we could find on the topic. Regardless of what kids say, violent video games are harmful.”TV has been around a lot longer than video games, so researchers have more data on the l ongterm effects of violent TV shows on people than they do on the effectsof violent video games. Scientists at the University of Michigan recorded the TV watching habits of hundreds of first and third graders in 1977. Fifteen years later, the researchers looked at what kind of adults these kids had become. By the time they were in their early twenties, women who had watched violent shows as kids were four times as likely to have punched, choked, or beaten other people as were women who didn't watch such programs as kids. Boys who watched violent TV grew up to be three times as likely to commit crimes as boys who didn't watch such programs. But that doesn't mean that everyone who watched violent programs ended up being violent themselves. It wa s just more likely to happen for some people.16.Which of the following about Mateo is TRUE?A.He doesn't go killing people or stealing cars in a game.B.He works in a market.C.His parents allow him to play violent games as long as he regards it as a game.D.He agrees that gameplaying habits and TV watching inspire one to act out.17.Researches show ________.A.violent TV shows have more bad effects on people than violent video games B.women are more likely to punch, choke or beat other peopleC.boys who watched violent programs ended up being violent themselvesD.both violent TV shows and violent video games are harmful18.According to the passage, we students________.A.had better watch violent TV shows than play violent gamesB.should try to control our behaviors after playing violent gamesC.should give up the habits of watching violent shows and playing violent games D.sho uld keep away from those watching violent programs in case they commit crim es19.From the passage, we can infer that________.A.everyone who watched violent programs ended up being violent themselves B.Brad Bushman is against violent video gamesC.government has taken measures to stop violent shows and gamesD.TV has been around a lot longer than video gamesBBlind imitation (模仿)is selfdestruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable. In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes (菜谱) and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else's way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child's bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did.If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others. In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique.Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not de speration. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them.Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material;it is what to do with all the material knocking at the door of imagination.Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve you. Then you can say, “I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors' tragedies and declare victory, a nd know that they are cheering me on.”20.Imitation proves useful when you________.A.know you are uniqueB.lose the balance of lifeC.begin to learn something newD.get tired of routine practice21. To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should________.A. forget daily fear and painB. choose the right exampleC. ask others for decisionsD. stay away from stars22.According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are________.A. desperate to influence others with their knowledgeB. ready to turn their original ideas into realityC. eager to discover what their ancestors didD. willing to accept others' ideas23.The trouble a creator faces is________.A. the lack of strong motivationB. the absence of practical ideasC. how to search for more materialsD. how to use imagination creatively24. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?A. To highlight the importance of creativity.B. To criticize the characters of role models.C. To compare imitation with creation.D. To explain the meaning of success.。
Module 2 The Renaissance No Drugs(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AAs the population grows and temperatures rise, it will become more difficult to grow enough food for everyone. So, scientists are exploring the planet for plants that do not need as much water as tod ay’s crops. The Mojave Desert in the US state of California is home to some of these plants.Scientist Heather Rose Kates of the University of Florida is in that desert. She is searching along roads for a plant called coyote melon which is a kind of squash(南瓜小果). Coyote melon may not taste good, but it can be grown in places that have little rainfall. The desert where it grows gets just 15 to 20 centimeters of rain per year, or less. Other kinds of squash need at least two and a half centimeters per week to grow.Scientists are considering combining wild coyote melon with regular squash to see if they can make a tasty vegetable that doesn’t need as much water to grow. That could be useful on a planet growing warmer and more crowded every day.Andy Jarvis works at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture. He says farmers will need to produce 50 to 70 percent more food by 2050 to feed the world. So, he says, researchers are studying the wild versions of farm-grown crops. But he says there is a problem. He says many wild versions of farmed plants are disappearing. He says they are threatened and scientists have not collected their seeds for future use. Scientist Kates is part of an international effort to gather these plants and save their seeds while it is still possible. Workers are collecting wild potatoes in Argentina and wild peppers in Para-guav. The plants and seeds will be sent for storage to the Global Seed Vault in Norway and at Kew Gardens in Britain. Ms Kates spends most of her time in a laboratory. She says gathering plants has helped her understand more about them.【文章大意】这是一篇时文报道类文章。

课时作业44 The RenaissanceⅠ.阅读理解AFor the past two years I have been travelling and living abroad. Home has become more of a feeling than a place. I feel at home when I am with my family in London, but I also feel at home in Italy with friends I love. Home is no longer a picture of a house with a front door and some windows. It is more complicated than that. This is one of the reasons that celebrating the new year has become very important for me. I do not care about “New Year's resolutions (新年计划)〞—living abroad has made me constantly reconsider what kind of person I want to be and how I will live my life, so I don't feel the need to plan for change:I live for change.New Year's Eve has become my time to reconnect with the friends, which makes me feel at home. Every year we try to reunite wherever we are, and remember the time when we knew each other so well that we felt like a family. It is a moment to reconnect and get to know each other again. Last year, we travelled to a cottage in Ireland where we had no Internet and no neighbours. In the middle of the countryside, away from our constantly changing lives, we were able to become like a little family again. This year, we went to Barcelona. It was a very big change. We were surrounded by culture and life and joy. There were bars and parties. It was different, but one thing stayed very much the same—I felt at home again and we felt like a family again.A lot of people feel that New Year's Eve cannot live up to expectations. Ideas such as the “New Year's kiss〞 an d “resolutions〞 create a lot of pressure for people to have a night to remember, a night that will change their lives and perhaps make the next year worth living. I think those people are missing the point. Why can't New Year be about friends?本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。

But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And,in a strange way,I expect that you will find your father there, too,in your mind and heart.I find that my parents, who died years ago, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive.I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions.I remember that when I became a professor,I was so proud,or rather so pleased with myself that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in ing,but when it did,all my mother said was “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care.Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors, and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause.I pray silently, sometimes,in the dead of night, that ancie nt cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword, and my darling from the p ower of the dog.” Yet I know the death es to us all,and sometimes es suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on,I’m sure,in the lives of those we love, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there mightbe fewer knives on our streets today.1.According to the whole text we can see that the first paragraph________. In the film, Prado bravely interviewed her parents and sister about how she was able to beat her depression and eating disorder. This film and others the girls had made were shown to parents and friends on the last day of the academy, celebrating their hard work.“It's their story, and nobody knows how to tell it better than they do,” Williams said.“These girls are from really diffic ult backgrounds. They feel trapped sometimes. They feel alone,” Williams said. “The camera gives them a way to look at theirworld in a different way and get out of that feeling.”Girls in the program practice their skills and build confidence by going out in the community and interviewing people for the short films. Many of them had no experience, but they had good storytelling skills.“I work with these girls. Every day I leave inspired and completely grateful, because I know that due to the work we're doing with them, things will be better,” said GlobalGirl Media summer academy project director Heather Faison.语篇解读本文讲述了非营利组织GlobalGirl Media通过教女孩儿们数字讲故事技巧来帮助女孩儿们摆脱烦恼。
