Play Ball, Amelia BedeliaPeggy ParishSummary:Amelia Bedelia, who knows very little about baseball, stands in for a sick player during a game. [picture Amelia Bedelia is standing at a gate, she is holding a bag of groceries, she is watching some boys play baseball]Amelia Bedelia walked by the baseball field.The Grizzlies team was there.[picture Amelia Bedelia walks towards the boys, some of the boys are sitting on a bench others are looking at Amelia Bedelia, they are all in their uniforms.]"I never saw such gloomy faces," said Amelia Bedelia. "Did something terrible happen?""We play the Tornadoes today," said Jimmy. "and Donny has the measles.""There is not one to take his place," said Tom."What about me?" said Amelia Bedelia."You," said the boys. "Great!""But I don't know much about the game," said Amelia Bedelia."I will explain it to you," said Tom. "The idea of the game is to hit the ball and run to each of the bases. The other team tries to get the ball and tag you out,"he said."That is easy enough," said Amelia Bedelia.[picture Amelia Bedelia has a bat in her hand, the ball is coming towards here, her feet are coming off the ground the bat is close to her head and her hat is in the air]"Maybe we should warm her up at bat," said Bob.2"Good idea," said Tom. "Amelia Bedelia you hit the ball when Bob throws it.""All right," she said. Bob pitched the ball, but Amelia Bedelia missed it."No, no," said Tom. "You must step in to meet the ball."[picture Amelia Bedelia is trying again to hit the ball, this time she is taking a step forward and only has one hand on the bat]Bob pitched the ball again.And Amelia Bedelia stepped in to meet it."Ouch!" she said. "This game hurts."[picture Amelia Bedelia is looking at the boys her hand touching her fore head]The boys taught Amelia Bedelia how to bat.Later she said, "all right, I'm warmed up. In fact, I am hot,""Then be here at two o'clock," said Jimmy. "The game starts then."[picture Amelia Bedelia is in the attic and is opening a chest full of clothes]Amelia Bedelia went home.She went right up to the attic."I know there is a uniform here," said Amelia Bedelia.And there was one.[picture Amelia Bedelia is putting on a uniform, with a hat, bloomers, and captain jacket]She took a nip here and a tuck there.Soon that uniform was just right.[picture Amelia Bedelia is in the kitchen mixing something up]"That's done," said Amelia Bedelia. "Now what should I do until it is time to go?"then she saw the cookie jar."It's empty!" she said. Here's Amelia Bedelia!" called the Grizzlies. "Then let's play ball," said the Tornados.[picture Tom is pointing to a spot on the ground, said Amelia Bedelia is looking at her spot and holding her purse]"The Tornados are up first," said Tom. "Amelia Bedelia you stand here. Catch the ball if it comes your ways.""All right," she said.[picture a boy from the other team is running to first base]"Batter up!" called the pitcher.The pitcher threw the ball.The batter hit it.He ran to first base.[picture said Amelia Bedelia has a hold of one the boys and trying to put a tag on him]Get the ball, Amelia Bedelia," yelled Tom. "Tag Jack before he gets to second base.""I must have a tag in here somewhere," said Amelia Bedelia.She tagged Jack.[picture Amelia Bedelia is bending over to catcha ball, her arms are wide out, her purse is sitting on the ground next her foot, the ball is coming to her]4Another boy come up to bat.He hit the ball.The ball landed near Amelia Bedelia.[picture Amelia Bedelia has the ball in her hand, her leg is up in the air, her arm is back, and she is ready to throw the ball]"Throw it to first base," yelled the boys. "Put Dick out."So Amelia Bedelia threw the ball to first base.[picture all the baseball players are watching Amelia Bedelia run over and pick up Dick]Then she ran and grabbed Dick. "How far out do you want him?" she called."Amelia Bedelia!" shouted the boys. "Put him down."[picture Amelia Bedelia has put Dick down, he is laying flat on the ground with his arms out, and Tom is in the back ground with his hand on his head] so Amelia Bedelia put dick down. "You sure do change your minds fast," she said. "You told me to put him out!"[picture Tom is trying to catch the ball, he jumped up and his feet are off the ground]Dick got back on first base.And the game went on.The next batter missed the ball.The catcher threw the ball to the pitcher.The pitcher missed it.[picture Amelia Bedelia is jumping in the air to catch a ball]But Amelia Bedelia caught it!"Hurry, Amelia Bedelia! Throw the ball!" shouted the boys."Dick is trying to steal second base.""Steal second base!" said Amelia Bedelia. "That's not nice."5[picture Amelia Bedelia is standing in the center of the field holding second base]Amelia Bedelia ran and picked up second base."It's all right now, fellows," she called. "Second base is safe.""For gosh sakes,, Amelia Bedelia!" said the boys. "Put that back."Amelia Bedelia looked puzzled."Put he was going to steal." She said."It's all right to steal bases," said Tom."That is part of the game,""Oh," said Amelia Bedelia.[picture Tom up to bat, swinging at the ball]Finally the Tornados were out.They had made two runs.It was Grizzlies' turn at bat.Tomfirst.wasout.Hestruck[picture Jimmy sliding into base]Then Jimmy had his turn.He hit that ball hard.He made it to third base.[picture, Bob hit the ball straight up in the air]Next it was Bob's turn.He hit the ball."Pop fly," called the pitcher. "I've got it.""Pop fly?" said Amelia Bedelia. "I didn't hear anything pop!6[picture Amelia Bedelia is holding a bat, and talking 2 two boys]then it was Amelia Bedelia's turn."Come, on Amelia Bedelia," said Bob. "Make a base hit so Jimmy can come in.""Which base should I hit?" she asked.[picture Amelia Bedelia is at home base getting ready to bat]Tom said, "just hit the ball and run to first base!""All right," said Amelia Bedelia. And that is just what she did.[picture Amelia Bedelia is standing with the boys looking glum around her]Jimmy scored for the grizzlies.The team cheered.The next player struck out.The Tornados were at bat again.The score was Tornados 2, Grizzlies 1. The Grizzlies called a time out."Amelia Bedelia is not very good in the field," said Jimmy."She gets all mixed up," said Tom. "Run home, Amelia Bedelia!"Amelia Bedelia looked puzzled, but she did not stop running.And on her way she scooped up home plate too.The boys were to surprised to say a thing.The Tom yelled, "We won! We won the game!""Amelia Bedelia, come back!" shouted the boys.
