There are all kinds of manners. Many years ago, children who had good manners were seen and not heard. They kept quiet if grown-ups were talking. Today, well-manneredchildren have more freedom.Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places. Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp” after you finish eating. Burping would show that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are told to say “Excuse me, please.” In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. People show good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat. What are manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you. Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the other tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into each one. The people will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners begin in the same way. People need ways to show that they want to be friends.(1)How did polite children behave?A . Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.ABoys need friends, suffer when they don’t believe they have any, and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do, in truth, though, no boy is an island; boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers.Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are. A recent study of 10 to 15-year-old boys and girls found that girls’ friendships are actually more fragile. Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.Boys are the living definition of the phrase “peer group”; they love games with rules, competition, and doing things together. Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate (空手道) class or on the basketball court. Competence and skill are widely respected; being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can haunt (萦绕心头) a boy for years. As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls. During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy’s life — and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is “always there for me”, or someone he can trust. They may be partners in crime or partners in study, but the friendship of adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.56. The common belief of adults is that boys ______.A. don’t care about others as much as girlsB. don’t value friendships as much as girlsC. have the same friendship as girlsD. have healthier friendship thangirls57. According to the text, ____.A. boys usually build friendships by playing competitive gamesB. boys like to have small groups of friendsC. boys’ friendships seldom result in anyone being hurtD. boys’ friendships can hardly end in failure58. The author mentions the study in Para.2 to prove ____.A. girls value relationships more than boysB. most boys consider their friendsvery importantC. boys may be better at keeping friendships than girlsD. boys may be more activein a friendship59. As a boy gets older, he tends to ____.A. widen his circle of friends to include his parentB. shift his focus from his friends to himselfC. leave his parents out of his friendsD. be confused about what a friendship is60. What’s the best title for the text?A. Friendships between Boys and Girls.B. Boys and Their Friendship.C. Childhood and Adolescent Friendship.D. Tips on Making Friends with Boys.BSome time ago, I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn't even look at my chair. The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth —so I decided that my approach must be wrong.I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said, “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It ‘s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that; it's nothing.”Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?”I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I'll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I'm sorry; I'll give you twenty -seven pounds for it. ” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair. ” “You’re right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chair for me?’” “I wouldn't have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you; shall we say for a fiver?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.61. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. The atmosphere is a gaseous envelope that surrounds the Earth. It is a collection of gases, vapour and particulates surrounding the Earth. The atmosphere is very important to life on this planet because, firstly, it acts as a system for cycling and recycling carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen; living things transform these elements into sources of carbohydrates and proteins for nourishment(营养品). Secondly, it protects us from invisible threats such as the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Thirdly, it protects the Earth’s surface from rapid heating during the day and rapid cooling down at night. Lastly, it provides us with the air we breathe as it is our basic life support system; every breath we take requires oxygen in the air. However, human activities are causing the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere. This has resulted in many environmental and health problems. Urban air pollution, acid rain, contamination by toxic chemicals, the lessening of the stratospheric ozone layer and changes in the global climatic system are all important environmental threats to the atmosphere.Air pollutionOur planet is becoming choked with poisonous gases mostly from our daily activities like driving cars, warming our house and running power stations. And pollution doesn’t need a passport to travel around the world.Ozone depletionFor years, chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) were used as a cooling device in freezers and air conditioners. CFCs destroy the ozone layer, the layer that filters(过滤) ultraviolet radiation from the sun which causes eye damage and skin cancer. The greenhouse effectAs more greenhouse gases released in the atmosphere reflect more heat back to the Earth , it causes a rise in temperature, beyond that which is considered to be normal. Rising temperature will cause the climate change, which may lead to a more natural disasters, extinction(灭绝) of some animals and plants. Additionally, passing through surface, while some is lost in space, greenhouse gases reflect back some solar energy and make the atmosphere hotter.Humans are damaging the atmosphere, which serves to be our coat. One day it deserves their right. And the world is warming up, the polar icecaps to melt, sea levels to rise and extremeSection B (10 mark)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.Motherhood may make women smarter and may help prevent dementia(痴呆) in old age by bathing the brain in protective hormones(荷尔蒙) , U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.Tests on rats show that those who raise two or more litters of pups do considerably better in tests of memory and skills than rats who have no babies, and their brains show changes that suggest they may be protected against diseases such as Alzheimer’s(早老痴呆症). University of Richmond psychology professor Craig Kinsley believes his findings will translate into humans.“Our research shows that the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain, including estrogen(雌激素), which we know has many neuroprotective (保护神经的) effects,” Kinsley said.“It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals,” he added in a telephone interview. “They go through pregnancy and hormonal changes.”Kinsley said he hoped public health officials and researchers will look to see if having had children protects a woman from Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related brain decline.“When people think about pregnancy, they think about what happens to babies and the mother from the neck down,” said Kinsley, who presented his findings to the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida.“They do not realize that hormones are washing on the brain. If you look at female animals that have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. But if she goes through pregnancy, she will sacrifice her life for her infant—that is a great change in her behavior that showed in genetic alterations(改变) to the brain.81. Following increasing demands for the return of artistic objects that were removed decades or centuries ago, some of the world’s leading museums have signed a declaration that they will not hand back the ancient artifacts (器物) to their countries of origin. They say people all over the world have only been able to fully appreciate ancient civilizations becausethese museums have provided access to these artistic objects. Over the recent years, it has faced growing pressure to hand back the Elgin Marbles, sculptures taken from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, in the 19th century. Cindy looks like an average doll, with long, blond hair, baby-blue eyes, and a button nose. But loaded with some devices, Cindy is the first doll that can see, think, and do as she’s told. The eagle-eyed Cindy follows in the path of other breakthrough toys like Sony’s barking Robot Aibo, which was the first to popularize voice command in the late 1990s. Cindy takes Aibo’s innovations(创新) one step beyond: she not only follows instructions but also recognizes shapes, colors and words, andremembers. The effect is a doll that appears to be learning. The toy company which produced Cindy Smart spent a decade trying to see how much human nature it could breath into an inanimate(无生命的) object. Its engineers began creating minibots that sense light, sounds, and pressure. However, without the sense of sight, their toys seemed to be lacking in one of the abilities that life-forms use to react to their environment. So how do the engineers make a doll actually see? In Cindy’s case, it’s a multistep process. When presented a text like “I love you”and asked “Can you read this?”Cindy identifies it as one of 70 preprogrammed commands. Then the inbuilt digital camera scans a 15-degree radius in search of number- or letter-shaped objects. Buried in her stomach, Cindy’s 16-bit microprocessor compares the text with her database of 700 words. If it’s a match, “ I love you,” she says.1.This passage most likely appears in a _______________.A. medical reportB. classified adC. science journalD. music magazine2. Schools have tried to limit their use, by allowing them in science lessons, to savetime but by not allowing them to be used in maths classes. When children do their homework, a pocket calculator is a must. Nowadays in Britain, calculators can be used freely in school examinations, and already in many schools the only sound to be heard during a mathematics examination is the sound of children tapping out their answers. Many parents feel that their children are not being given a basic understanding of the facts of maths. “ The process of addition, division, subtraction and multiplication is part of a training in logic which is important for every child. It teaches them to take series of steps necessary in coming to a conclusion,” says a local maths teacher. “ With a calculator, the child can reach the right answer, but have no idea at all how he got there.” Another teacher in the same school disagreed. “Of course the children understand the principles(基本原理) behind what they do on the calculator. It makes no difference to the mental processes they go through, except to make them much faster, and less boring.”“It’s far easier to teach them to completely understand the idea of division and multiplication by making them understand which button they need to push than to talk about apples being cut in pieces,” said another teacher, who uses calculators to keep the interest of his class. In any case, the pocket calculator is here to stay; it’s taking the stress out of mental labor in all sorts of ways.5. From the passage we learn that ______________.A. in Britain students are encouraged by schools to use pocket calculatorsB. parents use the calculators to keep the interest of their childrenC. people have different opinions on whether pocket calculators should be used in maths classesD. all the teachers agree that pocket calculators should be used in classes but not in school examinations6. Which of the following is NOT true?A. Calculators used to be as cheap as a pair of shoesB. Some schools don’t allow the students to use pocket calculators in maths classC. Give an answer to each question as required.EMany artists late in the last century were in search of a means to express their individuality(个性). Modern dance was one of the ways some of these people sought to free their creative spirit. At the beginning there was no exact technique or no foundation from which to build. In later years, trial, error and genius founded the techniques and the principles of the movement. Eventually, innovators even learned from ballet, but first they had to abandon all that was academic so that the new could be discovered. The beginnings of modern dance were happening before Isadora Duncan, but she was the first person to bring the new dance to general audiences and saw it accepted. Her search for a natural movement form sent her to nature. She believed movement should be as natural as the swaying(摇摆) of the tree and the rolling waves of the sea and should be in harmony with the movements of the Earth. Her great contributions are in three areas.First, she began the expansion of the kinds of movements that could be used in dance. Before Duncan danced, ballet was the only type of dance performed in concert. In the ballet the feet and legs were emphasized, with virtuosity(精湛技巧) shown by complicated positions and movements. Duncan performed dance by using all her body in the freest possible way. Her dance came from her heart and soul. She was one of the pioneers who broke tradition so others might be able to develop the art.Her second contribution lies in dance costumes. She gave up corsets(紧身衣), ballet shoes and still costumes. These were replaced with long loose dresses, bare feet, and unbound hair. She believed in the natural body being allowed to move freely, and her dress displayed this idea. Her third contribution ____________. In her performance she used the symphonies of great masters, including Beethoven and Wagner, which was not the usual custom. She was as exciting and eccentric(古怪的) in her personal life as in her dance.1.What would be the best title of the passage? Job authority was judged based on whether a person managed other employees and had power over hiring, firing and pay.Physical health complaints included problems like headaches, body aches, heartburn and tiredness. Psychological complaints included sleep problems, difficulty concentrating and feelings of sadness, worry and anxiety.“This isn‟t to suggest that having authority is …bad‟—in fact, we show it has benefits ... but it is important to identify the negative sides and deal with them.” researcher Scott Schieman said.Schieman said conflicts with co-workers or involvement of work into home life may destroy at physical and mental well-being by creating stress.“These are key stressors that can tax individuals‟ability to function effectively,” Schieman said.56. We are talking about more than one TV-capable device for every man and woman on the planet. People are going to feel connected to the screen in ways they haven‟t in the past.”One way in which this will happen will also be assisted by a more united service of material combining including video content, internet content, broadcast content, and personal content. This content will become much more accessible through remote devices like mobile phones using IPTV technology. The number was busy, so I decided to wait and try again in a few minutes. As the salesman and I stood talking the front door opened and a young man about twenty came into the store pushing himself in a wheelchair. “I need a new pair of shoes,” said the customer. As he turned the corner, there was a blanket across his lap. I was shocked to see that the young man had no legs.“A gift for a friend?” I asked the boy.“No,” he replied. They are for me,” he contin ued, with a smile on his face. I did not know what to say as tears began to fall on the young man‟s cheeks. “What type of accident did you have?” I asked him.“Farm accident,” he sa id, as he tried to clear his voice.“Do you want the cowboy boots?” the salesman asked him.“Oh, yes!” he answered.“I see buying a new pair of shoes still gives you that good feeling you talked about,” I told the young man, as I smiled.“Y es it does.” he said “A nd I may have someone, and his feet to share it with some day.”67. Others want to give their children the skills they‟ll need to compete globally.“There is a huge amount of interest in spending time abroad at all stages of life and increasin gly, as a family with children,” said Maya Frost, author of “The New Global Student…”. She knows American families in every corner of the globe who have made that choice.“There‟s so much more to education than school,” said Tessa Hill, who recently returned to her Houston-area home, after driving her family across North and Central America and Europe in a motor home for 13 month s. “World travel is an education in people, cultures, language, travel skills, street smarts and in how lucky we are to live in the United States.”When Hill and her husband began considering extended global travel, their middle child, Charles, 13, was surprised. “My first reaction was …well, are we really going to do this?‟” Charles said. “But it did sound lik e great fun.”Charles said missing his friends was the hardest part. He stayed in touch via e-mail and made some new friends along the way, playing soccer with kids in France and learning about rugby from youths in Ireland.“I‟d definitely recommend this to other kids,” Charles said. “It was such a great opportunity to see different countries and l earn geography a different way.”To make re-entry smoother, most school officials prefer that families work out an educational plan before they leave town.“It sounds out-of-date, but it really opens up your m ind and your eyes to the world,”said Robbin Goodman, 17, a senior student who spent his junior year skateboarding across Beijing, China, when he wasn‟t studying Chinese history and other core subjects.Had he not already taken a school-sponsored spring break trip with his mom to China in 2007, Robbin said he probably would not have been able to convince his parents to let him go alone for a year. “I knew I would learn Chinese and all that, but my goal was to have a great time,” Robbin said.“The biggest problem for those seriously considering going abroad is dealing with those who are against th e idea,” said Frost.“They gain the ability to take risks and to have confidence in themselves,” said Liz Pearlstein, founder of a glo bal education consulting firm. “When we came home from London, my daughter, who had been painfully shy before we left, said …Mom, now I know there‟s nothing I can‟t do.‟”No one knows exactly how many American families are choosing the global education path, but global education consultants say a growing number of parents are traveling for a year or more with their children. Since we've headed into the snowy part of the year, it seems like a good time to solve a language puzzle that Eskimos have a huge number of words for snow. The idea was popularized by the now well-known expert Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s. His number was approximately five Eskimo words for snow, but somehow the story was so wide spread and romantic that it got out of control and grew bigger and bigger. There are two problems with the concept of Eskimos having tons of words for snow.First, Eskimos speak at least two different languages—Inuit and Yupik. Just as we have talked about how English and many other languages developed from a common language called Proto-Indo-European, Inuit and Yupik come from a different common language called Eskimo-Aleut. So saying Eskimos have 100 words for snow is like saying Europeans have 100 words for kings or queens. It might be telling you something broad about culture, but it isn't really telling you much about language. The second problem is "What is a word?” The Inuit and Yupik languages make words in different ways from how we make words in English. For example, the West Greenlandic word 'siku,' (sea ice), is used as the root for 'sikursuit (pack ice), 'Sikuliaq (new ice), and 'sikurluk (melting ice). But it's not that West Greenlandic has so many more words for describing snow than English, it's just that West Greenlandic expresses ideas by combining meaningful units of language together into one word while English uses more phrases and compounds. We express all the same ideas; we just do it a little differently because of the way our language is built. So you're probably still wondering, "If it's not 50 or 100 or 400 words, how many is it?" Well, Woodbury lists 15 that are present in a Yupik dictionary published in 1984, but he says that depending on how you look at it this is not an exact number. It could be 12; it could be 24. But it's certainly not 100.Sometimes, the "hundred words for snow" puzzle is used to argue that because Eskimos have so many words for snow, they think about snow in ways that we can't even begin to imagine—that your language decides or limits your thoughts. Languages are just different. They don't decide what we are able to think about or are not able to think about. I can think about snow floating on water even if we don't have a word for that in English. So when you're out skiing or snowboarding or just shoveling your driveway this winter, don't believe the people who try to tell you that Eskimos have 100 words for snow.(1)Why are Eskimos thought to have so many words for snow?A. Because snow is everywhere where Eskimos live.B. Because the story about it got enriched and believed.C. Because snow is of great importance to Eskimos.D. Because Eskimos have great affection for snow.(2)How does the writer explain the first problem?A. By presenting figures.B. By making comparisons.C. By quoting sayings.D. By adopting idioms.(3)The example of the west Greenlandic word 'siku' shows that .A. the making of words varies from language to languageB. the Inuit and Yupik languages have more words for snowC. the richness of words and phrases leads to different ideasD. more phrases about snow are found in the English language(4)What conclusion can we safely draw from the last two paragraphs?A. Eskimos better understand snow than other people.B. Languages deeply influence people's ability to think.C. There is no point counting Eskimo's expressions for snow.D. What comes into our mind is limited by our language.【答案】(1)B(2)B(3)A(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了爱斯基摩人描述雪的词语虽然多但并非传言中的100多个。
