I’ll only have $ 500 a month.W: Your rent should be about a quarter of that.Text 2W: So, Tom, what do you do in your free time?M: Well, I love sports. Hmm. Hockey, baseball, and skiing are my favorites.W: Wow, you’re a really good athlete!M: No, no, I’ m not. I don’t play those sports. I just watch them on TV.Text 3M: Let me see. I have printed my family name, first name, date of birth, and address. Anything else?W: No. We’ll fill in the rest of it if you’ll just sign your name at the bottom.M: OK, here?Text 4M: It’s a wonderful day, isn’t it ? Want to join me for a swim?W:If you don’t mind waiting while I get prepared.M: Not at all. But be quick, please!Text 5M: I’m expecting to go abroad shortly. So I am very anxious to learn enough English to get along by myself.W:It’s awful to visit a foreign country without being able to use the language.Text 6M: Would you please tell me why you want to work in our kindergarten? You know kids are sometimes so tiresome.W: I love children. I can sing to them and teach them how to dance.M: Then you have worked in a kindergarten before?W: No, but I used to take care of children during summer and winter holidays.M: I see. By the way, do you want to work part-time or full-time?W: I’d prefer part-time.M: When can you work?W: I’ m free every afternoon. So I can work about 20 hours a week.M: OK, Jean, you’re hired. It wasn’t as hard as I thought.M: Well, it was completely within my expectation.W: But don’t you think the answers weren’t clear fo r the last few multiple-choice questions? I just guessed.M: I totally agree. The teacher set a few obstacles for us on purpose. Otherwise everyone would getThis August, we’ll welcome guests from all over the world. Some of them follow their own special culturaltraditions full marks.W: The other tough part was the writing. Though what we were required to do was just write a very short and simple essay, I was confused a lot by the use of Chinese words and sentence structures.M: Hmm, I had the same problem. We should read more and then imitate the writing.W: Gook idea. I believe we will make better progress by practicing more in this way.Text 8M: Hi, Diana.W: Hi, Mike! Nice to see you again.M: Me too. Diana, we have a lecture this afternoon. It’s on English culture. Would you like to join us?W: Oh, I’d love to, but you know, I have a computer class this afternoon.M: A computer class?W: Yes. It’s a compulsory course. Dr. Rich is very strict, and he won’t let us pass if we are absent from his class three times or more.M: Oh, poor you. Are you taking a business communication class?W: No, not this term.M: Is it optional or compulsory?W: Optional, I think what do you think about it?M: Very difficult, I would say. We have a lot of work to do this term and I have already handed in five essays. W: Really? Do you have a term paper?M: Yes, a 3000-word paper.W: That’s torture. Oh, I’m not cut out for it.M: Come on! I know you are!Text 9M: Hey, Linda, did you get that letter about the new options for food service next year?W: Not yet, are there a lot of changes?M: There sure are. Instead of paying one fee to cover all meals for the whole school year, we are now able to choose how many meals a week we want and can contract just for that amount. We still have to pay the whole year at the beginning, but we can choose to buy seven, ten, fourteen or twenty-one meals per week. They give you a card with the number of meals you get each week marked on it.W:That’s a big change, Tom, and a complicated system.M: Yeah, but it will be much better for people who don’t eat three meals a day, seven days a week in the cafeteria because they don’t have to pay for meals they don’t eat.W:So what’s the deal for those who do eat at school all the time?M: It’s better for them too, because the more meals you contract for, the cheaper each one is.W: I see. It still sounds rather complicated.M: True. It took me several hours to figure it out. I decided to go with the ten-meal plan.W: Why is that?M: Well, I never eat breakfast and I often go away on weekends. So the ten-meal plan gives me lunch and dinner every weekday at a fairly low price. And I won’t be paying for meals I don’t usually eat.Text 10. It’s important for us to know about them.In many countries, such as Thailand, India and Malaysia, people believe that the left hand is unclean. So it’s not proper to use one’s left hand to hold food, touch others or pass objects. Doing so may offend certain guests. Some Westerners may be offended if you touch them or their personal things --- even by accident. If this happens, say sorry politely. Some elderly Westerners may be offended if you try to help them without their agreement.People think numbers can be lucky or unlucky. Some Westerners avoid the number 13 because they believe it is unlucky. Muslims do not eat pork, and some words like pig are not considered proper. People from Brazil, Italy and Pakistan do not give handkerchiefs as gifts. They believe a handkerchief is closely connected with unhappy feelings. Wine is not sent as a gift in many parts of western and central Asia, where many Muslims live.。

She was their neighbor. Yet none of the 32 helped her. Not one even called the police. Was this in gunman cruelty? Was it lack of feeling about one’s fellow man?Not so, say scientists John Barley and Bib Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to seek the reasons why people didn’t act. They found that a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice that is an emergency.Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall to the side-walk. Is he having a heart attack? Is he in a coma from diabetes(糖尿病)? Or is he about to sleep off a drunk? Is the smoke coming into the room from a leak in the air conditioning? Is it steam pipes? Or is it really smoke from a fire? It’s not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency.Second, and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible. He must feel that he must help, or the person won’t get the help he needs. The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They had college students in to be tested. Some came alone. Some came with one or two others. And somecame in large groups. The receptionist started them off on the tests. Then she went into the next room. A curtain divided the testing room and the room into which she went. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of file cabinets falling and a cry for help. All of this had been pre-recorded on a tape-recorder.Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped. In other words, in a group, Americans often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn’t. They do not feel any direct responsibility. Are people bothered by situations where people are in trouble? Yes. Scientists found that the people were emotional, they sweated, they had trembling hands. They felt the other person’s trouble. But they did not act. They were in a group. Their actions were shaped by the actions of those they were with.5.The purpose of this passage is ____________.A.to explain why people fail to act in emergenciesB.to explain when people will act in emergenciesC.to explain what people will do in emergenciesD.to explain how people feel in emergencies6.The researchers have conducted an experiment to prove that people will act in emergencies when ____________.A.they are in pairs B.they are in groupsC.they are alone D.they are with their friends7.The main reason why people fail to act when they stay together is that ____________. A.they are afraid of emergenciesB.they are unwilling to get themselves involvedC.others will act if they themselves hesitateD.they do not have any direct responsibility for those who need help8.The author suggests that ____________.A.we shouldn’t blame a person if he fails to act in emergenciesB.a person must feel guilty if he fails to helpC.people should be responsible for themselves in emergenciesD.when you are in trouble, people will help you anywayFilmmaker Jennifer Nelson had to pay $1,500 to have “Happy Birthday to You” sung in the movie she’s making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for “Happy Birthday to You” since 1988.“I never thought the song was owned by anyone,” Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times. “I thought it belonged to everyone.”Nelson’s movie is a documentary — a film that uses pictures and/or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events — and is actually about the history of the “Happy Birthday” song itself. Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in place of the original lyrics to th e tune of the Hill sisters’ song.A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics. Historians also say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the “Happy Birthday” song, but they believe it was being sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.Nelson’s lawyers say this piece of music’s history proves that “Happy Birthday to You” belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.Experts estimate that Warner/ Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Music Group, has made about $2 million a year from licensing fees for “Happy Birthday to You.”Nels on’s lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for use of the “Happy Birthday” song. 9.Jennifer Nelson had to pay Warner Music Group to ____________.A.own the copyright on a song B.have a song sung in her movie C.have it play a song in her movie D.have it write a song for her movie 10.The history experts’ statement can prove that the “Happy Birthday” song ____________. A.has always been very popularB.has more than 200 years’ historyC.does not belong to Warner Music GroupD.was initially owned by another company11.According to Nelson’s lawyers, to sing the “Happy Birthday” song, people ____________. A.should pay the Hill sistersB.need not pay for any purposeC.should pay Warner Music GroupD.need not pay except for commercial use12.If the court supports Nelson’s lawyers’ claim, ____________.A.Warner will return about $8 millionB.she can obtain the copyright on the songC.Warner will have to pay her for her damagesD.she only needs to pay a little money to use the songWe can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? And Paul - why didn’t pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car? When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends - or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” That’s being friendly. But lucky dog? There’s a bit of en vy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the dog bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.13.This passage is mainly about ____________.A.how to interpret what people sayB.what to do when you listen to others talkingC.how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with peopleD.why we go wrong with people sometimes14.According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that____________.A.we fail to listen carefully when they talkB.people tend to be annoyed when we check what they sayC.people usually state one thing but mean anotherD.we tend to doubt what our friends say15.The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to ____________.A.being friendly B.a bit of envyC.lucky dog D.your luck二、七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Before the war, there had been a huge pool of female labour, consisting largely ofyoung, single women. Many jobs were closed to them and they were effectively restricted toworking in domestic service and selling-goods business. Wartime production requirements, however, combined with the loss of the men who entered the military, provided women with theopportunity to move into a far wider range of jobs.T he response to the US government’s request for more women workers was amazing and thechanges marvelous.ln 1941,there were 14.6 million women workers; by 1944 the number hadgrown to over 19.4 million. At one point during those wars, more than 50 percent of Americanwomen worked and by 1945 half of all women workers were over 35 years old.Women were particularly active in the defense industries. Between 1940 and 1944 womenworking in enterprises that produced goods increased by 141 percent. In Detroit in 1943 , womenmade up 91 percent of the new hirings in 185 war plants. Over 10 percent of all shipbuilderswere women. Most of these jobs came with a "pink-slip" attached,as women understood thatthey would be dismissed when the men returned from the war. Women were also frustrated byunfair pay differentials, for men were paid more money for doing the same job. With the end ofthe war and armymen being sent home, women were released twice as fast as men. In 1945,three-quarters of the women in aircraft and shipbuilding were let go,and women in the carindustry decreased from 25 percent t0 7 percent. Although women found their work satisfyingand liberating, postwar publicity focused on women's duty to help the returning soldiers fit inwith society by "making him the man of the home again". When the war ended, many womenleft work to take up the duties of homemaking and raising children.21. Before World War II,women in the USA had jobs mostly related to .A. aircraft productionB. shipbuildingC. sales businessD. defense industries22. When women were offered jobs in industries, they knew that their jobs would be _A. temporaryB. permanentC. frustratingD. highly paid23. When the war ended, media made women believe that .A. their work was satisfyingB. their work was worthwhileC. they should help the armyD. they should take care of the familyBThe Great Plague<瘟疫> of London in 1665 was the last in a long series of plague thatfirst began in London in June 1499.1t killed between 75,000 and 100,000. First suspected inlate 1664,it began to spread eastwards in April 1665 from the poor suburb of St. Giles to thecrowded and dirty communities on its way to the walled City of London. The Great Plague at Its PeakBy September 1665 ,the death rate had reached 8,000 per week. Helpless city authoritiesbegan to abandonquarantine<隔离> measures. Houses containing the dead and dying were nolonger locked. London's mournful silence was broken by the noise of carts carrying the dead forburial in churches or public plague pits.Well-off residents soon fled to the countryside, leaving the poor behind in poor oldcommunities.Thousands of dogs and cats were killed to remove a feared source of contagion<传染>,and piles of rotting garbage were burned. Doctors cut swellings and bled black spots inattempts to cure plague victims.Plague Orders prohibited churches from keeping dead bodies in their buildings duringpublic assemblies or services, and carriers of the dead had to identify themselves and could not mix with the public.Samuel Pepys: Eyewitness AccountsIn his famous diary,Samuel Pepys,a member of Parliament, conveyed the sad image ofdesperate people wandering the streets in search of relief from the ruins of the plague. His notes during 1665 indicated the severity of London's Great Plague. In July,he mourned "the sad news of the death of so many in the community, forty last night, the bell always going either for deaths or burials." A month later, when London's death rate rose sharply, Pepys noted thatsurvivors "are forced to carry the dead to be buried by daylight, the nights not enough to do itThe Plague Declines and the Government ReactsBy February 1666,the Great Plague had nearly run its course. It died out during the GreatFire that same year and never returned. Central parts of London were rebuilt with wider streetsto relieve crowding and better waste water systems to improve public cleanliness. New PlagueOrders were issued in May 1666,which banned the burial of future plague victims in churchesand small churchyards, enforced the use of quicklime <生石灰> at chosen burial sites, andstrictly prohibited opening graves less than one year after burial as a safeguard against thespread of infection.24.In the course of the Great Plague,it was a common practice to.A. keep dead bodies in the church buildingsB. burn piles of rotting garbage in the streetsC. carry the dead for church burials in the daytimeD. unlock the houses containing the dead and dying25.lt can be inferred from the passage that .A. dogs and cats were certain to spread the plagueB. doctors' treatment of plague victims was effectiveC. city authorities allowed rich residents to go to the countrysideD. quarantine measures were powerless in preventing the plague26. How did Samuel Pepys feel when the bell was going all the night during the Great Plague?A. Frightened.B. Relieved.C. Sorrowful.D. Moody.27. What's the main purpose of this writing?A. To blame poor public cleanliness for plague.B. To inform readers of what happened in the Great Plague.C. To show that plague was closely related to church activities.D. To prove that plague could be controlled by humans.CFamous writer Edgar Allan Poe wrote 70 poems and 66 short stories during his life, butpublished only one novel. That book, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon, Pym of Nantucket, isfiction, focusing on Pym's bad luck on a whaling ship. The novel, published in 1838,involves an attempted rebellion of the whaling ship. Pym andtwo others drive back the rebels, killing or throwing overboard all but one. The spared rebel, named Richard Parker,is kept aboard in order to help operate the ship. But as the shipoverturns,it has no adequate food. Parker suggests that cannibalism<食人> is the only wayout, and they draw straws to determine the victim. Parker loses and becomes dinner. But in 1846 a real-life Richard Parker died in a shipwreck<船难> . He and 20 0thers wereon board the doomed Francis Spaight, which sank, killing all on board. It was a merecoincidence,as it involved neither rebellion nor cannibalism. In 1884,the coincidence became extremely horrible. A boat named the Mignonette sank, and four people went into a lifeboat. And just like in Pym's tale, the four found themselveslacking food and were desperate. They did not draw straws;however, two of the remaining threesimply killed the youngest,a cabin boy who had fallen unconscious. All three then dined on thenow-dead 17 year old. The cabin boy's name,of course, was Richard Parker. As for rebellion, one needs to travel back t0 1797, before Poe penned his novel–althoughthere is little evidence that Poe had known about this Richard Parker or intentionally chose hisname for the Pym novel. That year, another man named Richard Parker led a rebellion of theBritish Naval base at Nore, taking over a number of ships. But as food was running out,Parkerordered "his" fleet to head toward France. The ship he was on followed this order but none ofthe other ships did,and Parker was arrested then was hanged as punishment. This series of coincidences has not gone entirely unnoticed. In 2001,author Yann Martelpublished The Life of Pi,which was made into a movie for release in November of 2012.lt tells the story of a man who finds himself trapped on a lifeboat with a few animals, including aBengal tiger. Martel showed respect for the shipwrecked men spoken about above by naming thetiger Richard Parker. And while there is probably nothing to this strange occurrence, if yourname is Richard Parker, you may want to stay away from boats.28. The underlined part " draw straws" < Para.2> suggests someone will be chosen toA. deal with strawsB. enjoy a good opportunityC. make a clever decisionD. do something unpleasant29. What made the coincidence in 1884 extremely terrible?A. Cannibalism without drawing straws.B. Shipwreck and rebellion.C. Rebellion and cannibalism.D. Hanging and cannibalism.30. What can be learnt about the name Richard Parker?A. It was chosen on purpose by Allan Poe.B.lt seemed connected with strange coincidences.C.It was popular both in fiction and in reality.D.It was originally a name for a Bengal tiger.31. To those Richard Parkers who wish to sail on the sea, this passage makes for _A. a complete nonsenseB. an accurate predictionC. an interesting warningD. an impressive jokeDWhat is the main testing ground of fears about incomplete or inadequate child rearing? Thecollege admission process. If you are afraid you don't discipline your children enough, the evidence of parental failure is right there in front of everyone. The child is not filling out her college applications !lf you are afraid that you have allowed your children to watch too much television and settle for low grades, you will have to answer for the consequences. The over-involvement of many parents in the process is,from my perspective,a cover for this deep parental anxiety: Did I do a good job with this child? Did I do everything I needed todo for this child? Is this child going to have a good life? I have seen many parents, dive backinto their children's lives at college admission time, trying to fill all of their wisdom anddiscipline into their children at the last moment.Parents may need to be sure as their children leave the nest that they really have taughtthem how to fly. Since it is impossible to assess the quality of what parents have done for theirchildren at this point, the next best thing is the status of the college to which the child isadmitted. From the point of an anxious parent, an "Ivy league college" child is proof of betterchild rearing than a "small college" child.I once sat with a talented, weak senior girl and her brilliant parents. She,they, and theschool had to decide whether she should remam m school or go into a hospital. In light of her anorexia <厌食>,the school recommended strongly that she not file her early application toPrinceton. Upon hearing this, the girl looked at the adults in the room and said,"If I can't applyearly to Princeton,l'll die. " Her parents were also eager to have her get into Princeton. Whydid they all need this so desperately?Because,in this case, something was wrong in the family. Due to some weakness in herupbringing, this childwas not happy or self-confident. Yet she was eighteen, the culture requiredher to leave home. The psychological solution for them all was the comforting vision of a greatcollege. Somehow going there would make her life fine and defend her parents' child rearing.Such fears about letting go of an unfinished child exist in all families. How can we let go ofa child who is still so young in so many ways? It is painful and has no cure except time andhope. For parents looking for a painkiller, the college admission process is where they can workout their anxieties.32. What does the underlined word "rearing" < Para.l> mean?A. Adopting.B. Raising,C. Educating.D. Spoiling.33.What is implied in parents' over-involvement in their children's college admission process inthe author's view?A. Care and concern.B. Over protection.C. Great parental wisdom.D. Deep parental anxiety.34. What should parents do according to the author?A. Help children fill out their college applications.B. Fallinto children's lives at college admission time.C. Prepare children for the future before they leave home.D. Access the quality of what they have done for their children.35. According tothe passage, what can defend the parents' child rearing?A.A great college.B.Time and hope.C. Confidence of children.D.Independence of children.第二节〔共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.I often went fishing up in Maine during the summer. Personally I am very fond ofstrawberries and cream. but I have found that for some strange reason, fish prefer insects. 36 Ithought about what they wanted.I didn't bait the hook with strawberries and cream.Rather,l swung an insect or a grasshopper<蚱蜢>in front of the fish and said: "Wouldn't youlike to have that?"37That is what Lloyd George,Great Britain's Prime Minister during World War I,did. When someone asked him how he managed to stay in power after the over wartime leaders - Wilson,Orlando and Clemenceau - had been forgotten,he replied that if his staying on top might beowing to any one thing,it would be to his having learned that it was necessary to bait the hookto suit the fish. Why talk about what we want? That is childish. Absurd. 38 But no one else is.Therest of us are just like you: we are interested in what we want.39Remember that tomorrow- when you are trying to get someone to do something. If,for example, you don't want your children to smoke, don't argue with them, and don't talk about what you want; but show them that cigarettes may keep them from making the basketball team or winning the hundred-yard dash.40Before you speak, pause and ask yourself: "How can I make this person want to do it?"A. Of course, you are interestedin what you want and you are always interested in it.B. Why not use the same common sense when fishing for people?C. She was their neighbor. Yet none of the 32 helped her. Not one even called the police. Was this in gunman cruelty? Was it lack of feeling about one‘s fellow man?Not so, say scientists John Barley and Bib Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to seek the reasons why people didn‘t act. It‘s not always ea sy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency.Second, and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible. He must feel that he must help, or the person won‘t get the help he needs. The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They had college students in to be tested. Some came alone. Some came with one or two others. And some came in large groups. They, themselves, needn‘t. They do not feel any direct re sponsibility. Are people bothered by situations where people are in trouble? Yes. Scientists found that the people were emotional, they sweated, they had trembling hands. They felt the other person‘s trouble. But they did not act. They were in a group. Their actions were shaped by the actions of those they were with.25. The purpose of this passage is ____________.A. to explain why people fail to act in emergenciesB. to explain when people will act in emergenciesC. to explain what people will do in emergenciesD. to explain how people feel in emergencies26. The researchers have conducted an experiment to prove that people will act in emergencies when ____________.A. they are in pairsB. they are in groupsC. they are aloneD. they are with their friends27. The main reason why people fail to act when they stay together is that ____________.A. they are afraid of emergenciesB. they are unwilling to get themselves involvedC. others will act if they themselves hesitateD. they do not have any direct responsibility for those who need help28. The author suggests that ____________.A. we shouldn‘t blame a person if he fails to act in emergenciesB. a person must feel guilty if he fails to helpC. people should be responsible for themselves in emergenciesD. when you are in trouble, people will help you anywayCFilmmaker Jennifer Nelson had to pay $1,500 to have ―Happy Birthday to You‖ sung in the movie she‘s making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for ―Happy Birthday to You‖ since 1988.―I never thought the song was owned by anyone,‖ Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times. ―I thought it belonged to everyone.‖Nelson‘s movie is a documentary — a film that uses pictures and/or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events —and is actually about the history of the ―Happy Birthday‖ song itself. Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called ―Good Morning to All‖ in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words ―happy birthday to you‖ inplace of the original lyrics to the tune of the Hill sisters‘ song.A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the ―Happy Birthday to You‖ lyrics. Historians also say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the ―Happy Birthday‖ son g, but they believe it was being sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.Nelson‘s lawyers say this piece of music‘s history proves that ―Happy Birthday to You‖ belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.Experts estimate that Warner/ Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Music Group, has made about $2 million a year from licensing fees for ―Happy Birthday to You.‖Ne lson‘s lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for use of the ―Happy Birthday‖ song.29.Jennifer Nelson had to pay Warner Music Group to ____________.A. own the copyright on a songB. have a song sung in her movieC. have it play a song in her movieD. have it write a song for her movie30.The history experts‘ statement can prove that the ―Happy Birthday‖ song ____________.A. has always been very popularB. has more than 200 years‘ historyC. does not belong to Warner Music GroupD. was initially owned by another company31.According to Nelson‘s lawyers, to sing the ―Happy Birthday‖ song, people ____________.A. should pay the Hill sistersB. need not pay for any purposeC. should pay Warner Music GroupD. need not pay except for commercial use32.If the court supports Nelson‘s lawyers‘ claim, ____________.A. Warner will return about $8 millionB. she can obtain the copyright on the songC. Warner will have to pay her for her damagesD. she only needs to pay a little money to use the songDWe can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? When I got thatgreat job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? And Paul - why didn‘t pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car? When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it‘s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends - or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don‘t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, ―You‘re a lucky dog.‖ That‘s being friendly. But lucky dog? There‘s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn‘t see it himself. But bringing in the dog bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn‘t think you deserve your luck.Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn‘t important. It‘s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven‘t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone‘s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.33. This passage is mainly about ____________.A. how to interpret what people sayB. what to do when you listen to others talkingC. how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with peopleD. why we go wrong with people sometimes34. According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that ____________.A. we fail to listen carefully when they talkB. people tend to be annoyed when we check what they sayC. people usually state one thing but mean anotherD. we tend to doubt what our friends say35. The underlined word ―it‖ in the second paragraph refers to ____________.A. being friendlyB. a bit of envyC. lucky dogD. your luck第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
