高考英语一轮复习课时提能练5Wishyouwerehere(含解析)牛津译林版课时提能练(五)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2019·贵阳适应性考试)When the weather's hot,do you enjoy a glass of Brad's Drink while watching your TV made by Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering, and surfing the web using a search engine called BackRub?No?Neither do I.That's because all these companies have changed their names.Brad's Drink is now Pepsi. The mouthful that was Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering has become, simply,Sony. And BackRub is now known as Google.Though I must admit, the idea of a back massage does sound good right now!Joking aside, choosing the right name for your startup is a serious matter.Think of the case of a small Canadian company called Research In Motion, who in 1998 had just developed a hightech mobile phone that could send emails. They were torn between names like MegaMail and ProMail. Then they sought the help of consulting firm Lexicon, who specialize in brand names. They had other ideas. They brainstormed words connected to enjoyment and freshness.Someone said“strawberry”.Then someone else suggested“blackberry”.Lexicon's boss added two capital letters, and there you have it:BlackBerry was born.Since then it has sold over 33 million handsets to customers around the world.Would it have sold as well if it was called MegaMail?Who knows?Recently,BlackBerry sales have been overtaken by Android phones and Apple's iPhone.Lexicon's founder David Plaeek is a big fan of simple brand names like those Apple chooses:the iPhone. They took a household word and by putting one letter in front of it,it ends up being game changing. So,for all you entrepreneurs(企业家) out there, make sure you allow time to develop a catchy and memorable name.Think about what makes your company different. What's your USP(独特卖点)?Maybe you can reflect that in your name. What about you? What would you call a company if you had one?【语篇解读】本文主要讨论了给公司或产品起名字的艺术。

Unit 2 The environment一、阅读理解.Vinegar makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even use it to clean your windows。
And now, according to scientists,it may even the planet’s population survive climate change.Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan found that growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world's supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis,a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought—like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar. After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants, before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive. "In the experiment, we targeted the staple foods of the world—rice, wheat and maize—and the basic plant of breeding species, rapeseed(油菜籽)," JongMyong Kim, co—author of the study, told Popular Science magazine.Kim also told the magazine he’s already been in touch with people all over the world who are interested in trying this simple andcost-effective method out for themselves from flower growing companies to amateur gardeners。
课时跟踪练(一) Welcome to the unit & Reading Ⅰ.阅读理解APeople and the sources of air pollution are found in the same places. This means that cities with large populations have the biggest problem of dirty air. Air pollution is caused by many different things.A major source of air pollution is the gas fumes (烟雾) from cars. Statistics show that 93 percent of all auto trips are within cities. Another major source of dirty is the burning of coal and oil for energy. This energy is needed to make electricity. Of course, much more electricity is used in the city than in the countryside. On the average, we throw away more trash and garbage than the year before. The burning of garbage contributes to air pollution. Many major industries are also responsible for the dirty air in the around cities. The fumes from iron, steel, chemical, and petroleum (石油) production add particles (微粒) to the air.The effects of air pollution range from loss of clear vision, mild headaches to death. Wherever coal and oil are used for fuel, fumes may kill trees and plants and cause metal to corrode (腐蚀). In some larger cities, these fumes endanger the life of human beings by contributing to lung diseases and causing early deaths.语篇解读:本文主要介绍了城市空气污染的原因与后果,旨在呼吁人们停止继续污染空气。

Unit 2 The environment一、阅读理解.A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlours(客厅) where loved pets rest。
Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to their pets. This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture。
课时规范练5(模块二Unit2)A(2017·内蒙古二模)The journey two divers made some time ago to the deepest point on the earth makes us realize how much of the world still remains to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball to find out if there were any ocean currents(水流) or signs of life.It was necessary to set out early,so that the ball would come to the surface in daylight, and be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it.The divers began preparations early in the morning and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water. The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers(层) of water. In time the temperature dropped to the freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone telling how they felt. Then,at a depth of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30,000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud, cracking noise.Even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instantdeath.Luckily, though,it was only one of the outer windows that had broken.Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of “dust” made up of small dead seacreatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great water pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long,as the heat from them made the water boil.Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint but clear voices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up,arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none was worse for their experience.1.What was the purpose of the divers’ journey to the deepest point on the earth?A.To know if there were steps in the great depths.B.To explore if the telephone worked well in the great depths.C.To find out if there were water currents or life in the great depths.D.To learn if people could stand the severe cold in the great depths.2.Why did the divers set out early in the morning?A.They could avoid the cold at night.B.They could see at the bottom of the ocean.C.They could return to the surface during the day.D.They could stay long at the bottom.3.How about the telephone as the divers went down to the ocean floor?A.It kept working all the time.B.It stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again at 30,000 feet.C.It stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again after they reached the bottom.D.It stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again when they returned to the same depth.4.What did the diver find on the ocean floor?A.Fish were not swimming freely in the dark water.B.There was no life but some small dead sea creatures.C.Fish were swimming as freely as they did near the surface.D.Fish were not swimming freely under the high water pressure.〚导学号23500014〛B(2017·江西丰城月考)Robert Ballard was born in 1942.From an 课时练1阅读理解提速练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·云南高三调研)For the growing number of Chinese heading west to work and study, there’s plenty they find surprising. Upon arrival in the West, many Chinese find they have to firstly put on the brakes. Li Feng, raised in northern China and now based in England, agrees.“The only thing Chinese people would be shocked by in Britain is how long it takes to do things,”he says.“For instance, in China if you want to open a bank account, you don’t wait and you just do it at the counter.” Out-of-hours and weekend work is standard in China, but in Britain, the weekend is for family and friends.Chen Lei, who left his homeland 12 years ago and is now a lawyer in Belgium says office politics are simpler in Europe, partly because the hierarchy(等级制度) is less rigid than in China, where the boss really is the boss and social class in the office is very obvious and important. As a result, staff in a Chinese company think very carefully about how to present their views and ideas. Employees in the West can share their opinions more freely. In China you should have the wisdom to say something in an appropriate way. But in Europe you can just say what you want. The newest Chinese arrivals have a very different view to previous generations, according to Sharon Jin, who moved to the U.S. 20 years ago and is now an American citizen. “Almost 100% of people of my generation who came to the States want to get a green card,”she says. “But today younger Chinese plan to work for 10 years here and then return to China to buy a house or look a fter their parents.” While a record number of 523,700 students left China to study elsewhere in 2015, roughly 70%-80% of students abroad have been returning in recent years because of the attractive job market at home, according to the Chinese Ministry of Education (CME).【解题导语】以前,中国人去国外都想获得绿卡,而现在他们计划在国外工作十年以后,再回来买房或照顾父母。

Over time, some of their property and many of the surrounding landscapes became the Mohonk Preserve, which has since grown to 8,000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers. But the Mohonk Preserve also has a long scientific legacy. In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area.Megan Napoli is a research ecologist with the Mohonk Preserve in New York. She thinks Smiley's efforts produced a rare long-term data set of observations, which is useful for studying the impacts of climate change. For instance, other research has shown that songbirds are migrating north earlier and earlier in the spring. It's important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insects' emergence. So they need to be here to establish their nesting sites and lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, they have their baby birds, so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant.Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations. Her results suggest that they do.Napoli found that short-distance migrants that spend their winters in the southern U.S. now arrive an average of eleven days earlier than they did in the 1930s. Long-distance migrants that overwinter in the tropics arrive roughly a week earlier. Napoli presented her results at a recent meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Portland, Oregon.Meanwhile, who knows how many other long-term, personal data collections like Smiley's are out there, waiting to be discovered and to help improve official attempts to track the planet's changes.8.What do we know about Dan Smiley?A.He lived in New York City.B.He was a scientific researcher.C.He owned the Mohonk Preserve.D.He kept a record of wildlife.9.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.The birds' birth. B.The birds' arrival.C.The nest building. D.The insects' appearance.10.What does Megan Napoli think of Smiley's long-term record?A.It has affected the birds' migration.B.It challenges the previous research.C.It has changed official attitudes.D.It is of great value to her research.11.What can we learn from Napoli's research?A.It is totally based on Smiley's long-term notes.B.Scientists have to rely on more personal data.C.Climate change affects birds' migration time.D.It contributes greatly to other personal research.D(2019·太原模拟)Architect Vincent Callebaut recently introduced a plan for high-flying teams of self-sufficient aircraft that are one part of airship cities and one part of hydrogen-producing floating farms. Called hydrogenase (氢化酶), the aircraft are 100% emission-free and are capable of creating hydrogen without consuming land needed for crops or forests. We've seen futuristic airships before, but never one that doubles as a hydrogen-producing flying farm! Designed for the South China Sea near Hainan, Callebaut's hydrogenase airships are completely self-sufficient and contain a specialized breed of seaweed that absorbs sunlight andCO2 to produce hydrogen.According to the architects, “The output obtained from microseaweed is superior to that of using farming to produce biofuel. 330 grams of seaweed produce 1,000 liters of hydrogen per day, while soybeans produce roughly 1,000 liters of oil per hectare (公顷). A hectare of seaweed could thus produce much more biofuel than a hectare of soybeans.”In addition to providing a clean source of renewable energy, hydrogenase airships offer an eco-friendly means of transportation. Although certainly slower than ordinary planes, the airships are nearly silent and require a very little basic structure to take off and land. The architects also suggest that the airships should provide disaster relief for remote areas, and be used as flying hospitals and aid centers. Each hydrogenase airship is covered with flexible photovoltaic cells (光电池).The interior features room for housing, offices, scientific laboratories, and entertainment, and a series of bioremediating (生物降解) vegetable gardens provide a source of food while recycling waste. Hydrogenase is certainly for the futuristic concept, but it does use a set of technologies being developed today — and perhaps one day we will see fantastic ideas like this develop.12.What do we know about Vincent Callebaut?A.He is working on a floating farm.B.He compares many different airships.C.He has developed a self-sufficient aircraft.D.He has come up with a plan for new aircraft.13.Why do the hydrogenase airships contain seaweed?A.To produce oxygen. B.To create hydrogen.C.To absorb hydrogen. D.To absorb harmful gases.14.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A.Farms with seaweed produce more food.B.Farms with seaweed are more efficient at producing biofuel.C.Soybeans can't be planted on the airships.D.Farms with seaweed will surely replace traditional farmland.15.What does the text mainly talk about?A.The advantages of the airships.B.The disadvantages of the airships.C.The airships are renewable energy sources.D.When and where the airships can be used.Ⅱ.阅读七选五(2019·贵阳适应性考试)How do students manage to complete a huge number of assignmentsand still find the time to have fun?
