英语作品赏析之【荆棘鸟】摘要There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life ,more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it leaves the nest it searches for a thorn tree ,and does not rest until it has found one. Then ,singing among the savage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And,dying,it rises above its own agony to out- carol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen ,and God in His heaven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain…… Or so says the legend.——the Legend about the Thorn Birds 关键词荆棘鸟爱和命运1.作者简介考琳•麦卡洛(Colleen McCullough),1937年6月1日生于澳大利亚新南威尔士州的惠灵顿,澳大利亚当代著名作家。

”Introduction About The Thorn Birds《荆棘鸟》介绍Published by Harper and Row in 1977, The Thorn Birds was a multi-generational sagai that traced a sheep-farming family and that featured a heroine, Meggie Cleary, who falls desperately and impossibly in love with a Catholic priest, Ralph de Bricassart. At the time of its publication, the novel was compared to Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind. This is the story of the Cleary family, who moved to Australia in the early 1900s to work Drogheda, a vast sheep station. Employing on a large canvas that encompasses two world wars and the Great Depression2, McCullough lets the main characters take tums telling the story from 1915 to 1969. But the heart of the book is the forbidden love between Meggie-Fee and Paddy Clea ry’s only daughter-and Ralph de Bricassart, the handsome parish priest. Meggie falls in love with Ralph de Briccasart, who is a good and ambitious man who certainly does nothing to encourage this love, but who certainly retums it as he regards Meggie as the daughter he can never have. As Meggie matures, he comes to regard her in a more romantic way. A great struggle arises between this love on the one hand and his ambition to become a cardinal3 or perhaps more, on the other. Family secrets, forbidden love, and the struggles of working in a hard new land intertwine in this novel. When published, it received rave reviews. It holds up just as well for new and retuming readers.

¾£¼¬Äñ¸ß¶þÓ¢Óï¶Áºó¸Ð¡¡¡¡After reading this book I think it is necessary to share the old legend to everybody . ¡¡¡¡There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life, more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it leaÒ»ves the nest it searches for a thorn tree, and does not rest until it has found one. Then, singing among the saÒ»vage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to out- carol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen, and God in HisheaÒ»ven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain ¡¡¡¡¡Meggie Cleary is just like the bird, and Ralph is her superlative song.¡¡¡¡I read the book then watched the movie, both of them gaÒ»ve me great shock, I really admire Meggie, she had the courage to use her whole life to love Ralph, never gaÒ»ve up. She believed that she would love Ralph only in her life. But I don¡¯t like Meggie¡¯s attitude to love, Ralph is a Father, and he mustn¡¯t love Meggie, they really loved each other, but they are not destined to be together. So in my opinion I think Meggie should give in, she shouldn¡¯t fight with God, Ralph had told her he would serve God forever, so Meggie wouldn¡¯t win. Maybe giving up is a good choice. Their love is painful.¡¡¡¡Tell the turth I don¡¯t like Meggie neither Ralph, Ralph could not give Meggie happniess while Meggie couldn¡¯t support Ralph to concentrate on his work. So they would not haÒ»ve happy life, they only made each other feel sad .¡¡¡¡Frank is my faÒ»vorite role. he was short but strong ,and he was one of the main labor in his family. He didn¡¯t want to be a shepherd, but the family needed him , and he must feed he the sheep so that everybody in his family can live better. Once he escaped from home , but it wassn¡¯t long before his father found him and take him home. I feel so sorry that he had a miserable fate. He longed for freedom but most of his life didn¡¯t belong to himself, it¡¯s really a pity .¡¡¡¡Frank was different to every man in their home, he loved his mother deeply, and he always helped his mother do the housework. he dreamed to be an outstanding boxer. Frank was considerable, and he always try his best to make Meggie feel happy. As Meggie¡¯s oldest brother, he could be worried about Meggie¡¯s faÒ»vorite doll, and he even tried to fixed the doll which was distroyed by Meggie¡¯s other brothers. Frank and Meggie would always tell each other what they thought in their deep heart , and they are close friends.¡¡¡¡I was so sad when I learned that Frank killed a man and he was sent to the prision. It is really a big shock to Meggie, for Frank was the only one who can listen to Meggie¡¯s secrets. She thought she lost Frank forever. I cannot imagine how painful for Frank to spend dozens years in the prision. He once had good dream about his life, but he had to waste most of his life in prision. In my opinion it was Frank¡¯s father that distoryed his life. His father didn¡¯ t give him freedom, and Frank can¡¯t had strong resistance spirits, and because he didn¡¯t control himself and broke the law.Theenergitic Frank will never come to us, and he became a man who didn¡¯t wanna talk. He began to be afraid of the world¡it is really a pity.¡¡¡¡As for Meggie, I think she was a good girl. She was beautiful and smart, but she it was wrong for her to love Ralph. Meggie was an excellent girl, she was able to find an outstanding boy to love her, but she put all her love on Ralph even she married Luke. She married Luke just because Luke looked like Ralph. Meggie wanna be a thorn bird, but I think it was too cruel to her. She was so kind that she shouldn¡¯t stand that king of pain, and I think she was born to haÒ»ve a happy life. I pity for her. ¡¡¡¡Both the story of thorn birds and the legend are painful and beautiful, but not every one can be the thorn birds, because it is not our porpose to haÒ»ve a painful life. We are born to be happy. Olny happiness is the ture meaning of life while the story was written for us to enrich our life. It is a wonderful story.。
The Faint Voice─A Brief Talk on the Western Women’s Faith in Love in The Thorn Birds[Abstract] This paper attempts to explore the novel The Thorn Birds, which shows the different values of love between women and men around the Clearys. The goal of exploring it is not only to state that women’s faith is love, while men’s faith is anything but love, but also to set off the heroine—Meggie, who longs for love and strives perseveringly for love in all her life. Although Meggie suffers a lot when searching fo r her faith, she always keeps loyal to love. What’s more, in order to create the beautiful and moving voice of her love, she would rather offer her life as the greatest sacrifice. The paper also aims at tracing back to Western women’s faith by describing t he heroines’ love stories in some great works written by some famous women novelists. Compared with other heroines’ attitudes and behaviors to their faith, Meggie is stronger, braver, purer and nobler to her faith, for she enriches love with endless vivid vigor and color. She is a perfect woman. However, although Meggie dedicates her life to love, what she gains is just a tragedy; although the Western women go all out for their faith, they are always deeply hurt by the cost of great pain. Therefore, this to pic subtly delineates the fact that the women’s voice for love is still too faint. No matter how wonderful voice they create, they are still incapable of changing men’s non-love faith and overcoming the unequal values of traditional society. This is an unavoidable tragedy not only to Meggie and the Western women, but also to all women in the world from ancient times. They get temporary happiness from love, but with infinite misery. Their voice is too faint to resist tragedy in love. However, women’s lofty f aith brings them a meaningful and significant life, just like the voice of the thorn birds.[Key Words] women; love; faith; voice; The Thorn Birds微弱的呼喊─浅谈《荆棘鸟》中西方女性对爱情的信仰【摘要】本文通过对长篇小说《荆棘鸟》的分析,分别描述了以克利里家族为中心的女性与男性不同的爱情价值观,体现了女性视爱情为终生信仰,而男性却常常选择非爱情的信仰,从而衬托出女主人公梅吉对爱情执着的高贵情操。
