Exploring the cosmos has always been a fascination for humans. The solar system, a collection of celestial bodies orbitingthe Sun, is a marvel of nature that holds countless mysteries and wonders. As we venture into the realm of astronomy, we discover that our solar system is made up of eight planets, each with its own unique characteristics and features.Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is a small, rockyworld with a surface temperature that can reach over 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Venus, known for its thick atmosphere and greenhouse effect, is the hottest planet in our solar system, with surface temperatures that can exceed 900 degrees Fahrenheit.Earth, our home, is the only known planet to support life. It has a diverse range of ecosystems, from the icy poles to the warm equator. The Moon, Earth's only natural satellite, influences our tides and has a profound impact on ourplanet's environment.Mars, the Red Planet, has captivated the imagination of scientists and the public alike with its potential for past and future life. Its surface is covered with iron oxide, giving it a reddish appearance, and it has the largestvolcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons.Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, is a gasgiant with a Great Red Spot, a storm that has been raging for centuries. Its strong magnetic field and numerous moons makeit a fascinating subject for study.Saturn, with its stunning rings, is another gas giant thathas intrigued astronomers. Its rings are made up of countless particles of ice and rock, and it has over 80 moons, including Titan, which has a thick atmosphere and liquid hydrocarbon lakes.Uranus and Neptune, the outermost planets in our solar system, are also gas giants with unique features. Uranus has an unusual tilt, with its axis of rotation almost parallel toits orbit, and Neptune has the fastest winds in the solar system, reaching speeds of up to 1,200 miles per hour.Beyond Neptune, the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud areregions filled with countless icy bodies, including dwarf planets like Pluto, which was demoted from its planetarystatus in 2006 but still holds a special place in our understanding of the outer solar system. The solar system is a dynamic and ever-changing environment, with each celestial body playing a role in the cosmic dance. As we continue to explore and learn more about our cosmic neighborhood, we gain a deeper appreciation for the beautyand complexity of the universe we inhabit.。

It was the time of the Gold Rush.Thousands of people were coming to California to dig for gold. And Levi Strauss came to sell canvas to these gold miners. Canvas was a heavy fabric. So Levi Strauss thought the miners might need it to mend tents. One day Strauss heard a miner said he couldn’t find clothes strong enough for the work he was doing. Strauss got an idea. He quickly took some of his canvas and made it into trousers. These trousers were just what the miners needed. In one day he sold all the trousers he had made.Strauss wanted to make better trousers. So he bought the fabric that was softer than canvas but just as strong. This fabric came from Nimes, a city in France, so the miners called it “denim” and bought more trousers from Strauss. However, denim had no color. Because of this the denim trousers did not look very nice, and they got dirty easily. To solve this problem, Strauss dyed the denim blue.Strauss started a company. And it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!Of course, he isn’t really dead. With luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains are professionals. They do these for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks. There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. However, they do not fall onto hard ground, but onto empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress. And, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood, and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, he has to jump out of the range of the explosion just at the right moment.Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. Try to find out whether your teacher reallydislikes you, or whether something else is going on. Here are some questions to ask yourself:1. Are you the only person being treated badly, or is your teacher rough on the wholeclass? Ask your classmates if they are having trouble with the teacher, too. If they say yes, perhapsyour teacher is having problems outside the school, or is new and at a loss.2. Are you working up to your ability? Maybe you got a C in your last test, and yourteacher told you that you could do better. But the kid sitting beside you got a C, too, and theteacher didn ’t say anything to him! Isn ’t this unfair? Well, it could be that your teacher knows that you could get a better grade if you put more effort into it. Teachers often grade students bydifferent standards. There ’nsothing wrong with beingsensitive, but if you react to criticism quite differently from others, this could be a reason why youthink your teacher doesn ’t like you.4. There are three main steps to get towhere you want to go.First, sit down and write your dreams out. By writing them you will get a better idea ofwhere you really want to go. Imagine yourself at the end of the year or maybe in five years. Whatdo you see? How do people see you? What are you doing? Are you successful?Well, a dream is just that. It ’svaision of how you see yourself in the future. Once youknow the direction in which you want to go, you can begin working on some goals.Second come the goals. Goals are “wants ”. So are dreams, but goals are more specific. Ifyou want to be rich, tell how much money you need to be rich. If you want good grades, tell whatyou mean by “good ”In. fact, the more specific the goal is, the easier it w ill be to get it. Givenumbers and times. Don ’t use words like “lots ”or “more”. They tell exactly what you will do and when you will do it.When you think about what you will do, don’utse words like “try o”r “maybe”B e.sure yourobjectives can be measured. Every day or every week you can say, “Did I do this? ”and youanswer with either a yes or a no. Don ’t leave room for “maybes”.OK. Here is another example. I say I want a “B”in each subject.
As we know, Chongqing has changed a lot. Most of the people feel much safer now. More and more trees are being planted in the city. And every day you can see many old people play sports everywhere. The change makes the people in the city live a happy life. The small survey below is from the people who live in Chongqing. One hundred persons were chosen to answer the questions last week... (1)From the survey, of the people in Chongqing care about health.(2)Most people think working in Chongqing is .
Be the Best of Whatever You AreDouglas Malloch If you can’t be a pine on the top of the hill,Be a scrub in the valley—But be the best little scrub by the side of the rill;Be a bush if you can’t be a tree.If you can’t be a bush, be a bit of the grass,And some highway some happier make;If you can’t be a muskie, then just be a bass—But the liveliest bass in the lake!We can’t all be captains, we’ve got to be crew,There’s some thing for all of us here. There’s big work to do and there’s lesser to do,And the task we must do is the near.If you can’t be a highway then just be a trail,If you can’t be a sun then just be a star.It isn’t by size that you win or you fail一Be the best of whatever you are!

Unit 1 How can we become good learners? If you put your history notes under your pillow and sleep on them the night before an exam, will you do any better in the exam? Most of us have hoped this might help. However, knowledge can’t go through the pillow into your brain. But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn while you are asleep.Scientists aren’t exactly sure how it works, but they have discovered that the brain can learn things during sleeping hours. In one experiment, researchers gave German speakers some Dutch words to learn. Then, they divided them into three groups. The researchers played the Dutch words for people in Group 1 while they were asleep, without telling these German speakers what they were doing. The sound was low so it didn’t wake them up, and only the newly introduced words were used.Another group listened to the same words while they were awake. The researchers found the people in Group 1 were better able to identify and translate the words later. This was true only for the words that were played while they slept. The third group listened to words when they walked. The walkers didn't have the same success in remembering the words as the sleeping group. The researchers later found that people had more slow-wave brain activity all over the night. They said that more slow waves made people have a better memory for the new words.1.When did the researchers play foreign words for people in Group 1 in the experiment?A. Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother looks through (浏览)magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters (海报) with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or printing?
About 2, 000 years ago, paper was invented in China. Then people learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, they could only write books by hand. So, books were expensive and rare (珍贵的)at that time. And because there weren't many books, few people learned to read.
Then printing was invented in China and it developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century. Then people could print books quickly and cheaply (便宜地). As a result, more people learned to read. After that, knowledge and ideas spread quickly.
Today with the help of the Internet we can connect and share information quickly. We can also read newspapers and magazines online. But will the computer replace (替代) books one day? No, I don't think the poster of Yao Ming on my bedroom wall will ever be replaced by a computer of two metres
