(1) Winston Churchill Speech - "We shall fight them on thebeaches"Winston Churchill's speech we shall fight them on the beaches is one of the defining speeches during the Second World War. It uses the technique of repetition to very good effect. We have reproduced an extract of the key lines."I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail.We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."Comprehension Questions1.What did Churchill call upon his people to do in this speech?2.What’s the style of his language?3.What’s the effect of repetition?4.Which words best expressed his iron will?(2) Three biggest challenges facing an English learner1. Developing a passion for learning EnglishAll English learners would like to speak English well. They are excited at the idea of being able to communicate in English fluently. However, they usually don't care about the learning process itself. For most learners, learning English is a duty — something that they have to, but don't want to do. They don't see pleasure in learning English. In short, most learners would like to speak English well but don't like to be learning English. This is the first and biggest problem facing an English learner, because a person who doesn't like to learn English will not learn it well. If you don't love English, English won't love you back!If you want to become a successful learner, you need to like the learning process itself. You need to treat time spent on English as time for pleasure and relaxation. For example, you need to enjoy:●reading English sentences and thinking about their structure●learning new words from a dictionary●writing a correct English sentence by consulting dictionaries, grammar guides, and the Web●practicing the pronunciation of English sounds and wordsIdeally, learning English should be your hobby. You should think of yourself as an English Learner — a person who has chosen learning English as one of their favorite activities.2. Making the first change to one's lifeThe decision to learn English requires changes in your life. For example, deciding that one will read a book in English for 30 minutes every day and keeping to that decision. It's very difficult to make a small, but permanent change to your life, especially if learning English doesn't seem "fun". However, learners should remember that studying English for 15 minutes every day gives you much better results than studying for a whole day once a month.3. Making further changes to one's lifeWhile the first change is the most difficult, each subsequent one is hard, too. A lot of learners take the first step (e.g. they start reading a book in English every day) and stop there. They do not engage in other English-building activities.A good learner will have a set of activities (reading, watching TV, practicing pronunciation, listening to recordings, etc.) and choose from that set according to his or her mood. One activity is not good enough, because (1) you get bored more quickly, and (2) it gives you a range of language skills that is typically too narrow. For example, reading in English can't improve your pronunciation, although it can improve your grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills.)Comprehension Questions1.What seems to be the biggest problem for many English learners according to the beginning part of this article?2.What’s the right attitude toward English?3.What possible changes need to be made in one’s life if he determines to learn English well?4.What are the things that you enjoy doing in English study?(3) THE ENGLISH LANGUAGEWe'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes; but the plural of ox became oxen not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, yet the plural of moose should never bemeese. You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice; yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.If the plural of man is always called men, why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet, and I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth? Then one may be that, and three would be those, yet hat in the plural would never be hose, and the plural of cat is cats, not cose.We speak of a brother and also of brethren, but though we say mother, we never say methren. Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, but imagine the feminine, she, shis and shim. Some reasons to be grateful if you grew up speaking English:1) The bandage was wound around the wound.2) The farm was used to produce produce.3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.4) We must polish the Polish furniture.5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.8) At the Army base, a bass was painted on the head of a bass drum.9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.10) I did not object to the object.11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.13) They were too close to the door to close it.14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.18) After a number of Novocain injections, my jaw got number.19) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.20) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.21) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?22) I spent last evening evening out a pile of dirt..Screwy pronunciations can mess up your mind! For example...If you have a rough cough, climbing can be tough when going through the bough on a tree!Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm goes off by going on. If Dad is Pop, how's come Mom isn't Mop?。

She was excited because she was going to spend five weeks helping biologists from the university perform research on animal behaviour. However, she was also nervous because she would travel with the scientists to Central America, and shehad never been that far from home before. She knew that this was an amazing opportunity, though, and tried not to let her nervousness take control.Rebecca was chosen from among many students who were all competing for a spot on the research team. Rebecca had the best grades and a reputation for being reliable in her work. She also demonstrated creative thinking and showed the most promise in the field of biology. All in all, she was a very talented young woman. Most of her classmates were jealous, but they all still wished her luck and eagerly anticipated many great stories after she returned home at the end of the summer. The first couple of weeks in the field, Rebecca was limited to assisting the scientists. Most of her time was spent categorizing data. It was not the most glamorous work in the world, but she learned a lot and asked many questions. The rest of the research team realized how valuable Rebecca was, and she started to get her own assignments. Bit by bit, she was assigned more work and, by the end of the summer, she became a full-fledged member of the team! The team was researching the behaviour of Central American mammals, particularly the relationship between predator and prey. Rebecca spent most of her time in the forest observing a family of sloths and trying to stay as quiet as possible. After a few days of this, she discovered that a naturalist's work is often very dirty and involves many long, hot hours where not much happens. It's easy to get very bored when you spend all day watching a sleeping animal. However, Rebecca took very detailed notes and did her best to impress the scientists. At the end of the summer, the entire team had magnificent things to say about Rebecca. They were so happy with her and her work that they asked her to return the following summer!
Walkman
英语的历史体现在孩子最先学会用来表示身份(I, me, you)、所属关系(mine, yours)、身体部位(eye, nose, mouth)、尺寸量度(tall, short),以及生活必需品(food, water) 的词汇当中。

English was first spoken by the Anglo-Saxons who invaded England in the fifth century. They passed onto us the basic vocabulary of English. In over fifteen centuries of its development, English has enriched itself by massive borrowing. As British immigrants landed in America and established the United States as an independent nation, a new variety was added to the English language: American English. Though some people worry that the language is running out of control, many native speakers of English take pride in the tolerance of their language.。

The third section, "Revisions", examines the artist's writing-over of previously existing works in his poems and drawings of the 1940s. The final section, "Illuminations", corresponds roughly to the years immediately after World War II until about 1950. During this period, Picasso took on a series of collaborations with writers and poets while also experimenting with many printed and applied media.A fully illustrated catalogue also accompanies the exhibition. The Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel St., is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (until 8 p.m. on Thursday), and Sunday, 1-6 p.m. It is closed Mondays and major holidays. Together they travelled around the world, adding only the finest art treasures to their collection. Priceless works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and many others adorned the walls of their family estate. The widowed elder man looked on with satisfaction as his only childbecame an experienced art collector. The son's trained eye and sharp business mind caused his father to beam with pride as they dealt with art collectors around the world.2 As winter approached, war engulfed the nation, and the young man left to serve his country. After only a few short weeks, his father received a telegram. His beloved son was missing in action. The art collector anxiously awaited more news, fearing he would never see his son again. Within days, his fears were confirmed; the young man had died while rushing a fellow soldier to a medic.3 Distraught and lonely, the old man faced the upcoming Christmas holidays with anguish and sadness. The joy of the season, that he and his son had so looked forward to, would visit his house no longer.4 On Christmas morning, a knock on the door awakened the depressed old man. As he walked to the door, the masterpieces of art on the walls only reminded him that his son was not coming home. As he opened the door, he was greeted by a soldier with a large package in his hands. He introduced himself to the old man by saying, "I was a friend of your son. I was the one he was rescuing when he died. May I come in for a few moments? I have something to show you."5 As the two began to talk, the soldier told of how the old man's son had told everyone of his, not to mention his father's, love of fine art. "I am an artist," said the soldier, "and I want to give you this."6 As the old man unwrapped the package, the paper gave way to reveal a portrait of his son. Though the world would never consider it the work of a genius, the painting featured the young man's face in striking detail.7 Overcome with emotion, the old man thanked the soldier, promising to hang the picture above the fireplace. A few hours later, after the soldier had departed, the old man set about his task. True to his word, the painting went above the fireplace, pushing aside thousands of dollars worth of art. His task completed, the old man sat in his chair and spent Christmas gazing at the gift he had been given.8 During the days and weeks that followed, the old man realized that even though his son was no longer with him, the boy's life would live on because of those he had touched. He would soon learn that his son had rescued dozens of wounded soldiers before a bullet stilled his caring heart.9 As the stories of his son's gallantry continued to reach him, fatherly pride and satisfaction began to ease his grief. The painting of his son soon became his most prized possession, far eclipsing any interest in the pieces for which museums around the world clamored. He told his neighbors it was the greatest gift he had ever received.10 The following spring, the old man became ill and passed away. The art world was in anticipation, that with the collector's passing, and his only son dead, those paintings would be sold at auction. According to the will of the old man, all of the art works would be auctioned on Christmas Day, the day he had received the greatest gift.11 The day soon arrived and art collectors from around the world gathered to bid on some of the world's most spectacular paintings. Dreams would be fulfilled this day; greatness would be achieved as many would hope to claim, "I have the greatest collection."12 The auction began with a painting that was not on any museum's list. It was the painting of the old man's son. The auctioneer asked for an opening bid, but the room was silent.13 "Who will open the bidding with $100?" he asked. Minutes passed, and no one spoke. From the back of the room came a voice, "Who cares about that painting? It's just a picture of his son." "Let's forget about it and move on to the good stuff," more voices echoed in agreement.14 "No, we have to sell this one first," replied the auctioneer. "Now, who will take the son?"15 Finally, a neighbor of the old man spoke. "Will you take ten dollars for the painting? That's allI have. I knew the boy, so I'd like to have it." "I have ten dollars. Will anyone go higher?" called the auctioneer. After more silence, the auctioneer said, "Going once, going twice, gone." The gavel fell.16 Cheers filled the room and someone exclaimed, "Now we can get on with it and we can bid on the real treasures!" The auctioneer looked at the audience and announced that the auction was over.17 Stunned disbelief quieted the room. Someone spoke up and asked, "What do you mean, it's over? We didn't come here for a picture of some old guy's son. What about all of these paintings? There are millions of dollars worth of art here! I demand that you explain what is going on!"18 The auctioneer replied, "It's very simple. According to the will of the father, whoever takes the son...gets it all."艺术品收藏家1 许多年前,有位富翁,他和爱子都非常热爱艺术品收藏。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.[题数:20;分数:40分;参考时间:40分0秒]Passage 1Design of all the new tools and implements is based on careful experiments with electronic instruments. First, a human "guinea pig" is tested using a regular tool. Measurements are taken of the amount of work done, and the buildup of heat in the body. Twisted joints and stretched muscles can not perform as well, it has been found, as joints and muscles in their normal positions. The same person is then tested again, using a tool designed according to the suggestions made by Dr. Tichauer. All these tests have shown the great improvement of the new designs over the old. One of the electronic instruments used by Dr. Tichauer, the myograph (肌动机器), makes visible through electrical signals the work done by human muscle. Another machine measures any dangerous features of tools, thus proving information upon which to base a new design. One conclusion of tests made with this machine is that a tripod stepladder is more stable and safer to use than one with four legs. This work has attracted the attention of efficiency experts and time-and-motion-study engineer, but its value goes far beyond that. Dr. Tichauer's first thought is for the health of the tool user. With the repeated use of the same tool 31. What areinvolvedin the design of a new tool according to the passage?____ [A] Electronic instruments and a regular tool. In time, such stress can cause a disabling disease. Furthermore, muscle fatigue is a serious safety hazard. Efficiency is the by-product of comfort, Dr. Tichauer believes, and his new designs for traditional tools have proved his point. 【参考答案】:D 【干扰项】:该题没有学生选择了错误答案! 32. Anyone clever enough to modify this information for his own purposes can reap big reward. Even worse, a number of people who have done this and been caught at it have managed to get away without punishment. It's easy for computer crimes to go undetected if 36. It can be concluded from the passage that ____. [A] it is still impossible to detect computer crimes today [B] people commit computer crimes at theno one checks up on what the computer is doing. But even if the crime is detected, the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but with a glowing recommendation from his former employers. Of course, we have no statistics on crimes that go undetected. But it's disturbing to note how many of the crimes we do know about were detected by accident, not by systematic inspections or other security procedures. The computer criminals who have been caught may have been the victims of uncommonly bad luck. Unlike other lawbreakers, who must leave the country, commit suicide, or go to jail, computer criminals sometimes escape punishment, demanding not only that they not be charged but that they be given good recommendations and perhaps other benefits. All too often, their demands have been met. Why? Because company executives are afraid of the bad publicity that would result if the public found out that their computer had been misused. They hesitate at the thought of a criminal boasting in open court of how he juggled (诈骗) the most confidential (保密) records right under the noses of the company's executives, accountants, and security staff. The pattern of sharing in tasks and indecision makes for equality and this in turn leads to 41. The ideal of equal rights and equalresponsibilities is ____. [A] fundamental to a soundfurther sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the "battle of the sexes". If the process goes too far and man's role is regarded as less important — and that has happened in some cases — we are as badly off as before, only in reverse. It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of "Momism" — but we don't want to exchange it for a "neo-Popism". What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit — nor the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman's place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyse man's placein the home and to insist that he does havea place in it. Nor is that place irrelevantto the healthy development of the child. But relying on educators to approach this task correctly can be a great mistake. Many schools continue to employ instructional methods that have been proven ineffective. The staying power of the "look-say" or "whole-word" method of teaching beginning reading is perhaps the most flagrant example of this failure to instruct effectively. The whole-word approach to reading stresses the meaning of words over the meaning of letters, thinking over decoding, developing a sight vocabulary of familiar words over developing the ability to unlock the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. It fits in with the self-directed, "learning how to learn" activities recommended by advocates (倡导者)of"open" classrooms and with the concept thatchildren have to be developmentally ready tobegin reading. Before 1963, no major publisherput out anything but these "Run-Spot-Run"readers. However, in 1955, Rudolf Flesch touchedoff what has been called "the great debate" inbeginning reading. In his best-seller Why JohnnyCan't Read, Flesch indicted(控诉)the nation's public schools for misadjusting students by using the look-say method. He said — and more scholarly studies by Jeane Chall and Rovert 46. The author feels that counting on educators to teach reading correctly is ____. The author indicts the look-sayDykstra later confirmed — that another approach to beginning reading, founded on phonics(语音学), is far superior. Systematic phonics first teachers children to associate letters and letter combinations with sounds; it then teaches them how to blend these sounds together to make words. Rather than building up a relatively limited vocabulary of memorized words, it imparts a code by which the pronunciations of the vast majority of the most common words in the English language can be learned. Phonics does not devalue the importance of thinking about the meaning of words and sentences; it simply recognizes that decoding is the logical and necessary first step. reading approach because ____. The (endangered species) includethe gorilla, the (orangutan) , the (7)giant tortoise, the trumpeter swan, (the whooping crane) , the big cats, and the whales. Since life began on this planet, countless creatures have come and gone - rendered extinct by natural changes. If extinction is part of the natural order, we can leave it as it is. Unfortunately, we cannot attribute the accelerating decline of our wild animals and plants to "natural" processes. Today's dangers to wildlife most often result from hunting, (habitat) degradation, environmental pollution, the introduction of (pesticides) , and expansion - all generally as a direct result of human activities. What man has done to the animals in the past hundred years will appall anyone who loves this world. The chimp had pressed the right buttons to dial preprogrammed numbers on a cell phone he'd swiped from a keeper. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that animals are smart. But do animals really think? And if so, are their thoughts similar to ours? Scientists have long tried to figure out the intricate workings of human intelligence, but the process of how a thought is chemically produced in the brain still remains a mystery. Researchers do know that humans rank high on the "smart meter" because of our abilities to use complex language and express abstract ideas. Now ethologists (animal behavior scientists) look for clear signs of intelligence in other animals, starting with three top categories:* emotions: Chimps react to dramatic TV scenes starring other chimps, which suggests they recognize and express emotions.* self-recognition: Bottlenose dolphins and chimpanzees recognize themselves in mirrors, which suggests they're aware of themselves as individuals. So far, only primates (humans and apes) and dolphins display this ability.* language: New research shows that prairie dogs use descriptive chirps to inform their colonies about predators and intruders--a human's size, for example, the colors he wears, how fast he's moving, even whether he's carrying a gun.Not long ago, many scientists ranked humans as the smartest animals and all other creatures inferior. Others relied on anthropomorphism, or testing animals purely by human attributes. Today's studies show that animals solve problems, make decisions, and show emotions--not unlike humans. "We share the planet with thinking animals," says Harvard ethologist Marc Hauser.。
