The oblivion of dreamI have been dreaming a lot in some certain period in my life. I remember when I started fastgrowing,I could always fly in the dreams at that time. The images in those dream are still vivid memory in my mind. What is more,I remember the "first"(first in my memory) dream which made me cry out,at the age of seven,in which my mom only bought snacks for my sister. There a lot of interesting dreams that I remember. But another frustrating experience about dream like all people have in their life is,sometimes we can only remember we had a wonderful dream last night, but have no idea of what is all about after wake up in the morning. Also, sometimes when we go to a new place and get a new feeling, suddenly we realize it has been experienced before, which might belongs to the dreams being forgotten by us.Why do people remember some dreams and forget the other? Is there any subconscious select in this process? In traditional Chinese beliefs, dreams can be a bridge between the departed and the living.(It can also be explained by the "wish- fulfillment"theory)And in some science fiction, dream can be a tool used by unknown creature from outer space to control our minds secretly, and they can eliminate some of memory about dream. Despite there are lots of supernatural hypothesis, neuropsychologists have come up with a lot of theory on these problem. If someones who believe the activation-synthesis theory of dreaming, which says dreams are nothing but just some image create by the random firing of neutron in the brain stem. There is customized explanation for them that suggests people memorize some dreams is because the they happened to occur at the time when some part of brain still active while people are dreaming. And it is When people are sound asleep, the part in the brain stem which will produce periodic signals has something to do with information input in the brain, thus the images of these dreams are written to memory. If when we wake up,we can recognize these images, and we can see that we had a dream. But this hypothesis is incomplete, because there are quite a lot of dreams that we can't remember even a image. But we can also learn something from this hypothesis. It said the memorization of dream is a reconstruction. And it exists various difficulties to reconstruct. Because sometimes dreams are too fanciful when compared to real life.It does have links sometimes, but the discrepancy can be extremely large. It is hard for people to find a corresponding element in the real life.In the famous book written by Freud"the interpretation of dream",he stated the reason whypeople forget their dreams.Firstly,it is the intensity of the stimulation. Just as in the life, only someof most impressive things have been remembered. The reason of the oblivion of dream is that thestimulation of these dreams are too slight to create a memory. In my case, all the dreams which stillexist in my memory are all have intense stimulation, the flying dreams which recurs for lots oftime, the unfair treatment dream that makes me cry out,or causing feeling like rage, fear and otherstrong emotion. But intensity of stimulation is not the only factor. Because just as mentionedabove, sometimes we only realize we had a wonderful dream instead of the content. Moreover, inthe most of times, dreams are only isolated experience, and this characteristic also contribute to theoblivion of dreams. In the study of the perception, things which are random and disordered are hardto remember, just as dreams does. We may all find that images occur in dream are illogical and indisorder, which may cause another difficulty. And the disorder would lead to a further problem, because people tend to understand things ina logical and organized way ,and have the tendency to add the lost links to these separated dreams to some degree. For me,I have a habit of analyzing my dream, every time I had a dream happen to be remembered, I will it down or draw some pictures on the paper. And I often find these incomplete images and words don't make sense, then when I try to interpret them, actually I create a story.Worse still, the more I have written down, the more I feel that it is not the same. What if it has a complete different version from the original dream? We will talk about it later.Another truth about memorization of dreams is that we can enhance the ability to remember them by training. Actually there are several ways we can do. First thing, as many people may have done including me is keeping track of your dreams. When you wake up after had a dream, try to record it in any form you like as soon as possible. Even it is separated and illogical,it doesn't matter. Because whatever how confused it seems, you will always get some ideas later on. Another method might be a little painful,to set several alarms which rings at every 90 minutes' cycle. No, I am just kidding. Because a good sleep is far more important that the joy of dream analyzing. A moderate way is drinking a bottle of water before go to bed, and it will probably make you wake up at least one time during the whole night.I have ever heard a saying goes that dreams are dramas created by memory debris. And I believeit will be so much fun if you can compile these pieces and let them make sense. Because dreams have the magic power to help us overcome some problems in the life. We can find out what makes us unhappy or unsatisfied through the so-called unconscious activity. Even in some scientific field, dream can help a lot. The most famous example might be the discovery of benzene' s structure. The German chemist kekule said that he discovered the ring shape of benzene molecule after having a reverie or day-dreaming of a snake seizing its own tail.(from wikipedia. benzene's structure) So one thing we can tell from these kinds of story is that dreams can be source of creatity and inspiration. That makes it even more important to remember dreams to get hints.。
