T; 3. F; 4. T; 5. FIII. 1. Refer to Paragraphs 1 and 2. She felt “first-gradish” on her arrival at the campus. The “first-gradish” feeling refers basically to naivety and anxiety, so she attempted to behave in a perfect way with the hope that no one would notice she was a freshman.2. Refer to Paragraph3. She chose to sit in the front row and to the side. This was becausethe freshman manual suggested sitting near the front to show that one is an intelligent and enthusiastic student, but as she was not confident enough to sit in the professor’s direct line of vision, she chose a side seat in the front row.3. Refer to Paragraph 6. She felt as if her life had punged into total failure and the doomof life had come.4. Refer to Paragraph 9. The football player got up, hands held high above his head in avictory clap, which is an expression of fun. She should not be afraid of making mistakes because it is only through trial and error that one can find his real self and finding is real self is the ultimate purpose of a college education. It was in this process that the author achieved significant insight into life and herself.Rhetorical features of the text“I knew everyone would stare. Forget it. I settled into my chair and tried to assume the scientific pose of a biology major, bending slightly forward, tensing my arms in preparation for furious note-taking, and cursing under my breath”(Paragraph 5). “Keeping myself upright and getting out of the mess was not going to be easy, and this flailing of my feet was doing no good. Just as I decided to try another maneuver, my food tray tipped and I lost my balance” (Paragraph 6). 全新版大学英语综合教程课文原文及翻译《全新版大学英语综合教程课文原文及翻译》Unit 1: The World of WorkPart 1: The Changing Nature of WorkThe world of work is constantly evolving, and it is important for individuals to adapt to these changes. In today's fast-paced society, the traditional notions of work are being challenged, and new opportunities are emerging. This unit explores the changing nature of work and its implications for individuals and society.1.1 The Traditional 9-to-5 JobTraditionally, work was often characterized by a 9-to-5 job in a fixed location. Employees would commute to an office or a factory, and their work would be structured around set hours. This model provided stability and a sense of routine for many individuals. However, with advancements in technology and globalization, this traditional model is no longer the only option.1.2 Flexible Work ArrangementsToday, flexible work arrangements are becoming more common. People have the opportunity to work remotely, choose their own hours, and even become self-employed. This flexibility allows individuals to better balance their work and personal lives. However, it also presents new challenges, such as the need for self-discipline and the blurring of boundaries between work and leisure.1.3 The Gig EconomyThe rise of the gig economy is another significant change in the world of work. In this model, individuals take on short-term or freelance jobs, often facilitated by online platforms. This provides them with more autonomy and the ability to pursue multiple income streams. However, it also means less job security and benefits compared to traditional employment.1.4 The Importance of Lifelong LearningWith the changing nature of work, the importance of lifelong learning cannot be overstated. Individuals need to continually update their skills and knowledge in order to remain competitive in the job market. This includes developing new technological competencies and adaptability to navigate future changes in the workplace.Part 2: The Impact of Work on Identity and Well-beingWork plays a significant role in shaping individual identity and overall well-being. How individuals perceive their work and the meaning they derive from it can greatly impact their satisfaction and happiness.2.1 Work as a Source of IdentityFor many people, work is not just a way to earn a living but also a source of identity and purpose. The type of work one engages in can be closely tied to personal values and ambitions. However, it is important to recognize that work should not be the sole determinant of a person's self-worth. Finding a balance between work and other aspects of life is crucial for overall well-being.2.2 Work-Life BalanceAchieving work-life balance is a constant challenge in today's connected world. The boundaries between work and personal life can easily blur, leading to increased stress and burnout. Employers and individuals need to actively promote strategies and policies that enable employees to have a healthy integration of work and personal life.2.3 The Pursuit of Meaningful WorkMany individuals strive to find work that is not only financially rewarding but also personally fulfilling. Meaningful work gives individuals a sense of purpose and satisfaction. This can be achieved by aligning personal values and passions with one's chosen career path.2.4 Work and Mental HealthThe relationship between work and mental health is complex. While work can provide a sense of structure and purpose, it can also contribute to stress and anxiety. Employers and society as a whole need to prioritize mental health support in the workplace and foster a culture that promotes work-life balance and overall well-being.ConclusionThe world of work is undergoing significant changes, requiring individuals to adapt and embrace new opportunities. The impact of work on identity and well-being cannot be underestimated. It is crucial for individuals, employers, and society to work together to create a more balanced and fulfilling work environment. By recognizing the evolving nature of work andaddressing its challenges, we can create a future where individuals find meaning and satisfaction in their careers.。

no, i don’t think roommates are usually friends. living in the same room doesn’t necessarily mean that friendships will develop. although roommates are usually friendly to each other, not all of them are friends because friendliness is not always an indication of friendship. it’s true with classmates. only when people have similar interests and a common outlook on life will they become friends or close friends. ? i think more often than not roommates will become friends. obviously, roommates spend much time together and therefore will learn a lot about each other. when people get to know each other, friendship often develops. many people could have become friends if they had met and got together often or long enough. sharing rooms paves the way to friendship. we often hear older people say they were roommates or classmates and therefore good friends. it doesn’t mean roommates will surely become friends. they’re more likely to become friends.4 it made me feel so goodstep twosample? as a newcomer in this university, the first letter i’ve received here is from my best friend, dong ming. dong ming and i were classmates in high school and we spent a lot of time together, studying, talking and playing around. i can safely say that not a single day was spent without our being together during our senior high school years. but now we’re studying at two different universities far apart from each other.his letter makes me feel as if we were together again, talking. and what’s important is not the letter itself but what he said in the letter.dear dong hao,i felt sad when we left each other last friday and yet a little happy about all the new things and the excitement ahead of us in our new co llege life. it’s what we want and need.best wishes, dong ming? sometimes i feel good about myself when i’ve been able to contribute a little bit to my relationships with others. i remember what i did for xiao li, my next door neighbor and good friend. last summer xiao li got seriously ill and was in the hospital for five weeks.at the beginning i didn’t know what i could do for him. i went to mom for advice.mom thought about it for a while and said, “well, the only thing i can tell you is to be available when he needs you—not when you want to be available.” i took mom’s advice seriously. i called him on the phone now and then to check if he needed any help and i went to see him every day after school and did what i could for him. so when xiao li recovered and left the hospital i felt so happy.5 when your neighbor is in need of helpstep onesamplea young woman was walking along the streets one night when she was attacked. she screamed for help and managed to escape. a few minutes later her attacker caught her again and she continued screaming for help while the neighbors watched terrified from their windows and did nothing. they didn’t even call the police. the woman died of multiple stab wounds (多处刺伤).step twosample1 i think there are several reasons for that. first, people were rather cowardly and selfish. when they heard someone screaming late at night, they thought that might be dangerous so they just stood back and watched the woman get killed in front of them. they preferred to protect themselves rather than get involved to risk being injured or even killed. second, they felt that there are already institutions in cities to deal with this kind of problem. they didn’t think they needed to intervene because the police would do something for them. finally, it is possible that these people were so terrified that they could not think clearly or take action to protect the woman.2 i don’t know. maybe i would go to the street and try to protect the woman. i think more people would come to help if they realized what was really happening. maybe i would call the police. but i’m afraid that when the police arrived, she might already have been killed. or maybe i would be too scared to give any help. i might simply close the window and put my ear plugs in. these are the different things i might do on such an occasion, but i believe it’s most likely that i would call the police.。
