wordUnit8 Protecting the Environment 课堂练习Radio said yesterday that a very serious sand-dust storm, maybe the most serious one this year, attacked the whole North China. All the planes in and out stopped flying and all freeways were closed. It was said to grow from the central deserts of Mongolia for lack of rain in this area for almost ten months.News from the People’s Daily:Owing to people’s activities in the earth, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atomosphere is increasing and this leads to so-called greenhouse effect, that is,the temperature of the air is rising. Some icebergs in Antarctic and in the Arctic Ocean are melting and collapsing. An unexpected snow fell in Europe this August, and this has never happened before at this time of year. And worse still, the hole of Ozonophere over Antarctic is being larger day by day. From the above we can see that protecting the environment is not only a must for our life, but also a life and death problem for our existence. Please think of the following two questions:1.Is pollution serious in China judging from the surroundings in your munity?2.Some people are making an urgent appeal “serving our earth〞.Why?Unit8 Protecting the Environment 合作与讨论The population is increasing very fast, especially in developing countries and this calls for development of industry and agriculture. With the development more and more pollution is produced. What’s more, for lack of environmental awareness, people throw rubbish casually, and for lack of money, the rubbish can’t be delt with, lying everywhere and causing damage to our surroundings day and night. Now discuss in groups the following questions about pollution.1.How many kinds of pollution are there in the world?2.How serious is pollution in your munity?3.What’s like people’s awareness of pollution around you?4.What measures have been taken to stop pollution in your munity or city?1 / 1。

Write the word Environment as the theme. Ask the class what the 3 main things that they can do to help save the enviroment. Discuss with the class and make an educated guess. Go one step further and predict the sub—parts of each ponent.Reading the text.Divide the class into groups .each group reads the text and using the same outline, fins the information and writes in the ponents .<recycle ,reduce and reuse are the three main ponents>Now read the text together as a class. If possible put the text on a transparency and use an overhead projector. Begin by reviewing some of the thinking strategies readers use: questioning ,connecting with the ideas, and information and discuss examples used in previous lessons.Have the Ss divide a page in two columns.with the first headed CONTENTS <facts> and the second column headed WHAT I WONDER<thinking>. This form is to help the students keep track of their evolving thinking as they rered the text. After reading each paral give the students a few minutes to write a “thinking question〞. Classmembers and the teacher work together to answer the “thinking questions〞CONTENT<FACTS> WHAT I WONDER <THINKING>1.Recycle things instead of throwing them 1.What things can I recycle? How can I recycle?in the garbage 2. I wonder what we could do with these gadgets.2.Throwing away electronic gadgets is3. how e---?harmful to the enviroment. 4 .i am confused about---5 what does ---mean?Teaching tipIf students can ask questions and related the text to their own lives, they are more likely to be able to understand the meaning of the para. Rather than having to memorize it .A possible follow—up activity or opening for the next lesson is to reenact the story. Divide the class into pairs to be the characters in the text: dirk and jenny.Choose one pair of students to model the reenactment.Walk the students through the story asking promotes: what did she say to him?whathappened after that? Have the two students act out the story beginning with Dirk’s chanting e the dialogue directly from the story as the script .Once the activity has been modeled ,get all of the pairs doing the same so that everyday gets a chance to reenact the story.。
