2022-2023The common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is probably why there are more myths about it than any of the other illn esses. The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one.If cold causes colds,it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not.And in distant and isolated Arctic regions explorers have reposed being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected(感染的)people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from air planes. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the disc omforts of being cold and wet for long periods of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be doused(浸入)with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty(通风的)room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until clo se to complete tiredness. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold u nless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose. If,then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter?Despite the most pains--taking research,no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people are more likely to stay together indoors in cold weather than at other t imes, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppresso rs(止痛片) such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms.29.The fact that the Eskimos don't suffer colds shows thatD.A.colds are really full of myths.B.viruses are the factors causing colds.C.colds are more serious than other illnesses.D.the idea that cold leads to colds doesn't stand up.30.The experiments mentioned in Paragraph 3made it clear thatA.A.it was viruses not wet and cold that made people have colds.B.taking hot baths made the volunteers easy to be tired.C.being doused with cold water did harm to one's body.D.people who would like to exercise in the rain got colds more easily.31.According to the passage, colds are commonly seen in winter becauseA.A.staying together indoors makes it easier for viruses to pass on.B.viruses can go into people's warm bodies more easily in winter.C.there is great difference between indoor and outdoor temperature.D.People are usually weak because of the extreme cold in winter32.The passage mainly discussesC.A.the experiments on colds.B.the myths about colds.C.the reason and the way people catch colds.D.the continued spread of common colds. If cold causes colds,it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actua lly dropped in his nose. One explanation offered by scientists is that people are more likely to stay together indoors in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

Sea stars can grow new arms. Crayfish can grow new claws. There are interesting creatures that can grow back body parts if accidents happen. However, that is child’s play after what researchers saw a sea slug do.According to a new discovery by Sayaka Mit oh and her colleagues of Nara Women’s University in Japan, two species of sea slugs managed to lose their heads and then began crawling around. Eventually, they grew an entirely new body. “We were surprised to see the head moving just after it was removed,” said Sayaka Mitoh. “We thought that it would die soon without a heart and other important organs, but we were surprised again to find that it regenerated the whole body.”After the initial discovery, the researchers found that for younger slugs, the detached heads began eating algae within hours. The wound typically closed at the back of the head within days. They started regrowing a heart within a week and the regeneration of the entire body was finished after around three weeks. Older slugs weren’t as fortunate. Often the heads didn’t feed, so they died in about 10 days. Young or old, the headless bodies never generated a new head. But they did move around and respond to being touched for several days and sometimes months after losing their heads. The researchers aren’t sure why the sea slugs dropped their heads or how they’re able to grow new bodies. They may have parasites(寄生虫)that can hurt reproduction so they are removing their heads in order to also remove the parasites. But the researchers are n’t sure what prompts them to know when to cast off the body when they do it. Sayaka Mitoh says they believe there must be cells located in the neck that are similar to stem cells. These are able to regenerate a new body. How the heads can survive without a heart and other vital organs is another puzzle. The researchers say these sea slugs fuel their bodies by photosynthesis(光合作用). They rely on chloroplasts from algae in their own bodies when other food isn’t available, a process known as kleptoplasty(盗食质体). They think this might help them survive long enough to regenerate a body.“As the separated body is often active for months, we may be able to study the mechanism and functions of kleptoplasty using living organs, tissues, or even cells,” Sayaka Mitoh s aid. “Such studies are almost completely lacking, as most studies on kleptoplasty in the se animals are done either at the genetic or individual levels.”1. What surprised Sayaka Mitoh and her colleagues?A. The sea slug could regrow a new body.B. The sea slug could survive without organs.C. The sea slug could remove its own head.D. The headless sea slug could grow a new head.2. What happened to older sea slugs after they lost their heads?A. Their heads survived by eating algae.B. They healed the wound within ten days.C. They lost their sense of touch and died soon.D. Their bodies kept moving around for some time.3. What may make sea slugs drop their heads according to researchers?A. To get rid of parasites.B. To end their reproductive cycle.C. To generate new stem cells.D. To get away from predators.4. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?A. The process of sea slugs hunting for food.B. The importance of studying functions of kleptoplasty.C. The condition for sea slugs to perform photosynthesis.D. The reason for sea slugs to survive the loss of their bodies.【参考答案】1-4 ADAD生词1. crayfish n. The thought of her daughter’s wedding day prompted her to lose some weight. She felt nervous, increasingly lacking in confidence about herself.

My Ideal WeekendAs a student in Grade 8, I look forward to my weekends with great anticipation. Unlike the hectic weekdays filled with schoolwork and exams, weekends offer me a chance to unwind, recharge, and pursue my passions. On Saturday mornings, I love waking up to the sunshine and the sound of birds chirping. I start my day with a healthy breakfast of fruits and whole grains, which sets me up for the activities ahead. Then, I head to the local library, where I can lose myself in a good book. Whether it's a thriller, a mystery, or a biography, reading allows me to escape into another world and broaden my horizons. In the afternoons, I enjoy spending time outdoors. I might go for a hike in the nearby park, explore nature, and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The fresh air and exercise do wonders for my physical and mental health. On Sundays, I focus on self-improvement. I might take an online course or work on a personal project that I'm passionate about. These activities help me develop new skills and pursue my interests outside of school. In the evenings, I relax by watching a movie or listening to music with my family. We also spend time discussing current events or sharing stories from our daily lives. These conversations not only strengthen our bond but also help me develop a better understanding of the world.Overall, my ideal weekend is a balance of relaxation, learning, and spending quality time with loved ones. Fair argues that by shifting(转移)animal habitats, climate change will also make theopportunities for disease spillover more frequent. “Everything is sort of shifting and will shift into thefuture as the environment changes through climate chang e,” Fa ir said.Scientists, including climatologists and epidemiologists on Fair’s team at Los Alamos, are beginning to model how changes to the climate will impact the spread of infectious diseases. It’s early days for thiskind of research, but previous studies suggest that extreme weather has already played a role in at least oneoutbreak. Scientists say drought and deforestation have combined to force bats out of rainforests and intoorchards(果园)in Malaysia to find food. Those bats, a common disease reservoir, then passed the Nipahvirus through pigs to humans for the first time in the late 1990s.“We’r e going by the past data to really predict what’s going to happen in the futur e,” Fair said, “And so, anytime you increase that wildlife-human interface(界面), that’s sort of an emerging disease hot spot. And so, that’s just increasing as we go forwar d.”Jeffrey Shaman, head of the climate and health program at Columbia University’s public health school, argues we don’t yet know whether climate change will cause a net increase in infectious diseaserates globally. For example, mosquitoes carry disease that affects millions of people across the world everyyear. As their habitats expand in some parts of the world, they might contract diseases elsewhere. Shamansays what we know for certain about climate change is that it will make it harder to predict where diseaseoutbreaks will pop up.1.
