According to a team of researchers, an animal’s ability to perceive(感知) time is linked to their pace of life.“Our results lend support to the importance of time perception in animals where the ability to perceive time in a very short time may be the difference between life and death for fast moving creatures,” commented the lead author Kevin Healy from Trinity College Dublin. The study was done with a variety of animals using a phenomenon based on the maximum speed of flashes of light an individual can see before the light source is seen as constant. Dogs, for example, have eyes with a refresh rate higher than humans. One example of this phenomenon at work, the authors say, is the housefly and its ability to avoid being hit. The research shows flies observe motion in a shorter time than our own eyes can achieve, which allows them to avoid being hit.Professor Graeme Ruxton of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, who worked jointly on the research project, said in a statement, “Having eyes that send updates to the brain at much higher frequencies than our eyes do is of no value if the brain cannot process that information equally quickly. Thus, this work highlights the impressive abilities of even the smallest animal brains. Flies might not be deep thinkers, but they can make good decisions very quickly.”In comparison, the tiger beetle(虎甲虫) runs faster than its eyes can keep up, basically becoming blind, which requires it to stop period ically to reevaluate its prey’s(猎物) position. Our results suggest that time perception offers an as yet unstudied dimension in which animals can specialize and there is a considerable range to study this system in more detail.【解题导语】本文是一篇科普说明文。

The United Kingdom李仕才一、阅读理解。
Persuasion is to convince someone to agree with you, just like art which also calls for special techniques to accomplish. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos.Et hos is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience that he is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education he has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman.Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience's emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them want to vote for him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats to make the viewers feel pity, so they will be more likely to donate money.Logos is the use of facts, statistics or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.Although ethos, pathos and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. So, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.1.What is the purpose of persuasion?A. To advise somebody to support you.B. To help someone have special skillC. To convince somebody to realize his aim.D. To talk someone into being honest.2.What is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience to trust him?A. Pathos.B. Ethos.C. Logos.D. Education.3.What do a politician and an animal charity have in common?A. Both prevent themselves from being hurt.B. Both save people from terrible wars.C. Both make the audience support them.D. Both persuade people to donate money.4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Convince the AudienceB. Three Basic Tools of PersuasionC. Believe MeD. Strength of Persuasion【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了源自于古希腊且一直沿用至今的说服他人的艺术,其中包括ethos、pathos、logos三种方式以及用这三种方式说服他人在各个领域应用的可能性。
Unit 2 The United KingdomⅠ.阅读理解ABring any group of business owners or managers together, ask them the best way to promote their organizations, and you'll get different answers. That comes as no surprise. When it comes to promoting a business, trying to find the single choice is rarely wise. You'll see business owners and managers try radio advertising. When that doesn't produce the results they want, they'll change to sending direct mail. When that doesn't create a jump in sales, they'll buy TV commercials. When that falls short of their expectations, they'll try a new online strategy...and it goes on and on.For most companies, the best approach is a mix of different channels, organized in ways that allow each to build upon the others. The channel that will work best in a given situation depends on a lot of factors, including the company itself, its audience, the message being conveyed, the environment, and many more.Just that radio worked well for a company's last effort doesn't mean that TV advertising wouldn't be a better choice this time.Or maybe the right channel is direct mail. There's no simple answer, because there are so many variables. If your audience is broad, then maybe radio or newspaper advertising is the right choice. If you're targeting a carefully defined group, such as former customers, direct mail or email will probably perform better. There are two important lessons here. The first is not to concentrate on trying to find a single channel that will s erve all of the company's needs, because it just does n't exist. The second lesson is that before you spend the first dollar to promote your business, you need to do more than a little learning. You'll really need to understand your customers, your marketplace, your competitors, and the environments in which you do business. And you need a good understanding of what makes one marketing channel right for one situation, but not another.[语篇解读] 本文为一篇说明文。

The Scottish composer Evelyn Glennie lost nearly all her hearing as a young girl, yet went on to a very successful career in music including winning Grammy awards. When somebody asks her,“How do you hear?” She responds,“Ho w do you hear?Is it only with your ears?” For Glennie, and for us too, listening is not only hearing, but is understanding. We need to listen to what is said and unsaid, and also how it is said. It's important to hear what people say accurately. As Mark Twain said,“The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug(萤火虫).”If you miss something or you're not sure you've heard accurately, ask the speakers. At this point you're not evaluating what they say,but just looking for accuracy and understanding. Here are some ways to get clear about what they say and don't say.Why are they saying this now, instead of sooner or later? Why are they emphasizing these points, instead of something else?Listen to how it is said.People send signals about what they mean with their voices and body language that sometimes differ from the words they say. While going through the next points, think about someone whose real meaning you might sometimes miss.and see if any of these signals might come up.First,voices.When others speak, notice changes in their volume, pace, and tone.Second, body language.Notice gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions.Do these sync what they are saying,or do they tell a different story?Third, emotions. What is the person true feeling? Now you might not know for sure, but be considerate, open to understanding, and ask thoughtful questions.1.What's the writer's purpose of mentioning Evelyn Glennie?A.To give an example of wise words.B.To introduce a worldfamous musician.C.To help explain the meaning of listening.D.To encourage us to fight against disability.2.What can we learn from what Mark Twain said?A.It is important to have a good knowledge of English words.B.People should know words can be used in many different ways.C.English is a very complicated language with a large vocabulary.D.The slight difference between words may result in misunderstanding.3.What does the underlined word “sync” probably mean?A.Match. Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go —to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.1. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?A. Its business culture.B. Its small population.C. Its geographical position.D. Its favourable climate.2. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.B. One out of five people got rich.C. Almost everyone gave up.D. Half of them died.3. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?A. They found the city too crowded.B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.C. They were unable to stand the winter.D. They were short of food.4. What is the text mainly about?A. The rise and fall of a city.B. The gold rush in Canada.C. Journeys into the wilderness.D. Tourism in Dawson.【话题解读】这是一篇说明文。

Unit 2 The United Kingdom李仕才一、阅读理解ASeveral companies in Europe, the US and Asia have decided to change one of the processes of making chocolate and no longer roast the cacao beans. They insist that growers in Africa and South America leave them outdoors to dry naturally instead. The resulti ng product is called “raw” chocolate.Producers claim that avoiding exposure to oven temperatures allows the preservation of nutrients such as iron, zinc, copper and vitamin C.It's also claimed that uncooked cacao contains higher levels of antioxidants(抗氧化物) than roasted cacao used in most chocolate.“Over the last 10 years, consumers have become more involved in their food and drink,” says Kris McGowan, who runs the Raw Chocolate Company. “They care a lot more about its healthy qualities and c hocolate is no exception.”But Martin Schweizer, professor of biochemistry at HeriotWatt University, urges caution on describing raw chocolate as a super food until more research is carried out. “We have to look at this in more depth. The research is a t a fairly early stage.”There are concerns that not heating them to about 150 ℃ could mean an increase in bacteria. However, producers insist that, as no animal products are involved, there is no greater risk than when dealing with vegetables such as carrots or lettuces.Jennifer Earle, a writer on chocolate, is unconvinced by it on taste grounds. “It's the quality of the cacao that makes a difference, not whether the chocolate is ‘raw’ or not,” she says. “And if you're talking about health, I'd rat her eat some topquality ordinary chocolate and have a plate of vegetables afterwards.”【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。

Unit 2 The United KingdomⅠ阅读理解(2018·河北石家庄高中毕业班一模)Few people are aware that Waterloo Bridge, crossed by thousands of daily muters(通勤者) and celebrated as a London landmark, was mainly built by a female workforce. There are no written or photographic records of the women who built the bridge since the construction pany that built it closed in the 1980s and with it went all the records. What’s left is anecdotal evidence, kept alive by the tourist boat captains who have called it the Lad ies’ Bridge.During the Second World War, with the majority of the active male labor force away at the front, women increasingly took on traditionally male roles. By 1944, 25,000 women were working in the construction industry, carrying out backbreaking tasks. These women were permitted to carry out this exhausting and dangerous work on the basis that it would only be temporary and that their pay would be lower than that of men. So the trend in women working in construction and engineering did not continue after the war.September sees a series of events celebrating the unknown work of the large female workforce. Musician Claudia Molitor has created a 45minute musical entitled “the Singing Bridge”, which runs at Somerset House from 9 to 25 September. In late September, the “Light up the Ladies’ Bridge” event sees the National Theatre’s fly tower lit up by large scale photographic projections(投影) of female construction workers working in construction during World War Ⅱ.Let’s all celebrate the women who have helped to build the cities in which we live.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Unit 2 The United KingdomⅠ.阅读理解A(2021·江西九江二模)As I began my junior year of college, I began to think of plans after graduation. I knew that I wanted to work in the field of my major, public relations. But I also knew that it was difficult to find a position considering my inexperience. That was when I decided to pursue an internship (实习工作).So I chose to talk to my advisor first. He had worked in the field of public relations for many years before he became a professor and therefore had numerous contacts and associates in the field. After talking to him about a few of the positions, I decided to pursue the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund because of my interest in the arts and the passion I would feel working for a nonprofit organization.I sent out a cover letter and a resume and was hired on the spot in the interview.I soon began my position. After class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I would drive to work and apply all the skills I was learning in the classroom. I was amazed at the amount of practical knowledge in class that was directly applicable to my internship position. It became a very useful and beneficial experience. Not only was I working for arts organizations and seeing my name printed on documents I had created, but also gaining confidence in my skills and myself. As the semester came to a close,I finished my work with the Fine Arts Fund. Although I didn't take away any money for the internship,I gained many different kinds of experience and the knowledge that I was capable of accomplishing professional tasks. And that kind of confidence was invaluable to me as I sat down to interview for my next internship.【文章大意】作者上大三时就开场考虑自己未来,考虑到实习经历在就业中重要性,作者在导师建议下找到了个实习岗位,尽管没有挣到钱,但是所积累经历让作者感觉到很值得。
必修5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom李仕才一、阅读理解AWhenever the word “hero” comes to me, I immediately think of three Hs: honorable, hardworking, and happy. When I think more about this word, I picture someone who has accomplished good things for people and tries to do the right thing. Hattie Elizabeth Alexander is one person whom I find to be very heroic.Hattie was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 5,1901. During her time at college she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Bacteriology and Physiology. These were just the first steps toward what she was finally going to be remembered for. After college Hattie attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and received her medical degree. After her education, she pursued her career, and after much time and hard work, she drastically reduced the number of infants (幼儿) dying from meningitis (脑膜炎). Hattie was very dedicated to her work and helped at as many locations as she could. Spending substantial (大量的) time in the laboratory, Hattie successfully developed a cure against the disease, which decreased the death rate to 20 percent. At the same time, she was also a teacher working with Columbia University. She was a caring lady interested in other people's lives. When she was teaching at Columbia University, other members would talk to her about students that were failing their classes, and somehow Hattie could always find convincing reasons as to why they should not be driven away. Later, Hattie became an instructor in Pediatrics at New York City's Babies Hospital. After many honors, she became the first woman president of the American Pediatric Society in 1965. This was her last major achievement, for soon after, Hattie died of cancer on June 24, 1968.Hattie is my hero because her positive attitude and strength helped her accomplish great things for others. She gave them her strength by developing medicines against diseases, which, by doing so, made them stronger. This is what makes Hattie Elizabeth Alexander my hero.【文章大意】本文介绍了作者心目中的英雄——哈蒂·伊丽莎白·亚历山大为社会作出的贡献。

学习资料专题Unit 2 The United KingdomⅠ阅读理解AIn our everyday lives we meet situations in which we take many things for granted. We only treasure things when they are gone. This is a sad truth of human nature. One day, I found myself as a witness to a similar situation. One evening, I left work and boarded the train. After entering, I noticed something unusual. The center of the car had a few empty seats while both ends were crowded with people standing. I didn’t pay much attention and sat down on one of the empty seats. I sensed a funny smell. It wasn’t long before I noticed a homeless person sleeping on three seats in front of me. He was bleeding from his nose. Why wasn’t anyone helping him?His clothes were torn and he was giving off a strange smell. Along with the smell, his eyes were dull, watery, and red. Occasionally he scratched himself and people looked at him as if he had committed a crime. As the train stopped at stations and more people came in they covered their noses and faced away from him. All the seats around him were empty.Suddenly, he began to swear at the people around him. A plainclothes police officer who looked like a construction worker took out his certificate and showed it to the homeless man. The officer, not wanting to touch the homeless man, told him his rights and directed him to exit the train. As the officer walked the man out of the train, the homeless man turned around and said “MY HOME!” and started crying.A man doesn’t value things until they are gone. If he didn’t have a home, at least he had freedom. Now he has neither. No one wants to help someone who won’t help himself.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

occurred to me to go any other way.Driving in Britain is such a dull experience these days. There are far too many cars on the road, nearly double what there were when I first came here, and in those days people didn’t actually drive their cars. They just parked them in the driveway and cleaned them once every week,or so.About twice a year they w ould “get the car out” for a pleasant drive to visit relatives or take a trip. Now everyone drives everywhere for everything, which I don’t understand because there isn’t a single feature of driving in Britain that has even the tiniest measure of enjoyment in it.Just consider the average multi-storey(多层的) car park. You drive around for ages, and eventually find a space that is exactly two inches wider than the average car. Then, because you are parked next to a pillar(柱子),you have to climbover the seats and end up squeezing out of the passenger door,in the process transferring all the dirt from the side of your car to the back of your smart new jacket. Then you go hunting for some distant pay-and-display machine, which doesn’t give change. And that’s just one tiny part of the driving experience. There are all the other annoyances of motoring, like traffic lights on busy roundabouts(环状交叉路) that never let you advance more than 20 feet at a time, and motorway service areas where food is much more expensive.Motorized vehicles are ugly and dirty. They occupy every pavement, turn ancient market squares into disorderly and untidy groups of metal, and cause petrol stations and other discouraging places to appear in great numbers. They are horrible and awful and I wanted nothing to do with them on this trip.1.Why did the author decide to travel by public transport?A.Because he didn’t have a car.B.Because he hated driving in Britain.C.Because he wasn’t familiar with roads in Britain.D.Because he was inspired by how people used to travel.2.What did the author mainly complain about in Paragraph 2?A.The inconvenience of parking cars.B.The unreasonable parking fees.C.The uncleanness of car parks.D.The improper use of cars.3.How is the last paragraph developed?A.By providing examples.B.By making comparisons.C.By following the order of time.D.By following the order of space.4.What would the author probably talk about in the paragraph that follows?A.The terrible places caused by vehicles.B.The bother caused by driving cars.C.His travels by public transport.D.His past driving experience.BSummerCampsMake your summer magical with a one-of-a-kind summer camp experience!Half-day,week-long camps are held from 9 using only your smart phone. Or scanning a QR code (二维码) to buy goods from a newspaper ad.By making use of these new technologies, China mobile shopping is a bit ahead of the United States. China is still the world's largest smart phone market, even though growth is slow. It accounts for about 30 percent of the global smart phone market, and Chinese smart phone users are expected to jump from 526.8 million to 640 million in 2018, according to eMarketer. And its shoppers are using their instruments to rush to purchase a wide range of goods and services.Nearly half of all China's e-commerce sales, totaling $505.7 billion, are made with mobile devices, versus roughly one-quarter in the US, according to eMarketer. By 2019, China's mobile sales will account for 71 percent of those sales.“We don't see mobile buying staying unchangeable for the next five years,” said Monica Pearl, eMarketer's director of forecasting. “It'll increase becauseconsumer behavior has changed.” Featurerich(功能多样的), cheap smart phones are also helping fuel the boom, she added.“China is, after all, a mobile first market,” explains Brian Buchwald, CEO of consumer intelligence firm Bomoda. So it has been able to go beyond other markets, which mainly used PCs for purchases.Meanwhile, the Chinese government has allowed a free-flowing retail and payments marketplace. “There are no restraints(约束),” said Michael Zakkour, vice president of China / Asia Pacific practice at Tompkins International. And that's good news for WeChat, a messaging app that's only five years old and is offered by the Internet giant Tencent. The app now has 650 million users. And a good mass of them are using the app for mobile shopping. The result is that WeChat payments, along with Alibaba's Alipay, lead the market. Because retailers can easily set up shops inside WeChat, users can plan family vacations, order a taxi or even buy clothes without going anywhere else.China is up to three years ahead of the US in mobile shopping, said Buchwald. “And it's moving faster than any other area of the economy. It's the future.”1.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A.China has more goods than the United States.B.America's new technologies are as good as China.C.China's smart phone market is larger than that of the United States.D.American smart phone users will be ahead of Chinese in 2018.2.According to Monica Pearl, why is mobile shopping increasing in China?A.Chinese are fond of using these new technologies.B.Nearly half of all China's ecommerce sales are made with mobile devices.C.Smart phones are cheaper than any other country in the world.D.The behavior of customers has changed.3.Which best describes the Buchwald's attitude toward Chinese mobile shopping?A.Doubtful.B.Optimistic.C.Cautious.D.Worried.参考答案: 1.C; 2.D; 3.B解析: 1.[细节题。
