一、外位语结构的概念
汉语主题有一种特殊形式，即外位语（extra-position）。
汉语的外位语，比较常见，又称作外位成分、复指成分。
他是汉语句子中的一种特殊成分。
外位语是针对本位语而言的。
把句中的某一成分抽到句子前头，而在其原来的位置上用另一个词代替，这个抽到句子前头的成分就是外位语，而放在其原来位置上的代替词就是本位语。
使用外位语的目的是突出某一事物或某一概念，以引起别人的注意，或为了简化复杂的长句，使之结构严谨，关系清楚。
例如：
1. 听力、阅读、语音、口语、笔语、翻译等等，样样都要好。
2. 实现四个现代化，这是我们今后相当长时间的中心工作。
3. 我家乡的人们样样东西都有了--食物，衣服和住房。
4. 商品这东西，千百万人天天看它，用它，但是熟视无睹。
在以上例子中，划横线的部分是外位语，加粗黑体字是本位语。
二、外位语结构的特征
外位语结构不与其他成分发生组织上的关系，即使把他们移走，句子照样成立，但意义又是句子所必需的，通常用逗号或有时用破折号与句子中的其它部分隔开。
英语中也有类似汉语外位语结构的表达方法，如jane austen， she was a novelist.这里jane austen 也是外位语结构。
不过，汉语中外位语的使用远比在英语中普遍。
汉语外位语结构英译时，可套用英语的外位语结构。
但是应当注意，外位语结构的处理方法是多种多样的，究竟选择何种方法，要视外位语结构本身的繁简程度和上下文而定。
三、外位语结构的几种翻译方法
1. 对应法：按照原文的语序翻译。
example 1国家的统一，人民的团结，国内各民族的团结，这是我们事业必定要胜利的基本保证。
（《毛泽东选集》五卷，363页）the unification of our country， the unity of our people and the unity of our various nationalities-these are the basic guarantees for the sure triumph of our cause.
example 2我又遇到了琳达，她身体结实，也许能活上100岁。
again， i came across linda-tough， and will likely touch a hundred
2. 拆句法：为了使句子简练，避免长句给读者造成理解上的负担，就把原来的一句话译成英语的两句话。
example 1 遇事想争个第一，而且能争到第一。
这就不简单。
he not only wants to excel-he does excel. that’s not easy. example 2 人有七种才能使冰川时期的人类战胜了严酷环境中的种种艰难困苦，它们是直立行走，双腿，双臂，双手，视力，大脑和语言能力。
the people of the ice age had seven gifts that helped overcome many perils of their difficult world. they were
upright posture， two legs， arms， hands， vision， human brain and the power of speech.
3.还原法：将句中的外位语结构改变成句中的一个成分。
example 1百花齐放，百家争鸣，这是促进艺术发展和科学进步的方针。
the policy for promoting progress in the arts and sciences is letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of
thought contend.
example 2 他们必须懂得，消灭阶级，消灭国家权力，消灭党，全人类都要走这条路的，问题只是时间和条件。

they must understand that the road to the abolition of classes， to the abolition of state power and to the abolition of parties is the road all mankind must take； it is only a question of time and conditions.
example 3 你不想做那工作，这是很明显的。
it is clear that you did not want to do that job.
4.倒置法：即将由原文句中的主语指代的外位语改变成表语，同时将原文的表语改变成主语。
example 1 实现四个现代化，这是我们今后相当长时间的中心工作。
