When Christopher Columbus landed on the then unnamed Costa Rica in 1502, he saw many Indians wearing gold earrings. So he thought the land must be rich in gold. He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish.Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出口) to other countries like America and West Germany. Bananas are the country’s second most important export.Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors.Education is very important to the Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Boys and girls go to separate (单独的) schools. Classes begin in March and end in November. The other three months of the year are harvest time and the children have to help their parents to pick coffee beans.1. Costa RicaC. some products from Costa RicaD. the education of Costa RicaChristian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate —refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.6. The underlined word “cure” in Paragragh 1 probably means ______.A. a medical treatmentB. a kind of vitaminC. a kind of germD. a kind of ric7. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily. Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!11. The writer of this passage must be ______.A. an AmericanB. a ChineseC. a professorD. a student12. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.13. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.A. warmly welcomed at the airportB. offered a ride to his homeC. treated hospitably at his homeD. treated to dinner in a restaurant14. The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______.A. strict with timeB. serious with timeC. careful with timeD. willing to spend time15. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.A. Friendships between ChineseB. Friendships between AmericansC. Americans’ hospitalityD. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendshipsThe other day I heard a few local musicians talking:“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.Attitu des are important. Whether they’ positive or negative, they’ rubbing off on you. If you’ around re re re people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者), chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.16. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words. However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them. And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two g eese — so one moose, two meese? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? 英文阅读理解Passage 1There are stories about two U.S . presidents,Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK.We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting. The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact,he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson,he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said.If he approved of a paper.he would writ e“all correct”on it.The problem was that he didn’t know how to spell. So what he really wrote was“ol korekt”.After a while,he shortened that term to“OK”.The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born,Kinderhook,New York.Van Bnren’s friends organized a club to help him become President They caned the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called“OK”.31.The authorA. believes both of the stories B.doesn’t believe a word of the storie sC.is not sure whether the stories are true D. is telling the stories just for fun32.According to the passage,President JacksonA.couldn’t draw up any documents at all B. didn’t like to read important papers by himselfC.often had his as sistants sign documents for him D .wasn’t good at reading, writing or spelling33.According to the first story, the term “OK” A. was approved of by President Jackson B.was the title of some Official documentsC.was first used by President Jackson D.was an old way to spell“all correct’’34 .According to the second story, the term‘‘OK”A.was the short way to say‘‘old Kinderhook Club” B.meant the place where President Van Buren was bornC.was the name of Van Buren’s club D.was used to call Van Buren’s supporters in the election35.According to the second story.the term“OK”was first used __A.by Van Buren B.in a presidential electionC.to organize the Old Kinderhook Club D.by the members of the‘‘Old Kinderhook Club”Passage 2Although the United States covers so much land and the land produces far more food than the present population needs, its people are by now almost entirely an urban society Less than a tenth of the people are engaged in agriculture and forestry(林业),and most of the rest live in or around towns, small and large. Here the traditional picture is changing:every small town may still be very like other small towns, and the typical small town may represent a widely accepted view of the country, but most Americans do not live in small towns anymore.Half the population now lives in some thirty metropolitan areas(1arge cities with their suburbs、of more than a million people each—a larger proportion than in Germany or England, let alone France. The statistics(统计)of urban and rural population should be treated with caution because so many people who live in areas classified as rural travel by car to work in a nearby town each day.As the rush to live out of town continues.rural areas within reach of towns are gradually filled with houses,so that it is hard to say at what moment a piece of country becomes a suburb But more and more the typical American lives in a metropolitan rather than a small town environment.36.If now America has 250 million people.how many of them are engaged in agriculture and forestry?A.About 25 million.B.More than 25 million.C.Less than 25 million. D. Less than 225 million37.Which of the following four countries has the smallest proportion of people living in metropolitan areas?A.United States.B.Germany.C.France.D.England.38.What’s the meaning of the word“metropolitan”in the middle of the passage?A .Of a large city with its suburbs.B.Of small and large towns.C.Of urban areas.D.Of rural areas.39.According to the passage, what can we learn about small towns in the United States?A Most small towns become gradually crowded B.Small towns are still similar to each other.C.As the traditional picture is changing, towns are different. D .Small towns are turning into large cities40.Why is it hard to say when a piece of country becomes a suburb?A.Because they are the same.B.Because the rush takes place too quicklyC.Because the process is gradual.D.Because more and more Americans live in metropolitan areas.Passage 3If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago,we should probably have to say that we could not remember But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day,we should be able to give an answer to the question. It is the same in history Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war.Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to Write. For example,we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa.because they had not learned to write.Sometimes.of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories havebeen made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations For most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past.T his we may call ’remembered history’.Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is,because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.41. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage?A.“Remembered history”,compared with written history,is less reliableB.Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history.C.A written account of our daily activities helps US to be able to answer many questions.D.Where there are no written records.there is no history.42.We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because ___A.there was nothing worth being written down at that timeB .the people there ignored the importance of keeping a recordC.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fireD.the people there did not know how to write43.“Remembered history”refers to ___.A.history based on a person’s imaginationB .stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouthC .songs and dances about the most important eventsD .both B and C44.“Remembered history”is regarded as valuable only when ____.A. it is written down B .no written account is availableC.it proves to be time D.people are interested in it45 .The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past than wedo now if the ancient people had _____A.kept a written record of every past event B. not burnt their written records in wars C.told exact stories of the most important happenings D.made more songs and dancesPassage4When Mrs.Joseph Groeger died recently in Vienna,Austria, people asked the obvious,“Why did she live to be 107?”Answers were provided by a survey conducted among 148 Viennese men and women who had reached the age of 100.Somewhat surprising was the fact that the majority had lived most of their lives in cities. In spite of the city’s image as an unhealthy place, city living often provides benefits that country living can lack. One factor seems to be important to the longevity(长寿)of those interviewed. This factor is exercise.in the cities it is often faster to walk short distances than to wait for a bus.Even taking public transportation often requires some walking.Smaller apartment houses have no elevators(电梯),and so people must climb stairs.City people can usuallywalk to local supermarkets Since parking spaces are hard to find, there is often no alternative to walking. On the other hand, those who live in the country and suburbs do not have to walk every day.In fact, the opposite is often true.To go to school, work,or almost anywhere else, they must ride in cars.31.The Vienna survey may help to explain _____A.the complaints of people in apartment houses B.the cause of Mrs Groeger’s death C.the longevity of people like Mrs.Groeger D. the image of cities in general 32.The purpose of the second paragraph is to list some _____A.benefits of walking B.occasions for walking in city lifeC. comments made by city people D.problems of city living33.To reach the third floor of a building.it would probably be most healthful __A. to take the elevator B.to walk up the stairs C.to ride in a car D.to find an alternative to walking34.People who live in the country probably do more driving than walking because __ A.they don’t live near business areas B. they don’t need the exerciseC.they never have parking problems D.they can’t afford to take the bus35.A conclusion that can be drawn from this passage is that _A.air pollution is not serious B.anyone can live to be 107 C.country people should move to the city D.walking is a healthful exercisePassage 5For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest dramatist(剧作家).Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him:that of William Shakespeare Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight,of the work of our greatest writer. All of US use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well—known proverbs and quotations.Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of US use about five thousand words in our normal use of English;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand. There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it.Such a study is well worth the effort(it is not,of course, recommended to beginners)even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.36. When there is a heavy rain.trees can help to prevent floods.as they can.A.keep rain from falling down to soft ground B,cause the soil to allow rainwater to sink inC.prevent the soil from being washed away D .make the topsoil stick togetherPassage 7Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young man are still in existence. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading English literature. At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact, his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete For unlike other young Virginian of that day,he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then,Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams,Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years,Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress(国会),or on any Subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders,he did not visit the country he admired SO much. Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams,he never reached Europe31.Why didn’t Washington go to college?A.His family could not afford it. AGrandparents Answer a CallAs a third generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never pleased move away. Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to help their children, she politely refused. Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms. Gaf finally say yes. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said:”Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today - and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week.”A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such astudent. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, ” But I’m just not creative.”“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”“Oh, sure.”“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”“Nobody. I do it.”“Really-at night, when you’re asleep?”“Sure.”“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”25. ACOn one of her trips to New York several years ago, Eudora Welty decided to take a couple of New York friends out to dinner. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.“Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.“They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,”Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.”Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi state reunion (团聚).“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. “And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’”Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.“I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.25. (1)For many years scientists have said that the earth is getting warmer. Now they have found something new-hot cities! In the southern US, they have found that cities become very hot in summer. For example, the city of Atlanta in Georgia has rooftop temperatures of up to 50 degrees while it is 27 degrees in the streets! At night, the outsides of the building stay so hot that the heat of the city causes storm over the city.China also has the same kind of problems. Trees make the temperatures lower, so we should have more trees in our parks and squares. Also we should paint our roofs white. If we do this, they do not become so hot. Every roof in a hot and sunny country should have solar roof panels. The electricity from these can be used to run the air conditioners in the building.People continue to cut down forests around the cities. This makes the problem worse. Lenin and his wife Krupskaya translated a long English book into Russian. But when they went to England in 1902, English people couldn’t understand a word they said and they couldn’t understand what was said to them. These days more and more foreigner s are coming to China and more Chinese are going out to foreign countries to work or study. So the spoken language is becoming more and more important.Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. Thy sounds of the Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same. If you don’t listen carefully, you’ll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.Well, what about writing? Like speaking, it’s to exchange ideas. People generally use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea clear in your head and then to write it in clear lively language.Chinese students read far too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly, by the time you have reached the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words, don’t look them up in the dictionary. Guess the meaning from the context. Y ou may not guess quite correctly the first time, but as new words come up again and again in different contexts, their meaning will become clearer and clearer. If you look up every word, you’ll never finish a book.Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they are studying. In many countries it is observed by sending cards to your friends and candy or flowers to your husband or wife if you’re married, or to your boy friend or girl friend if you’re not married. In Japan, some girls even give their fathers chocolates. Why is this holiday for people in love called V alentine’s Day?One explanation comes from a Christian man whose name was something like“V alentine”. He lived at a time when the Roman Emperor refused to allow any Roman soldiers to get married for any reason. Many couples came to V alentine to be married. So he would secretly marry them in a Christian ceremony. He was discovered and put in prison by the Emperor. One tradition says that he wrote notes to his friends by marking on leaves and then throwing them out of the window of his prison. The leaves were shaped like a heart. V alentine was killed on February 14th and V alentine’s Day recalls his tragic death. On V alentine’s Day, American elementary school children make or buy V alentine cards, write the name of a classmate on them, and take them to school and put them in a special V alentine’s Day box. And then on that day the box is opened, the cards are taken out and given out.1. Which of the following is true about V alentine’s Day?A. It is observed by sending flowers to one’s husband or wife.B. They learn languages, history, politics, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Y et, no one can learn everything from school.A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem. Great scientists befor e us didn’t get everything from school. Their teachers only showed them the way. Edison didn’t even finish primary school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They would ask many questions as they read. They did thousands of experiments. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. Above all, they knew how to use their brain.1. People go to school to _________.A. learn several subjectsB. make a livingC. get an educationD. learn from teachers2. According to the passage, the most important thing a teacher should do is _________.A. to teacher his students everything he knowsB. to know everythingC. to teach the students how to thinkD. to teach the students how to study by themselves3. They read a lot of books and asked many questions while reading.B. They did thousands of experiments.C. They always worked hard and never wasted time.D. All of the above.(9)The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied them. It often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I don’t want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at a n American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in china, but it is not in the West at all. In the US it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on him accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say “No, thanks”. When an American is fed with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks, I’ll ta ke some Diet. Pepsy–cola if you have it.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the US, you had better remember the famous saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.1. From the passage, we know that the Chinese are usually _______ to the guests.A. eager to give all they haveB. politeC. impoliteD. cold2. When a foreigner has dinner with a Chinese host, he often feels _________.A. pleasantB. uncomfortableC. satisfiedD. happy3. Why does a Chinese often refuse the offer of food or drink at a dinner party? Because _______.A. he has had enoughB. he is shyC. he is afraid that others will laugh at himD. he thinks it’s polite to do that4. When an American wants something to eat or drink at dinner, he will _________.A. go and take it himselfB. refuse the hosts offerC. ask for it directlyD. ask another to fetch it for him5. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Means ________.A. when you get to Rome, you should act as the Romans doB. when you stay in Rome, you should do as the Romans doC. when you are in a new country, you should do as the natives doD. Romans can be example for you(10)When we can see well, we don’t think about our eyes very often. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.People who are farsighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts(白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them. When night falls, colours become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the sides of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you can see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can’t see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.1. We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ___.A. we think about our eyesB. we cannot see clearlyC. we wear glassesD. we have to do much reading2. According to the passage, a _________ is more likely to be nearsighted than the average person.A. tailorB. doctorC. guardD. driver3. Those who suffer from cataracts _________.A. will become blindB. can’t be curedC. may be curedD. must move to other places4. People who are farsighted _________.A. cannot do a lot of close work without glassesB. can only see things that are very close to their eyesC. have difficulty reading a book if they hold it at arm’s lengthD. have the same problem as the nearsighted people5. To see a small thing at night, it is better to look _________.A. with wide open eyesB. with half-shut or narrow eyesC. straight at itD. in a slightly different direction(11)Hi, dear boys and girls! 阅读理解专项练习一:1When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back tograndma's generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress codewill be Sunday best. But in many other homes, this china-and-silver elegance has given way to a stoneware (粗陶) and stainless informality, with dresses assuming an equally casual-Friday look. For hosts andguests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, itspells economic hard times.Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-on-Trent, announced that it is eliminating1,000 jobs -- one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4, 000 the numberof positions lost in 18 months in the pottery (陶瓷) region. Wedgwood and other pottery factoriesmade cuts earlier.Although a strong pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company "has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend" toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat infront of television.Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone casual. In a time of long work hours and demanding family schedules, busy hosts insist, rightly, that it's better to share a takeout pizzaon paper plates in the family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a "real" dinner party.Too often, the perfect moment never comes. Iron a fine-patterned tablecloth? Forget it. Polish thesilver? Who has time?Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points of etiquette (礼节) that childrenmight once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents(" Chew with your mouth closed." "Keep your elbows off the table. ") must be picked up else-where. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be able professionallybut inexperienced socially.72. Why do people tend to follow the trend to casual dining?A. Family members need more time to relax.B. Busy schedules leave people no time for formality.C. People prefer to live a comfortable life.D. Young people won't follow the etiquette of the older generation.73. It can be learned from the passage that 'Royal Doulton is .A. a seller of stainless steel tablewareB. a dealer in stonewareC. a pottery chain storeD. a producer of fine China74. The main cause of the layoffs in the pottery industry is .A. the increased value of the poundB. the worsening economy in AsiaC. the change in people's way of lifeD. the fierce competition at home and abroad75. Formal table manners, though less popular than before in current Social life, .A. are still a must on certain occasionsB. are certain to return sooner or laterC. are still being taught by parents at homeD. can help improve personal relationships2When Johnny Cash sings, people listen. His big, deep voice rumbles out of radios and juke-boxes across North America. His records sell by the million. Country-music fans everywhere, knowhis big hits. They love songs like "Hey Porter", "Ring of Fire", and "Folsom Prison Blue".Johnny Cash sings about a hundred concerts a year. People like what they hear--and whatthey see, too. Rugged and big-shouldered, the singer stands six-two without his black boots on.He's a two-hundred-pound package of muscle and talent. And that scar(疤痕)on his cheek? It'sa bullet(子弹)hole, of course! In the minds of most people, Johnny Cash is "Mr Tough( violent) Guy". He's an ex-drugaddict (上瘾者)who was once put in prison. His grandmother was an Indian. To keep from starvinghe once had to live on wild rabbits killed from forty feet away with a knife. Some people say heeven killed a man.In fact, most of the Johnny Cash story is just that--a story. True, years ago he had a "drughabit "for a short time. He "popped" pills. But he never used heroin or other "hard "drugs. Some-times he'd go wild and get locked up for a few hours . But he never served a prison sentence. There's no Indian blood in his veins. He's been a killer only in song. As for the "bullet hole",it's an old scar left by a doctor who opened a cyst(囊肿).People who know Johnny Cash well say he's a "gentle guy", a "generous guy'--anything buta "tough guy". How did the stories get started? Some of them, like the story about the "Indiangrandmother", he made up long ago to add excitement to his career. Others , like the "bullethole" , simply got started. Now there's little the singer can do to change people's minds. "Theyjust want to believe it," he says.56. Johnny Cash is a favorite of many .A. opera loversB. country music fansC. hard-rock fansD. jazz music lovers57. In truth, Johnny Cash .A. invented the "Indian grandmother"B. used to kill rabbits for a livingC. had a bullet hole on his cheekD. served a long prison sentence58. The passage shows us that many people believe .A. only what they seeB. what they are sure is trueC. only what they hearD. what they find interesting3Do dogs understand us?Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had workedout the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!60. From paragraph 2 we know that __ .A. animals are as clever as human beingsB. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzeesC. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skillsD. dogs have similar 'learning abilities as 3-year-old children61. Both experiments show that .A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands rightB. Rico can recognize different things including toysC. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematicsD. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them62. Which of the following statements is true?A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities.B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training.C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects.D. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands.63. What does the writer want to tell us?A. To train your dog.B. To talk to your dog.C. To be friendly to your dog.D. Paynes Prairie is located near Gainesville. It is large, 21 000 acres. This protected land is called a preserve. The Florida Park Service manage the preserve. The Paynes Prairie basin was formed when limestone dissolved and the ground settled. It is covered by marsh(沼泽)and wet prairie vegetation. There are areas of open water. During brief periods it has flooded enough to be considered a lake. Except for that, the basin has changed little through time.Man has lived on Paynes Prairie a very long time. He lived there as far back as 10000 B. C. At one time, the Seminoles lived there. The prairie is thought to have been named after King Payne, a Seminole chief. During the late 1600s, the largest cattle ranch in Florida was on Paynes Prairie. Today, Paynes Prairie is preserved land . It is occupied by visitors and Florida Park Service employees.Willam Bartram visited Paynes Praire. Bartram was the first person who portrayed (described)nature through personal experience as well as scientific observation. He lived 200 years ago. He visited Paynes Prairie in 1774. At that time he described it. He called Paynes Prairie the "great Alachua Savannah."Most of the animal life, which Bartram described, is still here. A large number of sandhill cranes, hawks and waterfowl are here in winter. The animal diversity is increased by the presence of pine flatwoods, hammock, swamps and ponds. The Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is open year round. The Florida Park Service works hard so that the park will appear as it did in the past. It offers many opportunities for recreation. At the park you can camp and picnic. You can hike and bike. You can boat and fish. You can ride on horse trails. And you can see lots of nature and wildlife. You can see Florida as it was inthe early days.Paynes Prairie is a part of our Florida history. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares. Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, While others support it.Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories."Some memories can ruin people's lives . They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past."All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.68. The passage is mainly about .A. a new medical inventionB. a new research on the pillC. a way of erasing painful memoriesD. an argument about the research on the pill69. New chances are opening up all the time to explore the world. So we visit travel agents, compare packages and prices ,and pay our money. We know what our vacation costs us. But do we know what it might cost someone else? It's true that many poorer countries now depend on tourism for foreign income. Unfortunately, though, tourism often harms the local people more than it helps them.It might cost their homes and lands. In Myanmar, 5,200 people were forced to leave their homes among the pagodas(佛塔)in Bagan so that tourists could visit the pagodas.Tourism might also cost the local people their livelihood and dignity. Local workers often find only menial(卑微的)jobs in the tourist industry. And most of the profits do not help the local economy. Instead, profits return to the tour operators in wealthier countries, When the Maasai people in Tanzania were driven from their lands, some moved to city slums. Others now make a little money selling souvenirs or posing for photos.Problems like these were Observed more that 20 years ago. But now some non-government organizations, tour operators and local governments are working together to begin correcting them. Tourists, too, are putting on the pressure. The result is responsible tourism, or “ethical tourism.”Ethical tourism has people at its heart. New international agreements and codes of conduct can help protect the people's lands, homes, economies and cultures. The beginnings are small, though, and the problems are complex. But take heart. The good news is that everyone, including us, can play a part to help the local people in the places we visit. Tour operators and companies can help by making sure that local people work in good conditions and earn reasonable wages. They can make it a point to use only locally owned hotel, restaurants and guide services. They can share profits fairly to help the local economy. And they can involve the local people in planning and managing tourism. What can tourists do? First, we can ask tour companies to provide information about the conditions of local citizens. We can then make our choices and tell them why. And while we're abroad, we can:Buy local foods and products, not imported ones.Pay a fair price for goods and services and not bargain for the cheapest price.Avoid flaunting wealth.Ask before taking photographs of people. They are not just part of the landscape!Let's enjoy our vacation and make sure others do, too.72. What is probably the best title for the article?A. Tourism Causes Bad Effects.B. Tourism Calls for Good Behavior.C. Vacations Bring a Lot of Fun.D. Vacations Cost More Than You Think73. Which of the following is not mentioned?A. Local people were well paid to leave their lands.B. Tourists may stay in hotels opened by local people.C. Local people are mainly provided with low-paying work.D. Tourists could bargain with local people for a reasonable price.74. The underlined phrase "take heart" means" ".A. pay attentionB. take careC. cheer upD. calm down75. According to the passage, the writer thinks .A. tourism is not a promising industryB. dream vacations should be spent abroadC. the problems caused by tourism are easy to settleD. tourists should respect local customs and culture7Robert Owen was born in Wales in 1771. At the age of ten he went to work. His employer had a large private library so Owen was able to educate himself. He read a lot in his spare time and at nineteen he was given the job of superintendent(监工) at a Manchester cotton mill. He was so successful there that he persuaded his employer to buy the New Lanark mill in Scotland. When he arrived at New Lanark it was a dirty little town with a population of 2,000 people. Nobody paid any attention to the workers' houses or their children's education. The conditions in the factories were very bad. There was a lot of crime and the men spent most of their wages on alcoholic drinks.Owen improved the houses. He encouraged people to be clean and save money. He opened a shop and sold the workers cheap, well-made goods to help them. He limited the sale of alcoholic drinks. Above all, he fixed his mind on the children's education. In 1816 he opened the first free primary school in Britain.People came from all over the country to visit Owen's factory. They saw that the workers were healthier and more efficient than in other towns. Their children were better fed and better educated. Owen tried the same experiment in the United States. He bought some land there in 1825,but the community was too far away. He could not keep it under control and lost most of his money.Owen never stopped fighting for his idea. Above all he believed that people are not born good or bad. He was a practical man and his ideas were practical. "If you give people good working conditions," he thought, "they will work well and, the most important thing of all, if you give them the chance to learn, they will be better people."56. For Owen, his greatest achievement in New Lanark was _____________.A. improving worker's housesB. helping people to save moneyC. preventing men from getting drunkD. providing the children with a good education57. The Indians were invited to send boys to William and Mary College. In a letter the next day they refused the offer as follows: We know that you have a high opinion of the kind of learning taught in your colleges, and that the costs of living of our young men, while with you, would be very expensive to you. We are convinced that you mean to do us good by your proposal; and we thank you heartily. But you must know that different nations have different ways of looking at things, and you will therefore not be offended if our ideas of this kind of education happen not to be the same as yours. We have had some experience of it. Several of our young people were formerly brought up at the college of the northern provinces: they were taught all your sciences; but when they came back to us, they were bad manners, ignorant of every means of living in the woods – they were totally good for nothing. We are, however, not the less obliged by your kind offer, though we refuse to accept it; and, to show our grateful sense of it, if the gentlemen of Virginia will send us a dozen of their sons, we will take care of their education, teach them all we know, and make men of them.68. The passage is about ____.A. the talk between the Indians and the officialsB. the colleges of the northern provincesC. the educational values of the IndiansD. the problems of the Americans in the mid-eighteen century69. The Indian chief’s purpose of writing the letter seems to be to ____.A. politely refuse a friendly offerB. express their opinions on equal treatmentC. show their prideD. describe Indian customs70. According to the letter, the Indians believed that ____.A. it would be better for their boys to receive some schoolingB. they were being insulted by the offerC. they knew more about science than the officialsD. they had better way of educating young men71. Different from the officials’ view of education, the Indians thought ____.A. young women should also be educatedB. they had different goals of educationC. they taught different branches of scienceD. they should teach the sons of the officials first10Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s c heaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients(contents) on the back. Third, compare prices: that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these stores aren’t very a ttractive, and they usually do not have individual dressing rooms, not only are the prices low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.72. All the following statements are true about the phrase “ordinary items” in Paragraph 2 except ____.A. ordinary items never say “New and Improved” or “All Natural”B. ordinary products are usually cheaper than famous brandsC. producers spend less money on packaging of ordinary itemsD. the quality of ordinary items is usually as good as that of famous brands73. What does the writer think about ads?A. They are believable.B. They are attractive.。

Passage 1With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species. That's a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researcher has been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark.”Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine a nd a pioneer in embryo(胚胎) transfer work and related procedures, says he salut es the Chinese effort and “I wish them all the best success possible. It's a wo rthwhile project, certainly not an easy one, and it's very much like what we're attempting here at Texas A&M—to save animals from extinction.”Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos, semen(精子) and DNA of endang ered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should beco me extinct, Kraemer says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to r eintroduce the species in the future. It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles w i l l become extinct over the next 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years. This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells fr om a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are n ow trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.“The nuclear transfer of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda egg s could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will p robably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy. It take s a long time and it's difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth t he effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Missyplicity Project at Texas A&M, the first ever attempt at cloning a dog.“They are trying to do something that's never been done, and this is very sim ilar to our work in Noah's Ark. We're both trying to save animals that face exti nction. I certainly applaud their effort and there's a lot we can learn from wha t they are attempting to do. It'sa research that is very much needed.”61.
