4．小说到最后才说出项链是假的，这在作品中已有三处巧妙的暗示：一是借项链时，她的女友佛来思节夫人表现的相当大方，毫不迟疑地说“当然可以”；二是珠宝店老板说“我只卖出这个盒子”，这表明项链本不是什么贵重的首饰。由于作者技巧高超，天衣无缝，读者的心又深深地被主人公的命运所牵动，以至于难以觉察出来。小说到此戛然而止，使读者出乎意料，令人深思、回味，深化了主题。如果写马蒂尔德把真项链要回来，欢天喜地换回几万法郎的话，则使文章的“以喜衬悲”的效果消失，使文章的讽刺意味锐减。
