Lesson 1 A private conversation
I was in a park last week and saw two boys. One boy was sitting on
the grass. The other boy was standing near him.
The boy on the grass had a model aeroplane in his hand. The
standing boy was interested in the aeroplane and was looking at it.
Lesson 2 Are you a teacher?
Mr. Thompson is a teacher. He teaches English. He goes to a
different school every day.
He likes his work and he tries to make his lessons interesting.
He has a car. He waits outside his house every morning and then
begins his long journey.
Lesson 3 A pleasant dream
Last night, I had a pleasant dream. In my dream, I flew above this
city.
I saw houses and people. I flew across a river and saw some
children near it. They were sailing little boats in the water. I flew into the sky, but
soon I woke up.
Lesson 4 The wrong glass
We have two glasses on the tray. One glass is full of milk and the
other is full of wine.
I want to drink some milk. I picked up the glass of wine by mistake.
I drank the wine and put the glass back on the tray.
Lesson 5 The fire
It was midnight. Mr. Black was in bed, but he could not sleep. He
got up and looked out of the window.
He saw a man at the back of his house. The man had a box in his
hand.
He put the box on the ground and then he ran away. Mr. Black saw
some smoke.
Then he saw some flames. There was a fire in the box.
Lesson 6 Medicine and public health We live in exciting times. Scientists and doctors are always
discovering new ways of treating diseases.
They are finding new medicines every day. Many illnesses can now
be cured.
People are healthier and they live longer than they used to.
There are still many problems to solve, but we are finally winning
the war against illness.
Lesson 7 Shopping in London
There are many places of interest to see in London. If you want to
go shopping, you can find some of the best shops in Oxford Street.
Lesson 8 Not for jazz
There is a new hotel in London. The hotel is expensive and there
are a lot of visitors there.
I know someone who went to the hotel last month. He is a jazz
pianist.
He arrived at the hotel late at night and went straight to bed.
The next morning, the manager of the hotel asked him to leave.
Lesson 9 The best and the worst
We went to a small hotel on holiday last summer. It was in the
countryside.
We had a big room on the second floor. There was a small balcony
outside the room.
The countryside was really beautiful. The hotel garden was full of
flowers and trees.
Lesson 10 Mr. James Scott
Mr. James Scott is an engineer. He lives in the country. He has two
daughters.
They are fond of horses and dogs. Mr. Scott has two dogs and three
horses.
The girls are always very busy with the dogs and horses. These are
their pets.
